Dependant Visa Ban: UK varsities hit with low revenues as Nigerians turn to Canada
By Biodun Busari

Most of the universities in the United Kingdom have been experiencing reduced admissions from international students including Nigerians over the dependant visa ban policy.

This has affected their revenues as they have significantly plummeted.

UK’s Dependant visa ban
Recall that the UK Home Office under the sacked interior secretary Suella Braverman introduced the dependant visa ban policy that restricted Nigerians and other foreigners from bringing family members with them starting from January 2024.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, while speaking on the policy in June said it was implemented to avoid overburdening the British economy’s housing infrastructure and to control the inflow of migrants.

Recounting the repercussions of the policy, the universities and business schools said they cannot meet the admission targets for the year 2024, according to a report by 2023 Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) Annual Membership Survey.

“In what appears to be an early signal of the impact of an important change to UK visa policy, nearly half (44%) of the country’s business schools are reporting that they will miss their non-EU recruitment targets this year,” the report said.

“When reporting on performance against non-EU recruitment targets for the 2023/24 academic year, nearly three in ten responding institutions (29%) said they had either significantly or moderately exceeded their goal. Another 27% said they had met their recruitment target.

“But the remaining 44% said that they fell short of their recruitment goals, of which 22% reported being “significantly below” their target enrolment.

“The survey report added: ‘There is significant variation in the results by level of study for non-EU international enrolments, as at undergraduate level nearly half of the schools either significantly or moderately exceeded target compared to one-third of schools at postgraduate level.

“At postgraduate level nearly 50% of schools reported recruitment that was either significantly or moderately below target for non-EU international students, compared to 21% at undergraduate level.’”

It further stated, “Survey respondents reported that they were seeing some of the most significant increases in non-EU enrolment from India, Pakistan, and Ghana.

“All these countries had more business schools seeing increases in enrolments for the new academic year than decreases,” notes the report. “Growth in enrolments from Nepal and Saudi Arabia were also cited by several schools. None of the schools cited decreases in enrolments from Nepal, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.”

Nigerian and Chinese foreign students
Affected by the dependant visa restriction policy, the report disclosed that Nigerians and Chinese have reduced their admissions to British universities, as it said, “the most frequently cited countries for declining enrolments were China and Nigeria, which could suggest a reversal in the growth in recruitment from these key countries in recent years.”

Canada and Australia benefitting from UK’s dependant visa ban
The report further asserted that the number of international students seeking admission to study Master in Business Administration (MBA) has reduced, especially from Nigerian and Chinese people. It further said these foreign students have turned to Canadian and Australian universities which are now immigrant-friendly destinations.

In May 2023, the British government announced that international students would be prevented from bringing dependants with them as of January 2024 (unless students are in postgraduate programmes with a research focus).

The Home Office said at the time that almost half a million student visas were issued in 2022 while the number of dependants of overseas students has increased by 750% since 2019, to 136,000 people. The move to limit accompanying dependents was explicitly done to curb net migration, and was described by the Home Secretary as the “single biggest tightening measure a government has ever done.”

The vast majority of respondents to the CABS survey said that they expect to see negative impacts on non-EU enrolment arising from the policy.

According to the report, “It is anticipated that enrolments for MBA programmes will be most affected as MBA students tend to be older and often wish to bring their family with them. Other post-experience programmes, such as Executive Education programmes sponsored by a company, are also expected to be more adversely impacted due to students being more likely to have children.

“Many [respondents] mentioned that the change has prompted them to reassess their school’s strategy which includes shifting MBAs and Master’s programmes to online delivery if not already offered in this mode, and focusing on growing international student numbers at an undergraduate level instead. There is also a sense that the recruitment of business schools in competitor countries such as Australia and Canada is already benefitting from the UK’s decision to ban visas for dependents of students.”

The revenue impact
The survey found overall that UK universities remain highly dependent on business school tuition revenue, and that, with the downward pressure on non-EU enrolments for this year in particular, the financial outlook for the year ahead is weakening.

“While 28% and 49% of respondents in 2022 stated that they expected significant and moderate increases in income respectively, these numbers have fallen to 9% and 36% in this year’s edition of the survey. 30% of business schools expect a decrease in income compared to only 2% in last year’s survey,” it added.

A young Nigerian, Tonye Solomon, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has set another Guinness World Record.

Mr Solomon, on 10 August, set the record for the most steps (150) climbed on a ladder while balancing a football (soccer ball) on the head, according to the Guinness World Records.

“Tonye attempted this record to challenge himself and to inspire others to do great things. He spent two months training for the attempt until he was confident he could achieve the record,” the global body stated on its website.

The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, congratulated Mr Solomon for the “feat”.

“Such a great feat is inspiring, and it’s worth celebrating. We are proud of you Champ!” Mr Ewhrudjakpo said on Twitter, on Thursday.

Guinness World Records at some point said they had received some 1,500 applications from Nigerians in just two months.

Before Ms Baci, there was 15-year-old Vincent Okezie, a secondary school student, who had set four Guinness World Records in 2022.

The teenager told PREMIUM TIMES that he felt rejected because Nigerians did not celebrate his achievements the way they did when Ms Baci set her world record.

“I feel like my country has rejected me. Also, I feel not recognised. I asked myself if it were only women that are usually recognised in Nigeria because even though other boys won Guinness World Records in my academy, nobody celebrated them or recognised them,” he said.

We are destroying when we haven't created one?

Why not auction them or give them to teenagers to convert them to some other uses. I mean think about repurposing

Punishment mustn't be about destroying things.

People saying the world doesn't work like that, who is making the rules?

With all the ones LASG has destroyed so far, much hasn't changed still. Tells you this is not the ultimate solution.

Because it's okada, what if it was some powerful rides, trailer or luxury bus that disobeyed traffic rules or ply where they are not allowed to, would crushing them also be considered?

You want to cook soup..

You mix Ofe nsala with Okra with gbegiri with fisherman soup with owho & banga with Afang with black soup etc..

And when the soup is ready and brought down from the fire, you tag it Yoruba soup.

Uche + Ejiro + Haruna + Osariemen + Tunde + Uduak, gathered money to build a house.

When the house was ready, Tunde insisted that the property is solely his.

This analogy is apt for those of you who refer to Lagos as Yoruba land.

Lagos was the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria from 1914 - 1991.

Is 77years of Federal funding beans to you?

FCT Pre-Independence and 31yrs Post - Independence.

As FCT, Lagos benefitted TREMENDOUSLY from loads of capital projects and developments funded from Federal reserves.

What that means is that monies made by Nigerians and derived from every other part of Nigeria including lagos, were merged together and invested into lagos to develop it.

Once again, for how long - 77yrs.

It also means that as FCT, people from various parts of Nigeria were pulled to Lagos for all kinds of Federal jobs and opportunities.

Just think about the numerous Federal parastatals - NEPA, NITEL, Water Corporation, Railways etc...All of these bodies had workers from all over Nigeria and there were housing estates built for staff, all living and working in Lagos.

They worked here, got married here, had their children here, built their lives and networks here in lagos...etc and they contributed humongously to commerce & trade, investments and the general economic welfare of lagos.

It's just like walking into a government office in Abuja and expecting to see only Hausa / Fulani people.

It is not possible..

The moment Abuja became FCT, it triggered the relocation of members of every single tribe in Nigeria to Abuja by virtue of Federal Positions, Businesses and Opportunities, and justifiably so because funds from the states of all those different tribes are being invested in Abuja. This was the case with lagos for 77yrs.

There are a lot of Yoruba and Igbo people in Abuja today who only moved there because - FCT.

Igbo people and other Non-Igbo tribes did not leave their states to settle down in lagos because Yoruba people had made lagos so habitable..

Noooo!!!!!!

This happened because lagos enjoyed the title and all the benefits of being the FCT for 77yrs.

The reason Lagos state got a head start on other states as regards significant development is solidly based on developments made by virtue of colonial rule and being the FCT.

The biggest sea port was built in Lagos Nigeria, from all of our monies.. not Yoruba money...

The biggest international airport with international and cargo terminals was built in lagos, with all of our monies...not Yoruba money..

The longest bridge in Nigeria was built in lagos, with all of our monies... not Yoruba money..

Till this day.. there are assets, buildings, structures, roads, lands within lagos state with ownership still fully vested in the Federal government.

You can not buy, renovate, develop, construct or reconstruct them without federal approval and they were built with all of our monies - not yoruba money..

How does a state enjoy Federal funding, Federal patronage and Federal migrations for 77yrs and then 32yrs later you refer to it as a state belonging to one tribe.

Why are people not saying that Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti states etc is no man's land.

Why are they not naming any other state in Nigeria or in the whole of the west apart from lagos and referring to it as "No man's land".

All of your irritation over lagos being tagged no man's land is based on greed, because based on Justice, that tag is apt.

No tribe in Nigeria should be able to solely lay claim / ownership of a state in Nigeria that was funded, built and developed with every other tribe's money for 77yrs...

You may not like it... but it doesn't change the fact.

Lagos did not become the 3rd largest economy in Africa off of Yoruba money or Yoruba resources...it earned that title off of Nigeria's money and Nigeria's resources...

Till date, the bulk of Lagos state's funding is generated from tax, and tax funding arises from its population and that population arose yet again from its being FCT for 77 yrs... not from the fact that every other tribe just wanted to leave their home towns and come and dwell with Yoruba people in lagos.

This is the TRUTH and those who love to distort facts for their selfish gains may hate it.. But this TRUTH will forever remain salient.

Lagos claims it wants to build a Mega City. How do they tag it? Cosmopolitan Lagos!!! But it cannot rise above village people mentality. It cannot overcome the mediocrity of holding the city tightly within the claws of one tribe.

It's like a man who says he wants to grow a gigantic business but hasn't got the guts to turn it into a public company..

Abuja was named FCT in 1991. We have all sat back and watched Abuja grow from an obscure and under populated town... to a little london based on funding from all of our joint federal reserves...all of our joint efforts.

Tomorrow, FCT will be taken away from Abuja and people will gather to tell me that this Abuja, that large chunks of money from my own state - Delta state, was and is still being used to develop, build and grow, is Hausa land.

Cool story Bro..
Cool story....
Keep lying to yourselves.
