HealthHow To Boost Sperm Health by ojiezaky(op): 5:18pm On Sep 11, 2018
HOW TO BOOST SPERM HEALTH
Stress is one of the worst things for a man’s fertility — but it’s not the only factor. Here are some other simple steps men can take to help protect their fertility by looking after their sperm health.
in article

WEIGHT LOSS
Obesity is a factor in infertility, and more than 60 per cent of the population is overweight or obese. In 2017, scientists from the Centre for Assisted Reproduction at the Krishna IVF Clinic in Visakhapatnam, India, studied 1,285 men and found those who were obese had lower sperm counts and poorer quality sperm.

NORMAL TEMPERATURE
The testicles hang outside of the body for good reason — the ideal temperature for sperm production is 34.5c (body temperature is 37c).
Cooler testicles produce sperm more effectively, says Allan Pacey, a professor of andrology at the University of Sheffield.
Wearing tight-fitting underwear or sitting still in a warm car or room for hours can cause overheating and stop sperm production. That’s why men trying to conceive are generally advised to wear loose boxer shorts and avoid prolonged periods of sitting.

SLEEPING EARLY
An early night might seem an obvious tip for a man wanting to become a father — but not for the reason you imagine.
A 2017 study at Harbin Medical University in China found men who hit the hay between 8pm and 10pm had higher sperm counts than those who went to bed later — even if they got a similar amount of sleep.
Late bedtimes are thought to increase levels of anti-sperm antibody, a protein produced by the immune system which can destroy sperm.
Professor Pacey adds: ‘Too much sleep — more than nine hours a night — seems to be just as harmful as too little, six hours or less.’
Studies found men who sleep too much or too little tend to drink more and are more likely to smoke, which may harm sperm quality.

QUIT SMOKING
One in five men smokes regularly. In 2016, a World Health Organisation study tracked 5,000 men across Europe and found that tobacco use not only reduced the amount of sperm produced, but damaged their motility, size and shape. Research has found that toxins from tobacco penetrate sperm and start to break up the DNA strands. These strands carry the codes needed for a healthy sperm cell.

DON’T BINGE DRINK

HealthEbola Death Toll Hits 82 In DR Congo by ojiezaky(op): 5:43pm On Sep 05, 2018
Ebola death toll hits 82 in an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
11 new cases have been reported since August 28, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports.
Nearly 70 per cent of people thought to have been infected have died of the disease, but DRC health officials are rolling out experimental drugs to treat patients, and at least two people have recovered following treatment.

The WHO’s latest situation report on the outbreak, released yesterday, said ‘recent trends suggest control measures are working’

The Ebola virus is spreading near the city of Beni in the North Kivu region in the DRC’s north-east, near the border with Uganda.

Some 16 health workers have caught the virus and one has died from it.

Since the outbreak began, officials have identified 4,296 people who have been in contact with those who caught the virus. More than half of those people are still being monitored.

And the country’s efforts to keep the outbreak from spiralling out of control have been praised as a ‘global first and a ray of hope’ by the WHO.

UNICEF this week said it has now reached 2,454,000 people with its Ebola prevention messages in the past month.

‘An increasing number of communities are now aware about Ebola and how to prevent its transmission,’ said Dr Gianfranco Rotigliano, a UNICEF representative.
‘The active involvement of concerned communities is key to stopping the spread of the disease.

‘We are working closely with them to promote hand-washing and good hygiene practices, and to identify and assist people that might be infected with the virus.’

At-risk populations are being reached through community engagement, radio, door-to-door activities, church meetings and adolescent groups, and prevention messages are shared in four different languages.

HealthEating Moderate Amount Of Carbs Lower Premature Death by ojiezaky(op): 9:35am On Aug 18, 2018
Eating moderate amount of carbs lower premature death Harvard finds. The study goes some way to ending the decades-old debate about whether cutting carbs or fat is the best way to improve health.{ Food with ‘Fats and carbs are more rewarding’ }

The healthiest approach, it suggests, is to eat a balanced diet with nutrients in moderation.

And it raises concerns that the increasingly popular all-or-nothing ‘exclusion’ diets can do severe damage to people’s health.

The findings also support the advice of Public Health England - which suggests starchy carbohydrates should form the main components of a healthy diet.

The US scientists also looked at the combined results of previous studies including 432,000 people from more than 20 countries, which confirmed their findings.

They found that the biggest risk of cutting carbohydrates was if people replaced it with meat and cheese.

If they instead started eating more plant-based food - such as vegetables, lentils, beans and nuts - the risk was lower.

Researcher Dr Sara Seidelmann, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said: ‘We need to look really carefully at what are the healthy compounds in diets that provide protection.

‘Low-carb diets that replace carbohydrates with protein or fat are gaining widespread popularity as a health and weight loss strategy.

‘However, our data suggests that animal-based low carbohydrate diets, which are prevalent in North America and Europe, might be associated with shorter overall life span and should be discouraged.’

The authors recruited 15,528 adults aged 45 to 64, and then tracked them for 25 years.

Of the original group, 6,283 people died over the study period.

But those who had low carb consumption were 20 per cent more likely to die than those with a moderate consumption.

The researchers extrapolated these results to estimate that someone who was aged 50 with a moderate carbohydrate intake could expect to live another 33 years - taking them to age 83.

Those with a low carbohydrate intake could expect to live to 79 - four years fewer.

And those with a high carb intake could expect to live to 82, one year less than the moderate group.

Co-author Professor Walter Willett of Harvard School of Public Health, said: ‘These findings bring together several strands that have been controversial.

‘Too much and too little carbohydrate can be harmful but what counts most is the type of fat, protein, and carbohydrate.’

HealthFear Of Birth 'tokophobia' Affects Up To 22% Of Women by ojiezaky(op): 7:45am On Aug 18, 2018
This severe fear of birth is called tokophobia – which literally means a phobia of childbirth. And for some women, this also includes a dislike or disgust with pregnancy. 'Tokophobia' affects up to 22% of women.

Types of Tokophobia

Tokophobia can be split into two types – primary and secondary.

Primary tokophobia occurs in women who have not given birth before. For these women, a fear of birth tends to come from traumatic experiences in their past – including sexual abuse. It can also be linked to witnessing a difficult birth or listening to stories or watching programmes which portray birth as embarrassing or dangerous.

Whereas women who suffer from secondary tokophobia, tend to have had a previous traumatic birth experience which has left them with a fear of giving birth again

It is difficult to say how common tokophobia is. Research suggests that between 2.5 percent and 14 percent of women are affected by tokophobia. But some researchers believe this figure could be as high as 22 percent.

These figures vary so much because women with different levels of tokophobia were included in the research.

HealthViagra Could Restore Blindness by ojiezaky(op): 9:12pm On Aug 13, 2018
Viagra could restore blindness . A two-year trial led by scientists at Columbia University in New York suggests the little blue pills could stop age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, in its tracks.

Around 90 per cent of cases involve dry AMD, a form of the disease which comes on slowly over several years. The rest involve wet AMD, which can cause blindness in as little as three months.

Dry AMD usually develops after the age of 50 and is caused by the growth of new blood vessels over the macula, a small oval-shaped area at the back of the eye that helps us pick out visual details clearly.

Also Read : One orange a day reduces blindness

These blood vessels leak fluid, causing scar tissue to form and destroying vision in the centre of the eye – making it difficult to recognise faces, read or watch television.

Recent research has found the condition is partly caused by reduced blood flow to the choroid, a vital layer of tissue that sits in front of the retina – and some small earlier studies had suggested Viagra can improve blood flow to this tissue.

In the Columbia study, five elderly patients with AMD were given two Viagra pills a day for two years.

The results, published in the journal Ophthalmologica, showed the drug improved vision for one participant and completely halted deterioration for the others.

Some drugs can already slow progression of AMD and increase vision in some cases, but the medicines have to be injected into the back of the eye every month.

Consequently, the EYSDC implements her policies, activities and strategic action plans, as well as the ECOWAS vision in the areas of youth and sports, including the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme. The EYSDC’s objective is to initiate, develop, coordinate and implement youth and sports programmes within the Community. To this end, it works to:

                   Mobilise the different segments of the population to ensure their integration and effective participation in the social development of the region, as well as the promotion of youth organisations and professional associations to ensure maximum participation in the activities of the Community;

Provide a permanent institutional framework within ECOWAS through which issues related to Youth and Sports activities in the sub-region can be developed and promoted.

Organizational Framework of the Centre

The Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC) is one of the Directorates under the Social Affairs and Gender Department of the ECOWAS Commission. It is based in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) under the headquarters agreement signed between the Burkina Faso authorities and the ECOWAS Commission.

Decision N° A/DEC 13/01/2005 of 19th January 2005 had adopted the organizational structure comprising of four Divisions (Youth, Sports, Administration and Finance, and TIC). However, since 2008, the Centre has undergone some structural modifications following the transfer of the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme (EVP) from the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department of the Commission (CPAPS) to the EYSDC, under the Social Affairs and Gender Department.

The EVP is centralized in organisation, but decentralized in its application to allow for flexibility and adaptation to the current realities of each country. The strategic directions, including the formulation of the overall vision, goals and objectives of the Programme, is the responsibility of the Regional Coordination Council (RCC), whose role, among others, is to ensure that the EVP becomes a genuine voluntary arm of ECOWAS.

Being a cross-cutting programme, the ECOWAS Volunteers Regional Coordination Council (RCC) includes representatives of relevant departments of the ECOWAS Commission. The RCC is chaired by the Commissioner for Social Affairs and Gender of the ECOWAS Commission. She is assisted by the Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC), as Alternate Chairman of the RCC.

The executive arm of the RCC is the Regional Office, provided by the EYSDC in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). The programme’s regional coordination activities are coordinated by a Regional Coordinator under the supervision of the EYSDC Director. Although the EVP is under the Youth Division of the EYSDC, it is directly supervised by the EYSDC Director for effectiveness.

At the National level, the National Coordination Council (NCC) serves as the national body through which national policy guidelines for the Programme are given. This Council works towards the understanding and entrenchment of the Volunteer Programme in the national environment. It also serves as advisor to the country office, which is responsible for the coordination of the Programme at national level. The NCC is chaired by the Head of the ECOWAS National Office in the country. It is made up of Focal Points/Representatives of the various ministries, Civil Society Organisations, United Nations Agencies and local youth associations involved in the implementation of the Programme at the National level.

HealthSpider Venom Could Treat Epilepsy by ojiezaky(op): 1:51pm On Aug 08, 2018
Spider venom could treat
. That’s the claim made by researchers from the University of Queensland and the Florey Institute of Neuroscience, this week, who believe arachnid peptides could control convulsions associated with Dravet Syndrome.

Professor Glenn King said the study in mice could be an important step towards better therapeutic strategies for the rare and life-threatening type of epilepsy developed by children in their first year of life.

‘About 80 per cent of Dravet syndrome cases are caused by a mutation in a gene called SCN1A,’ Professor King said.

‘When this gene doesn’t work as it should, sodium channels in the brain which regulate brain activity do not function correctly.

‘In our studies, the peptide from spider venom was able to target the specific channels affected by Dravet, restoring the function of the brain neurons and eliminating seizures.’

Professor King said the discovery, made in collaboration with The Florey’s Professor Steven Petrou, was the latest to demonstrate the unique effectiveness of spider venom in treating nervous system disorders.

‘Spiders kill their prey through venom compounds that target the nervous system, unlike snakes for example, whose venom targets the cardiovascular system,’ he said.

HealthSmoking Shisha Is Dangerous For Your Heart As Cigarettes by ojiezaky(op): 5:24am On Aug 06, 2018
Smoking shisha is dangerous fo your heart as cigarettes, research suggests. Researchers at the University of California , Los Angeles (UCLA) discovered shisha smoking had the same short-term cardiovascular effects as cigarettes.

For the last several decades, tobacco companies have had no choice but to admit that their hallmark products - cigarettes - are dangerous.

Hoever that hasn't stopped them from pushing other products.

Their campaigns seem to have worked, particularly among teenagers who are smoking e-cigarettes and hookah more and more.

Now, about 10 percent of teens are thought to use shisha, accounting for about half of all the smoking that the age group does, according to a British Medical Journal study published earlier this year.

'We know that flavored tobacco products are frequently the first kind of tobacco product used by youth,' lead study author Mary Rezk-Hanna said.

'One of the major issues with hookah is the fact that the tobacco is flavored with fruit, candy and alcohol flavors, making hookah the most popular flavored tobacco product among this audience.'

These young people and adult users alike may be unwittingly vulnerable to just as many toxic chemicals and physical stressors as cigarette smokers are.

Hashish has just as much tobacco - and therefore nicotine - as cigarettes, and its smoke still contains carbon monoxide, tar heavy metals and other carcinogenic chemicals.

The effects on their hearts and cardiovascular systems may be disastrous, according to the new UCLA study.

How the study was done
To test their theory, the researchers took measures of a number of vital signs from 48 young, healthy hookah smokers before they smoked and compared them to stats taken after they spent 30 minutes smoking fruit-flavored hashish.

The effects of hookah smoke on their hearts were clear.

A normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. After a hookah session, participants' heart rates rose by an average of 16 beats per minute, making them as much as one quarter faster.

Unsurprisingly, their nicotine and carbon monoxide levels shot up too, as did their blood pressure.

But it was the first time that scientists observed the direct effects of shisha smoke on arteries.

HealthBeer Reduces Heart Risk And Improves Brain Health by ojiezaky(op): 6:13am On Aug 04, 2018
Beer reduces heart risk and improves brain health according to scientists who've published research in The American Journal of the Medical Sciences.

They claim beer boasts more protein and B vitamins than wine, is high in antioxidants and can reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular disease.

'The antioxidant content of beer is equivalent to that of wine, but the specific antioxidants are different because the barley and hops used in the production of beer contain flavonoids different from those in the grapes used in the production of wine,' the study says.

'Physicians should be aware of the growing evidence supporting the nutritional and health benefits of moderate consumption of alcohol as part of a healthy lifestyle.'

Nutritionist Sisi Yip told the South China Morning Post : 'Beer contains trace amounts of minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium, fluoride, and silicon.

'Beer also includes a range of polyphenols such as flavonoids and phenolic acids that contribute directly to flavour, haze, body and fullness.

Polyphenols are naturally-occurring compounds found in plants, including flavonoids and phenolic acid, that benefit the human body and help fight disease.

When ingested, they can help to reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes, and heart disease, while also protecting cognitive function.

Drinking beer can also lead to greater levels of high-density lipoprotein - AKA good cholesterol. This helps to thin the blood and remove plaque in the arteries.

HealthBabies Dies In Viagra Trial Tragedy by ojiezaky(op): 8:57am On Jul 27, 2018
Earlier this week, a study came to a surprising and heartbreaking halt. Babies dies in viagra trial tragedy. A Dutch drug trial looking into the effects of sildenafil — the generic version of Viagra — on a rare but serious fetal-development condition was cut short after 11 infants, born to mothers who had taken the drug while pregnant, died, The Guardian reported yesterday (July 24).

But why were pregnant women given the drug to begin with?

using a men’s erectile-dysfunction drug for pregnancy problems may sound unusual, the odd treatment — and investigations into how it can help this particular fetal-development condition — has actually been around for years.

What is viagra

Viagra is in the category of medications known as vasodilators, meaning it opens up blood vessels, increasing blood flow. The effect can give men a boost when they need more blood flow to a particular area. And under the set of conditions that the Dutch research team examined, boosting a pregnant woman's blood flow to the placenta could have really helped the fetus.

Understanding the research

The trial was focused on pregnant women with fetuses that had a condition called early-onset fetal growth restriction. Simply put, the condition basically means there isn’t enough blood flow to the placenta, said Dr. Ahmet Baschat, the director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Fetal Therapy at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

This can happen either because the mother’s blood vessels aren't providing enough blood to the placenta, or because the baby’s blood vessels can't generate healthy blood flow. Either way, the result is the same: The amount of oxygen and nutrients flowing to the fetus is very low.

The condition is rare — Baschat said he estimates that between 0.5 and 0.8 percent of pregnancies are affected — but serious. "[The placenta] loses ability to work way before due date," Baschat told Live Science, and mothers often give birth early, between 24 and 32 weeks. Only about 40 to 50 percent of those babies survive. (Indeed, among the women in the trial who were in the control group — meaning they didn't get the drug — nine of the babies died.)
