Properties / Re: Why Don't Builders Use Steel In Nigeria? by OilGasNg: 7:48pm On Dec 21, 2020
As a civil engineer who has been involved in the design of steel structures mainly for industrial structures and oil and gas structures, I can tell you some of the challenges:

1. Lack of technical know-how: most of our higher institutions do not teach steel design and construction in detail to civil engineering students, as most of the lecturers themselves are concrete-biased. So they do shy away from teaching students, due to limited knowledge. Only few consulting firms in Nigeria also have the capability.
2. Difficulty in construction: unlike concrete that you can make mistake during construction, break or chisel and re-do, steel construction is very technical and has to be precise. The tolerance for error is only few mm in most cases. Also, you need specific equipment in all phases of steel fabrication and installation, whereas you only need basic tools like shovel, headlamp, buckets for small concrete buildings. Hence, there are very few construction companies that can fabricate and install steel structures.
3. Cost: As rightly mentioned by some earlier commenters, steel construction is generally more expensive than concrete in Nigeria, because of 100 % importation of steel materials, and more expensive equipment for fabrication and erection. It is only economical for large industrial structures (warehouse, workshops, etc) and high rise buildings. Hence it is only large manufacturing companies and oil and gas industry that often tend to build steel structures.

However, steel structures is preferable in the following cases:

1. Where you need long spans: steel can easily go several tens of metres before column support. The depth and weight of concrete beam and colums that would be required in this case will be unrealistic, hence the preference for steel in industrial structures, e.g factories and warehouse.

2. Fast construction schedule: Steel members can be fabricated faster in the workshop, and just installed at site. You only need to get your foundation ready. Hence, steel structure can be installed much faster. You can easily buy and import a fully prefabricated steel structure from China nowadays, and just install with crane at your site in a matter of days or weeks.

3. Cheaper foundation cost: Due to higher strength than concrete, you can use far lighter steel members to carry same load as concrete. Hence in high-rise structures for instance, in addition to shorter construction schedule, you can make significant savings on the size of foundation required for steel structures compared to concrete structure.

At Aquila Consults Limited, our service include the design of steel structures, and we also offer training on the design of steel structures. You can check my signature for our website and get more details.

Thank you.

Webmasters / Re: Proposal To Improve My Website by OilGasNg: 10:06pm On Aug 28, 2018
@Cyberdemonic,

Actually I do not have problem with my Adsense account, which I have had for over 10 years now. It is actually active, but the returns it is generating is very low. It is Amazon Affliliate account for the website that was withdrawn, due to no sales after 6 months of placing link on the website.

A mobile optimized design does sound reasonable, but I still need the desktop site to also be overhauled.

Can you therefore send me a proposal on specifics of what you can do to the email address provided?

Regards.
Webmasters / Proposal To Improve My Website by OilGasNg: 11:01pm On Aug 16, 2018
Dear Webmasters,

I need someone to help review my website (check my signature for website details) which I have been running for 2 years now. It is a WordPress site hosted by GoDaddy. I have been trying to monetise with Google Adsense, but it could not even generate enough to pay for the domain name. I also tried Amazon Affiliate, but was disqualified after 6 months due to no sales. The hosting has just been automatically renewed for another 2 years. Hence I need the website to work for the money spent so far and generate profit. I have enough topics to post on the field, but lack of sufficient monetisation has not encouraged me to sit down and post frequently. However, i have received a lot of positive response from a many of the visitors (between 10 - 20 response per day, excluding spams).

The terms of reference for the website are as follows:

1. Improve the overall look and appeal of the website
2. Generate more traffic to the site through improved SEO
3. Propose adequate monetisation options

If interested, please propose how you would help me carry out the above, your reference WordPress-based websites which you have designed, along with your proposed fees within 1 week. You can send your proposal through my email on nairaland here or info(at)aquilaconsults(dot)com with your contact info, and I will get back to you. Please note that this job is one-off and I do not need anybody to maintain the site, as I want to retain control of when I post on the site.

Cheers,

Kunlef.
Properties / Re: Why Don't Nigerian Homes Have Basements? by OilGasNg: 11:53am On Sep 15, 2016
The only way you can have a basement with natural lighting and ventilation is if the land has a slope as mentioned in my previous comment, which may be natural or artificial. Otherwise, where will the window open to?

As for flooding, if the construction is well done and adequate drainage provided, it is not different from any other building.

Crime / Re: Man Arrested For Stealing Plantain In Akwa Ibom - PICS by OilGasNg: 1:47pm On Sep 10, 2016
AlexzStructure:
I'm ashamed to say I'm ashamed... But I think it's high time we start asking ourselves questions like, "why did he do that?, A man with five children. Why didn't he send one of his children?"... But everybody can't be me... Even Solomon said, if a man steals food to feed himself he must pay seven fold and not arrested [Prov. 6:30-31]... Why not let him go with what he stole, in fact, if you have more, give him, and CAUTION him not to steal again...
Please, we should learn to ask people why they did what they know was wrong... You'll find out most of them do that as a result of HUNGER/POVERTY AND NOT TO SHOW WICKEDNESS.... ThankS

I agree with the above post. While poverty is no justification for stealing, what the man needs now is help, not incarceration. For a man to attempt to steal just a bunch of banana that late in the night, it is obvious that he is driven by hunger, and does not have money to bail himself and may end up in jail. For the sake of his wife and children, well-meaning people around his location should help get the man out and of the police cell and not only give him back the stolen banana, but more. You can also help him find a manual work (e.g weeding, cleaning, car washing etc) to help him get some money legitimately and resist the temptation to steal in future.

Just like many others have stated above, if you build a basement on a flat land, the heat will be much, and with the epileptic power supply and cost of fuel in Nigeria, it may not be sustainable. Also, you will need to build reinforced concrete retaining walls on all four sides, which is very expensive.

However, from my past experience as a Civil/Structural Engineer, when you have land with deep slope, basement will be a very good idea. I once designed a commercial four-storey building with two of the floors below ground level (when viewed from the road). The implication of this is that you will need retaining walls on only two sides, and the plot is in a very developed part of Mokola in Ibadan, along the University of Ibadan - Mokola Road. The particular area is hilly on one side of the road and valley on the other side. Hence the valley side is where the building is located. Attempting to fill up the land before construction will also be exhorbitant, hence the Architect came up with the idea.

Cheers.

Thanks.
Properties / Semi Or Fully Detached Duplex Wanted For Rent In Lekki-ajah Axis by OilGasNg: 10:34pm On Aug 27, 2016
A semi or fully detached 3BR or 4BR duplex wanted between Lekki Phase 1 and VGC roundabout to be used for commercial purpose. However, the building will not be tampered with or modified as the business can be easily done in a normal residential building.

Requirements:

1. Must be on a tarred road and easily accessible.
2. Must have own spacious compound
2. Must be relatively close to the main Lekki-Epe expressway (except if it within Lekki Phase 1)
3. Sitting room must very spacious. Double sitting room is added advantage.
4. Separate BQ within the compound is highly preferable.
5. A 4 or 5-Bedroom bungalow with BQ in own compound may be considered if it meets the above criteria.
6. May also consider a Duplex between Ajah and Lagos Business School if it is very close to the expressway and on a tarred/interlocked road.

Willing to pay a maximum rent of 2m if it is worth it. Will be willing to pay 3-yr lease if affordable. But agency will be based on 1-yr rent.

Please drop your offer here including price, and I will call you if it meets my requirements.

N.B: if you are a house owner or landlord with such a property that needs minor renovation to put in shape, we can discuss directly.
