Christianity EtcRe: To Tithe Or Not To Tithe - Jesus Spoke About Tithing In The New Testament by ojesoj(m): 10:51am On Sep 09, 2013
As far as many pastors are concerned, the
most important scripture of all is not to be found in the word of Jesus.
Neither is it even in the New Testament.

That scripture says: “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may
be food in my house, and try me now in this,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘If I
will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing
that there will not be room enough to receive it.’” (Malachi 3:10).

This scripture is drummed repeatedly into Christians on Sundays. However, the
only time Jesus mentioned tithing in scripture, he pointed out that it was not
a weighty matter of the law. (Matthew 23:23). Hebrews says people only receive
tithes “according to the law.” (Hebrews 7:5). It then insists tithing (and
everything else under the law) has been annulled: “The former regulation is set
aside because it was weak and useless.” (Hebrews 7:18-19). Nevertheless,
mercenary pastors continue to insist on the payment of tithes.

Latter-day Pharisees

Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for keeping part instead of the whole law. (Matthew
23:23). That is what tithe-collecting pastors do today. If we insist our
congregants must pay tithes, we must also insist that they keep the rest of the
law. James says: “Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one
point, he is guilty of all.” (James 2:10). Therefore, if we insist on tithing,
we should also refrain from eating pork. We should stone adulterers, execute
homosexuals, kill Sabbath violators and restore blood-sacrifices.

Tithe-collecting pastors counter this by maintaining the payment of tithes
pre-dated the law. Here Abraham is cited as the cardinal example of someone who
paid tithes before the promulgation of the Law of Moses, as did Jacob, his
grandson. However, such arguments are disingenuous.

Before the law, tithing was at best an example but not a commandment. Moreover,
pastors fail to mention that Abraham only tithed once in his lifetime. When he
did, he did not even tithe his own money: he tithed the spoils of war. He gave
ten percent of the plunder he took when he rescued Lot to Melchisedec, king of
Salem. But then he did not even keep the rest but returned it (all ninety
percent) to the king of Sodom.

For his part, Jacob also tithed only once. He did this in a “let’s make a deal”
arrangement he offered to God: “Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with
me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and
clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the
LORD shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be
God’s house, and of all that you give me I will surely give a tenth to you.’”
(Genesis 28:20-22). This kind of deal about accepting God only under certain
self-serving conditions should certainly not be a term of reference for any
serious believer.

Lies upon lies

The first lie pastors tell Christians is what some have referred to as “the
eleventh commandment:” “Thou shalt pay thy tithes to thy local church.” But the
bible says no such thing. The storehouse of Malachi was not a church. It was a
place where food was kept.

Pastors hide from church-members the fact that money was not acceptable as
tithe. The tithe was a tenth of the seed and fruit of the land and of the
animals which ate of the land. (Leviticus 27:30-32). That is why God says:
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be FOOD in my house.”
(Malachi 3:10). He does not say “that there may be MONEY in my house.” The food
was used to feed the Levites, the poor, widows, orphans and strangers.

Pastors also conveniently fail to teach the biblical tithe. The principles of
tithing were not laid down by Malachi. They were laid down by Moses. The study
of Moses’ guidelines quickly reveals that the biblical tithe has no application
whatsoever to Christians and is mischievously violated by tithe-collecting
pastors today.

According to the Law of Moses, the tithe was divided into three allocations.
The first year, it was given to the Levite. The second year, it was given to
widows, orphans and the poor. The third year, it was eaten in the company of
the faithful before the Lord as thanksgiving for his faithfulness. (Deuteronomy
14:22-28). In the seventh year, there was no planting and no reaping and
therefore no tithing.

So the next time your pastor asks you to pay tithe, ask him about the
seventh-year reprieve. Also ask him if you can give your tithe to the
orphanage, or bring it as food items to be eaten in church. Believe me; he will
not agree with you because it is your money he is after.

Inapplicability of tithes

Tithing was only applicable to Jews and to the land of Israel. When large
populations of Jews lived in Babylon, Ammon, Moab, Egypt, and Syria, these
lands became tithe-able lands. However, tithes were not acceptable from
strictly Gentile lands. So you need to ask your pastor how come he is
collecting tithes in Nigeria.

Servants or slaves who worked on the land did not tithe because the land did
not belong to them. Since only agricultural and animal resources were included,
a fisherman gave no tithe of his fisheries. Neither did a miner or a carpenter
pay tithes, nor anyone from the various professional occupations. So if you are
not a farmer or a keeper of livestock, tell your 419 pastor tithing is biblically
inapplicable to you.

Moreover, the only people authorised to receive tithes were the Levites.
(Hebrews 7:5). So if your Pastor is a “tithe-collector,” ask him if he happens
to be a Jew. Remind him that, even though a Jew, Jesus could not receive the
tithe because he was not from the tribe of Levi but from that of Judah.

The trick, of course, is for pastors today to claim we are “Levites.” If your
pastor is one such dissembler, ask him if he lives as a Levite. Remind him that
Levites had no land and did not have private property. Ask him also how he
knows he is from the tribe of Levi, which happens to be one of the lost tribes
of Israel. Point out to him that even Jewish rabbis don’t claim to be Levites
today because all Jewish genealogical records were lost with the destruction of
the Temple in AD 70, ensuring that it is no longer possible to ascertain the
true identity of Levites.

Therefore, if Jews no longer tithe because the Levites are a lost tribe, how
can Christian pastors collect tithes when we are not even Jewish, how much more
Levites? If Jewish rabbis, whose terms of reference remain the Old Testament no
longer collect tithes, then pastors who insist Christians are under a New
Testament have no business doing so.

The conclusion then is inescapable. Every pastor who collects tithes is nothing
but “a thief and a robber.” (John 10:1).

CrimeHousemaid Jailed 28 Years For Stealing N35m Jewellery by ojesoj(op): 10:24pm On Jul 08, 2013
A housemaid, Mary John, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for stealing her mistress’ jewellery estimated at N35m.

The 30-year-old woman slumped moments after hearing the sentence, hitting her head against the carpeted surface of the court room.

The impact shook the walls of the court room, but she was quickly resuscitated and carried out by prison warders.

The convict had been arraigned since September 2012 on four counts of conspiracy, entry, breaking and stealing.

Her mistress, Mrs. Esohe Kadiri, a lawyer, said she stole wristwatches valued at N9m, bangles and bracelets worth N10m, diamond set worth N8m, rings worth N3m, chains and pendants worth N5m, and a camera priced at N100, 000, which all totalled N35, 100,000.

The theft was said to have occurred in July 2012 at her residence in Victoria Garden City, Ajah.

Kadiri, in her evidence before the court said John took advantage of her travel outside the country to perpetrate the theft.

She said she was alerted to the crime by her sister, and after challenging John on phone, she suddenly became incommunicado.

Together with three other witnesses- Kelvin Ikeagwe, Francis Ugbem and Inspector Patrick Onu- 34 exhibits were tendered to nail the accused.

John, however, in her oral testimony, told the court she was hypnotised by some men whom she met on the road.

She also claimed she was taken to an herbalist’s house where she was told that if she told anyone about her experience, she would die.

She said she took the men to her mistress’ residence, and they broke through the burglar proof door to steal the items.

The magistrate, Mrs. Aje Afunwa, in her ruling however observed that the defendant’s written statement was inconsistent with her oral evidence.

She said John had indeed confessed to the crime in her written evidence which the court would admit as true.

She said, “In her evidence, she confessed to breaking the door, climbing the house and stealing the jewellery.

“I choose to believe more the defendant’s written statement than her oral evidence which is an attempt to shift the blame to another person. I believe her oral statement is a figment of her imagination.

“More so, hypnotism or superstition is a phenomenon which is not admissible in law.”

She further referred to her demeanor which she said did not show any sign of “one whose eyes had just been cleared of hypnotism.”

Afunwa said John did not show any remorse or regret for her action and hence deserved full punishment for her action.

She said, “I strongly believe that the defendant stole the items by herself with the help of another person who is at large.

“In view of the rampancy of such a crime where house helps, clerks and servants engage in the stealing of the property of their employer, this honourable court will not be lenient with the accused to serve as a deterrent to others.

“I therefore find the defendant guilty on the four counts of conspiracy, breaking, felony and stealing. She is to serve a prison term of seven years on each count, with hard labour, and the terms are to run concurrently for a maximum of seven years.

“And probably while serving her jail term, she would have a change of heart and probably confess as to where the jewellery is.

God! how i wish Nigerians would show true spirit of Democracy that we have had for the past 13yrs with nothing tangible we as Nigerians can boost of. is anyone watching the protest going on in Egypt? 17million people on the street protesting what they see as bad LEADERSHIP in just one year of Democracy(Egyptian surely understand what DEMOCRACY is = the will of the people) while we NIGERIANS have been in this band LEADERSHIP for 13yrs. Gawd! With what the Egyptians are doing nows vying for "THE PEOPLES WILL" ahead of that of the Muslim Brotherhood or Morsi's and considering the fact that majority of Egyptians are muslim. oh Nigerians. they have risen above religion, ethicity or tribe because nobi watin them go chop but better life for them all. they would soon start enjoying what almighty Dubai and Kuwait are enjoying given their resource.

you all know why i said oh Nigerians. when would we protest bad leadership in Nigeria. the question we all should ask ourself like the Egyptians did. has this Governor or president truelly,i mean truelly, now I'm writing this because i have risen above religion, ethicity or tribe which i expect from all Nigerians better our, i mean every or even majority of Nigerian lifes. let us ask ourself this question given the resource both mineral, oil and gas and tourism we have in Nigeria.

Egyptian are dissatisfied considering the democracy they all fought for. Its time, and the time is now Nigerians should also be dissatisfied. I will not stop talking till every NIGERIAN rise above party affiliation mentality, religion, ethicity or tribe at the expense of better life for Nigerians. EVERY NIGERIAN MATTERS

Cairo - The Egyptian army has asked President Mohamed Morsi to resolve huge protests against his rule or face intervention within 48 hours, placing huge pressure on country's first democratically elected leader.

In a statement on Monday, the army called on all groups – opposition and pro-Morsi alike – to resolve the situation. "The armed forces repeat their call for the people's demands to be met and give everyone 48 hours as a last chance.

"The national security of the state is in severe danger", it said, adding that if there was no resolution the army, "will be obliged by its patriotic and historic responsibilities ... to announce a road map for the future and the steps for overseeing its implementation, with participation of all patriotic and sincere parties and movements."

It described the mass protests on Sunday that brought out millions of Egyptians demanding President Morsi's resignation as "glorious".

It said protesters expressed their opinion "in peaceful and civilised manner", and that "it is necessary that the people get a reply ... to their calls".

Hours later, the army insisted in a second statement that it was not carrying out a coup, and said that it would not be part of the government.

'Huge pressure'

Al Jazeera's chief political analyst Marwan Bishara said the statement undermined the authority of Morsi.

"For the army to give the president 48 hours warning, the army are saying who is the boss," he said. "Morsi is no longer the same president as this morning in the eyes of those on the streets."

He said the statement placed "huge pressure" on the president to resolve the protests, "otherwise we can expect army intervention".

"That could be taking over the streets or taking over the government. This message is to the president. This undercuts his authority."

Morsi was later photographed at the presidential palace in Cairo meeting the prime minister, Hisham Qandil, and defence minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Helicopters trail Egyptian flags over Tahrir Square, Cairo.
Hours after the army's statement, helicopters flew over Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cradle of the 2011 revolution, trailing Egyptian flags to cheers of the crowd below. A loudspeaker blared: "The army and the people are one hand".

Tamarod, the main opposition group that has organised the protests, said the army statement showed it was taking the people's side. It urged its supporters to stay on the streets and squares of Egypt until Morsi's rule was ended.

The presidency cancelled a news conference due to take place late on Monday, while there was no statement forthcoming from the Muslim Brotherhood.

The army statment came hours after five of Morsi's ministers resigned. They were the tourism minister, Hisham Zaazou; communication and IT minister Atef Helmi; the minister for legal and parliamentary affairs, Hatem Bagato; water minister Abdel Qawy Khalifa; and environment minister Khaled Abdel-Aal.

Tourism minister Zazou tried to resign last month after Morsi appointed Adel al-Khayat, a member of an Islamist party linked to a massacre of tourists in Luxor, as governor of the temple city. Khayat later quit.

Brotherhood HQ burned

Egypt's street have been filled with pro and anti-Morsi protests since Sunday. In the capital, Cairo, the official building of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood to which Morsi belongs, was set ablaze before people stormed and looted the building. The interior ministry said that eight people had been killed in the violence.

People were seen leaving with petrol bombs, helmets, flak jackets, furniture, televisions and documents.

Mohamed ElBeltagy, of the Brotherhood, told AlJazeera that he rejected a claim that his members opened fire from inside the headquarters at attackers.

Many anti-Morsi protesters spent the night in dozens of tents pitched at Cairo's central Tahrir Square and the palace, positions organisers say they will hold until Morsi resigns.

In fewer numbers, supporters of the Egyptian president came out on Sunday to show their support and defend the legitimacy of the president.

In total, 16 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi groups.

Tamarod - Arabic for rebellion - gave Morsi a deadline of Tuesday to quit, threatening a campaign of civil disobedience if he stays.

The number of people who joined in protests on Sunday was between 14m and 17m people, the interior ministry told Al Jazeera.
PoliticsPatience Jonathan’s Excesses Must Be Curbed by ojesoj(op): 10:54pm On Jul 01, 2013
EACH time the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, hits the road with her long motorcade, including bulletproof and bombproof limousines, or is having a whale of a time at an event, drivers and commuters who find themselves on her routes always have to live with the bitter experience of the encounter. As police empty the roads of traffic, forcing drivers to wait as her glamorous convoy drifts by, motorists are trapped in traffic for hours on end, while social and economic life of the affected community is brought to a halt abruptly.

The recent visit of Mrs. Jonathan to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, in which her security details forcibly grounded the movement of residents, is the latest of such excesses that Nigerians have been forced to endure for the past three years. This impunity must stop. According to newspaper reports, Mrs. Jonathan’s security arrangement paralysed activities in the Port Harcourt Government Reservation Area for the four days of her visit. Armoured personnel carriers were deployed at two points, while gun-wielding operatives manned the points leading to her private residence. Many people missed their appointments because they were prevented from moving in and out of their houses.

When she came to Lagos last year, on a “thank-you visit” to some women groups for electing her husband president, she enacted a similar repulsive scenario. During the visit, Lagos residents were subjected to an unprecedented road blockade, which gave rise to an unnerving five-hour traffic that grounded all human and economic activities. The First Lady was attending that event at Ocean View Restaurant on Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island.

Mrs. Jonathan’s misdemeanour, which still resonates more than a year after it happened, forced Governor Babatunde Fashola to lament, “Lagosians were needlessly inconvenienced…. It dawned on me the need for public officers generally to be more sensitive to the people we serve. It is particularly worrisome that this (she) is not an elected person. I think we all must check how security agencies use the movement of high officers, especially VIPs, to disrupt citizens and taxpayers, whose money is used to fuel all the vehicles and all the apparatus that we use to block the roads against them. It should not get to the level that we close the roads in the state because VIPs want to pass.” It cannot be said better.

But not long after the ridiculous show of power in Lagos, Mrs. Jonathan headed for Warri, Delta State, where she also caused hardship to residents through her security arrangements. Needless to say, these foul-ups compound gridlocks on our roads. On a few occasions, the First Lady has also broken protocol. During President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the United States in September 2012, she breached protocol by disembarking from the aircraft before the President, and shaking hands with officials waiting on the tarmac while her husband was still coming down from the plane. The First Lady is setting a bad example for wives of governors.

The position of the First Lady in the United States, from where the convention spread to other countries, is not an elected one, carries no official duties, and attracts no salary. But it glows with much glamour and the occupier is expected to handle the position with sublime grace. In the United Kingdom, the role of the Prime Ministerial Consort is not official and as such whoever occupies the office is not given a salary or official duties. Many of them prefer to remain very much in the background. Indeed, the late Denis Thatcher once summed up the role of the ideal prime ministerial spouse as “always present, never there.” This is the ideal.

But operating under the loosely-defined, unconstitutional office of the “First Lady,” Mrs. Jonathan has been bringing the highest office in the land into disrepute since her husband assumed full duties as President in May 2010, by her public conduct. Her behaviour – when there is no reason for it – is leaving many citizens who have had their rights trampled on bitter but helpless.

This is not the practice in civilised societies. The basic requirement of civilised democracy is that everyone plays by the rules and that the rules command public confidence. In October 2011, it was reported that a stunned 27-year-old Indian woman was so agitated that she enquired from David Cameron, who chose to travel in a tube train during rush hour, “Excuse me, are you the Prime Minister?” The Prime Minister was reportedly travelling on the London Underground for an appointment. The United States’ security services offer maximum protection to Michelle Obama while, at the same time, causing minimal inconvenience to other motorists and citizens. It is as outrageous as it is gravely uncivilised for official cortèges to take pleasure in inflicting pains on the people that such officials claim to be serving.

The itinerary of the First Lady can be smoothly planned without compromising her safety and the convenience of the citizens. Mrs. Jonathan must recognise that power is ephemeral and should learn from the past occupants of the office who history does not favourably remember because they did incalculable damage to the image of the First Family. Fashola, who, as a governor, does not use sirens in his limited convoy, and does not harass other road users, offers a useful lesson in public morality and decorum. Even with the aura surrounding the office of President of the United States, whenever Barack Obama is visiting any part of America, information is fully circulated to the locality well ahead of time, and locals are given alternative routes that cause minimum inconveniences to use.

It is President Jonathan’s duty to caution his wife to stop this regime of offensive illegality that has tainted the Presidency and presented Nigeria in a bad light.

Newspapers cant keep on talking for unemployed Graduates on the pages of their newspapers. it is the graduate who are affected before you know it you are 30years old still with no job or you are been paid N30,000 or N40,000 somewhere and that is frustrating as hell after paying school fees that is way more than that at the university. UNEMPLOYED NIGERIANS ITS TIME WE SPEAK UP TILL THIS COUNTRY STANDS TILL TO TAKE ACTIVE PLAN NOT JUST PAPER TALKS.

my suggestion. to save future of the unemployed youth who are willing and able to work but no work due to i-dont-care-attitude by successive GOVT of this country. Unemployed graduate should organise a one month protest in all the 36states of the country. Every graduate must come out to join this protest and it should be done together and simultaneously.

God bless Nigeria youth who would stand up and say enough is enough. the moto of the protest should be WE WANT JOBS NOW FOR ALL UNEMPLOYED GRADUATE and if they(GOVT) don't respond well we all shall return to the street with more protest. common Nigerians we are talking of our FUTURE here. this situation would not change except Nigerian unemployed show their anger at those at the corridor of power.

obviously no one is a fan of buhari......his views over time define who he is like the recent one i read on boko haram. this OP is bais no doubt. he should have put up Fashola and president Goodluck Jonathan. APC is too wise to put up Buhari.

Hit like for fashola. hence forth it is Fashola and GEJ
