Prepare for disease X ; minister advice Nigerians anytime as global warming and ease of transportation have made it easy for an outbreak in any country to get to another fast. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, gave the advice in his remarks at the University of Lagos Pro-Chancellor’s Distinguished Public Annual Lecture Series, on Monday in Lagos. The lecture was entitled “Responding to Nigeria’s Disease Outbreaks and Epidemics: Ebola, Zika and HIV. It was delivered by a Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Pyllis Kanki, Harvard School of Public Health, USA. “The slogan now at the World Health Organisation (WHO) headquarters is that we must prepare for Lassa fever, Ebola, Zika, HIV and disease X. “Where X is that disease that we do not know of, yet we should expect. “In other words, there will be another outbreak, what we do not know is the nature of the outbreak and where it is going to start from,’’ he said. He praised the University of Lagos for the lecture which, he said, was timely. “Talks on disease outbreak and epidemic will attract any minister of health who is serious; being here is another opportunity to steal ideas from the guest lecturer,” he said. Adewole said that universities must deliver public good besides conferring degrees and conducting researches. “To us in the health sector, this is public good,” he said. According to him, Nigeria has contained a number of disease outbreaks in recent years. He noted that the country contained Lassa fever outbreak in 2015 and resurgence of polio in 2016. “We also had outbreaks of cholera, measles and Yellow fever; so, we must be prepared. “What we have done is to invite WHO to conduct a joint external evaluation of our level of preparedness. . “This will help us to do our internal reassessment and position ourselves to handle not only current outbreaks, but future ones. “That assessment gave us a hint as to what should be done, as we also learnt lessons from the last Lassa fever outbreak where 75 per cent of cases came from Ondo, Edo and Ebonyi. “What we plan to do is to reposition materials and train more people,” the minister said. In the lecture, Kanki, said Nigeria had a history of infectious disease outbreaks which resulted in fatalities. The don said that some major outbreaks which began with meningitis in 1996, resulted in no fewer than12,000 fatalities. She listed the epidemics to include Lassa fever in 2018, Avian influenza in 2006 and 2015 and Ebola in 2014. According to her, a global cartogram of HIV showed that, of 34 million people living with HIV worldwide, 70 per cent was in Africa. “South Africa, Nigeria and India account for one-third of the global burden of HIV,” she said. The expert said that continuous research on the immunopathogenesis of pathogenes would enhance people’s understanding of disease development and improve prospects for effective diagnostics, drugs and vaccines. Kanki also said that continuous surveillance was vital to the public health of any country, adding that continuous surveillance of HIV drug resistance would help to evaluate the quality of HIV treatment programme. Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Dr Wale Babalakin, said that the objective of the lecture series was to increase knowledge of Nigerians. According to him, the lecture was also to harness talents from all areas of human endeavour to advance knowledge. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, promised that the lecture would be upheld in an effort to expand the frontiers of knowledge. https://medfort.com.ng/prepare-for-disease-x-minister-advice-nigerians/

Women unable to have children have been given new hope – after scientists developed an artificial ovary. A synthetic organ – made out of the woman's own tissue – could be transplanted into a female left infertile due to medical treatment. She could then go on to produce eggs naturally. The experiments will be unveiled today by Dr Susanne Pors from the Rigshospitalet Laboratory of Reproductive Biology in Copenhagen at the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) conference in Barcelona. Dr Pors said the artificial ovary technique allowed human eggs to develop 'in a tissue bed which is free of malignancies' in the laboratory. She added: 'This is the first time that isolated human follicles have survived in a decellularised human scaffold, and, as a proof-of-concept, it could offer a new strategy in fertility preservation without risk of malignant cell re-occurrence.' The breakthrough technique is being developed to help women and girls who face chemotherapy for cancer treatment. Chemotherapy drugs can render a woman infertile as they can destroy ovaries. One approach to prevent this is to freeze ovarian tissue – which produces eggs – ahead of chemo treatment and replace it afterwards. But cancer patients risk being re-exposed to cancerous cells harboured in the removed ovarian tis The new technique prevents this by stripping out all of the patients' potentially cancerous cells from the ovarian tissue, leaving just a 'scaffold' – a framework of protein which no longer contains any cells, removing the chance cancer could be lurking. http://medfort.com.ng/scientists-developed-an-artificial-ovary/

The researchers analysed 150 women who chose to freeze their eggs from four IVF clinics in the US and three in Israel. The researchers claim the reason for egg freezing 'mostly revolves around women's lack of stable partnerships with men committed to marriage and parenting'. Single women are freezing their eggs due them being unable to find men who will commit to a relationship, rather than to focus on their careers, new research suggests. Delaying motherhood to focus on work is the least common reason women undergo the procedure, a Yale University study found today. Most women who freeze their eggs are single, divorced or in broken relationships and wish to keep their options open, the research adds. http://medfort.com.ng/men-are-to-blame-for-women-freezing-their-eggs/

Sexual social media posts are promoting harmful shisha, new study suggest. The researchers, from from Florida International University, randomly selected 279 posts from 11,517 tagged #hookah or #shisha over four days in October 2016. Out of more than 11,500 Instagram posts at any one time, nearly all advocate hookah, with just 0.4 percent highlighting its health risks, a US study found. Researchers wrote: 'A growing body of evidence suggests that hookah smoking can lead to nicotine dependence and many other known smoking-related illnesses such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease.' Hashtags such as #hookahaddiction produce thousands of pictures of semi-naked women promoting shisha bars or appreciation societies under captions like 'hookah is sexy'. Some even call a dependency on so-called hubble bubble smoking a 'badge of honour'. Results suggest 29.2 per cent of shisha-related posts are created by hookah bars, while 35.5 per cent promote it as a social activity.

Nigerian Optometric Association, NOA, weekend said only 800 out of its 4000 members are engaged by government to provide eye care services to 186 million citizens. President of the association, Damian Echendu, in an interview with Vanguard, said this implied that one optometrist was expected to cater to the eye needs of about 232,000 people. He called on the government to employ more optometrist across the 776 Local Government Areas. He lamented that with an estimated 1% of Nigeria’s population suffering blindness due to preventable causes, the nation was still losing manpower from its pool of eye care specialists to hospitals in the Middle-East and Asia, because opportunities to engage them in public service have been lacking. He said: “Many of our 3,200 members, engaged in private practice, are leaving the shores of this country for hospitals in Asia and the Middle-East, especially Saudi Arabia because the government has not been engaging them. “So, we want the government to engage more of our members in the public sector. It can employ one more optometrist in each local government. At worse, one in each Senatorial District to serve more citizens particularly in the rural areas. Echendu urged the government to also increase the level of awareness on eye health and vision care among the populace with a view to preventing blindness through knowledge and information. He disclosed that NOA, on its part, has concluded plans to launch a free eye service care programme across the country for children between age 5 and 14 tagged: ‘My sight, my right’. http://medfort.com.ng/only-800-optometrists-are-engaged-in-public-sector-noa/

The FDA has approved the first ever wipes for excessive armpit sweating. This was announced on Friday, offers patients easy-to-use relief for an often embarrassing and uncomfortable condition. The treatment, Qbrexza, works by blocking receptors responsible for sweat gland activation and can be used once a day, the company said. About 10 million people are affected with the condition, known as primary axillary hyperhidrosis, which results in sweating beyond what is needed for regulating normal body temperature. The condition can affect a person's psychological well-being and overall quality of life due to constant stressing over the appearance of underarm sweat marks and working to conceal them. http://medfort.com.ng/fda-approves-first-ever-wipes-for-excessive-armpit-sweating/

Seb Cheer, 18, from Cardiff, a student at Leeds University took medication until last year to control his overactive bladder, and still takes it when he's not at home. When he started university this year there was one extra thing he had to plan for – without medication he risks wetting the bed. He is sharing his story in the hope other young people with the condition will be encouraged to be open about it. His condition means his bladder muscle contracts spontaneously and without his control – leading to a sudden urge to go to the toilet. 'Without my tablets, I'm taking a risk that I'll wet the bed,' the first year Leeds University student says. 'I can take that risk at home, because my bed is fitted with special absorbent sheets. I can't take that risk if I'm staying with friends or if I'm camping. http://medfort.com.ng/the-university-student-who-still-bedwet/

Abortion pills to be self adminstered at home in wales. Those seeking a termination of their pregnancy in Wales currently have to visit a clinic twice within three days to take two tablets. Women in Wales now be allowed to take an abortion pill at home, But the landmark change means thousands of women will be given the option of taking the latter pill, misoprostol, at home. They will still have to visit once to be given mifepristone, which blocks the effects of progesterone - a hormone crucial for maintaining a pregnancy. http://medfort.com.ng/abortion-pills-to-be-self-adminstered-at-home-in-wales/

For decades the disease has been considered to be two different forms - type one, an autoimmune disease in which people stop producing insulin, and type two, in which the body becomes resistant to insulin. The researchers, led by experts at Lund University, said the findings should prompt a ‘paradigm shift’ in the way people treat diabetes. They found type two diabetes should actually be categorised as four different diseases, Mild Age-Related Diabetes, Severe Autoimmune Diabetes, 1. Severe Autoimmune Diabetes Type 1 diabetes happens when the body launches an assault on the pancreas, stopping it from producing insulin. Which until now has been known as ‘type one’ diabetes - is an autoimmune disease in which people stop producing insulin. Usually strikes in childhood but can emerge in adults. Requires insulin injections for life. 2. Severe Insulin-Deficient Diabetes young people often misdiagnosed as having type one, but whose immune systems are fine. Actually a variant of type two diabetes, but often of a healthy weight. High blood sugar, low insulin production and moderate insulin resistance. 3. Severe Insulin-Resistant Diabetes is predominantly linked to obesity and severe insulin resistance. http://medfort.com.ng/five-new-types-of-diabetes/

Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection that can be passed from person to person through vaginal, oral or anal sex. Men are four times more likely to get treatment resistant gonorrhea than women are, new research reveals. New researchers at Tufts University have found that men are at far greater risks of catching one of these untreatable variations of gonorrhea according to mailonline. The sexually transmitted infection behaves very differently in men and women, typically causing clear, visible symptoms in men and none in women. Once a highly-curable disease, gonorrhea is now resistant to 'nearly every drug used for treatment,' according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms of gonorrhoea include discharge, bleeding or pain when urinating. But around one in two women and one in 10 men will not experience any signs, which is why the infection is so easily spread. It infects the urethra, resulting in white, yellow or green discharge for men. Women typically don't develop symptoms and, even if they do, they are so mild that gonorrhea is often mistaken for a bladder infection. http://medfort.com.ng/antibiotic-resistance-gonorrhea-on-the-rise-in-man/

Drug that cease Postpartum Haemorrhage. The medication, known as heat-stable carbetocin, may also save thousands of babies who are at an increased risk of death in the first month after their mothers suffered a postpartum haemorrhage, a World Health Organization (WHO) study found. A revamped drug that withstands extreme heat and has a 1,000-day shelf life could save the nearly 70,000 new mothers around the world who die from bleeding every year, new research suggests. When carbetocin was compared against the standard-of-care drug oxytocin, both medications were equally as effective at stopping bleeding, the research adds. Yet, oxytocin has to be stored between 2°C and 8°C from the moment it is manufactured to when it is used, making it unsuitable in countries with poor refrigeration access or unreliable power supplies. Heat-stable carbetocin is effective after three years at 30°C, making it better suited to hot and humid countries, according to the WHO. http://medfort.com.ng/drug-that-stop-postpartum-haemorrhage/

There is no discernible difference between male and female brains, study reveals. ‘People say men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but the brain is a unisex organ,’ Dr Eliot said on-stage at the Aspen Ideas Festival this week. ‘We have the exact same structures. ‘There is absolutely no difference between male and female brains.’ according to Dr Lise Eliot. The Chicago Medical School neuroscientist claims it is nurture rather than nature that is to blame for differences in male and female behaviour Dr Eliot's comment dispute previous studies which have claimed to reveal demonstrable differences in the structure of the organ. Dr Eliot said anyone searching for tangible differences between the make-up of the brain in men and women will be sorely disappointed, according to the Atlantic . Neuroscientists have yet to find a single circuit which is wired differently in either male or female brains, stated Dr Eliot, who penned the book ‘Pink Brain, Blue Brain’. Any differences between the sexes can be explained by our environment rather than our DNA. For example, Dr Eliot said that anyone – regardless of gender – can be competitive or aggressive, however, men and women have different methods of expressing those traits based on social norms. ‘We keep looking for a biological difference, finding it, it inevitably gets discredited, and yet we still seem so eager to find another one,’ she told the audience. Even the oft-cited statistic that male brains are around 10 per cent larger than female brains does not disprove the theory, Dr Eliot said, since all men’s organs are proportionally bigger on average. There is also no difference in function between the two, she claims. Debunking previous studies and long-held views that female brains are in some way different to their male counterparts is crucial to disrupt the current power structures, Dr Eliot said. The claims from the Chicago Medical School academic dispute a range of studies into the differences between the male and female brain. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania scanned the brains of 1,000 men, women, boys and girls to determine whether there was a difference in the wiring between the genders. The experts concluded that the male brain is wired from front to back whereas the female brain is crisscrossed from left to right. Published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , the University of Pennsylvania researchers said the differences in wiring would explain why men tend to be better at performing one task, such as cycling, while woman are more equipped for multi-tasking. However, Dr Eliot believes the wide-ranging conclusions extrapolated from the researchers’ observations into neutral circuitry were overstretched. The 'Pink Brain, Blue Brain' author points to the fact that the average age of the participant in the University of Pennsylvania study was '15 years of age', meaning most of the subjects were 'mid-way through brain development'. In older participants, the striking differences in neural wiring were much less noticeable. http://medfort.com.ng/no-distinction-between-female-and-male-brains-study-reveals/

Andrew, from Manchester was born with bladder exstrophy, a rare birth defect that means the organ formed on the outside of his body. Although he has one testicle, the one-in-20-million condition meant Andrew was born without a manhood. As a child he underwent a surgical procedure to create an artificial opening known as a stoma in his urinary system. He had countless operations to build a tube from his bladder so he could pass water normally and suffered from kidney problems A British man who was born without manhood is preparing to have s*x for the first time after being fitted with a bionic manhood. Andrew Wardle successfully underwent the final stage of a £50,000 penile implant operation at University College Hospital London on Friday and has been given the all clear to finally lose his virginity. As a test run, the 44-year-old will have an erection for the next ten days before his implant is deflated. Doctors have told Andrew he must then wait six weeks before having s*x with his long-term girlfriend Fedra Fabian. http://medfort.com.ng/man-fitted-with-50k-bionic-manhood/

Smoking a single joint of cannabis raises the risk of schizophrenia by more than 40%, reported the Daily Mail . Cannabis “could be to blame for one in seven cases of schizophrenia and other life-shattering mental illness,” it said. Professor Robin Murray, an authority on schizophrenia at King’s College London, said about 50,000 people were now diagnosed as psychotic solely because they used the drug while teenagers. Many had no family history of psychosis and would have had no risk of developing the disease if they had not smoked high-strength cannabis, he claimed. Professor Murray said: ‘If you smoke heavy, high-potency cannabis, your risk of psychosis increases about five times. ‘A quarter of cases of psychosis we see in south London would not have happened without use of high-potency cannabis. It is more prevalent in that area, but the figure for Britain would be one in six – or approximately 50,000 people.’ Cannabis can make users feel paranoid, experience panic attacks and hallucinations, and it is also linked to depression and anxiety. Many experts claim it is only people who are predisposed to psychosis who develop it after smoking cannabis. http://medfort.com.ng/smoking-cannabis-linked-to-schizophrenia/

If your noisy neighbours have ever left you feeling at the end of your tether, then you’re not alone. For a study has found that living next to loud neighbours more than doubles your risk of mental illness and almost trebles the chances of suffering severe stress. Experts found rates of depression were twice as high among homeowners constantly bombarded by a racket from nearby premises. The University of Southern Denmark, in Copenhagen, spent three years studying more than 7,000 residents, most of whom lived in high-rise flats, quizzing them on noise levels and their mental health status. Those who said they had noisy neighbours were nearly two-and-a-half times more likely to have depression and anxiety and almost three times as likely to score high stress levels. Late night parties and loud music were cited as the most common bugbears. But noise from building works was also a major catalyst. The poll also found 40 per cent had suffered stress as a result of noise disputes and one in ten rows ended in violence. In a report on the findings, published in the European Journal of Public Health, researchers said: ‘Noise exposure is a well-known risk factor for multiple adverse health effects. ‘There is a strong relationship between noise annoyance and poor mental health and high levels of perceived stress.’ http://medfort.com.ng/living-next-to-noisy-neighbours-risk-mental-illness/

Acne affects more than 90 per cent of adolescents aged between 16 and 18 years and up to 20 per cent of adult women. We all long for blemish-free skin, but many of us are plagued by pimples well after our teenage years. There are dangers of using multiple acne product So if you're finding yourself with breakouts into your 20s, 30s and beyond, what can you do? According to Sydney-based dermatologist Dr Natasha Cook, the first step is to examine your skincare routine. She says to avoid removing dirt and bacteria with anything that foams or scrubs '[The biggest mistake is over cleansing. Either too frequently or with foaming or scrub like products or both,' she says. 'Mainstream beliefs are based on ''washing'' acne and congestion away. This is so wrong. 'Washing and drying the skin out makes it worse,' she explains. 'Skin needs moisture so the cell exfoliating enzymes can work and therefore prevent congestion.' Dr Cook says washing and drying the skin out creates a reactive oiliness. '[This is] where the skin goes into hyper drive and produces excess oil to replace what you are stripping out. Again creating more issues,' she says. 'Product like the ones that contains benzoyl peroxide further strip down the epidermal barrier creating more irritation and dryness. 'Avoid foaming cleansers and scrubs like the plague,' she adds. http://medfort.com.ng/the-dangers-of-using-multiple-acne-product/

Blue Origin, the rocket company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, aims to begin selling tickets for suborbital space flights to tourists next year, Space News reported. If you’ve had a hankering to be a space tourist, you may soon get your chance. Speaking at the Amazon Web Services Public Sector Summit in Washington, DC last week, Rob Meyerson, a senior vice-president at Blue Origin, echoed the company’s previous updates that it plans to start testing manned rockets later in the year. But he added a new wrinkle at the conference: “We expect to start selling tickets in 2019,” he said. So far, there has been scant information about when this service would start, or how much it would cost. Meyerson didn’t give any indication on how much those tickets would cost, and Bezos said in May that the company hadn’t determined the price yet. It seems pretty likely that it’s not exactly going to be an affordable jaunt for most. Still, it’s probably going to be cheaper than the two tourists Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans to transport around the moon in 2022. http://medfort.com.ng/jeff-bezoss-blue-origin-will-start-selling-tickets-for-space-flights-in-2019/

Nearly 57 million died worldwide in 2016, and more than half of them were due to the top 10 causes, according to an analysis released by the World Health Organisation. Heart disease and stroke are the biggest killers. Between them, both diseases caused a combined 15.2m deaths in 2016. They have kept a record for being leading causes of deaths around the world in the last 15 years. Pulmonary diseases caused 3million deaths in the period, and lung cancers claimed 1.7m lives. Diabetes killed 1.6m people, up from less than 1m in 2000. Dementia stepped in as the 5th leading cause of death, up from 14 position in 2000. Number of deaths due to dementia doubled in the period. Infections in the respiratory tract remained the most deadly communicable disease, claiming 3m lives. Diarrhoeal diseases deaths decreased by almost 1m between 2000 and 2016 but still killed 1.4m that year. Tuberculosis deaths have reduced but the disease remains among the top 10 killers, accounting for 1.3m lives. Road injuries killed 1.4 million people. Around three in every four killed in road injuries were men and boys. Deaths by economic groups. More than half of all deaths in low-income countries in 2016 were caused by the so-called “Group I” conditions, which include communicable diseases, maternal causes, conditions arising during pregnancy and childbirth, and nutritional deficiencies. By contrast, less than 7% of deaths in high-income countries were due to such causes. http://medfort.com.ng/top-ten-causes-of-death-globally/

If you have dated a girl on a regular basis for several months now and suddenly there are some negative changes on her behavior and responses to you. There is a possibility that the girl is no longer interested in you. Here are some of the few signs you can check on your relationship with her 1. She doesn’t respond on time to your text messages or just ignores it with no explanation. 2. She doesn’t answer your call especially during the day and doesn’t even bother to return the call. It might be that she is calling someone else and not you anymore. 3. You are the last of her priority of the day. She would only respond to your text message or call you during midnight when she is about to dose off and you have zero communication line with her during the day. She has regarded you as the least important person in her life now. 4. She has a set of reasons for not being more involved, like when she forgets the appointment or date with you. Her reasons leave little room for debate, such as focusing on her career, hurt by an ex or she is too busy to give time and energy. If she were. interested, she would find solutions, not excuses. 5. She stops holding your hand in public places and keeps distant from you during walking. 6. She doesn’t talk much anymore of how her day went by as she usually does before. 7. She is emotionally unavailable when you need her most. She is never concerned about your well- being. Click here to read more : http://medfort.com.ng/how-to-know-your-girl-has-lost-interest-in-you/

Gaming Addiction, a mental disorder. Gaming disorder is, well, a disease, according to a new classification by the World Health Organisation. In the latest revision to the International Classification of Disease (ICD11), WHO says compulsively playing video games now qualifies as a mental health condition—one known as “gaming disorder”, with code 6C51. The categorisation confirms what some parents have feared and has led critics to warn it may risk stigmatising too many young video players. It is the first time the classification will include “gaming disorder”. Its last revision 18 years ago—the ICD10—included “gambling disorder, especially offline. Now the inclusion of online gaming updates the classification for 21st-century problems and realities of mental health disorders. “Gambling disorder was included in ICD 10 but gaming has now been added because of very clear, scientific evidence that it has characteristic signs and symptoms and there is need and demand for treatment from many regions of the world,” says Dr. Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO’s department for mental health and substance abuse. Only a minority of people who game will satisfy the strict criteria for gaming order, but having signs and symptoms clearly spelt out will aid diagnosis. “That’s why it has been inserted, and obviously this will help people to become more aware about this entity and also seek and get treatment.” The ICD is a common, global classification to map and classify disease and injury around the world. It allows health workers, policymakers, programme planners and implementers in health care to have a common register. ICD categories for mental disorders have “simplified and diagnostic descriptions have been put in so that they are easily understood and easily applied by any health care worker.” “For mental disorders, the treatment gap is very high. Out of 100 people who suffer from mental disorders, on an average 70 to 80 do not receive any treatment.” WHO’s objective is to simplify the procedure so every health care provider can easily identify and treat the conditions, which will help decrease the burden. So what is gaming disorder? According to ICD11, the condition is characterised by a pattern of “persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour”—of digital or video game—primarily on the internet. It is manifested by impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences. Those born in 21st Century are set to become the first generation with worse health than their parents as they face greater health risk , a study has warned. People in their 20s and 30s will be at greater risk of ‘lifestyle’ illnesses such as cancers, diabetes and heart disease in 30 years’ time. Young people face greater long-term stress, anxiety and depression due to the rise of insecure work arrangements, a report by the Health Foundation think-tank has found. It also says people in their 20s have to manage friendships and relationships digitally as well as in person. The long-term effects of this shift in communication are unknown. Earlier this year the Office for National Statistics revealed that millennials were more likely to suffer from chronic loneliness than any other age group. The latest study links poor health to a rise in the gig economy as more graduates sign up to zero-hours contracts. It highlights research linking insecure work with stress. http://medfort.com.ng/born-in-21st-century-you-face-greater-health-risk/

A deadly infection spread by rats has reached record levels in the number of hospital appointments taken up by people suffering from the illness. Hospital sessions for people suffering from Weil's disease, which is spread by rats' urine, are three times the level three years ago and are now at unprecedented levels. The illness, which can be difficult to diagnose without sophisticated tests, attacks the kidneys and liver, and claims the life of around one or two people every year. Weil's disease bacteria can enter the body through cuts and scratches and are found in contaminated water in ponds and slow-flowing rivers. The infection can cause life-threatening organ failure – and up to five per cent of cases are thought to be fatal – but it is treatable with antibiotics. One expert claims the rise in cases could be partly due to more people doing adventure activities and water sports. Between one and five per cent of cases are fatal The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says between one and five per cent of cases are fatal. British Olympic rowing champion Andy Holmes, 51, died of the infection in 2010. It is believed he contracted the illness after racing on a waterway in Lincolnshire, where the bacteria could have entered his body through blisters on his hands. The sharp rise in Weil's disease – also known as leptospirosis – comes as stronger poisons are increasingly being needed to crack down on a 'rat epidemic'. l http://medfort.com.ng/a-deadly-disease-spread-by-rat-resurface/

Meet 22 years old Tia Freeman, from Nashville, that used youtube to deliver her baby, She initially told her story in a series of tweets, where she claims she mistook the start of her labour for food poisoning. She told Newsbeat she was "in autopilot" and the birth was "all kind of a blur". Both Tia and her baby boy are both now doing well. It began with a pregnancy test, a trip to Germany, and a layover in Turkey. 22-year-old Tia says she didn't realise she was expecting until towards the end of pregnancy "I found out mid-January," she said. "I gained just under 20lbs (5kg) the entire pregnancy, so weight gain was little indication." In fact, Tia thought the weight gain was normal "seeing as though I hadn't been to the gym in a while". But eventually, "it started to round out in the typical pregnancy fashion", prompting her to take a test. Despite learning the news, Tia claims she was "in denial" and decided not to tell anyone. Instead, she went on a trip to Germany, believing she'd be "all good in the hood" if the baby came on time. But things got tricky when she began experiencing cramps during her 14-hour flight. Tia thought it might be food poisoning - but by the time she'd landed in Turkey, her layover destination, she was sweating and felt like she was about to vomit. http://medfort.com.ng/meet-the-lady-that-used-youtube-to-deliver-her-baby/

Video: Brazil 1 – 1 Switzerland (June-17-2018) FIFA World Cup Highlights. Brazil 1 – 1 Switzerland – Brazil held by Switzerland. Brazil denied and Switzerland have a precious point. Pre-tournament favourites Brazil failed to win their opening game of a World Cup for the first time since 1978 as Switzerland earned a valuable draw in Rostov-on-Don. The five-time champions, so often lauded for their flair, failed to sparkle after Philippe Coutinho’s superbly curled opener on 20 minutes. Tite’s side – with Gabriel Jesus and Willian alongside Neymar in a front three – could offer only fleeting moments of fluid play and Steven Zuber’s header from a corner earned the Swiss a deserved point. Brazil may point to a push by Zuber to free him from his marker but the fact Coutinho’s strike remained their only effort on target until 77 minutes points to their struggles in the final third. The draw brings to an end a run of nine wins in their opening World Cup fixture and both sides now trail Serbia, who beat Costa Rica earlier in Group E. download video here http://medfort.com.ng/video-brazil-1-1-switzerland-june-17-2018-fifa-world-cup-highlights/

Video: Germany 0 – 1 Mexico (June-17-2018) FIFA World Cup Highlights. Germany 0 – 1 Mexico – Defending champions Germany made a disastrous start to their bid to win back-to-back World Cups with a shock defeat by Mexico. Hirving Lozano’s first-half goal was the difference between the two sides in an enthralling encounter in Moscow, but the surprising result was not the only concern for Germany coach Joachim Low. His disjointed side looked extraordinarily vulnerable on the break even before Javier Hernandez punished them with the pass that set up Lozano to cut inside fire home. Toni Kroos almost replied instantly with a free-kick but Guillermo Ochoa tipped it on to the bar and that was the closest Germany came to an equaliser. Despite facing some sustained late pressure, Mexico held on to inflict a first World Cup defeat on Die Mannschaft since they lost to Spain in the 2010 semi-final. This was also the first time a German side had lost their opening game of this tournament since 1982, when West Germany were upset by Algeria. It could turn out to be a damaging defeat too. Although Germany will still be expected to beat Sweden and South Korea and progress, the runner-up in Group F will face a last-16 tie against the Group E winner, expected to be Brazil. download video here http://medfort.com.ng/video-germany-0-1-mexico-june-17-2018-fifa-world-cup-highlights/

Using soothing music to wind down before bed each night is encouraged as a relaxation technique. It turns out that bedtime listening to your favorite song before bed can even help people with sleep disorders by boosting sleep quality and quantity. Putting on some tunes can help you fall asleep faster, wake up less during the night, and feel more rested in the morning. Music can help sleepers of all ages, from toddlers through the elderly, at naptime and nighttime alike. Music is more than something that’s simply enjoyable to listen to. It has a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps your body relax and prepare for sleep. Older adults who listen to 45 minutes of relaxing music before bed fall asleep faster, sleep longer, wake up less during the night, and rate their nights as more restful than when they don’t listen to music. Similarly, when younger adults are given the option to listen to classical music, books on tape, or nothing before bed, the ones who relax with music see the greatest improvement in sleep quality. If you feel calmer when you’re enjoying good music, it’s not your imagination. Music has the power to slow your heart rate and http://medfort.com.ng/listening-to-your-favorite-song-before-bed/
