Health / AIDS Epidemic 'a Crisis Of Epic Proportions' by Ojietune: 4:34pm On Jul 24, 2018
AIDS epidemic 'a crisis of epic proportions', Leading researchers yesterday begged for billions in extra funding, pumped straight into prevention and treatment of HIV as more people get infected.

They warned to meet the UN goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, HIV infections must be limited to 500,000 per year globally by 2020.

Ahead of the biennial meeting, which begins today and finishes on Friday, AIDS experts spoke at a specially organised talk yesterday.

Mark Dybul, diplomat and former executive director of the Global Fund for Fight AIDS, warned the world could be steering for 'a crisis of epic proportions'.

Speaking at a special event organised ahead of the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam, he said: 'Bad things will happen if we don't have more money.'

The United Nations' HIV/AIDS body, UNAIDS, last week warned the fight in controlling Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome was at a 'precarious point'.

According to UNAIDS executive director Michel Sidibe, there was a funding gap of almost £4.6 billion ($6 billion).

International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam

Around 18,000 researchers, public health officials and policy planners are expected to attend the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam.

Ahead of the biennial meeting, which begins today and finishes on Friday, AIDS experts spoke at a specially organised talk yesterday.
An estimated 36.7 million adults and children worldwide have HIV.

Health / Louise Brown : The Wonderful Story Of IVF At 40 by Ojietune: 7:17am On Jul 24, 2018
The Wonderful story of IVF at 40, All you need to know as IVF clocks 40 on wednesday 25 July. How Louise Brown birth has changed the world. With the success of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) - and there's more to come.

IVF means In vitro fertilisation.

IVF has become the final solution for most fertility problems, moving from tubal disease to male factor, idiopathic subfertility, endometriosis, advanced maternal age , and anovulation not responding to ovulation.

IVF is an assisted reproduction technology.

History of IVF

A Transient biochemical pregnancy was reported by Australian Foxton School researchers in 1953.

In 1977, Steptoe and Edwards successfully carried out a pioneering conception which resulted in the birth of the world's first baby to be conceived by IVF, Louise Brown on 25 July 1978,

Ian Johnston and Alex Lopata were responsible for Australia's first baby conceived by IVF.

The first claim of IVF in Nigeria was in 17th of March, 1989 pioneered by Professors Osato Giwa Osagie and Oladapo Ashiru was conceived via in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer(IVF-ET).

First known IVF experiment in Nigeria was done by Dr. Ibrahim Wada, called Hannatu’s birth on February 11 1998.

At the time of Louise's birth. "It was viewed with absolute suspicion," says Professor Peter Braude, head of the Department of Women's Heath at King's College London. "If you talk to people today about human reproductive cloning, the feeling you get that it is playing God is just how it was in 1978 with IVF"
More than eight million IVF babies have been born since louise brown’s birth

IVF was far more demanding for patients than it is today said Daniel Raby who recalls. "We were in beds in ranks, six of us in each of the Portakabins. They'd come round and wake us up in the middle of the night and we'd all troop off and we had to wee in a bottle so they could monitor our hormones. It did help us all to bond with one another."(guardian)

Today, IVF is a far more streamlined process. Women are treated as day patients, and there are no three-hourly urine collections, no hours of crouching after egg collection. Freezing allows spare embryos to be stored for future use and the advent of intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where sperm are injected directly into the egg, has meant that male fertility problems can be treated too. Donor eggs, sperm and embryos can all be used to help couples with more complex fertility problems, and the multiple birth rate, which has been the biggest health risk from IVF, is coming down.

NEW ADVANCES IN IVF

It has been reported that IVF baby is to be screened using a procedure that can read every letter of the human genome had been born.

The cost of IVF could be cut what could mark the start of a "new era" in IVF.

IS been 40 years since Louise Brown's birth, IVF has become a global money-making business producing very healthy profits, and there are hundreds of centres offering treatment around the world.

Over 8 million IVF babies have been born around the world since Louise Brown's birth

it is estimated that about 11,000 test tube babies have been delivered in Nigeria since inception (1989) with an average turn over rate of about 1000 babies yearly and average success rates have risen to around 25%.

Health / How Plasmodium Move Ten Times Faster Through The Skin Than Immune Cells by Ojietune: 3:48pm On Jul 23, 2018
Malaria parasites of the genus Plasmodium move ten times faster through the skin than immune cells, whose job it is to capture such pathogens. Heidelberg scientists have now found a reason why the parasite is faster than its counterpart. They did this by studying actin, a protein that is important to the structure and movement of cells and that is built differently in parasites and mammals.

The findings of Ross Douglas and his colleagues at the Centre for Infectious Diseases (Department of Parasitology) at Heidelberg University Hospital, the Centre for Molecular Biology at the University of Heidelberg (ZMBH), and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) are not only changing our understanding of a key component of all living cells, but they also provide information that could help in the discovery of new drugs.

Like Lego blocks, which can be put together into long chains, actin is assembled into long rope-like structures called filaments. These filaments are important for the proper functioning of cells — such as muscle cells — and enable each of our movements. However, they also serve to enable immune system cells to move and capture invading pathogens.

Likewise, they are of great importance for the movement of the malaria parasite. “Strangely enough, malaria parasites are ten times nimbler than the fastest of our immune cells and literally outrun our immune defences. If we understand this important difference in movement, we can target and stop the parasite,” says Dr. Ross Douglas from the Heidelberg Centre for Infectious Diseases. A key issue in the paper published in the journal PLOS Biology is how the rate at which actin filaments are formed and broken down differs between parasites and mammals.

Health / First Drug In 60 Years To Treat Malaria Sealed And Approved by Ojietune: 9:17am On Jul 23, 2018
First drug in 60 years to treat malaria approved. Recurring malaria - caused by the parasite plasmodium vivax - is the most common type of malaria outside Sub-Saharan Africa and make 8.5 million people ill each year

Scientists have described tafenoquine as a "phenomenal achievement."

Children can be particularly at risk, getting several bouts of malaria from a single bite, missing lots of school and getting weaker each time they get the disease.

And infected people can act as unwitting reservoirs of the disease because when the parasite reawakens in their bodies a mosquito can carry that parasite on to someone else.

This can make it hard to eliminate around the world.

Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has given the seal of approval to tafenoquine, a drug that can flush the parasite out of its hiding place in the liver and stop people getting it again.

It can be taken alongside another medicine to treat the immediate infection.

There is already a medication that can be used to get rid of malaria hiding in the liver called primaquine.

But unlike the single dose of tafenoquine needed, primaquine often needs to be taken for 14 days.

Some experts are concerned that many people feel better after just a few days and stop taking the pills, allowing the parasite to awaken at a later date.

ALSO READ : Scientists discover new malaria vaccine

Prof Ric Price, of Oxford University, told the BBC: "The ability to get rid of the parasite in the liver with a single dose of tafenoquine is a phenomenal achievement and in my mind it represents one of the most significant advances in malaria treatment in the last 60 years."

Meanwhile Dr Hal Barron, president of research and development at GSK, the company that manufactures the drug, said: "The approval of Krintafel [the brand name for tafenonquine], the first new treatment for Plasmodium vivax malaria in over 60 years, is a significant milestone for people living with this type of relapsing malaria.

"Together with our partner, Medicines for Malaria Venture, we believe Krintafel will be an important medicine for patients with malaria and contribute to the ongoing effort to eradicate this disease."

Tafenonquine has been in existence since the 1970s but working with Medicines for Malaria, GSK has repurposed the drug so that it can be used to get rid of malaria parasites in the liver.

The next step will be for the drug to be assessed by regulators in countries where this form of malaria is a significant problem.

Health / How Cannabis Induces Hunger by Ojietune: 1:48pm On Jul 20, 2018
Current Research have proven significance of cannabis in improving chronic pain and the raving call for medical marijuna approval, now researchers have found how cannabis induces hunger
Scientist Washington State College have proven that cannabis could play with hormones, in addition brain receptors, to induce starvation in a way more difficult style than beforehand thought.
‘The policy [of marijuana legalization] has moved a lot faster than science,’ lead author Jon F Davis
‘One of the reasons that medical marijuana has been legalized is to meet needs like this. People move all the way across the US to get it, and for many the reason is that Marinol has not been effective for them. They’re using cannabis – however, we have no information about how it is affecting them or their disease.’
The Analysis
The rats in Dr Davis’ study, presented on Tuesday at a medical conference, were ‘hot-boxed’ in metabolic chambers pumped with 800 milligrams of cannabis in just five minutes. That’s equivalent to the amount of cannabis that a medical marijuana patient might consume in a day over the course of hours. Another set of rats were in a chamber with normal air.
Whenever the rats got hungry, they could tap open a compartment to access food – a movement which was recorded so the scientists could track their rate of feeding.
in article
They found those who were exposed to cannabis ate more frequently than their peers in control chambers.
Scanning their brains and checking their blood at regular intervals, the scientists could map out what was driving this urge.
The Result
To the researchers’ surprise, their study showed cannabis at first switches off – rather than switches on – the hypothalamus. It then triggers a powerful release of ghrelin from the stomach – something that had never been previously seen.
They found that this release coincides with the hypothalamus awakening, in a harmonious balance that sets the stage for ravenous hunger.
Dr Davis said he suspects that might be different depending on different strains.
‘We are not able to get samples that are like what people are using because of regulations and restrictions,’
‘My suspicion is that different forms of cannabis might stimulate appetite sooner and some may delay it further. They may effect your preference for certain foods, maybe make you crave something more salty, or some something more sweet.
‘Those are all things we want to look into.’
Dr Davis is now planning a follow-up to the study to hone in on how cannabis activates hunger in people with life-threatening diseases.
‘We have only studied this concept in healthy animals to understand the basic biology but our goal is to understand someone that’s sick that really needs the calories.
‘Giving them cannabis like this could stimulate appetite and help them regain lost body fat, but how? We really don’t know what the interactions are.
‘If we figure that out, that would give validity to medical marijuana and for doctors to prescribe it knowing what they’re prescribing.’

Health / Re: Healthy Diet Could Prevent Asthma by Ojietune: 12:19pm On Jul 16, 2018
Kweenuwa:
Healthy diet could prevent asthma. Healthy diet high in fruit, vegetable and whole grain cereal could prevent asthma. This diet contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which could lower symptoms of asthma.

In contrast consumption of meat, salt and sugar worsen symptoms of asthma.

The President of Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS), Prof. Etete Peters, has said that about 15 million of the country's population are suffering from asthma, adding that over 400 million people are asthmatic worldwide.

ALSO READ : Eating fast food like hot dogs, burgers raises risk of severe asthma

Explaining Asthma

Asthma causes the small tubes inside the lungs to swell and makes it harder to breath.

It is incurable, Affecting people of all ages and often starts in childhood.

Symptoms

Patients with asthma show the following symptoms:

Wheezing
Coughing
Breathlessness
Tight chest
An asthma attack happens when symptoms suddenly get worse.

The Research

A total of 34,776 French adults were studied using questionnaires – 28 per cent of the women and 25 per cent of the men had asthma.

To assess the effects of asthma people were asked to answer questions about their symptoms over a one-month period.

People's diet was measured using a daily food diary from which researchers randomly selected three days per person.

Diets high in fruit, vegetable and whole grain cereal are considered healthy, while meat, salt and sugar are less healthy.

The researchers took into account other factors known to be linked to asthma, such as smoking and exercise.

ALSO READ : Asthma; causes, symptoms, treament, complications.

The Result

They found men who eat a healthy diet have a 30 per cent lower chance of experiencing the symptoms of asthma, while women's risk is slashed by 20 per cent.

And men who already have asthma are 60 per cent less likely to have badly controlled symptoms if they eat healthily, while eating well reduces asthmatic women's symptoms by 27 per cent.

Lead researcher Dr Roland Andrianasolo said: 'Our results strongly encourage the promotion of healthy diets for preventing asthma symptoms and managing the disease.

'A healthy diet is mostly made up of a high intake of fruit, vegetables and fibre.

'These have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and are elements in a healthy diet that potentially lower symptoms.

'In contrast, the least healthy diets include high consumption of meat, salt and sugar, and these are elements with pro-inflammatory capacities that may potentially worsen symptoms of asthma.

Health / Re: Health Impacts Of Medical Marijuana by Ojietune: 12:18pm On Jul 16, 2018
Kweenuwa:
Medical marijuana or Medical cannabis is not fully accepted in many parts of the world. Recently the health impacts of medical marijuana is raving as a new survey, reported it reduced pain and decreased the need for opioid painkillers.

Medical cannabis are forms of cannabis recommended by doctors to the patients. Research have shown that cannabis is valuble in treating chronic pains, stimulates appetite, nausea, weight loss, and can be used to treat glaucoma, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease.

Another patient put it this way: "It [medical marijuana] is extremely effective and has allowed me to function in my work and life again. It has not completely taken away the pain, but allows me to manage it."

Study co-author Dr. Diana Martins-Welch said, "The impact of medical marijuana was overwhelmingly positive. Medical marijuana led them to taking less medications overall -- opioids and non-opioids -- and they had better function and better quality of life." Martins-Welch is a physician in the division of geriatric and palliative medicine at Northwell Health, in Great Neck, N.Y.

The biggest complaint the researchers heard about medical marijuana was the cost. "It's an out-of-pocket expense. Insurance doesn't cover it because it's federally illegal," Martins-Welch explained.

As for unwelcome side effects, Martins-Welch said sedation was what she heard about the most. "A lot of people don't like feeling sleepy," she said.

It's also important to work with your doctor to find the right dose, since pain experts say that too little or too much doesn't ease pain.

"Every state has its own laws, like what a qualifying condition is. There are a lot of differences. And you can't take a product from one state and cross another state line," Martins-Welch said.
Medical marijuana is different than just picking up some pot and smoking it.

The Study

The study included a 20-question survey of nearly 150 seniors who had used medical marijuana for chronic pain. The seniors had received their medical marijuana from dispensaries in New York or Minnesota.

The average age of the seniors was 61 to 70, and 54 percent were female. Many (45 percent) used a vaporized oil in an e-cigarette device. Twenty-eight percent used a medical marijuana pill.

Twenty-one percent said they used medical marijuana daily, while 23 percent said they used it twice a day. Another 39 percent said they used it more than twice a day, the researchers noted.

"The goal with medical marijuana is to find the dose that gives a therapeutic benefit without a high, or slowing reaction time or causing sedation," Martins-Welch said. "To find that right dose, we start low and go slow."

In fact, it's important to work with a doctor because there's a "therapeutic window" with THC, the active component in marijuana that causes the high, according to Dr. Mark Wallace, a board member of the American Pain Society.

If you get a dose that's within that window, the pain is relieved. If you get too little, you won't get pain relief, and if you go over the therapeutic window, pain is actually worsened, Wallace explained.

Health / One Orange A Day Reduces Blindness by Ojietune: 6:53pm On Jul 14, 2018
An orange a day could help prevent blindness a study found. The research shows that even eating an orange once a week seems to offer significant benefits as it reduces risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD),

'The data shows that flavonoids found in oranges appear to help protect against the disease.

'Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants found in almost all fruits and vegetables, and they have important anti-inflammatory benefits for the immune system.'

Our research is different because we focused on the relationship between flavanoids and macular degeneration.

'Flavanoids are powerful antioxodants found in almost all fruits and vegetables, and they have important anti-inflammatory benefits for the immune system.' Said Lead author Professor Bamini Gopinath, from the University of Sydney.

The Research

The researchers analysed 2,037 adults with an average age of 49 for up to 15 years.

The participants' diets were assessed via food questionnaires

Results suggest that eating oranges protects against AMD compared to never snacking on the fruit.

Health / Some Weird Contraception Methods Around The Globe by Ojietune: 10:54am On Jul 14, 2018
Some weird contraception method around the globe. Contraception have been on board right from ancient times from the use of potatoes, cotton, cola before the modern form. This weird form of contraception is still very much practise by some locals. Please don't practice this methods at home as it is dangerous and can cause infections.

Here is its list of weird contraception methods from around the globe:-

Milk and iodine.

In Kyrgyzstan, women have been known to drink milk and iodine after sex to prevent pregnancy. While mainly observed in the 1980s and 1990s, this method may still be used in remote areas. Iodine solution is toxic and can cause inflammation, burns to the oesophagus and stomach tissue, and hormonal imbalances.

Cola.

The beverage has also been used as a vaginal douche in North America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. This method, too, is ineffective and can cause tissue damage and infections. In some places, your regular coke is believed to have contraceptive properties. Young people in Angola have been known to drink it with aspiring after intercourse.

Potatoes

A 22-year-old woman in Colombia was hospitalized after the potato she was using as contraception began growing roots two weeks after she began using it. Apparently the woman had been told by her mother that such a method would work, reportedly because the mother was too afraid to actually talk to her daughter about sex.

Cotton

Women in ancient times were advised to grind dates, acacia tree bark and honey into a paste, apply it to seed wool, and insert the seed wool vaginally. The acacia in the cotton would ferment into lactic acid, which is an effective spermicide. Thousands of years later, American slave women would chew the bark of cotton root to prevent pregnancy, as it contains compounds that interfere with progesterone production, leaving a pregnancy unable to continue.

SEE : HOW POOR DIET DELAYS PREGNANCY

Disinfectant.

These can cause chemical burns, skin irritation and, if introduced into the uterus, even sepsis and death. But they do not stop sperm:

Vinegar.

Health workers in Moldova, Syria and Uzbekistan say some women apply vinegar to the vagina, either before or after intercourse, to prevent pregnancy. Vinegar “causes an imbalance in the natural bacterial balance in the vagina, which increases vaginal infections,” said Dr. Yasser Joha, a gynaecologist in Damascus
