Former Super Eagles defender, Yisa Sofoluwe, has blamed the three defenders who were on duty during the last Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Tunisia for allowing the visitors to run away with a point when the chips were down in Abuja.

The ex-player, popularly called Defence Minister said he was disappointed the way Taiye Taiwo, Joseph Yobo and Dele Adeleye played throughout the keenly contested duel.

He said the players were not totally committed to the task of qualifying Nigeria to the South Africa 2010 mundial. According to him, the defenders played as if nothing was at stake.

Sofoluwe said as a retired player, he could still play better than the three defenders who allowed Tunisians to level up immediately Nigeria were at the advatange of winning the match.
"It’s unfortunate we are still struggling to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. The players messed up Nigeria’s chances of scalling over Tunisia’s hurdles. A victory would have changed everything but it’s a pity we didn’t learn from our mistakes. For the fact that we knew how the Tunisians play, still, we played into their hands. With the way things are going, I don’t think we can make it in that group. It would take miracle to see Nigeria qualifying, but like they always say, nothing is impossible with God but we also need to do out home work properly. We need to play the remaining matches with Mozambique and Kenya,” he said.

He said Taiye Taiwo contributed to Nigeria’s poor showing against Tunisia by going upfront without telling other players to block his position. He said the two equalising goals were scored from the Olympique Marseille’s player angle.

Tunisians coach instructed his boys to make use of Taiwo’s position because they have watched him moving to the front and he’s not always fast enough to cover up his lapses, and the Tunsians had enough pace to move ahead of him. It’s sad we had no plan to beat Tunisia,” he said.

EducationFg Approves Unified Platform For Jamb, Neco by okeey(op): 9:25am On Sep 11, 2009
FG approves unified platform for JAMB, NECO
Clement Idoko, Abuja

THE Federal Government has approved a new unified platform for payment and registration for public examinations conducted by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), National Examination Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB).

The new converged portal developed by the consortium, Converged Examination Management Technology Platform (CEMTP), when fully deployed would save Nigerians over N3.2 billion annually of technology money spent by candidates on payment for online registration, checking and printing of results among others of the examinations conducted by the three examination bodies.

President and Chief Executive of the SW Global Ltd., Dr. Aloy Chife, while briefing newsmen in Abuja, said candidates applying for any or all of the examinations conducted by these bodies would need to obtain only a single multi-purpose scratch card at the cost of N850 and would be valid for a year in processing all the examination processes.

The project, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), was contracted to the CEMPT consortium on 12th February, 2009 and is expected to take off fully next year.

Already CEMPT has commenced to test-run the project with the ongoing registration for November/December NECO examination and expressed satisfaction with the seamless registration processes by the candidates.

He disclosed that the new system, which is in line with the new Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) to be introduced with effect from next year by JAMB, would not only increase the credibility of examinations conducted by these bodies but help curtail the incidence of examination malpractices.

Besides, Dr. Chife, said: “In addition to its other benefits such as; cutting down the amount paid by the Nigerian child by millions of Naira, it also provides critical technology such as Biometric and Item Banking for management of examinations.

He explained that previously every candidate spent as much as N5,100 as technology cost involving purchasing of scratch card for registration, checking and printing of results among others, adding that with the use of the multipurpose scratch card all these processes could be performed with a single scratch card.

Chife further stated that the project, which is part of the Federal Government’s Private-Public sector Partnership initiative, expressed commitment of the team to the success of the project aimed at reducing the hassle and burden on candidates sitting for public examinations in Nigeria.

He, however, said the West African Examination Council (WAEC) was excluded from the project because it is a regional examination body that is not controlled by the Nigerian government.

2010 World Cup: Amodu blasts Kanu, Ik Uche , says it’s not over yet - Apologises to Nigerians - Blames players’ poor attitude
By Olawale Olaniyan - 11.09.2009

A Nigerian fan demonstrates
patriotism during the Super
Eagles clash with Tunisia
in Abuja.EMBATTLED Super Eagles coach, Shaibu Amodu has hit out at Portsmouth striker, Kanu Nwankwo for failing to impose his presence as a leader of the team, during the 2010 World Cup qualifier against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia at the National stadium, Abuja last Sunday which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Speaking on brilafm, the former coach of BCC Lions stated that Kanu given his position in the team had a share of the blame.

“Kanu should have taken the responsibility and ensured that the game was okay but in football, you don’t apportion too much blames to the players," Amodu said disgustedly after the match which has him criticisms from the sporting press.

The Edo State-born tactician also expressed displeasure with the performance of Ikechukwu Uche in the game against Tunisia saying, the Getafe of Spain lad with four goals in the kitty failed to prove himself as a striker.

“In fact, our players disappointed us because it cannot be because Kanu did not come in in time, that is why we were so careless with the way we played and the way we conceded two goals,” said the former trainer of Orlando Pirates of South Africa.

HOWEVER, Nigeria Head Coach, Shaibu Amodu on Thursday apologised to Nigerians for Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles in a crucial 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Abuja and promised that the hope of qualifying for the Mundial is not over yet for the country.

“I want to use this opportunity to apologise to Nigerians as a whole, on behalf of myself, other members of the technical crew and the players. It was one match we expected to win to move to the top of the table, but through carelessness and poor attitude, we could not win.

“It was a bad result, no doubt. It was not the result that our teeming fans had expected, and it was certainly not the result that our leaders who had done everything to encourage us expected. We are saddened by what happened.

“At the end of the day, I will still blame poor attitude by the players. We did not show enough professionalism and experience in keeping advantage. That is very rather strange at this level of the game.”

We didn't play like W/Cup-bound team - IK Uche
- 10.09.2009

Ikechukwu UcheNIGERIAN international striker, Ikechukwu Uche, appears to have surrendered the 2010 World Cup ticket to Tunisia after the North Africans held the Super Eagles to a 2-2 draw last Sunday in Abuja.

Uche, who is Nigeria's leading scorer in the qualifiers with four goals thus far, admitted that the Eagles were not at their element on Sunday.

"How can we play like we did (on Sunday) and win? We did not play as a team desirous of being at the World Cup and the Tunisians punished us for it by getting a draw that may well give them the sole ticket of the group to South Africa 2010," the Real Zaragoza striker told Soccer Star newspaper.

Following the draw in Abuja, Tunisia remains on top of Group Two with eight points from four matches, two points clear of Nigeria.

"With what we showed in the match, I don't think we can go to the World Cup again. Our last hope is to pray for the Tunisians to lose any of their remaining matches," said Uche, who admitted he was completely marked out by the Tunisians on Sunday.

"We had a very bad day and that may have cost us the ticket. It is no longer in our hands to decide our World Cup fate."

Nigeria hosts Mozambique in October and travels away to Kenya the following month, while Tunisia welcomes Kenya to the November 7 Stadium in Rades next month and plays away to Mozambique in November.

Fashola’s move to connect Lagos motorists to driving school

Kunle Awosiyan, Lagos Updated: Tuesday 07.09.2009

IF the Lagos State government can adequately implement its policies in the transportation sector, Lagos

residents, motorists and commuters, will soon begin to breathe an air of peace.

Unarguably, the introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit, LAGBUS, and Executive Cabs into the state transportation system has not only increased the revenue base of the government, it has brought solace to the teeming population of commuters in the metropolis.

Even with stiff regulations, the transpost sector is still faced with so many challenges, principally in the area of human development, which encompasses the drivers and car owners; most drivers and car owners lack the necessary skills and education to ply Lagos roads.

Many of them cannot understand the road signs and codes. They drink while driving. As a matter of fact, most commercial drivers smoke marijuana and drink alcohol. This anomaly perhaps has led to the death of many innocent souls. It is a major source of worry for the government.

However, in its bid to redress the anomaly, the state government is focusing its attention on improving drivers’ knowledge across the state through the establishment of a drivers’ institute.

Interestingly, the idea, which was initiated by the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Bola Tinubu, was unfolded last Tuesday. The state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), inaugurated the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute in Ikeja and Ikorodu. He also launched specialised equipment to usher in modern transportation system in the metropolis.

While analysing the need for a drivers’ institute in the state despite the office of Vehicle Inspection and Lagos State Transport Management Authority, the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Mr. Ayodeji Oyedokun, said the rate of accidents had not gone down despite the various traffic officers.

And this may be as a result of the failure to train professional drivers and private car owners in the metropolis.

“Though VIO is gradually chasing away rickety vehicles from Lagos roads, wobbly drivers are increasing in number, making it so difficult for the government to reduce accidents on the highways,” he said.

According to Oyedokun, there are three major factors responsible for accidents on the highway; human beings, mechanical faults and the state of the roads.

Oyedokun noted that it had been observed that 85 per cent of motoring accidents is caused by the drivers who lack the simple knowledge of highway codes and signs.

He told the Nigerian Tribune that the institute had conducted a research, which revealed that most Lagos commercial drivers had eye problems, perhaps due to the smoking of Indian hemp, cigarette and drinking of alcohol.

“They do not care to correct these anomalies but go ahead driving on the highway because they possess all the necessary documents a professional driver must have,” he said.

The institute, besides the theoretical lessons it will provide for the drivers, will expose them to various codes and signs in an audio-visual room. There is also the optometric unit, where driver’s eyes are examined. The optometric unit is manned by a consultant, Dr. Bruce Ignetius.

Another room is the bio-metric centre, where the driver’s bio-data is taken for record purposes. Electronic finger printing is also done in this room.

There is also the simulator unit for the training and analysis of the driver’s skills. This is the room where driver’s responses to external stimuli are tested. It is also where the driving techniques of all categories of drivers are conducted.

Here, drivers are tested on how good they could be in the rain, night or cloudy weather. The room also consists of projectors to show films of accident scenes and various ways they could be averted.

According to Oyedokun, the law guiding the creation of the institute makes it mandatory for every professional driver in Lagos to undergo a two-day course with certification.

“This will serve as a great opportunity for truck drivers who lack the necessary expertise to drive on the highway. There are many truck drivers in Lagos who do not know the road signs, we will teach them here,” he said.

He explained that the institute had already developed a curriculum, which the governor would soon approve for the school.

“Once in a year, we will issue certificate of competence, which every driver must have in their possession at all times to know who has passed through the institute. LASTMA officials can also recommend any erring driver to the institute if he has not passed through the course,” he said.

Varsity strike: Female students accuse FG of insensitivity - Plan protest

Clement Idoko, Abuja - updated: Thursday 03-09-2009

Hajia Aishat Jibrin Dukku,
Minister of State, Education
NIGERIAN female students in universities, under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Female Students (NANFS), have accused the federal government of insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian students as displayed in the willful pull out of negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The female students’ body has consequently given the federal government one month within which to resolve the issues with the ASUU or have all the Nigerian female students in the country take over the streets of Abuja in a mass protest.

National President of the Association, Miss Ifeoma Ofo, a Medical Laboratory Technology student from the Ebonyi State University at a news briefing in Abuja, said the federal government should demonstrate that it believed in educating the Nigerian youth by returning to the negotiation table with ASUU as the only way to resolve the crisis.

She said the government should not continue to play the ostrich with the matter, pointing out that the demands of the ASUU were genuine, “Because we study in the universities without light, water, students perch around on windows to receive lectures, our libraries are glorified ones and there is a general decay in the system”.

Ofo added that consultations were already on by the association with its parent body, the National Association of Nigerian Students, to embark on a full scale mass protest since the government, which naturally should be the one to create industrial harmony, mischievously pulled out of negotiation with ASUU leaders, an indication that it did not have the interest of the Nigerian youth at heart.

She stated that by abandoning the negotiation one week after reopening it with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the federal government had already joined the strike, thereby plunging the system deeper into crisis.

While condemning the government’s withdrawal from the negotiation, she said it was too cheap a blackmail to threaten the lecturers to call off the strike without a reasonable progress on how to resolve outstanding issues.

She said: “It is cheap blackmail to insist that unless the union returns to work it would not resume the negotiation. By abandoning negotiation, government has now joined the strike. The point is that negotiation can be conducted whether or not there is an ongoing strike”.

Ofo, who led other delegation of female students from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU), Benue State University, Makurdi, University of Lagos, University of Abuja, University of Maiduguri and Enugu State Universities, said the female students were more vulnerable to the impact of the prolonged strike as some of them had already gone into prostitution, adding that there were serious negative consequences on students’ performance when they were out of academic environment for long time.

She said: “ASUU gave several warning strikes before the real strike. If the government were serious, it ought to have nipped the crisis in the bud. This is why we must condemn all those ‘no victor, no vanquished’ people who appeal to ASUU and government to see reason. They are wrong. It is the government that should see reason, not ASUU.

“The government had no right to terminate that negotiation. We have heard from both sides, and we realised that government should be responsible enough to honour this agreement, which is good for the university system. Enough is enough. We call on government to accept ASUU’s conditions so we can go back to classroom”, she stated.

Flood has rendered 100,000 Nigerians homeless this year - NEMA

07.09.2009

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that more Nigerians are displaced by flood due to torrential rainfalls and blockages of waterways in various communities at rural and urban areas of the country.

The flooding this year, from reports so far received from the six zonal coordinators in each geopolitical zone, has affected at least 100,000 people who were either displaced or have their means of livelihood destroyed.

Some villages have been submerged while corpses were exhumed from graves.

Recently, the Director General of NEMA, Mohammed Audu-Bida, directed all the zonal officers and their staff to move to affected areas to provide necessary relief materials to the victims.

Most of the relief materials are in trucks of food items, building materials, clothing and medications.

The Director General said since July, the agency had continued to alert states and relevant agencies to impending flood for adequate preparation to tackle its effect on the people.

He said the increase in the amount of rainfall was not peculiar to any particular part of the country due to variations in the weather pattern of the country caused by climate change.
