Eromosele Abiodun In a bid to find a lasting solution to the Apapa gridlock, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has concluded plan to implement call-up system for trucks entering the ports for goods delivery from August this year. For the call-up system to be effective, THISDAY learnt that officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) may vacate the Lilypond terminal for the facility to be converted to a park for trucks. The Lilypond terminal based in Ijora Lagos is a dry port with a full-fledged command of customs and other security agencies. THISDAY checks revealed that the call-up-system would have taken off before now, but for the need to protect the shoreline at the Tin Can Island port area. NPA’s General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communication, Adams Jatto, confirmed the plan when he told journalists in Lagos that the system would go a long way in addressing the traffic gridlock in Apapa. According to Jatto, “We have concluded the procurement process to be able to engage our investors to manage the truck park. So with this, I believe we should be able to have something on ground for people to be proud of. Call-up system is not just the areas we are looking at, for us to ease the congestion along ports access roads. “It is a kind of temporary measure for us to ensure that we have a free flow on the axis that lead to the ports. The call-up system is for us to be able to have truck parks along ports area and some of the truck owners have assured us that they have truck parks, where they can park their trucks. “A call-up system is to ensure that in each of the areas where there are truck parks, the trucks are there and when it is time for them to come to the ports, we have to adopt the call-up system to call them. On the basis of this, we will be able to streamline the trucks coming into the ports, to ease congestion.” Jatto said the management of NPA led by Bala-Usman has always been desirous to address issues of the port access roads in Apapa, through sustainable road construction. “A truck terminal park had been constructed at Tin-Can Island port, but the shoreline protection was not done. The Federal Ministry of Works had re-awarded the contract for completion. Our Managing Director/CEO, Ms Hadiza Bala-Usman had taken a bold step to ensure that the truck terminal will be managed by Public Private Partnership (PPP). “That is where we are having real automation of call-up system. The management of NPA is working toward ensuring that Lillypond terminal is converted to a truck transit park for easy flow of traffic, along ports access road in Lagos,” he stated. He said that with the construction of the Lagos Port Complex road under short term, the medium term plan would be to construct the Apapa Creek Road up to Tin-Can Island Port and Mile-2. The road, he said, would be constructed from Mile 2 to Oworonsoki, adding that the construction would be handled by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing. Meanwhile, THISDAY learnt that the customs officers at the facility will be asked to leave, adding that management of the service might be forced to redeploy its personnel to various commands under zone A. A source who did not want his name in print, disclosed that letters have been written to the Area Controller of Lilypond Command over the development. Nigerian exporters had recently raised the alarm that cashew nuts valued at $300 million have been trapped at the Lagos Ports and called on the federal government to come to their aid by addressing the challenges of congestion and inefficiency at Lagos’ ports, which have affected exports. The exporters said gridlock and inefficiency at the ports of Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, delayed shipment of 50,000 tonnes of cashew nuts and is threatening this year’s output as traders are cash-strapped.https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2019/04/12/npa-to-implement-call-up-system-to-end-apapa-gridlock/ |
Over the years, plenty of kudos have been directed at the people at the helms of big tech companies. Until recent hard times, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Apple’s Tim Cook and Alphabet’s Sergey Brin, among others, have been fawned over by a compliant press and portrayed as visionaries and great leaders. But the world’s best tech leader hasn’t been lionized, not even now that the tech giant he has guided for almost five years remains relatively stable amid jumpy markets. I’m talking about Microsoft’s unassuming CEO, Satya Nadella, who as often as not has been considered merely a steady, somewhat boring functionary. Take a look, though, at what he has done at the company through 2018. He has successfully turned Microsoft from a plodding, increasingly irrelevant company into a tech powerhouse that’s surprisingly nimble and more willing to change course than its competitors. To fully recognize how much Nadella has transformed Microsoft, look back to February 2014, when he took over as CEO from Steve Ballmer. He was saddled with Ballmer’s decision to buy Nokia for $7.2 billion to prop up a failing Windows Phone business — as well as the decision to pour immense amounts of money and time into a mobile operating system that no one wanted to use. [ Further reading: Windows 10 October 2018 update: Key enterprise features ] Less than a year and a half before that, the company had released Window 8, one of the worst versions of Windows ever built. Given the pace of change in the tech world, it’s easy to forget how big a problem that was a few short years ago. Windows was still Microsoft’s cash cow, seen as the core of the company. Fatefully, Ballmer’s Microsoft had borrowed elements of Windows Phone’s Metro UI, but the way that Windows 8 was most like Windows Phone was that hardly anyone wanted to use it. At the same time as the Windows 8 rollout, Microsoft had introduced the Surface tablet, which was widely derided as overpriced, underpowered and serving little purpose. The company culture had stagnated, clinging to past days of Microsoft glory (and antitrust ignominy). Ballmer’s arrogant belief that Microsoft could solve any problem by using Windows as a battering ram still ruled. Nadella had a lot to prove to employees, because he was only the third Microsoft CEO since the company’s founding in 1975 — and the first who hadn’t been associated with the company’s one-time dominance of the tech world. [ Got a spare hour? Take this online course and learn how to install and configure Windows 10 with the options you need. ] Nice guy, said the business press, one who was cloud-savvy and steeped in both tech and business experience. But no one was expecting to pile accolades upon his head any time soon. By any measure, though, Nadella has been a roaring success. He took the hard choice to kill off Windows Phone (hard because no one takes such a massive write-off lightly), finally freeing the company from throwing billions of dollars down a rathole. Not only did that save Microsoft money, but it also allowed the company to use its developer resources for technologies more important to its success. Less unexpectedly, he made the cloud central to Microsoft’s business, but the extent to which he let the cloud focus overtake the company’s Windows-centric focus was breathtaking, given the sacrosanct status the OS had always enjoyed. That has paid off big time. Microsoft is now a leader in cloud computing. The company’s commercial cloud revenue was $8.5 billion for the first quarter of 2019, up 47% compared to a year previous. And that understates the way in which the cloud permeates the company’s offerings. Office has been turned into primarily a cloud-based subscription service, and business is booming as a result. Windows has become, to a certain extent, cloud-based as well, because it is now delivered and updated via the cloud. Think of it as Windows as a service. Meanwhile, Nadella has turned the Surface into a hit by changing its design and focus. Today, Surface hardware is a billion-dollar business, something that was unthinkable when the poorly designed tablet was first rolled out. Nadella has been willing to adapt to a changing world and scale back Microsoft’s investments in high-profile products that aren’t panning out — something Ballmer never did. So he’s thrown in the towel on trying to get Cortana to compete with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home. Instead, Cortana will use its smarts behind the scenes to create ways to make Microsoft’s other products more useful. Under Nadella, Microsoft has accepted open-source software and begun to work with it — anathema to Gates and Ballmer. The company’s popular SQL Server database, for example, runs on Linux. Here’s how John “JG” Chirapurath, a general manager with Microsoft, explains why the company decided to do that: “To keep flexibility and choice is absolutely critical. We can’t walk into a customer today and offer them a data platform that exclusively works with Windows or, say, C#. We’ve got to go in there and say, can we meet you on your terms, and what does that look like?” In pre-Nadella days, that would have been seen as apostasy. The result of all this? Under Ballmer, Microsoft’s stock had stagnated. It has nearly tripled since Nadella took over, from $37 to around $100 now, depending on the day. Even during the December market crash, the stock held much of its value. And during a brief period in November 2018, Microsoft became the world’s most valuable company, as its stock price rose and Apple’s dropped. Anyone who was really paying attention when Nadella took over as CEO shouldn’t be surprised by any of this. According to CNBC, Microsoft Chairman John Thompson said at an event this summer hosted by Lightspeed Venture Partners that in Nadella’s first public appearance in 2014 as Microsoft CEO, “He made a pronouncement on day one — the world is about cloud first, mobile first. He never mentioned Windows one time. … What he was telling the world was we at Microsoft have to be ready to embrace the cloud, and we at Microsoft have to be more about our technology running on all platforms." Nadella has delivered on all that, and more. So you may not hear Nadella make grand public pronouncements. He’s not being hailed as a visionary. But while CEOs at other big tech courses stumble, Nadella has crafted and overseen Microsoft’s transition from an also-ran to a front-runner. Even better times might be ahead.https://www.computerworld.com/article/3331853/the-tech-world-s-best-ceo-microsoft-s-nadella-hands-down.html |
Nigerian senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, who represents Bayelsa East Senatorial District, has taken to his Twitter page to share two of the bills he recently proposed before the Senate. One of the bills he proposed is the Electric Car Bill, which is basically seeking that the National Assembly approves the use of electric cars in Nigeria. The reason for the bill According to Bruce, the reason for proposing the bill is to help Nigeria actualise a clean energy policy, encourage the use of modern technology, de-emphasise on oil consumption, and also reduce air pollution. Nigerians reaction to the bill Interestingly, some Nigerians on Twitter “dragged” the senator because they felt that his proposed bill is a misplaced priority. Some people specifically questioned the need for electric cars in a country that cannot boast of 24 hours electricity supply. https://nairametrics.com/2019/04/11/ben-bruce-introduces-electric-car-bill-to-the-senate/ Ben Murray-Bruce ✔ @benmurraybruce · 10 Apr 2019 Replying to @benmurraybruce The Objectives of this Act are to; (a) Comply with the clean energy policy. Jolomi Ukubeyinje @africanchild01 Questions; how do we use electric cars in a country that bad drainage and roads causes flooding ? 02:26 - 11 Apr 2019 Twitter Ads information and privacy See Jolomi Ukubeyinje's other Tweets Moving forward In as much electric cars are not exactly what many Nigerians need at the moment, it is important to consider the fact that Senator Bruce might be finding solutions to future problems. Many countries are discovering crude oil, even as the world-wide usage of electric cars keeps rising. Nigerians will, therefore, have to find an alternative to their daily use of oil. Doing this will also help the country contribute to the fight against climate change. It should be noted that some Nigerians on Twitter also agreed with his idea, arguing that it’s time the country starts thinking about the future, along with other countries who are already using technology to their advantage. Triumph of the Spirit™ @UKmichels · 10 Apr 2019 Replying to @benmurraybruce Irrelevant Bill Sir ~ Electricity must be constant and runs 24 hour before talking about a luxury as electric ⚡️ cars~ Dannessy @Dann_10 I beg to differ, I think the bill is worth passing..if we don't start thinking in this direction, the world would leave us behind b4 we know it & our oil will be obsolete. Gas is the way forward + clean generated energy is where the world is tilting to, because of Climate Change. 16:46 - 10 Apr 2019 Twitter Ads information and privacy See Dannessy's other Tweets Other countries are doing it According to reports, Norway is introducing zero-emission cars in their roads by 2025. It is also worthy to note that electronic vehicle sales in Norway in March outstripped sales of gasoline and diesel cars combined. This development confirms the Nordic country’s undisputed global leadership in the EV market. It also sets it on the road to achieving its national goal of having all cars sold by 2025 be zero emission. Other countries such as China have also been making effort to introduce more electric cars onto their roads. Therefore, it’s about time Nigeria does same. |
