Ttalk: Your story raises so much concern until i got to where you invested in MMM and i quickly know what might be the cause of your loss.
Let me be practical about fish business. I would say you need at least 4 consecutive stocking with complete dedication before you master strategy that would quarrantee profit in the business.
Also, concrete pond system requires substantial investment over some period of time for it to generate income and profit. Initial investment in fish business requires external fund to boost it and not depend on reinvesting profit from the business, because there is no such profit at the initial stage.
One thing i know of a certain is that fish farming is a business, it is not a lotto, coupon, kalokalo or gambling. You must have a business mind in order to succeed.
But how can you have business mind and still believe in MMM?
Learn all the strategies that would make you succeed from people around you that are successful. There is no magic in this business. You do the right thing, you get the right result. Work on your water management, think solar, flow through, aeration, partial re-circulatory. Think feed, formulation, feed supplementary. Think added value to your product. I tell you there are so many potential that would guarantee you money with proper investment.
I wish you best of luck Thanks so much for the advice, I learnt my lesson the had way, am taking time to fix the areas that things went wrong and also trying to do visits to those who are getting it right. |

OnuohaClever: hmmm, finally i am here.... 389 pages!!! this is the knowledge base of fish farming. Robonski, exclesior, Ttalk, abx1 and co., may the Almoghty God continue to enrich you guys greatly for unveiling the "hidden secrets of catfish business".
My journey into this business started on the 22nd April 2017 when i was lured into the fish rearing business by a supposed friend (who was only interested in selling tarpaulin pond and expensive fingerlings @N50 naira to me). I was abandoned to my faith as i never saw him again because i guess he has achieved his objective which is to defraud me instead of mentoring me.
i was at cross roads as i had no prior experience until i stumbled on this thread on "the hidden truth of catfish business" on the 25th April 2017, as a good student i took my pen and paper, studied each page on the thread. i must say that as a newbie, i am already equipped with the best practices in catfish business.
Like i said earlier i stocked 1000 fingerlings (only to discover that it wasn't up 700 fingerlings because i was short changed as a result of not counting my fishes when it was delivered to me -- lesson learnt according to the Thread: Always count your fingerlings before you stock. During the first week, my fingerlings (60 of them) where dying in the first week until i deployed deep water aerator (having read about it in this thread) in the second week. The aerator is integrated into my 2Kva inverter system in my house. Oh least i forget, i have a backyard farm in my house at Abuja measuring 125 Feet by 50 Feet full fenced with borehole to be used for fish farming. i have been getting tips on best practices on fish farming with consulting anyone for the past two months. Now let me share my experience so far with you guys;
1. Most of my fishes attained 400g in exactly two months after stocking (remember i told i did not deploy aerator in the first week) 2. I lost about 60 fingerlings in the first week before deployment of aerator but after the deployment of the aerator i have only lost 1 fish in two moths 3. i measured the weight again of my fish after Two months and 1 week, guess what? they now weigh 500g. That is additional 100g in a week 4. i change my fish pond water every 7 days thus reducing the overhead cost of changing water every 3 days ( the aerators are on 24/7 every day of the month i don't think i can go with this business without a deep water aerator technology because with dissolved oxygen, your fishes grow faster and there will be no need for medication (as i not bought a single one). I have sorted my fishes into two different ponds and i have also stcked additional 2000 hybrid fingerlings and so far only three have died as they are in their second week. i will upload pictures later I really want to appreciate you guys for putting out this info for people like us to utilize. Robonski, i also want to join AQUABREN, please endeavour to furnish with details of how to become a member on my mail workwithclever@gmail.com Almighty God will continue to bless the works of thy hand. Can u please post the picture of Deep water Areator you deployed and the cost. Thanks in Advance |

Ttalk: I congratulate you on your success on first attempt. Your seed despite being expensive must have been very good seed. What feed did you use? Where in Abuja your farm is located so i will pay you visit very soon Hello Ttalk, I really appreciate your contributions and support to farmers on this platform and by visitation. By way of digression I would like you give an update on "kaykaymill farm" he created "How I started my earthen pond" with a lot of details. Hmmmm it's been a very long time I visited this thread. I can see that the strong are still very active in the business.
It still hurts to see the assets I put so much passion, energy and money into for rearing catfish lay in waste. After 5 consecutive loss at harvest with no one to hold responsible, juveniles seller will blame either your feed, water or farm practices for the poor output and even if same person supply all they will still find something to shift the blame to.
Do you want to talk about the buyers who price the fish same amount as they buy from the catfish wizards in Ijebu. Who can sell at the most ridiculous prices and still make profit compared to me in town that changes water in concrete pond 4 to 5 times a week with every expensive petrol and to talk of feed that rises in cost by excruciating percentage without warning.
Now I wonder what is the average cost of good feed per kg, cost of seed, cost changing water, cost of treatment in relation to selling price kg bearing in mind an average small farmer that raises 2-3 thousands fishes per cycle in a concrete or tarpaulin pond.
One now begin to wonder, is making profit in catfish farming truly real as we read on this thread and in other places. I still wonder how survived paying back my investors who I promised return on their investment after making loss on the actual money.
After paying them, what I had left could not raise another cycle as the associated cost will even increase the loss more because volume as been the major advantage of catfish farming. Then I decided to pour what I have left in Moku Mogbe Modaran (MMM) to turn around the money to be enough to raise another cycle to see if I can make make profit. We all know how the story went.
What do I do now with the Concrete pond that is diminishing by the day without use, the reserve the tank and borehole (at least they are still put to other use).
@Robonski, @Chilan @other gurus in the house who have survived in the business so far, please WHAT DO I DO.....?! |

abunafiu: Nasonaso...kindly analyse the post below by bigrovar..
I have very little electrical background coming mostly from IT. The idea is to have a very small offgrid system which will power essential appliances in my house. Basically Home Entertainment system and Lights. I knew for a long time that my future would be renewable and to prepare for this, I gradually installed energy efficient 8w philips bulbs in my house. I also have a 43inch LED tv, a 1100watt 5.1 sound system, a laptop acting as a media center, and a dstv satellite reciever. From my estimate my total load for this system would be Max 600w. I have 90% of the component I require for this project which I intend to DIY with an electrician friend who will assist with grounding and other areas. I would appreciate if all the gurus can looking into my plan and point out areas I can makde improvements etc Design: PV I have 2 240w polycrystalline panels with the following specs VMP=30.1 IMP=7.78 I intend to have the panels mounted on the ground. Reason for ground mounting are as follow: * South facing part of my roof is completely shaded by 15:00 till sun set. (This is pretty much the main reason) * Since it is a rented apartment, not comfortable with tempering with the roof *Easy access to panels to carry out cleaning (Abuja can be very dusty) and ease of removal in case I leave the premise * Phobia for height Wiring, Distance and Losses The estimated length of wire which would be required to the power from PV to CC should be about 60feet. Hence I intend to connect the panels in series to reduce resistance and allow me use a 6mm cable with estimated loss of 3-5% (depending on the weather, position of the sun etc). I plan to use 10mm between the controllers and the batteries and batteries and inverter. Charge controller 3215RN Epsolar MPPT rated at 30A Batteries: 2 200AH SMF Sukam (I know I know - But it is what I could afford) Deep cycle batteries, connected in parallel Inverter 12v Sukam 1050v falcon plus inverter: would of loved to use something more industry standard but had to keep the setup within my budget. The falcon plus seem to be the best option availble to me (from all the low end inverter models out there) and here is why. It has built in temperature sensor for ATC and a SMPS for power factor correction and does the "6 stage charge" at least according to this review http://upsinverterinfo.com/su-kam-falcon-plus- inverter-unbiased-indepth-review.html It also could work in low current between 90v -240v. Anyway based on my budget it was what I could afford. Charge current = 14A Protection and Safety: I put a 10A Cbi vdc breaker between PV and CC, a 40A Cbi vdc breaker between CC and Battery, and a 63 vdc Cbi Breaker between Inverter and Battery. I also intend to put a 15A AC breaker between Grid and Inverter and a 20A AC breaker between Inverter and Load. I also intend to ground all the equipment from the panel frames to the panel, cc and inverter. Infuture and close to raining season I hope to get a thunder arrestor I intend to have all the load the inverter would be powering to terminate to a separate DB from the main house DB. This is meant to reduce issues of overloading the Inverter since only the load to be powered by the Inverter will be terminated to the inverter nothing more. Run time: I intend for the backup time for the system to be 6 hours. My max load is 450w.. lets say less than 500w * 6 = 3000 / 12 = 250ah. Because I have a battery bank of 400ah. I hope to ensure I don't pass the 62.7 state of discharge. considering that I will not be running all the loads at the same time. I expect the state of discharge threshold to be close to the 50% mark. When am out during the day, I might consider running the freezer with a timer based plug and set it to run between 12-14:00 depending on the weather. What I have: CC, Breakers, Panels,Inverter, Cables. What am expecting: Ordered 10 mc4 connectors from Aliexpress, a Killawatt meter, an MC4 Crimping tool and MC4 disconnect wrench. I hope to start the setup and installation once the tools arrive. There is pretty much my solar plan. I would appreciate if all the gurus look through and point out mistakes and suggestions. Abeg what else do you want to know o, am sure most ppl like me have learnt so much from your question cum expose. Am not an authority in the field but, am very sure you have acts together in this... |

feflo: Thanks for your compliments, really so sorry for your loss and hope you have learnt one or two things from it. I'll be glad if you can share the mistake that led to damaging your batteries here so that we all can learn from it. I personally don't know any technology that can be employed to salvage dead batteries. I'll love that you call me so that we can together look for solution to the problem at the most minimal cost.
Many Thanks I can't tell the exact mistake I made, what happened was that I saw the inverter with a guy that sells power tools like drilling machine, grinders and the rest, he only happens to have the inverter in his shop and I asked him if it works and he said it is working fine, we could not even test it that day as there was no battery in his shop since that is not what he deals on. I was desperate for that inverter because the one at home was bad, he gave me his word that I can return it if it doesn't work, I connected it to my battery of less than 6 months brand new slim Ritar 200ah and there was light all night till 6am the next morning, then I put it on blving that it must have charged very well only for it to go off in 20min. I couldn't do anything about I left till I came back from work and I was told that there was light for considerable hours so I bliv it must be charged like the new one does only for it to do same. I called the guy he asked me to bring it on getting there I tot he will refund my money, collected it and told me tp come back some days after that he would have fixed it, I he went back on the said day he gave back to me and was requesting that I give more money and I refused collected the inverter and left. During that time I had located the service centre and fixed my new inverter that went bad that's when I noticed the battery had gone bad. I took the inverter from the guy straight to the office and connect it to the battery in the office in less than 30mins it ran down a battery dat lasts hours, that went I knew I had use my money to buy wahala. The inverter actually damaged 2 batteries, one at home another at office, the run time for the at office was seriously reduced to like 45mins after the incident. That is when I new the that the inverter was the culprit. I just dump it somewhere. I will post the picture later for you to see. The most painful part was that I had a blue gate ups at home that I could have converted in the meam time. So when I stumbled on this thread I felt like crying because the cost of the battery now is so painful. With the way things are in the era of CHANGE. So please what was my mistake... |

I can bliv I read all the tread in one day, you ar indeed a blessing to this generation, I wish I had seen this thread earlier, I made very costly mistake that damaged my 200ah battery rita slim, I bought a used inverter from someone when the new one I bought blew up due to overloading, while I was trying to look for how to repair. I saw it very cheap and jumped at it, only for it to damage my battery which is now very expensive.
Please is there anyway the battery can be salvaged. It doesn't charge more than 3 minutes and when load a single 16w bulb the inverter starts to make.
Note I have fixed the inverter that blew up at their service centre. |

darediamond: First thing first, when choosing your Solar Panel, if you can not get 3-junction PVC , then buy only Monocrystaline Panels.
You need not to spend so much to get Solar Generator to Power your Electronics.
Original Mercury Deep Cell Battery made in Korea works well for me.
Unless you need power in the evening, you can preferably buy Grid-tie Inverter which is always all in one as it as been integrated with Maximum Power Point Tracker Controller to enable you get the most out of your Solar Panels. BuybMonocrystaline Panels always only.
You can still use battery with a grid-tie inverter mind you. Butbif you are on rigth budget, then G.T inverter will save you cost at the expense of no night power.
MPTT controller integrated in grid tie inverter makes sure that if your Panel is rated at 300w for example, you will at least be getting a minimum of 250 Watt of Power from your panel during the daylight.
Make sure the inverter you will buy have proper copper wound transformer and is as well integrated with Overload Protection, Short Circuit Protection, battery Low Voltage Protection.
I bougth my Panels from China as well as my Pure Sine Wave Inverter.
Pure Sine Wave Inverter is what you should always go for to keep safe your electronics from possible malfunction and fault.
You can buy your Pure Sine Wave inverter on Aliexpress. Mine is name I power. It is built to withstand Overload, reverse Polarity etc.and I have tested all this Protection levels and it works fine. No damage at all. When you mistakenly overload it for example, instead of it to affect it internal component like MOSFET, the inverter will Shut down on it own. Immaginne that!
You can buy your Panels from Chinese on Alibaba.com
Just negotiate with the sale rep per watt starting fro say 10Watt. But prepare he or she ahead to agree to the fact that the more wattage you buy, the lesser the price. But presently, most manufactures are selling Monocrystaline Cellers per Wattage between 30cent to 55cent.
Solar Business is the next big highly lucrativevBiz you can go into now. You justvhave to avoid greediness in the biz to make it big time or do I say attract people at large to buy from you.
One Package you can bring in now is 120Watt Folding Monocrystaline Panel with 150W Pure Sine Wave Grid Tie Inverter with 5V 2A USB port. This Package is for Students.
You can even remove the inverter and go straight for Integrated Universal Laptop DC to DC Charger of 150. The integration therein implies that the DC to DC universal Laptop Adapter will have on it board MPTT Circuit which will be feeding the main Circuit of the Universal Laptop Adapter Circuit.
So Buyers of this Package will need no Battery at all to use the folding 120watt Monocrystaline Panel to get there Laptops Charged during the day anywhere they are.
The panel will have a shock absorbing carrier bag to ensure Smith mobility. It Advance universal adapter will have the major tips of Laptop brands like Accer, Samsung etc.
You can get electronics engineering company to newly manufacture this type of laptop adapter for you.
The adapter can also be made to have 2 USB output of 5v/2A each for fast charging assurance.
If you have the money go into this Biz now forget electronics as people lacks constant power supply to power there phones let alone other bigger ones.
Be wise. Be a problem solver not Problem creator. @darediamond, do you currently have the setup you just described and how effective is it.. |

Answer Concrete pond My earlier write up was never how to make profit, it was about the accounting model you can use to identify the important cost elements and then fix what cost is peculiar to your system of rearing which help you to get a better picture of how you are doing in the business. From analysis you said I gave, in your own opinion you deduced that the batch of production could not have given any good profit. That was what you can see it's your opinion and you are entitled to it. excelsiorfarm: @ olabakefish, forum is for rubbing minds, now my question, how did u arrived at fish taking 520grams to reach 1.2kg, how long? was it earthen or other ponds? for d rest written, pardon me for not reading them because it will only increase questions i would love clarity of answers. my bro, pls just enlighten me ,thanks @ excelsiorfarm it's a phenomenon cum question that have been bugging my mind as well but it happened. This was in a concrete pond of one of the farm that I understudied own by my mother in-law which is in the same compound where I built my concrete pond and we share resources. And there were 3 fishes that had this size in that particular stock and some where as small as 300grms. The fishes were harvested in December 2015 3 days after Xmas. You may ask how was I able to know the amount of feed they consumed. My mother in law did her best to make sure that she kept a daily record of what happened on the pond that she new how many fishes die on which day, what amount of feed was bought on which day. Funny enough on the record were on two separate occasions when she feed the fishes with cabin biscuits when she couldn't get feed for the fishes. From the record I added all the quantity of feed the fish ate from inception till harvest over a four months period and divided it by number of fishes she stocked. She feed them with coppens in the first month switched to vital the second and local formulated on the 3rd and 4th month. In total the quantity the ate was 520kg which I divided by 1000 fishes she stocked meaning on the average each fish ate 520grms. How those fishes got to 1.2kg is what I get explain. May the Ogas can help with that. |

chilanfarms: To table size ur feed budget is wrong, why stay on a particular feed frm juvenile to table size? They only need 36% animal protein frm fingerlins to post jumbo frm post jumbo to melange u cut animal protein to 28% and as d climbing goes up u reduce animal protein wic is d most expensive ingredient in feed production. @Chilanfarms the budget is neither wrong nor right it is a model subjected various factors, do you know that you can use only either coppens, Ranaan, Aqua Aller vital or top feeds, alone bearing in mind they all have different sizes and protien requirements for different ages of catfish and you can decide to stick to one brand from start to finish. At the end when you check the total quantity of feed to total cost you get an average cost per kg. Based on my pricing research on average cost per kg of some selected feed brands as at March 2016 in Alagbado area of Lagos Coppens is N400/kg Ranaan 335/kg Vital 300/kg Well constited local feed 250/kg Mind you, some of the respected contributors of this page Oga Soft777 and Robonski15 are the architects of the feed I used as reference point which many of us are commending including you if am not mistaken. Made us understand that the Magnet Gelatin feeds with 62% cp of which higher % are animal protein can be applied to the fishes from Juveniles which was the fish age I used. I used the newly produced floating Gelatin as a reference which is even more expensive than the powder and pelleted ones which are about N200/kg or there about. Like I said earlier it's model in which you can slot in your peculiar cost elements. Chilanfarms you are also a respected contributor, it will help baby farmers like us, if you can tell us the the Magnet Gelatin feeds in not fit to be used as a point of reference in account model, I took my intellectual knowledge and time to come up with to help us in this forum. This accounting aspect of me speaking not the baby fish farmer. Olabake fish 'More Fish Oil to your Elbow' I rest my case |

There is no straight way jacket to this in my humble opinion. I have tried wrapping my head round this for a while and the following are what I deduced. You need to first understand the major cost elements in relation to the peculiarity of reactions to other cost input given that they are constant. What I mean is that there are different variables that can be held responsible when output is not as expected. From the above, quality of seed (fingerlings or Juveniles), quality of water, quality of feed, type pond, management practices (feeding, change of water and diseases control) all play keys roles and are major determinants of output. Given that you are able to get major variables right, which in most cases can't be 100%. The next thing is budget planning. A lot of farmers seems to run into serious trouble with budget planning especially on feeding, I am a living example, I had to quickly dispose my stock aim at table size for melange with just 2wks to expected time. Why because I had underfeed them and with the wrong version of feed in a bid to cut costs. I will talk about feeding first which usually deals farmers with the deadliest blow. By rule of catfish farming to get 1kg fish you have feed the fish 1kg feed some may take less to give save size I have seen fish take just 520grms and grew to 1.2kg. The experts like Oga soft and Oga Robonski usually recommend at least 800grms to get 1kg given that all other variables are correct. An accounting minded person will always exercise caution in budget planning by envisaging the highest cost possible and the lowest returns possible. Let take rearing 1000 fishes to table size from juveniles for example. Major cost to be considered are: Cost of seeds (1000 x N 20) - N 20,000 Cost of feed (800grms x 1000 fishes) = 800kg x N240/kg (current price Magnet floating feed) = N 192,000 Cost of pond for the period- (to be determined by you i. e divide cost of building the pond by useful life period) Cost of labour - (to be determined by you i.e you take care of the fishes yourself or you employ ppl) Cost of medication- usually minimal if mgt practice is good Cost changing water - depends heavily on type of pond and system you practice Other miscellaneous costs. After arriving that total cost for the production period, the next thing is to determine your revenue, don't forget I said envisage the highest cost and the lowest revenue this will help to absorb unfavorable unexpected events. Ask around in your locality what price do they buy your target production size. You will get different prices then pick the lowest price, it doesn't mean you sell at that in the end. Also important, have it at the back of your mind that you will lose close to 15% of your stock before harvesting if not more. You can even raise it to 20% like oga soft told that if he want 5000 fishes for harvest he stocks 6000. You can do d maths. After that not all fishes will reach 1kg at harvesting time and will go beyond 1kg. That why important practice like sorting and adequate feeding should not be over looked. Oga soft they talk am try and sort your stock he told us that a farmer stock 5k fishes only to see 1k fish at harvest and fish don't dissappear. Let's take lowest price N 450/kg in my locality AIT area Alagbado in Lagos and you get most likely 750kg at harvest i. e N450 x 750kg = N337,500 as your revenue Then your profit for the production period will be Revenue - Total cost N337,500 - (20,000+192,000+ others to be determined) = N ? Note the prices are prevailing prices as at March 2016 in my locality as mentioned above so in using this model you need to consider the environmental factors in your vicinity. I rest my case in my own humble opinion. My learnered Ogas at the top can help make corrections where necessary we are all here to learn. Olabake fish 'More Fish Oil to your Elbow. |
