http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=107379 Frustration, anger and hopelessness are familiar rhymes in the world of Nigerian jobless graduates. Millions of jobless youths struggle for space in the nation’s labour market, fighting for non-existent or limited job opportunities. Day by day, anxious job seekers bury their forlorn faces in the pages of newspaper, in their search for vacancies, while others visit, on hourly basis, various job websites for the same purpose. Their endless search for job had forced many to lay aside their certificate to humbly pick crumbs from the roadside. Frustrated by the sad fate of Nigerian graduates, Udeme Johnson (not real names), confessed that his degree certificate has brought him more distress than fulfillment. According to him, he had suffered untold hardships and humiliation since he graduated from the university five years ago. His age-long dream of becoming an accountant while in secondary school, and climbing the ladder of success with ease seemed to have crashed hopelessly. Today, he works as a casual staff, carrying cement and stone for a building and construction company. May you never see your mates and hide, says Yoruba proverb. Ask Udeme and he would tell you that he would not be proud to face his colleagues, with an iron pan on his head. By bending his back to labour all day he cannot raise his head with pride. He admitted that he had eaten the bread of sorrow, working his hands to the bone for a pittance, under the supervision of inconsiderate foreign taskmasters. He told Campus Sun that his younger ones at home looked up to him for financial support shortly after his graduation but there was nothing he could do. Although he bagged a Bachelor of Science degree Second Class Upper Division (B.Sc.), and successfully passed out from the compulsory National Youth Service Corps programme, his joy suddenly turned to sorrow after applying for jobs, several times, without success. In some of the firms that he applied to, he was required to scale difficult hurdles, while others demanded for five years experience and above, a condition he couldn’t meet as a young graduate. Udeme said he was shocked when some of the organisations demanded that applicants must possess Masters degree before they would be considered for employment. After hunting for job for more than two years without any luck, age stole the shine on his face. As the first child in a family of eight, the anguished faces of his parents whenever he asked them for money further reminded him that he was old enough to shoulder some family responsibilities. “Where do I get the money for the Masters programme?,” he asked rhetorically. “My parents sacrificed a lot to train me in my first degree. They expect me to support them in training others. I needed to work but there was no hope for me.” Life became so tough that Udeme opted to work as a cement mixer for a building and construction company, where he earns a beggar’s wage at the end of the month. From dawn to dusk, he lives with the burden of doing a job that undervalues his degree certificate. Like Udeme, Johnson Adebayo, 36, graduated from the university five years ago as a civil engineer but could not get a job. He sought employment in many construction firms but without success. His saving grace came with his decision to start a small-scale construction company, where he was lucky enough to get small contracts. The above experiences are snippet of the predicament of most Nigerian graduates, who had to face the grim reality of joblessness. They struggle for space in the labour market overflowing with millions of new entrants each year from different tertiary institutions across the country. These tertiary institutions churn out an estimated 1.8 million graduates across the country. The situation has become so critical that cities like Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, Port Harcourt and Aba, graduates become keke (tricycle) and motorcycle riders to earn their daily bread. Efforts by the federal government, through the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), to address unemployment in the country through the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) and the Youth Enterprise With Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin) initiative seemed like scooping an ocean with spoon. The programmes were aimed at empowering and re-positioning youths to become self -employed and job creators but the limited carrying capacity of each of the programmes had left millions of desperate job seekers grinding their teeth in penury. Speaking to Campus Sun, an unemployed graduate, Inyali Peter, frowned at the increasing rate of unemployment in the country. According to him, life has not been easy since he left school without getting something to do to set food on his table. Inyali, who graduated from the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) with a B.Sc in Mass Communications, said: “I wished I was still in school because then I get some money from different sources but now as I speak to you all doors are closed. While in school, I heard of the increasing unemployment in the country but I was optimistic that shortly after my service I would find a good job in my area of service but the reverse is the case. “I am a regular visitor to . I have applied for so many jobs but none of those firms had ever called me for interview, I have also tried the YouWin but luck have not come my way. I only hear testimonies of those who have benefited from the scheme. I am calling on government to do something urgently because we, the unemployed graduates, are really suffering in this country.” Another unemployed graduate, Felix Ukam, maintained that youth unemployment fuels most crimes in the country. “Most of these crimes we hear or see are perpetrated by unemployed graduates because they don’t have anything doing. So, that is why they resort to committing crimes to survive. I graduated eight years ago but haven’t earned salary from any job and when I sit in my quiet place so many negative thoughts runs deep in my mind.” Asked why he is not self-employed, he responded: “Will I use my fingers to start doing business? I can create a good job for myself but I do not have the start-off capital. I have tried to access loan or grant but I have not succeeded in any way. With N100,000, I can start my own business.” Another jobless graduate, who pleaded that her name should not be mentioned, told Campus Sun that the “YouWin” programme was more of a lottery game, where only lucky winners were empowered. She said President Goodluck Jonathan acknowledges the fact that unemployment had become one of the biggest challenges in the country, and urged the government to address it with innovative ideas that would empower jobless youths. |
am from esan west. i reside in abuja. searching for an esan, edo born lady date for marriage. attractive ofcourse |
I think it is high time the government started regulating the church pastoral activities in every neighborhood. The rate at which some dubious and jobless Nigerians will just wake up in one morning and declare to the people that they have been called by God for pastoral mission, in automatic conjunction with their spouses, is too rampant and disgraceful. Churches are flooding every street of Nigeria without control and regulation. All series of banners with different church names flood everywhere in the country with the primary motives of defrauding gullible Nigerian miracle-seekers. So, it is also high time government started thorough investigation into the flamboyant lives which some pastors of today live in Nigeria. the same is practised in the united state of america. this would really help the BLIND set to seee, since they cant read the bible for themself and pick understanding. let the Fed Govt help this of guilible Nigerians. EVERY NIGERIAN MATTERS Have a Prosperous 2013 |
i have an idea. someone here could start a website where inventors or innovator upload their work with detailed description on how they intend to start to the finish. the inventor would now put up a figure of amount he or she would need to finish the work which must be marketable enough for him or her to get donors. then interested donor would donate to the amount required to complete the work, of which everyone who donates would get a discount to buy the product on final production. also there would also be a monitoring on the steady progress on the work of the inventor. I think this would widely encourage innovation and technology advancement for consumer use in Nigeria. Also this way brains do not have to fly out of this our beloved country. Please someone here should take up this WEBSITE design detailing i just describe here. i have more ideas on how it should be designed, here is my email for further questions for anyone who wish to take it up |

As far as many pastors are concerned, the most important scripture of all is not to be found in the word of Jesus. Neither is it even in the New Testament. That scripture says: “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and try me now in this,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.’” (Malachi 3:10). This scripture is drummed repeatedly into Christians on Sundays. However, the only time Jesus mentioned tithing in scripture, he pointed out that it was not a weighty matter of the law. (Matthew 23:23). Hebrews says people only receive tithes “according to the law.” (Hebrews 7:5). It then insists tithing (and everything else under the law) has been annulled: “The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless.” (Hebrews 7:18-19). Nevertheless, mercenary pastors continue to insist on the payment of tithes. Latter-day Pharisees Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for keeping part instead of the whole law. (Matthew 23:23). That is what tithe-collecting pastors do today. If we insist our congregants must pay tithes, we must also insist that they keep the rest of the law. James says: “Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” (James 2:10). Therefore, if we insist on tithing, we should also refrain from eating pork. We should stone adulterers, execute homosexuals, kill Sabbath violators and restore blood-sacrifices. Tithe-collecting pastors counter this by maintaining the payment of tithes pre-dated the law. Here Abraham is cited as the cardinal example of someone who paid tithes before the promulgation of the Law of Moses, as did Jacob, his grandson. However, such arguments are disingenuous. Before the law, tithing was at best an example but not a commandment. Moreover, pastors fail to mention that Abraham only tithed once in his lifetime. When he did, he did not even tithe his own money: he tithed the spoils of war. He gave ten percent of the plunder he took when he rescued Lot to Melchisedec, king of Salem. But then he did not even keep the rest but returned it (all ninety percent) to the king of Sodom. For his part, Jacob also tithed only once. He did this in a “let’s make a deal” arrangement he offered to God: “Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will surely give a tenth to you.’” (Genesis 28:20-22). This kind of deal about accepting God only under certain self-serving conditions should certainly not be a term of reference for any serious believer. Lies upon lies The first lie pastors tell Christians is what some have referred to as “the eleventh commandment:” “Thou shalt pay thy tithes to thy local church.” But the bible says no such thing. The storehouse of Malachi was not a church. It was a place where food was kept. Pastors hide from church-members the fact that money was not acceptable as tithe. The tithe was a tenth of the seed and fruit of the land and of the animals which ate of the land. (Leviticus 27:30-32). That is why God says: “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be FOOD in my house.” (Malachi 3:10). He does not say “that there may be MONEY in my house.” The food was used to feed the Levites, the poor, widows, orphans and strangers. Pastors also conveniently fail to teach the biblical tithe. The principles of tithing were not laid down by Malachi. They were laid down by Moses. The study of Moses’ guidelines quickly reveals that the biblical tithe has no application whatsoever to Christians and is mischievously violated by tithe-collecting pastors today. According to the Law of Moses, the tithe was divided into three allocations. The first year, it was given to the Levite. The second year, it was given to widows, orphans and the poor. The third year, it was eaten in the company of the faithful before the Lord as thanksgiving for his faithfulness. (Deuteronomy 14:22-28). In the seventh year, there was no planting and no reaping and therefore no tithing. So the next time your pastor asks you to pay tithe, ask him about the seventh-year reprieve. Also ask him if you can give your tithe to the orphanage, or bring it as food items to be eaten in church. Believe me; he will not agree with you because it is your money he is after. Inapplicability of tithes Tithing was only applicable to Jews and to the land of Israel. When large populations of Jews lived in Babylon, Ammon, Moab, Egypt, and Syria, these lands became tithe-able lands. However, tithes were not acceptable from strictly Gentile lands. So you need to ask your pastor how come he is collecting tithes in Nigeria. Servants or slaves who worked on the land did not tithe because the land did not belong to them. Since only agricultural and animal resources were included, a fisherman gave no tithe of his fisheries. Neither did a miner or a carpenter pay tithes, nor anyone from the various professional occupations. So if you are not a farmer or a keeper of livestock, tell your 419 pastor tithing is biblically inapplicable to you. Moreover, the only people authorised to receive tithes were the Levites. (Hebrews 7:5). So if your Pastor is a “tithe-collector,” ask him if he happens to be a Jew. Remind him that, even though a Jew, Jesus could not receive the tithe because he was not from the tribe of Levi but from that of Judah. The trick, of course, is for pastors today to claim we are “Levites.” If your pastor is one such dissembler, ask him if he lives as a Levite. Remind him that Levites had no land and did not have private property. Ask him also how he knows he is from the tribe of Levi, which happens to be one of the lost tribes of Israel. Point out to him that even Jewish rabbis don’t claim to be Levites today because all Jewish genealogical records were lost with the destruction of the Temple in AD 70, ensuring that it is no longer possible to ascertain the true identity of Levites. Therefore, if Jews no longer tithe because the Levites are a lost tribe, how can Christian pastors collect tithes when we are not even Jewish, how much more Levites? If Jewish rabbis, whose terms of reference remain the Old Testament no longer collect tithes, then pastors who insist Christians are under a New Testament have no business doing so. The conclusion then is inescapable. Every pastor who collects tithes is nothing but “a thief and a robber.” (John 10:1). By Femi Aribisala |
