SS Raid: Fight Against Corruption Or Mere Attack On Political Foes? By Ehi Ekhator [Must Read]
I might want to first thank my readers who kept in touch with me to comment on the recent happenings in Nigeria concerning the arrest of a few judges who were claimed to have taken bribes. I needed to take as much time as is needed to consider what to say before i am blamed again for taking a bribe from the opposition to compose the self-evident.

President Buhari administration has been adulated in a few quarters over his affirmed reality in battling corruption in the nation while others say he utilizes the DSS and other security divisions to scare his political adversaries.

The State Security Service (SSS), otherwise called the Department of State Services (DSS) employed a commando style in arresting two Supreme Court Justices, John Inyang Okoro and Sylvanus Ngwuta over petitions allegedly written against them by the people.

The DSS guaranteed that the result of its storm and search was the diverse hard currencies found in the homes of the judges which further buttressed an assertion of illegal pay-off against them.

“In one of the States where the Service operations were conducted, credible intelligence revealed that the Judge had Two Million United States Dollars ($2,000,000 USD) stashed in his house. When he was approached for due search to be conducted, he in concert with the State Governor, mobilized thugs against the Service team. The team restrained itself in the face of unbridled provocative activities by those brought in by the Governor. Unfortunately, the Judge and Governor also engaged the tacit support of a sister security agency.

The DSS was referring to the incident in Rivers State where Governor Nyesom Wike stepped in to prevent the SSS from arresting a judge in the middle of the night.

Justice Ngwuta had reportedly travelled to Qatar to receive bribes that he allegedly shared with Justice Okoro and other judges in order to help Wike win a case at the Supreme Court regarding his rerun election.

“Other foreign currencies were also recovered. This were recovered from just three (3) of the judges.

“These in addition to other banking documents, including real estate documents have been recovered. Meanwhile preparations are ongoing to arraign them in a competent court of jurisdiction in line with the laws of the nation.

“The Service would want to clearly state that it has never invited Justice Walter NKANU ONNOGHEN for investigation, neither is he being investigated by this Service. In addition the Service would like to put it on record, that it has tremendous respect for the Judiciary and would not do anything to undermine it or its activities. The Service will also join hands with this noble institution in its fight to rid it of few corrupt Judges whose actions is undermining not only the Judiciary but the common bond of our national life.”

Fighting corruption in Nigeria would have surely improved the lives of her citizens if the fight was genuine. The tactics employed by the current administration to stamp out corruption is a window display if you look beyond the daily headlines.

Now Why the sudden launch of assault on the judges?

I have perused numerous Nigerians communicated their backings for the arrest while some completely express concerns over the assault. Eminent Nigerians like the former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode and an Renown Senior Lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome have condemned the kidnap of the judges at their homes in the middle of the night.

As indicated by Fani-Kayode, DSS lied about the affirmed cash found in the premises of the judges. He cautioned Nigerians not to believe such, as the division is scarcely searching for a reason to legitimize its unlawful activity.

“It is in this context that one has to view the absurd claims by the DSS that massive sums of cash ranging from 2 million USD to hundreds of thousands of euros and pounds sterling were found in the homes of all the judges that were arrested in the early hours of saturday morning.

“If anyone honestly believes that such large sums of cash were found in the homes of ANY of those judges then that person needs to have his head examined.

President Muhammadu Buhari will take 10 days off and travel to London on Monday June 6th to rest. During the holiday, he will see an E.N.T. specialist for a persistent ear infection. Obiano Begins Construction Of Helipads In Hospitals Across The State

Report available to NEWSFLASHNGR indicates that The Willingly working governor of Anambra state,
Chief willie Obiano has begun the construction of helipads (helicopter parks) in major hospitals in the state.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr (Mrs) Uju Nwogu disclosed this at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka on Saturday during the inauguration of the ambassadors of Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, a non-government organization of the wife of the state governor, Ebelechukwu.

Nwogu said the helipads were to fasten movement in emergency cases, and save lives as appropriate.
She said the project had begun at the Onitsha General Hospital, and would be extended to other major hospitals in the state, before long.

Nwogu said in case of critical referrals, arrangements could be quickly made to flow a patient abroad without delay because the helicopter would take the patient direct from the state to the nearest International Airport.

The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) Anambra State Branch has said the Nigerian Military particularly, Commander 302 Artillery Regiment Onitsha, Col. Isa Adbdullahi is on an ethnic hate killing agenda against Ndigbo going by the litany of killings of unarmed pro Biafra groups by the army.

The CLO in press statement signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Aloysius Attah said that no fewer than 100 igbo people have been move down by soldiers in most gruesome manners while more than 300 are living with scars and wounds from gunshots since the agitation for the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu started.

“It is no more ordinary speculations but we can say it that the Nigerian military headed by the Hausa/Fulani and using the Commander , 302 Artillery Regiment , Col. Isah Abdullahi are on a mission for the extermination and annihilation of promising Igbo Youths.

“There is no other way to describe the brute savagery and unprovoked killings of our people but armed soldiers during any of the non violent protests and rallies so far embarked on by the pro Biafran groups.

“Most worrisome is the fact that the soldiers acting on the directives of their blood sucking superiors carelessly open fire on unarmed protesters, kill them at random and display their mutilated bodies as play things which they step their booths on as if they are carrying waste products for disposal.

“The Commander 302 Artillery , Col. Abdullahi after executing his evil mission often pass the buck to the police shutting himself out of public scrutiny or clarification while hiding under the shield of his superiors too in Abuja”

The CLO called for the prosecution of Col. Abdullahi at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity while demanding for the immediate release of the murdered Igbos still in the army custody.

The group also slammed Governor Obiano for his timid handling of the issues arising from the Biafran Day celebrations noting that the governor has also acquired the penchant of playing to the gallery when serious issues that has to do with the lives of his subjects arises simply on the reason that he wants to be in the good book of the man in Aso Rock.

Meanwhile, the leadership of Southeast Based Coalition of Human Rights Organizations (SBCHROs) have expressed worries that the Nigerian Security Forces and their political conspirators are dangerously pushing innocent and law abiding members of key Ethnic Nationalities in Nigeria to the wall; forcing them to learn the hard way of preserving their ethnic identities and human existence.

Oil magnate, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah has given indication to take over the seat of the incumbent governor of the state, Willie Obiano next year.

" I still want to be Anambra state governor," he said.

Ubah, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic, stated this while interacting with newsmen in his home town, Nnewi, Anambra state.

The oil magnate, who contested the governorship of the state on the platform of Labour Party in 2013, said his failure in the poll was a huge loss to the people of the state.

He described himself as a man with a great passion for his people.
He added that if given the opportunity, he would transform the entire state the way he had done to his businesses and community, Otolo, Nnewi.

He said his interest in politics was for the passion to "empower the youth through employments and entrepreneurial mentorship"

“Losing the Anambra state governorship contest was not easy but I think my people are the greater losers because I have great things in mind for them and I am still interested in that seat.

“I am highly passionate about Anambra and I want to see it transformed, I want the opportunity to develop Anambra just the way I have done in my village and evidence are that I have done more for my community than any government has done for Anambra,” he said.

Nigeria has lost over N38tn through mismanagement, embezzlement and money laundering under successive administrations since democracy returned in 1999; estimates have shown.

The figures were drawn from findings by anti-graft agencies and investigative panel reports on major economic scandals and financial crimes in the country in the last 17 years.

The investigation, which covered the Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan-led administrations, showed that most of the stolen funds have not been accounted for.

Of the over N39tn lost in the country’s economy, crude oil theft, official corruption and electoral campaign funding were responsible for a larger percentage of the loss.

The exchange rate of N130 to a dollar was used in the conversion of funds under the Obasanjo-led administration while N150 was adopted for those under the Jonathan-led administration, being the average official rates during the tenures.

The last one year of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has been traumatic and hurtful for millions of Nigerians.

This is according to the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, KOWA party, Ijaw National Congress, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, and Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among others.

The groups described Buhari’s first year in office as a disappointment for Nigerians who had expected so much from the President.

They said the economic conditions of Nigerians had gone worse rather than get better.
Already, investigation by Saturday PUNCH had revealed that the gloomy state of the economy had led to the astronomical rise in the prices of perishable and non-perishable goods even as citizens’ disposable income had drastically reduced due to the loss in the value of naira.

The situation, it was learnt, had exacerbated the country’s poverty and hunger levels.
The National President, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima, said many people considered one year as too short to judge the government, but it is “big in the life of a nation.”

Shettima said excuses by ministers that previous governments should be blamed for Nigeria’s woes were not tenable.

“Some people think it is just one year but to me, I don’t look so,” he said, adding, “If you look at the way we run this country; every government in place works for two years, by the third year, people in government begin to reposition themselves for elections.

“To be honest, Nigerians have faced the most difficult situation ever in the history of this country. No matter how the government tries to convince Nigerians otherwise, the citizens have suffered and are still suffering.

Nearly 4,000 Nigerians have been killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and Fulani herdsmen since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015, investigations have revealed.

Findings by our correspondents based on related killings as reported by the media show that at least 2, 569 persons were killed by the insurgents while more than 600 others were killed by the nomadic cattle rearers in the period under review.

It was also learnt that thousands of persons, including women and children, sustained various degrees of injuries from the attacks.

Available figures indicated that the number of persons killed by the suspected insurgents dramatically dropped after President Buhari’s four months in office.

In the last days of May 2015, following President Buhari’s inaugural speech, the deadly sect reportedly killed 97 persons and injured several others.

In June, July, August, September and October 2015, the sect reportedly killed 368, 635, 431, 267, and 279 persons, respectively.

But starting from November 2015, the number of persons reportedly killed by the sect dipped with November 2015 recording 81 deaths; December, 136; January 2016, 104; February 2016, 90; March 2016, 26; April 2016, 43; and May 2016, 12.

In 2015, Nigeria ranked third in the 2015 Global Terrorism Index, trailing Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to the index, on June 4, 2015, a female suicide bomber in Maiduguri killed two people near a military checkpoint. On the same day, 45 people were also killed in a Yola market, Adamawa State when a blast ripped through the place.

On July 1, 2015, suicide bombers attacked a hospital in Kukawa, Borno State when Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo visited the state, killing 118 people.

Also on July 17, 2015, 50 persons were killed when suicide bombers attacked a Muslim prayer ground in Damaturu, Yobe State.

One of the worst Boko Haram attacks in the last one year include an attack on Dalori village, some four kilometres from Maiduguri, Borno State on January 30, 2015, where at least 86 people were reportedly killed after an invasion by the insurgents.

On February 9, 2016, 60 people were reportedly killed while 78 others were wounded when two female suicide bombers suspected to be Boko Haram members, sneaked into a camp for internally displaced persons in Dikwa, Borno State.

However, the situation did not apply to the casualty figures associated with Fulani herdsmen attacks.
June 2015 recorded 97 deaths arising from suspected Fulani herdsmen attacks; September recorded three; October, 18; November, 22; December, 28; February 2016, 300; April 2016, 55; and May 2016, two.

Last December, no fewer than 22 persons were reportedly killed when suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked Kwata in Jos South Local government area of Plateau State.

In February 2016, suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked a village in Agatu, Benue State, reportedly killing at least 300 persons. The attack has been described as one of the worst ever witnessed in the series of attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

In April, 2016, at least 40 persons were also reportedly killed when suspected herdsmen attacked Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

“The Igbo residents of Magbo, Obada Zone 5 Community of Fortune Estate in Agbara, Lagos has cried out and sent a save our soul [SOS] message to the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase in a matter of urgency to set up a panel of inquiry into the recent Brutalization of a Member of their community, Mr. Chukwuka Paul by the Men of the Nigeria Police force Area K.

They pounced on Mr. Paul and his wife, beating them to Coma and went further to take him into custody for about 72 hour without concrete Evidence against the gentleman and his family.

It was gathered that on Thursday 19th May 2016, about 8 heavily armed men storm the residence of Paul Chukwuka where he also has his house finishing material store, ordered him to enter their vehicle. While he was trying to know why such arrest is for him, they pounce on him as if they had an Order to brutalized him, he was handcuffed beaten and while his wife Ebele Paul and their little child were shouting for help from the Neighbors, his wife too was beaten and stripped in the presence of sympathizers.

He was taking to Area K command where he was detained for over 72 hours, beaten severally with different wound scattered all over his body, he was later released on bail. The minister described the Kano town hall meeting as unique because the medium of communication is an indigenous language. He said the idea of the town hall meetings was to communicate directly with the people and also feel their pulse on government policies and programmes.

Nigerian Economy Collapsed Under Buhari – Having worked twice at the Nigerian Presidential villa and once at the British Parliament, if there is anything I have learnt, it is that it is impossible to over inform a leader.

You can under inform him, but no matter how much information you give a leader, you cannot give him too much information.

In today’s world, strength and weakness are gauged differently than they were, say in 1984. In the millennial age in which we live in, information is power and lack of information is weakness.

My concern is that there are a lot of weaknesses in Nigeria’s seat of power because not enough information is being given to President Muhammadu Buhari.

I, like other Nigerians, have heard or read reports of ministers in President Buhari’s cabinet being afraid to challenge him or disagree with him. Perhaps unawares, the minister of state for petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, corroborated these reports in a recorded YouTube video now circulating where he revealed that the President ignores his ministers when they bring up issues that he does not want to discuss.

Having such anodyne personalities around you just means that you are living in a bubble, seeing things as you want them to be and not as they are.
