About 360,000 children in Africa were given the world's first malaria vaccine in a 'historic milestone'.

Experts have hailed the move, which see kids in Malawi, Kenya and Ghana immunised against the infection.

Studies conducted between 2009 and 2014 in Africa revealed four doses of RTS,S led to 'significant reductions' in malaria and its complications.

The vaccine prevented four in ten 'standard' cases of the disease and three in ten severe ones.

It also stopped six in ten incidents of severe malaria anaemia.

'We have seen tremendous gains from bed nets and other measures to control malaria in the last 15 years,' said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO's director-general.

'But progress has stalled and even reversed in some areas.

'We need new solutions to get the malaria response back on track and this vaccine gives us a promising tool to get there.

'The malaria vaccine has the potential to save tens of thousands of children's lives.'

RTS,S, works by causing the immune system to attack the malaria parasite.

Malawi launched the jab, with Kenya and Ghana following suit over the next few weeks.

These three countries were chosen for an initial trial because they have a high number of malaria cases, despite their strong prevention and vaccination programmes.

The vaccine, which has been 30 years in the making, will be administered in three doses to children aged five-to-nine months old, with the fourth dose being given around their second birthday.

Order, label, and count stock of medications, chemicals, and supplies, and enter inventory data into computer.
Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, and inform pharmacist of stock needs and shortages.

Multiple miscarriages may be linked to the poor quality of a man’s sperm, suggests new research.

The early-stage study, from scientists at Imperial College London, investigated the sperm quality of 50 men whose partners had suffered three or more consecutive miscarriages.

The research, published in the journal Clinical Chemistry, revealed that, compared to men whose partners had not experienced miscarriages, the sperm of those involved in the study had higher levels of Deoxy ribonucleic Acid (DNA)/genetic material damage.

The study team hopes these findings may open new avenues to finding treatments to reduce the risk of miscarriage.

Recurrent miscarriage affects around one in 50 couples in the UK, and is defined as the consecutive loss of three of more pregnancies before 20 weeks gestation.

Until recently recurrent miscarriage was thought to be caused by health issues with the mother, such as infection or immune problems.

However, doctors are now realising sperm health may also play a role, explained Dr. Channa Jayasena, lead author of the research from Imperial’s Department of Medicine: “Traditionally doctors have focused attention on women when looking for the causes of recurrent miscarriage. The men’s health — and the health of their sperm, was not analysed.

“However, this research adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests sperm health dictates the health of a pregnancy. For instance, previous research suggests sperm has an important role in the formation of the placenta, which is crucial for oxygen and nutrient supply to the foetus.”

Meanwhile, new research suggests a weekly dose of olive oil could be better than Viagra at helping boost a man’s performance in the bedroom.

Scientists from the University of Athens, Greece says just nine tablespoons of the popular condiment is enough to reduce impotence by around 40 per cent.

Olive oil has a wealth of health benefits including keeping blood vessels healthy and maintaining circulation throughout the body.
