PoliticsDirect Primaries: ‘osinbajo Not Taking Sides With Feuding Tripartite Committee’ by okefranci(op): 8:34am On Nov 11, 2021
The Presidency has said that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo did not take sides in Tuesday night’s meeting of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Tripartite Committee empanelled to resolve the differences among stakeholders over the National Assembly’s adoption of direct primaries by political parties to elect their candidates for elections.

Specifically, a meeting, which he presided over at the Banquet Hall of the presidential villa, Abuja, witnessed exchanges between proponents and opponents of the measure now embedded in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill passed by the National Assembly.

The tripartite committee is made up of the executive, state governors and members of the National Assembly under the platform of the APC.
A presidency source disclosed yesterday that while the exchanges were on, Osinbajo only played the role of a moderator on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, just as he never sought to impose his views on either side.

The meeting was divided between APC leaders and state governors on one hand who argued that direct primary would be impracticable, and APC caucus in the National Assembly on the other hand, who accused the governors of high handedness.

The source said: “Going into the meeting, everyone knew the matter was now in the President’s hand. The Vice President was playing the role of moderator on behalf of the President. So he took no sides but insisted on unity and concord and that party must always engage actively within itself while ensuring internal democracy.

“The Vice President ended the meeting only when everyone had been given a fair chance to ventilate.” Recall that the stakeholders on Tuesday failed to agree on the use of direct primaries by parties to select their candidates. Party leaders and state governors were unable to convince members of the National Assembly on the need to provide alternative for the direct primary option.

PoliticsOsinbajo Is Not Opposed To APC Direct Primaries -senator Adeyeye by okefranci(op): 6:46am On Nov 11, 2021
Senator Sola Adeyeye, a former Senate Chief Whip, has debunked an insinuation that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was opposed to the direct primaries option adopted for the All Progressive Congress (APC) at an expanded Tripartite Committee meeting of the party he presided over on Tuesday.

Prof Adeyeye, a stalwart of the ruling APC, currently representing the people of Osun Central at the Senate, said, any attempt to controvert Osinbajo’s stand on the direct primaries for party, would amount to revisionist rendition of what took place at the meeting.

Reacting, Prof Adeyeye said: “This is a revisionist rendition of what took place at the meeting. I have spoken with three persons that were present at the meeting. VeePee Osinbajo did not oppose Direct Primaries. As Chairman of the meeting, his role was conciliatory – steering disagreeing members of the same party from becoming disagreeable. Those rushing to towns with tales of their own creation do a disservice to the public and our Republic.”

The way Nigeria population is growing now is alarming and we need to be self employe rathan than depending on the government for survival
FoodNigeria’s Population Growth Rate Exceeds Job Creation Capacity – Osinbajo by okefranci(op): 11:20am On Nov 10, 2021
The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has said the country’s economy may not be able to create as many jobs as the country needs due to its high population growth rate.

He made the statement during his keynote address at the fourth annual Impact Investors Foundation Conference held in Lagos. The VP spoke virtually from his office in Abuja.

Osinbajo said, “The population growth rate consistently exceeds the capacity of the economy to produce sufficient jobs. It is also quite evident that some of the most lucrative businesses in the economy and with the profits they make, only a few people relative to the population benefit from the huge dividends that are declared.

“So glaringly, inequality in wealth, opportunities in the face of poverty, misery and social alienation in any society is simply asking for trouble. Such a situation is neither sustainable nor wise.

“The sharp drop in the standard of living caused by the COVID-19 pandemic-induced shocks on our economy and of course, our economy’s well being, not only further deepened the existing inequalities but pushed many people into extreme poverty,” the VP added.

Osinbajo added that impact investing was a sound approach to addressing the issues.

He said the current models of impact investing that seen in the country currently were not only inspiring but also pointed in the general direction policy and regulation should go. The founder and Chief Executive Officer of the IIF, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, had said earlier during her opening remarks that Nigeria needs to collaborate with in-country resources. She said, “This is why the focus of this conference is to show the opportunities for investing within Nigeria.
“Not just investing from the regular view, but understanding that doing good and doing well as a combined policy of our investment activities can be one of the greatest things that we could do.”

The IIF organizes its annual convening on impact investing to promote the impact investing sector in Nigeria and resolve the market barriers impeding its growth. Impact investing as defined by the IIF is one that solves socio-economic challenges while generating profit.

PoliticsFederal government Proposes More Allocations For LGs by okefranci(op): 4:55pm On Nov 09, 2021
Local governments should get more allocation in the new revenue formula, the Federal Government has proposed.

The Federal Government also recommended a reduction in the vertical allocations to it and State Governments.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Mr. Boss Mustapha, stated these while representing the Federal Government at the town hall meeting in Abuja for the review of the vertical allocation to the Federal, State and Local Governments made this disclosure.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary Political and Economic Affairs in the Office of the SGF, Mr. Andrew Adejoh, the SGF said the Federal Government will take a 3.05 per cent reduction in the allocation from the Federation Account and 1.1 per cent reduction in the allocation to State Governments.
For the Local Governments, the Federal Government wants 3.13 per cent added to their monthly take-homes from the Federation Account.
According to the SGF: “As an interim and immediate measure, the Federal Government, is, therefore, proposing the following: Federal Government 50.65 per cent; State Government 25.62 per cent; Local Government 23.73 per cent and Derivation Allocation 13 per cent.”

The present vertical Revenue Allocation Formula is Federal Government 52.68%; State Governments 26.72%; Local Governments 20.60% and Derivation Formula 13%.

HealthTo Address Inequalities, Social Benefits & Profit Can Co-exist, Says Osinbajo by okefranci(op): 4:14pm On Nov 09, 2021
In the face of inequalities in wealth and opportunity worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, impact investing - an approach that integrates society’s social and environmental goals, can no longer be ignored, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo made the observation today in a keynote speech delivered virtually at the 4th Impact Investors’ Foundation Annual Convening on Impact Investing.

According to the Vice President, “glaring inequalities of wealth and opportunity in the face of poverty, misery and social alienation in any society is asking for trouble. Such a situation is neither sustainable nor wise.

“The sharp drop in standards of living caused by COVID-19-induced shocks to the economy have not only further deepened existing inequalities, but pushed many more into extreme poverty.

“Neither governments nor businesses can afford to ignore the huge social disparities and environmental deterioration for long.

“So, impact investing is an eminently sound approach to balancing these inequities by catalyzing social and environmental impact for long-term structural change.”

He explained that “profit and sound social and environmental benefits can co-exist and governments can be facilitators of impact investment.”

Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo noted that “but because the logic of the profit motive as being the driver of innovation, wealth creation and growth is unassailable, the real question is how to ensure that it accommodates a moral compass.”

Advocating the growth of impact investing in Nigeria, the VP further explained that “a more sustainable business model is intentionally building into the profit making objective, the means of attaining society’s social and environmental goals. The notion of doing well by doing good, or harnessing the forces of innovation, entrepreneurship, private capital to achieve both profit and social and environmental good.”

“Some of the current models of impact investing we are seeing are not only inspiring but also point in the general direction that policy and regulation should go,” the Vice President added.

Citing examples in both public and private sectors, the VP noted that “there is an opportunity for collaborative thinking between government, the impact investing community and other stakeholders on policy and regulations.”

The VP cited the example of a digital agriculture company, Farmcrowdy which has “a platform that allows individuals to securely invest in farms online, enabling them to participate in agriculture indirectly.

“The other is Andela, the highly successful technology company that recruits and trains local software engineers at little or no cost, who in turn work remotely for them in various global companies, thereby generating good paying jobs for thousands of young people.”

The example in the public sector, the VP noted was in 2017 when government launched the first Sovereign Green Bond in Africa and the fourth in the world. “Proceeds of the bond as the name implies can only be used to finance for climate environmentally friendly or enhancing projects as approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).”

The Vice President explained further that “government’s action in this case was important because it took the risk of investing in a debt instrument in the locally and internationally uncharted waters of Environmental Finance. This is as it should be. A government bond is probably the one confidence enhancing mechanism for encouraging climate finance.

“The second example of government leadership in impact investing is our Solar Power Naija programme. A major component of our Economic Sustainability Plan in response to the severe economic fallout of the COVID 19 pandemic.”

The Vice President then submitted that “there is a great deal that is possible in impact investing, but there is a long way to go from the relatively random investment landscape we have now to a more orderly space where government regulations and incentives are carefully worked out with stakeholders.

“The point in the spectrum occupied by impact investors between Not-for-Profit Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) and For Profit entities is still essentially virgin.”

The Impact Investors’ Foundation was founded by the late Innocent Chukwuma and some other partners to promoting impact investment in Nigeria. Other speakers at the event include the representative of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Emeka Offor; the Chairperson of the Nigerian National Advisory Board for Impact Investing, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, and the United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, Mr Mohammed Yahya.

HealthHow Gov. Zulum Disguised As A Patient, Caught Officials Collecting N10,000 Bribe by okefranci(op): 11:48am On Nov 05, 2021
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State on Thursday disguised and visited some government hospitals unannounced, during which he discovered officials collecting between N8,000 to N10,000 from patients for services meant to be provided free of charge.

Zulum had summoned the Commissioner for Health, Mrs Juliana Bitrus, and asked her to join him in a 10-seater bus that is usually used for airport services.

The governor left the Government House around 1:30 pm without his convoy and siren and headed straight to the newly established primary healthcare centre at Gwange II ward in Maiduguri where he found out that some workers were collecting between N8,000 to N10,000 before diagnosing and treating patients of common ailments such as malaria.

“The staff we met here (at Gwange II, PHC) confirmed that they use to collect between N8,000 to N10,000 from patients to treat malaria. In fact, they have turned this government health centre into a private hospital, and this is why the centre has been deserted by people who mostly do not have the money to access services here. The workers just collect money and put it in their pockets,” an unhappy Zulum said.
The governor directed the Borno State Primary Healthcare Agency to thoroughly investigate, identify all the culprits and take appropriate disciplinary actions.

Christianity EtcRe: I Stopped Attending A Church Because Pastor Always Attacked Buhari, Says Adesina by okefranci(op): 9:34am On Nov 05, 2021
It is unfortunate that some pastors had turned their pulpits to soapboxes upon which they spew hatred and they deviate from preaching
Christianity EtcI Stopped Attending A Church Because Pastor Always Attacked Buhari, Says Adesina by okefranci(op): 9:22am On Nov 05, 2021
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says he stopped attending a branch of a church in Abuja because the pastor was always attacking the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Adesina said this in an article on Thursday titled, ‘This Kumuyi is simply different’, which was written in support of a statement by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi.

Although Adesina did not mention which church he stopped attending, his public profile states that he is a member of the Foursquare Gospel Church where he was ordained a pastor and has attended since 1988.

In the article, the President’s spokesman said it was unfortunate that some pastors had turned their pulpits to soapboxes upon which they spew hatred.
He wrote, “I used to attend a church in Abuja from 2015 to 2018, till the pastor began to see himself as someone who must bring the Buhari government down. Sunday after Sunday, it was all sorts of criticism from the pulpit. But I endured, since it was a branch of a church I had attended for over 30 years. Till one day, he overdid it.
“The Dapchi girls were abducted and there was no name the pastor did not call President Buhari that Sunday. It was horrendous that such things could come from the pulpit. But I suffered long and sat through the sermon, or rather, what was supposed to be a sermon. I then went home, wondering what the church of God was turning to.”

Adesina said after most of the Dapchi girls had been rescued, the pastor did not deem it fit to commend the President in subsequent service.

The President’s aide, however, praised Kumuyi for saying last week that Christians should not “disdain those in power because they appear not to be delivering on electoral pledges”.

He stated that while a former Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Dapo Asaju, was within his rights to be angry over the state of the country, it must be noted that the Buhari regime was doing a lot to change the nation’s fortunes.

Adesina said there were some men of God who predicted that Buhari would lose the 2019 election but it turned out to be a fake prophecy.

“Irrespective of the titles they bear, I hear bishops, apostles, prophets, pastors, evangelists, cursing the government, and issuing doomsday notices. One even said publicly that the Buhari administration was over, before the 2019 elections. But the man won handsomely, and that preacher still struts and frets on the pulpit every week, not repenting in sackcloth and ashes,” said Adesina.

He noted that during the #EndSARS protests of 2020, some pastors came out to support the youths who were protesting but they quickly recoiled into their shells when the protests got out of hand.

Adesina added, “Pastor Kumuyi also says if you are a true believer in Christ, you wouldn’t go on the rampage, destroying government property… But that was not what we saw in the country in October last year. The country was almost burned down under the subterfuge of EndSARS.

“And sadly, they were encouraged by pastors and preachers, who simply hate the fact that a Fulani man is their President. Many of them are on record as having encouraged the protesters, till things went ugly, turned awry. And the pastors vanished into the thin air. Not a word of caution or restraint as the cities were burning, and policemen were being killed, and even eaten up"
