Ahead of the full implementation of Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) new financial regulations on states, local government joint accounts, the Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the Governor Yahaya Bello-led government of allegedly conniving with a commercial bank to circumvent the policy.

This was made known on Tuesday in a press statement issued by Prince Bode Ogunmola, the Publicity Secretary of the party.

PDP accused the state government of allegedly summoning and holding a meeting with eight directors of Local Governments, Head of Works department, and directing eight local government councils in the state to obtain a N3billion loan from the said bank.


It also alleged that the local government areas were directed to tie the N3billion loan to a project to be advertised immediately.

The party also warned against further further indebtedness of the state and councils.

The PDP accused the bank’s branch in Lokoja for been in the picture of the moves to grant the sudden loan, a plot which the party believes is aimed at circumventing the NFIU policy that is expected to take effect from Ist June, 2019.


According to the PDP, ” the policy implementation of NFIU which when fully in operation would have ensured direct payment to council allocation, may not achieve its desired objectives, as the deduction from the council allocation following the N3billion loan that is now quickly arranged.”

The opposition party further disclosed that the meeting concluded arrangement that the state government would provide contractors for the fictitious projects, an avenue the government still intends to allegedly siphon councils’ funds.

The PDP observed that ” this ongoing arrangement to further indebt Kogi Councils is presently unknown to NUP, NASU, NUT, NULGE, NMHWU officials, who ordinarily would have been great beneficiaries of the direct payment to local government account in terms of salaries and workers welfare.”

In a swift reaction, the Director General Media and Publicity to the Kogi State Governor Kingsley Fanwo debunked the allegation of the opposition party in the state.

According to him, “Governor cannot access funds through the Local Government Councils. It is not possible in this age where every transaction is open. You can speak to the Local Government Councils and know if they are doing such transactions.

“This Government doesn’t involve itself in financial misdemeanors. We work strictly on transparency and accountability. We didn’t wait for NFIU before granting autonomy to our councils. We won’t have time to respond to the PDP all the time as we are busy fixing the ruins of 13 years in the state.”

Former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan has hailed the efforts of the Bayelsa State Governor, the Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson in educational development saying he has surpassed expectations.

Dr. Jonathan who gave the commendation at the launch of the Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund in Yenagoa, noted that the governor’s decision to deploy the tool of education to the development and emancipation of the society was the right way to go. A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei quoted the former president as saying that the initiative and the landmark achievements of the governor would outlive his eight years as it’s been backed by law.
Dr. Jonathan who said the efforts of the present administration was in line with his educational policy to wrest the Bayelsa child from the claws of illiteracy when he was governor in 2006, noted that Education Development Trust would drastically change the story of Bayelsa as stare that was once listed among disadvantaged states, His words:” I appreciate what Governor Dickson is doing regarding education.
We all know that the only way you liberate and uplift a people is through education. From where I started as a child, if I didn’t go to school nobody would have known me outside my village, but today, l’m known all over the world because I was able to go to school. So supporting education is key. “Governor Dickson has done much higher than I projected in 2006, in terms of expansion of educational work. There was pandemonium in Jos North LGA of Plateau State, following a violent disturbance in some part of the metropolis caused by the murder of an unidentified civilian around Dutse Uku of the LGA Sunday afternoon.

According to a source, “This has always been the trend in the area; once anyone crosses over to the other side, his or her safety was never guaranteed.

“These are Christian and Muslim communities that share boundaries.

“However, gunshots began renting the air from all sides with people running helter-skelter, including those coming back from Church,” the source said.
The source, who preferred to be anonymous, also said “houses were set ablaze within the borders of the crisis area”.

Our correspondent further gathered that one Mr Chuwang Michael was also killed in the ensuing violence.

As at the time of filing this report, security operatives (soldiers, mobile policemen and others) have been drafted to the area and normalcy is beginning to be restored with people being advised to remain indoors.

Meanwhile, the police have confirmed that there were fresh disturbances in Dutse Uku area and environs.

According to the spokesman of the state police command, DSP Matthias Terna Tyopev, “We have mobilised our personnel to the area. As we speak, the Area Commander Jos Metro is on ground there.”

Also, the State Peace Building Agency, through its Director-General, Joseph Lemgmang, confirmed the deployment of troops to the troubled areas.

Abducted filmmaker, Salisu Muazu, and two others, have regained their freedom, two days after being abducted by unknown gunmen, along the Kaduna-Jos road on Thursday.

Alhaji Sani Muazu, a brother to the victim, confirmed their release to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Sunday.

He said all the three victims were freed after paying the N10m ransom as demanded by the kidnappers.

According to Sani, “We paid the ransom and we were misled on where we could reach our brothers and while searching, a truck driver, who saw them, led us to where we could find them.”

He described the situation and the experience of trying to secure their release as a gruelling one for both the captives and their relatives.

Recall that the two brothers and two others were returning from a conference in Kaduna when they were stopped by armed bandits on their way to Jos


While Sani narrowly escaped, his brother, Salisu, and two other friends were held captive by the bandits, who later demanded N10m ransom.

Sani and Salisu are both filmmakers and television experts who have been in Kannywood since the inception of the industry.

Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has taken a swipe at the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general election and Senator representing Imo West senatorial zone, Senator Hope Uzodinma, over his recent media onslaught on him.

Okorocha, in a statement on Sunday signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, described Uzodinma as a “shameless” politician, who aside being engaged to destroy APC in the state, can do worst things to curry favour if given the opportunity.

The statement said “within one week, Chief Hope Uzodinma, the governorship Candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), in Imo State, has had series of interviews in almost all the national newspapers. And his target in all the interviews was Governor Rochas Okorocha. He has also invaded the social media with his insults on the governor.


“Interestingly enough, the kind of courage and boldness Chief Uzodinma displayed or exercised in all his media outings against Governor Okorocha only showed that he has no shame. And he could do worst things if he has the opportunity.”

The statement read further, “Chief Uzodinma contested the governorship election in the State with the ticket of APC and he could not win in his own Oru East local government. He could not win in any of the 27 LGAs in the State, and never came second or third in all the LGAs but only came fourth and he has the audacity to be granting interviews and talking balderdash.

“He has only confirmed that he was only used as tool to destroy Imo APC. And they have promised him Ministerial appointment and that is the reason behind his current media Campaigns and to be listened to, he has to be insulting Governor Rochas Okorocha.

“Chief Uzodinma and co told the world that governor Okorocha had finished politically, that they were the ones holding the ace of APC in the State. And today, Nigerians have seen or known who holds the franchise of APC in Imo and in the Southeast.”

It continued that, “at least, the outcome of the 2019 election spoke volume. It showed that like Governor Okorocha had said, Chief Uzodinma didn’t contest the 2019 governorship election in the State to win. He only came to be a tool in the hands of those who wanted to kill APC in Imo and South-East in general for reasons best known to them.

“The 2019 poll also showed that Ugwumba Uche Nwosu is loved by Imo people to a very large extent and he was the most popular governorship Candidate. He won the 2019 election with the real votes of Imo people but INEC decided to announce someone with fictitious figures winner.

“Chief Uzodinma could not produce even one House of Assembly member. But Ugwumba Nwosu produced about eleven House of Assembly members, two Federal House of Representatives members and one Senator for Okigwe zone on the platform of Action Alliance, (AA). And all those who won election on the tickets of APC are all Governor Okorocha’s men.

“The truth is that falsehood does not endure. But truth endures. Even at the moment, only Governor Okorocha has the capacity to rebuild APC in Imo and in the South-East generally with the support of the AA Chieftains led by Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.

“In case men like Hope Uzodinma do not know, Governor Okorocha will outlive them, outlive their mischievous politics and their gang up. In their effort to destroy Okorocha’s politics, they messed up the entire State with their Collaborators.

“Chief Uzodinma should pursue his Ministerial appointment with decency and leave Governor Okorocha alone. Mischief does not pay at all.”

Sen. Ahmad Babba-Kaita, representing Katsina North senatorial district has said that the almajiri challenge is the next greatest danger Nigeria is facing after Boko Haram.

The senator said this in Abuja on Saturday at an event organised by an advocacy group known as Almajiri Child Right Initiative (ACRI), to mark the 2019 Almajiri Child Rights Day.

Babba-Kaita said that these neglected children constitute the scourge of the society, who could easily be recruited into banditry, kidnapping and other vices.

He observed that in a situation where the government is overwhelmed, individuals and nongovernmental organisations should rally around to see how this escalating problem can be handled.

He maintained that ACRI is one of the greatest advocacy groups on the rights of almajiri children and needed more support in tackling the menace including the number of out-of-school children.

The lawmaker added he would work with other interested lawmakers to ensure that the bill on the regulation of the almajiri system go for third reading at the National Assembly.

Also, Mr. Ahmed Buhari, a presidential aspirant under the platform of Sustainable National Party (SNP) in the concluded general elections, said parents must be made to take full responsibilities of their children.

He observed that the almajiri children lacked parental care, love and good upbringing.

“It is therefore imperative that we sit down in a round table and find the best possible ways to address this problem which may eventually consume us,’’ Buhari added.

He emphasized the need for the country to have a proper data management system in order to know how best to handle the inadequacies confronting the nation.

Mr Mohammed Keana, founder and team leader of ACRI in his address, emphasized that Nigeria and the world cannot achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, without resolving the almajiri child right crisis.

He said ACRI is joined by other child right advocates in Nigeria and across the world, to mark the second annual Almajiri Child Rights Day.

“This is to draw attention to one of the world’s most abused set of children,” Keana said.

He further said that ACRI is calling on the government to immediately set up a multi-stakeholder task team and come up with a unified position on how to address this challenge.

“Government must address the social, educational, nutritional and security situation of the almajiri child.

“We need a medium-term enlightenment plan for building consensus with actors and benefactors,’’ he said.

Keana also called on the legislature to pick up where their predecessors left and pursue an all encompassing solution to child destitution in Nigeria.

Prominent Former Nigerian Internationals have praised Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for promoting sports for the empowerment of youths in the state.

In an interview with journalists at the Government House Port Harcourt on Friday night, they called on Governor Wike to sustain the investment in sports.

Former Nigerian Winger, Finidi George said that he was impressed by the results attained by Governor Wike in the area of sports.

Finidi George said: "His first four years have been great in many aspects. He is always promoting sports. We can see what he has done at the Madrid academy and we are looking forward to him doing more in his next tenure. We are happy to be here and to pray for him to really do more in sports and we will always be back here to support him in whatever thing he will need from us as ex football players.

" He has done a good big job. We look forward to seeing more.I really love it,the stadium was filled up. We had a good game and we enjoyed it "

Former Super Eagles Captain, Kanu Nwankwo expressed happiness that Governor Wike has kept his promise in the area of sports development.

He said: "For us , we are pleased . That is why we came all the way to honor him,knowing that he is doing great,knowing that he is going to do even better. We pray for him and we are supporting him.

" If we can have more of him in Nigeria, grassroots football will develop. What he is doing at the academy is one of the keys that will help the youths".

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has agreed to abide by the Supreme Court’s Judgement on Zamfara State Elections
Recall that the Apex court had ruled that the All Progressives Congress, APC, did not conduct valid primaries in the state. The court therefore ordered that all votes by APC in the election were all wasted
INEC, following the judgment by the court, said it met and took advise from its lawyers based on the judgement and determined that in the Governorship, the PDP won both the Governorship and Deputy Governorship positions. The Commission also said that the PDP equally won Zamfara INEC Section 179 and subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution
