Corruption: Nigeria In Danger - Ribadu Idowu Samuel, Abuja - 19.09.2009 Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has expressed worries over the wave of corruption in the country. He also recounted the pains he had taken in combating the menace as the head of the anti-graft agency. Ribadu stated this in an interview he granted to an internet-based magazine before his controversial visit to Nigeria, the text of which was made available to Saturday Tribune. He stressed the EFCC under his control managed to contain the menace of corruption in the country to a considerable limit. Ribadu expressed regrets that fight against corruption in Nigeria had reduced, a reason he said former public officers who the EFCC rated as corrupt were still in government circles today. He said by the time he assumed office as the head of EFCC, corruption had almost made Nigeria a failed state, given the rate at which Nigerians were turning to corrupt acts for survival. According to him, corruption was responsible for the high rate of death in the country. He said as the EFCC chairman, he started the fight against corruption by declaring war on advanced fee fraud kingpins who, he said, had extended their operations beyond the shores of the country. http://www.tribune.com.ng/19092009/news/news1.html |

Three Killed, 60 Injured As Police, El-zakzaky Clash Hassan Ibrahim, Kaduna - 19.09.2009 It was a bloody Friday in Zaria, Kaduna State, as a clash between the police and the Sheikh Zakzaky-led Muslim Brotherhood of Nigeria (Shiite) led to the death of three while over 60 people were injured. Just last week, the group alleged that the police were planning an onslaught against them just like what happened to the Darul Islam in Niger State. According to eyewitnesses, tension started shortly after a peaceful demonstration by the Shiite members in support of the people of Palestine. “Members of the Shiite sect in Kaduna had earlier staged a peaceful demonstration in the state capital in solidarity with the people of Palestine. The two incidents, however, heightened tension in the state, resulting in the state government beefing up security by deploying military and police personnel under its anti-crime outfit, Operation Yaki, throughout the state, particularly in Zaria and Kaduna cities. “The clash in Zaria between the Shiite and security agents broke out during a procession by the members of the Muslim sect in the town. The dead and injured people were allegedly caught in a cross-fire during the exchange of gunshots between the security agents and some alleged members of the Shiite sect. “With the arrival of some armed policemen and soldiers, gunshots rent the atmosphere, resulting in a stampede and people scampering for safety in Kofar Doka and Tundun Wada areas of the city. “The police got an intelligence report of an impending attack on them by the Shiite sect and then mobilised to secure the lives and property of the people of the area,” one of the witnesses said. www.nigeriatribune.com |
Militants Brought To P/Harcourt In Presidential Jet Bolaji Ogundele,Port Harcourt with Agency Report - 19.09.2009 SURPRISE was on the face of many people at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Friday when one of the militant leaders was brought into the airport in a presidential jet. The militant leader, popularly called Young Shall Grow, arrived the airport some minutes before another presidential jet brought the Defence Minister, General Gowin Abbe (rtd.) to the airport. The Rivers State governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was said to have been surprised on getting to the airport when he saw two presidential jets and he was told by security officials at the airport that one of the planes actually brought the militant leader and his ‘boys.’ Meanwhile, as the October 4 deadline given to repentant militants to embrace amnesty draws near, Abbe has said that the Federal Government might not extend the deadline. Fielding questions from newsmen at the Port Harcourt Airforce Base on his arrival, the minister said the Federal Government was not going to wait for all the militants before moving ahead, adding that the amnesty programme had entered the next stage of rehabilitation and re-integration. General Abbe urged the militants who are yet to lay down their arms to do so and embrace the amnesty programme. http://www.tribune.com.ng/19092009/news/news13.html |
ASUP Boss Faints During Meeting - After Receiving Fake Call Over Wife’s Death By Adebayo Waheed - 19.09.2009 THE chairman of the striking lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Ibadan, Oyo State, Comrade Babatunde Dosunmu, slumped and fainted, on Friday, while addressing the congress on the latest development of the strike which they embarked upon on July 8. Dosunmu was trying to persuade the lecturers to be more resolute and get their hearts together and take a firm stance on the threat by the state government that it would sack them if they failed to resume duty. The union leader had received a phone call which reportedly informed him that his wife had died at home. On the receipt of the call, he shouted and fainted. It took a long time before his colleagues could revive him. As a result, the congress was temporarily suspended before another member of the union stood in for the chairman where they passed a resolution that they would not sign any document and wait for the worse. He was quickly driven away by members of the union to get medical attention. As he was being driven away, the striking lecturers kept on warning him not to go to the institution’s health centre. About 20 minutes later, he re-appeared and it was gathered that the information he received on the phone was fake and that it was intended to distract him. Meanwhile, the lecturers have agreed to sign the register opened by the management of the institution but insisted that the strike would continue until the state government met their demands. http://www.tribune.com.ng/19092009/news/news14.html |
Strike: OOU Lecturers Protest Olayinka Olukoya, Abeokuta - 19.09.2009 Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye , on Friday, joined their colleagues all over the country to protest failure of the Federal Government on the non-implementation of agreements reached with the union. The lecturers, in their hundreds, marched from the mini-campus of the institution to the palace of the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Abdulrazaq Adenugba, carrying placards with various inscriptions and singing solidarity songs. It will be recalled that the on-going strike was embarked upon about two and a half months ago by ASUU due to Federal Government’s failure to implement an earlier agreement reached with the union. The OOU lecturers urged the monarchs in Ijebuland to prevail on President Umaru Yar’ Adua to implement the agreement the Federal Government reached with ASUU. The protest that lasted for several hours was led by the Chairman of ASSU, OOU Chapter, Dr. Adesola Nassir. The lecturers accused the Federal Government of being insensitive to the university lecturers’ demands. According to Nassir, “the insensitivity on the part of the Federal Government is killing university education in Nigeria. Virtually all educational sectors in the country have been paralysed. “The union is not happy that the students are idle when they should be studying. The development is unfortunate and disheartening. We implore Nigerians to support our struggle in ensuring that our demands are met by the authorities concerned,” he stated. He contended that the seven-point agenda of the Yar’ Adua government, if not married with stable and quality education, would amount to deceit and exercise in futility. http://www.tribune.com.ng/19092009/news/news7.html |
Kogi Govt Bows To Teachers Johnson Babajide, Lokoja - 19.09.2009 Kogi state government has finally bowed to pressure over the disengagement of teachers with Grade II certificate from public service. The action of the government followed the protest and the refusal of the teachers to resume academic session slated for last Monday. The state Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Chief Sylvester Onoja, had sacked all the Grade II teachers in the state primary schools in line with the national policy which specifies National Certificate in Education (NCE) as minimum qualification for teachers in all primary schools in the country. Onoja, who spoke to Saturday Tribune on phone, said that it had reversed its earlier decision and given the holders of Grade II teachers in the state primary schools till next year October for implementation. http://www.tribune.com.ng/19092009/news/news8.html |

The view was given by the ASUU Chairman, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi chapter, Dr Ibrahim Haruna, in a symposium on Thursday. 2 ministers escape kidnappers’ attempt - Egwu would have been killed, ransom or no ransom - SSS Friday Ekeoba, Odidison Omankhanlen and Lanre Oyetade, Lagos - 18.09.2009 THE impasse between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government, on Thursday, took a new dimension when the State Security Service (SSS) paraded four suspects in Abuja, for allegedly planning to kidnap the Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu, and his Labour and Productivity counterpart, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN), for ransom. The Assistant Director, Public Relations of the SSS, Mrs. Marilyn Ogar, told newsmen that the suspects plotted to kidnap the duo with intent to make fast money out of the crisis. The suspects are: 58-year old Abdallah Alfa alias Ambassador, and three students of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja); Kingsley Njoku Obi, Aniabor Ochuko, alias Kelly Handsome; and Chilaka Rowland, alias Peace. It was gathered that after the kidnap, the suspects were to have demanded a ransom of N300 million from the Federal Government. They were also to have asked the Federal Government to sign the contentious agreement with the ASUU, and a reduction in rank of the two ministers. Ogar further revealed that the leader of the gang, Alfa, was said to have planned to release Kayode and kill Egwu after the ransom would have been paid. According to the SSS, the suspects, who were arrested on September 12, 2009, would be handed over to the police for prosecution after investigations were concluded. It was also learnt that the chief suspect, Alfa, had been claiming that he was the Nigerian Ambassador to Spain. Ogar said: “The Service has arrested the following suspects who planned, though unsuccessful, the kidnap of the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu and that of Labour and Productivity, Adetokunbo Kayode. “While three of them are students of the University of Abuja, preliminary investigations showed that the plan was designed to serve as a forceful way of ending the ongoing strike. “The suspects have owned up to their plot and strategies to achieve their objective before they were nabbed by the Service. The Minister of Education was to be forced to sign an alleged agreement with ASUU. They further planned to demand a ransom of N300 million from the Federal Government as a condition for releasing the ministers, should they have been kidnapped. “However, part of the plot was to equally kill Egwu, the Minister of Education and release Kayode after the ransom would have been paid. “The choice of using students for the operation was ostensibly to make the exercise and the subsequent demand appear as if geared towards the Federal Government and ASUU impasse.” The SSS spokesperson added that investigations by the agency revealed that Alfa, the leader of the group “is an incurable fraudster given his antecedents. He has been associated with previous attempts to obtain money under false pretences. “While he hails from Dekina, Kogi State, he claims to be Hausa from Kano. The plan to kidnap the ministers was discussed in his house in Abuja. He not only promised to sponsor the attempt, he initiated it. He recruited others and promised them the sum of N14 million with an initial payment of N4 million.” Giving a brief on the three UniAbuja students, Ogar said: “Obi who is 23 years old is a 400 level student of Political Science at the University of Abuja. He resides in Abuja. He was part of the original plot to kidnap the ministers. “Ochuko is 27 years old and hails from Oha Town, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. He is a diploma student of the University of Abuja and claimed to be studying Computer Science. He came all the way from Warri, where he has been resident since the ASUU strike, for the kidnap job. “Roland owned up to his membership of the Confraternity. He hails from Umuezube Umuokrika, Ahiabo Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. A 28-year-old final year student of Political Science at the University of Abuja, he invited Ochuko into the plot, for which they were to be paid N14 million.” The four suspects confessed to the plot when answering questions from newsmen. The students specifically said it was Alfa, who recruited them to carry out the kidnap of the two ministers, adding that they were to be given N4 millon for logistics and the balance of N10 million after the plot was successfully carried out. But Alfa denied the allegation of planning and recruiting the students for the kidnap, saying it was the students who brought a proposal on how to kidnap the ministers to him and asked him to finance it. Although, the SSS were not forthcoming on how they uncovered the plot, Nigerian Tribune gathered that one of the students, who was scared, confided in somebody who later blew the lid on their nefarious plans. The source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The boys were scared and had to confide in somebody, but our anger is why didn’t they come forward and report to us: It took us time getting them.” Besides, the SSS lamented that “Alfa, a 58-year-old father, who is supposed to serve as a role model to the younger ones, cajoled them into carrying out the nefarious act, thus capitalising on their seeming frustrations and desperation to go back to school all means. Ogar added: “This Service will definitely not watch and see undesirable elements take laws into their own hands. The Federal Government is, no doubt, making good efforts to ensure the safety of all law abiding citizens in the country. All stakeholders are invited to partner with the Federal Government in this regard.” When the Nigerian Tribune sought the reaction of the minister of education through his special assistant on the development, he confirmed that the minister had been briefed of the attempted kidnap on him and his labour colleague. He said: “Of course, he was surprised on hearing the information, but observed that such has become the case in Nigeria now, that even when one occupied a strategic position in this country, one is not even spared of these kidnap cases. “It must be the hatch work of some disgruntled elements in the system who don’t want the progress of the nation,” www.nigeriatribune.com |
