By Oluwafemi Popoola

The Nigerian political space was agog with curiosity and bewilderment following a news report from THISDAY of October 24, 2021 under the headline, “Snubbed by Tinubu in London, Osinbajo Ready for Presidential Fight of His Life.”

Without exaggerating, it was one of the most defining and confusing reports as the story gained traction and caused a burning sensation in the media space. Many talks of Osinbajo, Tinubu’s rift became a trending topic on various social media channels as everyone began to have a bite from the story. To talk about the story is to delve into chaos of narratives, thanks to the agenda setting role of the media, which over the years, has had huge influence on people’s perception on issues and political matters.

The story had insinuated a fictitious clash of interest between the Vice PresidentOsinbajo and the former Lagos State governor and national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Nigerian media, afterwards, latched on to the narrative and projections that Osinbajo may part ways with his political mentor over their alleged 2023 presidential ambitions, and it became a hot topic for political debates and discussions.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu embraced as both leaders met in Abuja, on Friday, October 29, 2021
Although, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, one of the aides of the Vice President, had dismissed such claims with a statement, but it did little to change people’s perspective as talks of rift and disagreement between the two politicians continued to persist on social media.

It is in the midst of all these speculations and conjectures that the two notable personalities in the ruling APC finally had a show down on Friday, October 29, 2021 in a closed-door meeting in Abuja, putting an end to the alleged conflict of interests in their 2023 presidential bid.

Both of them posed for photographs before heading into a closed-door session in what looked like both the political godfather and son were playing politics with the psyche of the poeple. The media charade on the alleged crack between them is more of an illusion than reality. Tinubu has earned a reputation of a master strategist and it seems the Vice President too has grown exponentially in the Nigeria’s political landscape. Eight solid years as a former Attorney General of Lagos State under Tinubu, popularly known as “Jagaban” and six years as the Nigeria’s Vice President is no small feat. The meeting was an affirmation, both are still bound together by a strong sense of collegiality but remained unperturbed during the razzmatazz playing out in the media.

It may be true that Tinubu, for some time, has been eyeing the 2023 presidency which many people believe he deserves and has paid his dues, although he has not publicly declared his interest to run for the highest office and now that there is an increased pressure from every corner of the country rooting for the Vice President to throw his hat into the ring, coupled with the fact that Osinbajo is increasingly appearing to be the best option for 2023 due to his unassailable credentials. Still, the Vice President has at different intervals dismissed any talk of 2023 presidency maintaining he is focused on helping Nigeria overcome its many challenges.

If Osinbajo decides to run, he would have to do so receiving blessings from his political benefactor and mentor. Like him, or loathe him, what you cannot take away from Tinubu is his leadership skills. He is a great leader who, has over the years, made great sacrifice to promote stability and democracy in Nigeria. He has invested a lot in building a generation of leaders and Osinbajo is one of his nurtured talents into national leadership position.

No matter the way we spin it, Tinubu will make the right choice by paving the way for national interest and mood. He has done it before and this won’t be the last. In case you are in doubt of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reputation and sacrifice for the party, let me leave you with some of his words he made at his 7th annual colloquium, held at Eko hotel in Lagos.

“They said I connived and conspired my way into the VP seat. They lied so easily that it was the price I extracted from General Buhari to support his bid. If not, I would destroy the party on the altar of my ambitions.

“They were wrong. I pulled myself out of contention. The very brilliant and capable Professor Yemi Osinbajo became our VP candidate. A man of integrity and impeccable character. Alas, this sent Jonathan’s henchmen into disarray. In the quiet of their private closet, even they could see clearly enough through the darkness of their own hearts to recognize that our ticket was so much better than theirs.”

Tinubu said his ambition won’t override the national interest as he gave up his vice-presidential ambition then voluntarily, for the sake of the party. For the Jagaban that we know, if he did it then, whatever will affect the strength in the unification of the ruling APC, and most especially Nigeria, if it is hinged on the ambition of this uncompromising democrat that we know, he will give it up. As it is evident now, Tinubu and Osinbajo are one.

we bind all forces of evil, of hate, fear, of division and of injustice; and we loose the peace of God. We release prosperity, love and justice in this land in Jesus name,’’ Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo prayed as the country flounders under him and his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the prayer on Thursday in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, leading other clergymen to pray against forces of evil, hate, division, injustice, insurgency and other issues working against the country.

Mr Osinbajo offered the prayer while delivering a goodwill message at the 30th Anniversary Celebrations and 17th International Prophecy and Prayer Conference of ThroneRoom (Trust) Ministry, Kafanchan.

He also prayed to God to forgive the sins of Nigerians, especially that of disobedience, and answer their prayers.

“Oh God, heal this land, deliver this land from terrorism and insurgency, from the hand of the wicked, prosper this land, save your people o God. Fulfil your promises of peace and prosperity,’’ prayed Mr Osinbajo.

The vice president, who made biblical references to the promises of God, prayed for love, justice and prosperity in Nigeria.

“In the land, of which He swore to your fathers to give you, you shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock. Who is the church? It is not the buildings it is the ecclesia; the called out; (Matthew 16:18-19),” said Mr Osinbajo. “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Mr Osinbajo, a pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has always encouraged Nigerians to look up to God for deliverance while the regime in which he serves struggles to tackle worsening insecurity and deepening poverty in Africa’s most populous nation.

Mr Buhari, too, had engaged in “intense” prayers at Saudi mosques for the economy to improve and bandits to stop killing and kidnapping people, especially in the North.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to lead a Christian crusade for improved security and economy as President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime battles to keep Nigeria from falling apart amid vicious bandit attacks and weakened naira.

Mr Osinbajo and David Abioye, the presiding bishop of Living Faith Church, Goshen, Abuja, are billed to grace the event themed ‘Faith in Jesus Christ in times of crisis’.

“The fellowship decided to hold the 2021 version via Zoom, and we are trusting God that the event will hold tomorrow (Thursday) by 7.00 a.m. By the grace of God, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, will be joining us as well as a couple of other dignitaries including diplomats,” said Emmanuel Bwacha, the chair of the National Assembly Christian Legislators Forum, while briefing journalists at a press conference.
On Wednesday, his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari, “spent quality time” at the mosque of the Prophet Muhammed, “engaging in prayers and recitation of the Holy Qur’an,” said presidential spokesman Garba Shehu in a statement.

“The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual fellowship where we pray for our country, pray for our responsibilities as parliamentarians for wisdom in passing bills that will benefit Nigerians. It was not held last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc on our economy, political and social sphere,” Mr Bwacha explained.
The prayer session will also be used to mark the 11th edition of the National Prayer Summit organised by the forum.

“As a fellowship, we are not partisan. Ours is to pray. We are not unaware of the fact that it is not easy to ask people to follow. But ours is to intercede,” he noted. “The increasing prices of foodstuff does not recognise political parties. It does not recognise geopolitics. It does not recognise tribe and has no segregation of age. So, our own is to pray on all issues so that our lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, will intervene and restore the glory of our nation and that we be able to overcome these challenges.”

InvestmentAfdb, U.S. Experts Back Osinbajo On Gas Projects Defunding by okefranci(op): 12:52pm On Oct 28, 2021
A continental and international rally may have begun in support of Nigeria’s advocacy to halt plans to defund gas projects, just as the global community moves towards the 2050 net-zero emissions target under the United Nations Climate Change agenda.

Nigeria has been on the forefront of international advocacy questioning the planned defunding of gas projects as one of the moves towards achieving net-zero emissions. Now, the continent-wide Africa Development Bank, AfDB, has thrown its weight behind the clamour during a meeting last week between Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and a delegation of the bank. So also did a team of U.S. experts recently in a widely published article.

The Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth at the African Development Bank, Kevin Kariuki, had led a delegation to pay the VP a visit on October 21 and expressed the bank’s commitment and support for a just energy transition.

His words: “First thing I would like to mention is that you have inspired us a lot in the recent past, through your strong and very well-articulated position on the issue of gas as far as Nigeria and Africa is concerned.

“You clearly stated that gas must be seen to be a transitional fuel for Africa, which is a position that our bank also supports because we do understand that Africa needs to increase its energy access, and you can’t increase energy access without utilising some of the resources and energy sources that we have. I believe that this position you have taken was also supported and stated by the Bank’s president (Mr. Akinwunmi Adesina) during the ministerial retreat.”

Mr Osinbajo has, in recent times, advocated for a just transition to global net-zero emissions, particularly calling on multilateral agencies, and western countries to stop the planned defunding of gas projects in developing countries.

At different national and international forums, including recent meetings with a delegation of the European Union (EU), at the Africa Regional Heads of Government Commonwealth Roundtable, and also at different meetings in London at the High-Level United Nations event on the Energy Transition plan in Africa, among others, Mr Osinbajo had maintained a firm stand against ending investments in gas projects in developing countries during the transition period.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Osinbajo said, “we are looking at commercial options and climate finance facility is one that we are trying to pay attention to.”

On Nigeria’s energy transition plan, the VP disclosed that one of the components in the plan included “the use of renewables and bringing that into the general stream of things that we are doing. We have a #SolarPowerNaija project, where we are hoping to connect 5 million homes with solar power, which is part of our Economic Sustainability Plan.”
The vice president welcomed AfDB’s support and stated that “we look forward to doing far more in the power sector and hope that we would be able to get your (AfDB) support going forward. We know that there are quite a few things that the bank has put resources into.

“Thank you very much for the great support we get from AfDB and also for your willingness and readiness at all times.”

Earlier on in his remarks, Mr Kariuki mentioned that at COP26, the AfDB would “be making a strong pitch to developed countries to fulfill their promise of the $100billion per year” that ought to have started in 2020, “because the significance is that today, even if we wanted to address the climate challenge, we really cannot do so because the issue of climate finance needs to be addressed in a big way.”
In another development, a number of US-based experienced clean energy policy researchers have argued that “the blunt exclusion of all non-renewable energy projects from development finance is an inequitable and ineffective climate strategy that gaslights over 1 billion Africans.”
In a recent article titled “Why banning financing for fossil fuel projects in Africa isn’t a climate solution,” scholars Benjamin Attia and Morgan Brazilian from the US Payne Institute submitted that “when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions, sub-Saharan Africa is collectively responsible for barely half a per cent of all global emissions over time, while the US, UK, EU, Japan and Russia are responsible for more than 100 times that amount, or about 57%.”

The experts referred to Mr Osinbajo’s advocacy on the issue. “Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo recently described “energy transition” as “a curious term” when applied universally, given the energy shortfalls in countries like Nigeria. He has argued for an energy transition in which Africa can develop quickly and grow.”

They noted that indeed “increasing electricity in industrializing regions of sub-Saharan Africa would first power income-generating activities and public services, both drivers of economic growth.”

The U.S. experts concluded that “equitable and effective climate negotiations will require nuanced policy considerations that balance the priorities of alleviating energy poverty with urgent climate change mitigation and adaptation. A just energy transition would leave African governments to make and implement policies and deliver on their own national climate commitments under the Paris Agreement rather than shouldering the West’s.”

President Buhari has said that 12 million children in the country are traumatized and afraid of going to school due to the rate of abduction in the country.

The President disclosed this during the opening of the Safe School Programme in Abuja on Tuesday, October 26.

Represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the President also said it had been tough dealing with security challenges in the country

“The incessant attacks on the country’s education system such as kidnapping, abduction of pupils/students, increased activities of insurgence and general insecurity in our schools have exacerbated many factors responsible for the growing number of out-of-school children.
It is disheartening to note that even when the abducted students are released, the trauma of the incidences remain long in their minds; hence the plan to have teachers trained on psycho-social support.
There are more than 12 million children currently traumatised and afraid of going to school, especially the girl child.

I must tell you that it has been tough dealing with these security challenges and their effect. Moving forward, our faith in the nation is unshaken. We have been strong, determined and robust in order to enhance the security of learning institutions.

Permit me to share with you a report released by S.B Morgen which revealed that a total of 1,462 learners and education personnel were abducted between 1st December 2019and September 2021 in school-related abductions, as well as home and community-related abductions of learners and teachers.

A total of 17 lives of teachers and learners have been lost in these abductions. On the other hand, for learners currently in school, the fear and trauma created by having their fellow students and friends attacked has impacted negatively on the quality of schooling as concentration and attention span for learning in such conditions have certainly waned.”the President said

The Vice-President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has urged the private sector to take advantage of home-grown innovations. He emphasised that there is a need for the private sector to tap fully into the innovative capacity of Nigerians.

Osinbajo made this statement at the 25th Nigerian Economic Summit Group which was held in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme “Securing our future: The fierce urgency of now”, Professor Osinbajo called on the private sector to take advantage of untapped resources – especially the youth – the nation has to offer.

He said, “I think we must focus on what this country has to offer in terms of all of the resources – both human and natural resources – and also the will, the energy, the innovativeness are all there for the private sector to take.

Osinbajo further stated that a country blessed with both human and natural resources can grow easily.

The VP said, “A country with all that can make growth possible and it’s only a matter of getting things right, moving a few things around, and will be well to the kind of progress to come as a country.”

He said the administration prioritizes implementation of beneficial policies rather than what is politically expedient stating, “We are looking at the fastest way to move from point A to point B.”

Osinbajo noted that one of the key ways the government has fought corruption is through the implementation of electronic and online payment platforms.

The VP expressed optimism that though there are challenges with the implementation of these policies, the administration remains committed to stamping out corruption in the public sector.

He noted that despite the challenges, the government launched the Visa on Arrival policy which has significantly reduced corruption in passport and visa applications.

The VP said that in implementing these electronic platforms, the young people have put all their energy and resources into developing these policies.

He said, “All the great ideas that we have, the young people putting all their energy and resources into them because the country affords us the opportunity to be able to achieve great things.”

He commended the resilience and response of the private sector in coping with economic challenges occasioned by COVID-19.
