Politics8 Days To Death: Otegbeye Lamented Over Nigeria by okeey(op): 8:45am On Oct 12, 2009
Exactly eight days before his death, prominent nationalist, Dr. Tunji Otegbeye, said one of the reasons he was seriously ill was that Nigeria remained unsuccessful after 49 years of nationhood.

The late Otegbeye said this in an interview granted Nigerian Tribune in his Ilaro, Ogun State home, a day after the last independence anniversary of Nigeria.

In an emotion-ladened voice, the late Otegbeye, who had one of his sons close to him, reminisced on his struggles and those of his contemporaries to free Nigeria of neo-colonialism, concluding that it was sad to see the country on the spot it was at 49.

He said the demonstrations he and his colleagues held against certain decisions of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa-led government in Nigeria ensured some measure of sanity, but regretted that things had not got better, citing the post-independence Anglo-Nigerian Defence Pact demonstration, as one of such activities.

“One of the reasons I am sick now is that I am unhappy about the socio-economic development in Nigeria that Nigeria, after 49 years, is still a toddler,” he said.

The late politician said it was disheartening that most of Nigeria’s contem-poraries had made appreciable progress and now the ones dictating the direction of Nigeria’s economy.

“I had some visitors from Singapore recently. They came to set up investments in Nigeria. “About 1962, I went through India, Hong Kong, China and Moscow. You can imagine 1962 to now. Hong Kong, then, was not so big; it was not so important and not so developed. I would say it was not more developed than Nigeria then. I stayed in China. China was not such a big affair. These countries are now bringing development to us. I was unwanted here, but, though I couldn’t meet with the president, I was received by China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. China is an economic power now.”

PoliticsPresident Yar’adua Starts Post-amnesty Process by okeey(op): 11:52am On Oct 10, 2009
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has said that the post-amnesty period would require great patience, perseverance and hard work.

President Yar’Adua was speaking to leaders of the former militants from the Niger Delta, during a meeting at State House, convened to discuss post-amnesty issues. Also in attendance were Governors of the South-South zone, Ministers of Defence, the Niger Delta ministry, Finance, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the National Security Adviser, the Special Adviser on Petroleum and heads of intervention agencies of government – NAPEP, NDDC, NDE, SMEDAN, MDG, and PTDF.

He said the “great achievement of the laying down of arms and renunciation of militancy must be supported to ensure peace, security and development in the Niger Delta region”, adding that, this will require “great patience, perseverance and hard work from all of us”.

President Yar’Adua appealed to all concerned in the process to show ‘sincerity of purpose and patience, because development takes time and huge resources’ and not to lose sight of the goal.

HealthNeuro-psychiatric Hospital Admitted 2,000 Patients In 9 Months by okeey(op): 9:49am On Oct 09, 2009
The Provost/Chief Medical Director, Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Dr. Adegboyega Ogunlesi, on Thursday, said that the hospital in the last nine months had recorded 2,000 fresh cases for various mental illnesses.

Ogunlesi advocated decentralisation of psychiatric health facilities in the country that would involve people at the grassroots. He said this in Abeokuta, at a press conference to mark the 2009 World Mental-Health Day campaign, that the hospital might likely record about 3,000 patients before the end of the year.

The provost contended that mental health treatment needed to be built into the nation’s primary health care system since the majority of the nation’s population resided in the rural areas where there was no access to medical facilities.

He said: “This is one of the challenges of the modern day psychiatric system; that’s the delivery of mental health services at the grassroots. The centralisation of psychiatric treatment further compounds the stigmatisation of the patients, as people will know everyone that seeks treatment in the federal establishments. So, we don’t want more of the central hospitals.”
