Eight people, including three soldiers, were killed in jihadist attacks on an army base and village in northeast Nigeria ahead of Monday’s Eid al-Adha festival, military sources said.

Three troops and three civilians died on Saturday when fighters from the IS-aligned Islamic State West Africa Province group attacked a base in Gubio, a town 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the regional capital Maiduguri, two sources said Sunday.

Three soldiers were killed “defending the base from ISWAP terrorists who wanted to overrun it”, the first source said.

“Three civilians were hit and killed in crossfire,” said the source, an officer who asked not to be identified for fear of punishment.

Two soldiers and six civilians were injured, he said.



The jihadists attacked the base in eight pickup trucks fitted with machine guns, leading to a two-hour-long battle, said the second source, who gave the same toll.

The attack was repelled with the aid of a fighter jet which deployed two hours into the clashes, said the officer.

“The terrorists were pulverised and forced to withdraw. Eleven of them were killed and three of their vehicles were seized,” he said.

ISWAP ransacked the same base in May, killing three soldiers.

In a separate assault on Sunday, fighters from rival jihadist faction Boko Haram killed two residents and burnt homes in an attack on the village of Ngwom, 14 km (eight miles) from Maiduguri.

Gunmen in pickup trucks stormed the village in a pre-dawn attack, shooting dead two male residents before robbing women of jewelry and torching four houses, anti-Boko Haram militia leader Babakura Kolo said.

“A woman had one of her ears chopped off by the insurgents as punishment for resisting being robbed,” Kolo said.

The jihadists attempted to seize a nearby military base after the raid, but were rebuffed following a one-hour gunfight, Kolo and a military source said.

The decade-long insurgency in northeast Nigeria has killed over 27,000 people, displaced some two million and spilt over into neighbouring countries.

The jihadists are notorious for stepping up attacks during the Eid season, prompting heightened security across the region.

ISWAP split from the Boko Haram faction headed by long-time leader Abubakar Shekau in 2016.

Since mid-2018 ISWAP has ramped up attacks on the military, while Shekau’s group tends to hit softer civilian targets.

On Saturday, several soldiers were also wounded when their vehicle hit a mine planted by ISWAP near the border with Niger, the military sources said.

They had a musical band playing; cadets were marching in unison, left right, left right. Their trousers and shirts painstakingly ironed with standing edges looking as though they were razor blades that could cut through anything in their way; their shining well polished black shoe which reflected the sun, so overwhelmed me, tried to fight back tears @ this point seeing this gentlemen officers doing their families and country proud. I could have being one of them, but I have solace in the fact that there is always a next time, will keep shooting this shot till the bull's eyes is hit.
Special shout out to damibj, nice meeting you bro dude single handedly gave an officer a slot no be by gra gra connection pass connection.
Wish officers of course 24 (DSSC) a successful career.

I don't know the process taken, but I just think their are something they need to do during the process to reduce the work load especially for applicants with foreign certificate because most of forgery case befalls on them.

I don't think this is forgery, NA should av confirmed if their school were accredited during the process, but come to think how they got Nysc certificate..... I also believed most of these guys entered through slot.

Additional 3 guys from SSC camp are in guard room for certificate forgery. ....let's be very very careful of schools we attend. ...it was learnt that most of them if not all, attended schools outside the country which are not accredited.....They will be handed over to MP and likely face 1yr in prison....

Abeg no make me laugh if u like do 1000 push ups and 1m situps with u failing medicals u wont even get the chance to showcase ur talent. So bros I think ur connect is not that strong because if is strong enough he would have informed u about medicals. When d time comes make sure u do ur medicals well and do follow ups in ur medical cos most guys clears der medical through follow up during the last ssc recruitment. Cos some ppl have to re do der medicals for correction. Der is no way 1000 ppl can do medicals within a week without mistakes
