PoliticsGovernment Spends N40,000 To N50,000 Per Covid-19 Test, Lagos Commissioner For H by olasco2035(op): 9:30pm On May 21, 2020
os State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, has said that the state government spends about N40,000 to N50,000 per COVID-19 test.

Abayomi said this while updating the public on efforts put in place by the government to stop the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

He said, “Regarding the testing, we so far have performed 16,000 tests in Lagos, which is much higher than anywhere else in Nigeria, and we’re planning to continue to test up to about a thousand tests a day.

“So, in the next month or two, we’re going to be ramping up our capacity to test. How much does it cost to test? Well, for now, the government is providing testing free of charge and the government pays about N40,000 to N50,000 per test.

“But to ramp up our testing, we’re going to try and use some means of subsidising those tests, either through insurance or through some contributions from donors or from developmental partners to help us to subsidise the tests.

“For now, the state government is providing COVID-19 testing free of charge and all citizens who need to be tested for COVID-19 because they are not feeling well, or they’ve had a close contact, can get that test free of charge at any of our COVID-19 testing sites in the four laboratories.”

PoliticsKano Civil Servants Kick As Government Slashes Salaries by olasco2035(op): 8:50pm On May 21, 2020
Civil servants in Kano State have expressed anger after the state government slashed their May salaries in what appeared to be an effect of the COVID-19 crisis.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had earlier announced a 50 per cent slash in the salaries of political officeholders. No such announcement was made for civil servants.

The civil servants are lamenting the reduction, more so that there was no prior notice from the state government that their pay too would be cut.

The civil servants who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES asked not to be named for fear of victimisation.

A state counsel in the state ministry of justice told PREMIUM TIMES that about N20,000 was deducted from her May salary.

Also a level 12 officer in one of the state-owned media houses said her own was short by about N10,000.

She said it appeared that the government has reverted to the old salary structure based on N18,000 minimum wage, instead of the current N30,000 minimum wage.

A grade level 7 classroom teacher in one of the public schools told Kano Focus that she received N34,589.92 instead of N45,121,.99 as her May Salary.

She lamented that the salary slash has affected her Sallah preparations.

Another school teacher also said N10,000 was deducted from his salary.

The story is also the same with workers in the state ministry of health as well as the academic staff of state-owned tertiary institutions.

A lecturer at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education said N7,000 was cut from her salary while a level 13 medical laboratory scientist in the Hospitals Management Board said N16,000 was deducted from her May salary.

When contacted, the state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Kabiru Minjibir, said the union was not consulted before the salary deduction, and will soon call an emergency meeting for the next line of action.

The spokesperson of the governor, Salihu Yakasai, and that of state head of service, Bintu Yakasai, did not respond to telephone calls from the reporter as at the time of this report.

HealthKano COVID19 Centre Closed Indefinitely For Fumigation After Staff Test Positive by olasco2035(op): 7:39pm On Apr 25, 2020
The head of COVID-19 testing centre in Kano, Nasiru Magaji, on Saturday said there is no definite date for resuming the test in Kano.

He told PREMIUM TIMES that although the laboratory was opened on Friday, they are yet to commence treating samples.

“We have opened the lab since yesterday (Friday), but you can’t run samples just like that when you open the lab. You have to do a lot of things. So, we are doing those things up (till) now,” he said.

Commenting on when they would resume testing, Mr Magaji said, “We don’t know until we finish everything. In a lab like that, you have to do all the safety procedures before you start exposing yourself.

PREMIUM TIMES, on Wednesday, reported how a member of Kano Task Force on COVID-19, Isa Abubakar, said the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control‘s COVID-19 testing centre in Kano suspended its operation due to shortage of testing kits.

On Thursday, Health Minister Osagie Ehanire said the centre was temporarily closed because some staff of the laboratory were reportedly infected with COVID-19. He also added that the centre ran short of some testing reagents.

But Mr Magaji said the laboratory was closed for routine fumigation which would last 48 hours.

For four consecutive days, Kano has not featured in NCDC’s daily update on COVID-19.

Nigeria’s cases rose to 1,095 with Kano recording 73 as of Friday night, according to the NCDC.

The COVID-19 testing centre, domiciled at Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, hosts many northern states’ suspected cases.

Experts say testing capacity is a major step in fighting the spread of coronavirus.

The challenge faced in Kano typifies the challenge of testing Nigeria has faced since the first case of the disease was detected in the country in February. About 10,000 people have been tested so far, across the country, less than a quarter of the number tested in smaller African countries like Ghana and South Africa.

“We are isolating the person already and the blood sample will be taken to Lagos first tomorrow ( Thursday) morning.
