Politics / Catholic Church Lambast GEJ For OPC Rally by olaoluwajosh: 10:00am On Mar 18, 2015
Through its Justice, Development and Peace Centre (JDPC), the Catholic Church yesterday called for the total independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It urged that the electoral umpire be detached from the apron-strings of serving politicians by fully implementing the recommendations of the Justice Muhammed Uwais Commission.
The commission had recommended among other things that the Chairman of INEC should be appointed by the judiciary rather than the President.
The JDPC gave the recommendation at a press conference in Lagos.
Its Executive Director, Rev. Fr. Raymond Anoliefo, who spoke under the theme: “State of the Nation: Political Logjam Trails Nigeria’s ‘First’ Election in the Fourth Republic”, frowned at the call by members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its supporters for the sack of INEC chair, Prof. Attahiru Jega for asserting the independence of the commission.
He said the call for the removal of an electoral chief was neither new nor strange, as “there had never been one since 1960 who was not handed a quit notice by politicians and their followers”.
But, the strange thing about the call for Jega’s removal, he explained, “is that the calls are coming from the ruling party”.
The JDPC director noted that the call from the employers of the INEC chief was the first of its kind in the nation’s political history.
Anoliefo said it was curious that unlike in Ghana, Sierra Leone and South Africa, that in Nigeria, an electoral chief must be obedient, pliant public servant, who must bend the rules to favour his employers or paymasters

Politics / Opposition Party Leaders Behind Fuel Scarcity-pdp Alleges by olaoluwajosh: 5:06pm On Mar 02, 2015
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adamu Mu’aazu, on Monday alleged that the current fuel scarcity in the country was sponsored by some opposition leaders.

Mu’azu, in a series of tweets on his official Twitter page, alleged that the opposition leaders and some vested interests were behind the hoarding of fuel which, according to him, was responsible for fuel scarcity in the country.

He, however, did not mention the names of the opposition leaders.

The PDP chairman said the fuel scarcity was engineered to undermine the profile of President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the elections.

He said all plans to tarnish the image of Jonathan would not work.

He said in the tweets, “Concerned Nigerians have drawn our attention to the fact that some opposition leaders and vested interest are behind hoarding of fuel.

“Concerned Nigerians also draw our attention to plans by those who control the South-West disco to sabotage electricity in the zone.

“We assure Nigerians, they will fail. All their plans to tarnish the image of government will fail like all other previous attempts. We want to assure concerned Nigerians, especially all of you here on social media, that we will reverse this trend soonest.”

Politics / 10 Questions For President Goodluck by olaoluwajosh: 3:19pm On Feb 12, 2015
1) You have always promised Nigerians and the international community free and credible elections. Yet a recently leaked audio recording suggested that you directed the military to rig last year’s Ekiti governorship election in favour of your party. In fact, your then Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, was overheard in the recording saying he was on a presidential assignment to rig the election. What exactly was your role in that saga? And why have you not commented on the matter or order an investigation?

2) Mr. President, you have always said that his election is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. But Niger Delta militants have on more than one occasion threatened blood and war if you are not re-elected. Some PDP governors – specifically those of Katsina and Kaduna – have been heard loud and clear threatening violence on their opponents. Why have you remained quiet over such inciting statements?

3) Can you, Mr. President, on your honour, give a clear commitment that INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, will be allowed to conduct the rescheduled polls, given speculations you might illegally send him off before the polls? Nigerians are suspicious you might give him the kind of treatments you gave Justice Ayo Salami and former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido.

4) Mr. Buhari, your main challenger in the presidential election, has contested thrice and lost thrice. From his first outing in 2003 to the last in 2011, he never drew a significant popular support across board as many Nigerians viewed him as part of the old system. As Mr. Buhari’s co-contestant in 2011 and now 2015, what do you think is responsible for what appears a massive support for the same Mr. Buhari this time around?

5) Mr. President, besides widespread unemployment in Nigeria, one of the talking points of this electioneering has been the action of one of your ministers who apparently seized on the widespread unemployment in Nigeria to collect nearly a billion naira from unemployed Nigerians without giving them jobs. He did so through a company he unilaterally appointed, against public procurement rules. Worst, at least a dozen people who turned up for the job test died. These much were confirmed by a Senate investigation. Why have you, the president our country, failed to sanction Minister Abba Moro who committed these acts?

6) Mr. President, you said in 2011 you would not run in 2015 and that whatever you cannot do in four years you would never be able to do in 100 years. But recently you contradicted yourself, saying four years are not enough for any president to make an impact? When did you realize that four years are not enough? And why this apparent self-contradiction?

7) The Federal Government said the military would not be available to provide security for the postponed election. How did we come to see election security more a responsibility for the military than the police, para-military and other arms of the security agencies?

cool Mr. President, you said during your campaign in Lagos that militant group, MEND, wanted to assassinate you in 2010. This is contrary to what you said in 2010 after the bombing in Abuja, when you defended the group, saying it is not a terrorist organization. At what point did you realize that the group wanted to assassinate you? And why did you defend the group in 2010 even when investigations had not been done on the bombing incident?

9) Your estranged godfather, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Tuesday formally endorsed your opponent, Muhammadu Buhari. How did the relationship between both of you degenerate to this extent? What really went wrong between you and him?

10)Your administration has now promised to flush out Boko Haram from the North-East in six weeks so elections could hold in all parts of the country. One of our readers requested us to ask you why you are now more committed to defeating Boko Haram for election sake. He wants to know why you could not do that in six years for the sake of fellow Nigerians that were being killed, maimed and displaced?
Politics / Buhari Meets Catholic Bishops In Abuja, says He Doesn't Have Any Religious Agenda by olaoluwajosh: 11:00am On Feb 12, 2015
Buhari's speech below...

As our nation approaches perhaps the most crucial election in our history, all true patriots are called to deeper reflection of the basic ingredients that bind the nation together- our common freedom, peace and unity. This reflection is even more relevant in the face of the illegal postponement of the general elections- a feat achieved through various sinister ploys and with the sole aim of avoiding the will and verdict of the people. In all of these, I feel the urgeto communicate some of my personal vision and thoughts to the people of our great country, especially on the question of religion, a sensitive matter for many citizens that has become the most frequently used tool by the ruling party. This affordsme an opportunity to give my response to the ruling party’s false propaganda and lies against my person.

Needless to say, we must at all times hold the unity, peace and progress of our dear nation paramount and above all other considerations, especially politics. Those who deliberately disseminate divisive disinformation and attempt to stoke primordial sentiments using religion or ethnicity and create fear in the minds of our people fail the standard of patriotism this nation demands of them and deserves from them. The ruling government and PDP have adopted this sad divisive and false narrative as their strategy to prevent the inevitable change that our country and people desire and require. And they have succeeded in making some of us victims of the tales which they invent, propagate and sell as gospel truth to gullible listeners, while it is all nothing but a tissue of lies.

I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what our detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been. In all my life, I have never supported extremism of any kind, and nowhere in my record of service to this nation can this false toga, political opponents have tried so hard to put on me, be substantiated. Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I feel extremely sad that I have to give this type of assurance.
My background is in the army, and there is no doubt that the military is the most integrated pan-Nigerian institution. And even today, the military is one of the institutions that represents the pride of our nation’s possibilities in unity. Compatriots from every corner of this country come together, work and live together, entrust their lives to each other and integrate their families. It is a military where many of my dearest friends, from all faiths and parts of the country, lost their lives defending the unity of our nation. That was the military I served in, and in that military it was impossible to be a bigot.
For me, the issue of religion was, and should always, be a matter of personal conviction. This personal conviction approach to religion has defined my work and interactions all my life, including my tenure in office as military Head of State. The religion of all those I worked with was never a factor in their progress or in what happened to them. All that mattered then, and should still matter today, are competence, integrity and readiness to be fair to all.

I was recently informed that we had a balanced cabinet with key positions such as Finance, Energy and Defence occupied by Christians. In addition, 11 of the 19 governors I appointed were Christians. My most memorable recollections of subordinate service was under Christian bosses, the finest our country had then, and among the most respected today. Indeed one of the best appraisals I received in the course of my military career was from General T.Y Danjuma.

Government has no business preferring one religion to the other. The role of government is to protect lives and properties of citizens and to respect and protect their constitutional rights. One critical freedom that every government must strive to protect is the liberty for citizens to exercise their respective faiths, Christians and Muslims or others, in a lawful manner without fear or hindrance and to prosecute those who use religion as an excuse to destroy homes, schools and places of worship. When governments fail in that duty, they must then assist in the rebuilding of structures including destroyed places of worship and giving full restitution for lost property. We, Nigerians, are a religious people, and the burning of places of worship constitutes one of the vilest forms of abomination to all those who believe in God. It is the duty of governments to protect this important sensitivity.

Let me state this categorically, that I, MuhammaduBuhari, as an individual, and as president of this great country by the grace of God, given the opportunity to serve, have no personal religious agenda. And I will not entertain, consider or promote the religious agenda of anyone. I will not condone any initiative that seeks to promote one religion over the other. Neither I, nor my party, or any member of my team has any desire or plan to Islamize or Christianize Nigeria or support anyone with such intention.

Although I am a practising Muslim, and I have been so all my life, I have never belonged to, nor shared the views of, any extremist group. I am not even a cleric. I believe that religion is personal and private. Many of the people close to me are not of my religion. My cook and driver for 20 years are Christians, Most of my bodyguards are Christians. Some were killed while protecting me in the terrorist attack on my convoy in Kaduna. If I have not Islamized these people who serve under me, how will I Islamize the likes of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Ogbonnaya Onu, Governors RochasOkorocha, Kayode Fayemi, Rotimi Amaechi or Professor Yemi Osinbajo who is a senior advocate of Nigeria and a pastor? Or how will I Islamize Nigeria?

Our constitution, which in many respects, is similar to the American constitution does not permit a state religion. The Sharia identified in the constitution is almost synonymous with customary law. It is only applicable in matters of personal status such as marriage, divorce and inheritance. This has been the case since the 1979 constitution. Just as no one can make any customary or any other religious law the law of Nigeria, so Sharia cannot therefore be the law of Nigeria.
My record is evidence of this strongly held belief. Before my tenure, the deadly and violent extremist radical sect, Maitasine carried out terrorist activities in the north, especially Kano; When it erupted again in Yola, during my tenure, I took direct command, and personally led the successful effort to eradicate the threat to our country. Similarly, when some Chadian insurgents attempted to occupy Nigerian territory, I led the military confrontation that eliminated the threat.
For all purposes, we must all learn to live together as brothers and sisters, because the problems that bedevil our nation do not discriminate based on religion or ethnicity. Poverty and hunger do not know or respect religion or creed. When a bomb explodes in a market, it kills and maims without regard for religion or ethnicity. The millions of the unemployed youth of our country cut across all tribes and religions.

Wicked propagandists continue to spread vicious lies about me for political gain, including claiming that I once asked Muslims not to vote for Christians. This must be the height of absurdity. How could I ever say that, when whoever voted for me would be voting for the Christian running with me on the same ticket? And how could I ever say that of Christians when my own holy book, the Qur’an, tells me that in the entire world those that are nearest in love to me are those who believe in Jesus Christ [AS]? I ask, who, intending to win any election, ever does that? How can I choose southern Christian running mates [Chuba Okadigbo of blessed memory, Pastor Tunde Bakare and Pastor YemiOsinbajo] and with them by my side make such silly utterances?

Because they have no record, they must seek to destroy our own; and because they have no integrity, they feel they must impugn our own.

We must reject those who propagate hatred, ethnicity, divisiveness, sectionalism or seek to manipulate our religious differences in such cynical fashion. On our part, we will remain undeterred: our commitment is to bring about change in the way we live and think and work in this nation; and our goal is to ensure a decent existence for all. And, by the Grace of God, that is what we will do—we will remain true to our commitment and we will achieve our goal.
May God bless Nigeria and its people for all time.
General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR

Politics / 100 Days In Office: Fayose Admits Owing Ekiti Workers N7.5bn by olaoluwajosh: 10:49am On Jan 28, 2015
Ado Ekiti—Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayo Fayose has lamented that the state government needed the sum of N7.5 billion to settle arrears of entitlements of public servants in the state.
He admitted that he sometimes does not know where to start which gives him sleepless nights.
The governor was speaking in Ado Ekiti yesterday while inaugurating some projects to mark his 100 days in office.
According to him, the entitlements included August and September 2014 salaries of some workers, subventions due to state-owned institutions, leave bonus among others.
Fayose declared that despite the challenges and commitments that he would strive to execute some projects and pay salaries promptly.
“We have about N7.8 billion obligation to workers in the state. The obligations were left behind by the former administration, which include over N2 billion as leave bonus to workers, over N1 billion as deductions from workers’ salaries that the former administration did no remit.
“August and September 2014 salaries they did not pay some workers amounting to over N2 billion. Subventions to tertiary institutions which is over N2 billion as well.
“I don’t know where to start sometimes I cannot sleep. We did not inherit anything tangible from the former administration.
“ The six months’ moratorium from banks that we got, will lapse in two months and when that happens, banks will be deducting N780 million monthly to service the over N31 billion loans the former administration left behind.
“Also, N800 million is deducted from our statutory allocation monthly to service the N25 billion bond that they took. We have approached four banks to borrow us money to pay at least one month out of the two months salaries owed some workers. But essential things must be done. I call for understanding from people and I am committed to making life better for the people,” the governor said.
The governor further noted that paying workers’ salaries promptly had become a cardinal point of his administration, given the poor state of the economy and finances of the state.
The governor noted that the challenges met in office would never be an excuse for him not to perform his duties and fulfil his electoral promises.
Among the projects lined up for inauguration were the rehabilitated Matthew Road, Ado-Ekiti, Bisi Market, Awedele Road, Ado-Ekiti, drainages along Ajilosun Road, Ado-Ekiti.
Others are 12 ambulances, 19 patrol vans for security agencies, 20 motorbikes, three tractors and 12 waste vehicles.

Politics / Hausa In Certificate Exams In 1961—cambridge Exam Syndicate States by olaoluwajosh: 3:26pm On Jan 23, 2015
With opponents of presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, still questioning the authenticity of a secondary school certificate that was released a few days ago, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), now known as Cambridge Assessment, has confirmed that Hausa language was one of the set subjects offered in 1961.

Cambridge Assessment made the disclosure in response to an email inquiry asking the agency to authenticate the secondary school certificate result for Mr. Buhari that was released by Government College Katsina. In an email to our correspondent, Cambridge Assessment declined to disclose the APC candidate’s personal records, stating that the agency responds only to requests that emanate directly from exam candidates. “This is in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and section 40 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000,” the agency explained.

Cambridge Assessment was responsible for conducting secondary school leaving certificate exams in the 1960s. The agency was the precursor of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) that today awards the General Certificate of Education to students who pass their secondary school certificate exams.

SaharaReporters had written to Cambridge Assessment amid allegations and insinuations by hordes of Mr. Buhari’s critics, including officials of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and online commentators, that the certificate results released by the APC presidential candidate were questionable. Since Mr. Buhari asked his secondary school to release his results to the public early this week, several persons, including one A.A. Adeyinka, a professor of educational foundations at the University of Ilorin, had claimed that Hausa was not offered as a subject in WASC exams until the 1970s.

In their email to SaharaReporters, Cambridge Assessment made it clear that “Hausa” was offered as a subject in their exams in 1961. The agency’s statement “confirmed that, according to the Regulations for 1961, African language papers, including those for Hausa, were set for the West African School Certificate.”

Politics / President Jonathan Didn’t Complete His Phd, Buhari Will Win This Election- OBJ by olaoluwajosh: 1:00pm On Jan 22, 2015
Former Nigeria President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has predicted that the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari will be the next Nigerian President which why those who are afraid of him are creating so many obstacles on his way, Saying “a general is always a general.

Obasanjo, who was reacting to the controversies generated over the school certificate of General Buhari said: “I see Buhari as the next President and Jonathan is aware of that, and that is the reason they are hitting him everywhere to put confusion in his camp. But a General is always a General… “

The former President said the truth of the matter is that Jonathan is aware that Buhari is qualified to contest for President election but that “some hawks with Jonathan do not want him to contest because they believed that he will win and come for them.

“The issue (of Buhari’s certificate) came up in 2007, and we investigated and found out that his WASEC is with the military and that was why he was allowed to contest in 2007. Buhari cannot listen to anyone about his certificates because as a General of Nigeria Army, he will speak when he chooses, not by Femi Fani Kayode and Okupe asking him.

Fayose and other corrupt people including Kashamu do not want Buhari because of his anti-corruption slogan.

“Even Jonathan did not finish his PhD course but when it was presented we stated that, it does not matter but many people do not know because it was PDP thing.”

Politics / PDP Lawyers To Party: You Can’t Stop Buhari In Court by olaoluwajosh: 2:28pm On Jan 21, 2015
He got WASC in 1961, says army
Don’t destroy military, APC warns PDP
LEGAL experts have advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to launch a legal battle over Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s certificates.
Gen. Buhari is the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 14 election.
The PDP’s plan, The Nation learnt, is to go to court in a bid to stop Gen. Buhari on the ground that his certificates are not with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The army said yesterday that Gen. Buhari obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961. But, said the army, the original copies of his certificates could not be found in his file.
It was also learnt that apart from the court, INEC can also determine Gen. Buhari’s fate.
If in the opinion of INEC Gen. Buhari can contest, no one can stop the APC candidate, lawyers said.
The PDP leadership and some Presidency officials sought legal advice on how to get Gen. Buhari disqualified, a source told The Nation, pleading not to be named because of what he described as the “sensitivity” of the matter.
But they were shocked to learn that it was all a wild goose chase.
The legal advice made available to the party indicated that Gen. Buhari cannot be stopped because Section 318 of the 1999 says any candidate can contest for elective office with a minimum of school certificate or its equivalent.
The section also does not say a candidate must pass or fail the school certificate examination or its equivalent, which could be a primary school certificate or the ability to read or write in English.
Also, if a candidate has served in the public sector for up to 10 years, this could be the equivalent of a school certificate.
A highly-placed source said: “The legal advice sought by PDP has confirmed that even if the party goes to court, it cannot stop Buhari. The party is in a state of confusion because it has to face the electoral battle with APC.
The 1999 Constitution is explicit in its interpretation of Section 131 of the 1999 Constitution by Section 318.
Section 131 states: “A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if (a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth; (b) he has attained the age of forty (40) years; (c )he is a member of a political party; and (d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.
“In Section 318, School certificate or equivalent means (a) a Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent, or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate, the City and Guilds Certificate; or (b) education up to Secondary School Certificate level; or
“(c) Primary Six School Leaving Certificate or its equivalent and (i) service in the public or private sector in the Federation in any capacity acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) for a minimum of 10 years; and
“(ii) attendance at courses and training in such institutions as may be acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission for periods totalling up to a minimum of one year, and
“(iii) the ability to read, write, understand and communicate in the English Language to the satisfaction of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); and
“(d) Any other qualification acceptable by INEC.”
Another source said the PDP has realized its folly because it did not seek legal opinion before raising false alarms that Gen. Buhari is unqualified to contest.
The source added: “The PDP leaders have realised that all their alarms over Gen. Buhari’s certificate amounted to nothing.
“Out of shame, they have decided to keep their findings under wraps.”
Another reliable source in PDP said: “We have been briefed that there is little we can do to stop Gen. Buhari.”
In Abuja, the Army on former Head of State Gen. Mohammadu Buhari’s academic records, saying the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate obtained the West African School certificate (WASC) in 1961.
The Army however added that the original copy, Certified True Copy, or statement of Buhari’s WASC result could not be found in his file.
Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Olajide Laleye who who addressed a press conference at the Army Headquarters said:
“Records available indicate that Major General Muhammadu Buhari applied to join the military as a Form Six student of the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina on October 18, 1961.
“His application was duly endorsed by the principal of the school, who also wrote a report on him and recommended him to be suitable for military commission. It is a practice in the Nigerian Army that before candidates are shortlisted for commissioning into the officers’ cadre of the Service, the Selection Board verifies the original copies of credentials that are presented.
“However, there is no available record to show that this process was followed in the 1960s. Nevertheless, the entry made on the NA Form 199A at the point of documentation after commission as an officer indicated that the former Head of State obtained the West African School Certificate in 1961 with credits in relevant subjects.”
He listed the subjects to include: English Language, Geography, History, Health Science, Hausa and English Literature.
