Five gunmen, suspected to be ritualists on Sunday invaded the government hospital in Ado-Ekiti, demanding for new born babies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the gunmen who were said to be numbering about five, arrived at the hospital at about 1:00 a.m. demanding for a day old babies, and beating up staff who could not give satisfactory answer.

A senior health officer, who pleaded anonymity, said that the armed men invaded the hospital located along Irona area at about 1:00 a.m. and suddenly began molesting medical officials on night duty.

According to the officer, the invaders, who were fully armed, demanded for the whereabouts of a particular baby, said to have been delivered earlier in the day.

“They got more annoyed when they were told that no baby was available in the hospital as at the time they came, it angered then the more and they went berserk,’’ the officer said.

This development, NAN learnt angered the men who beat up the hospital staff and injured some of them.

“As a senior person on duty, I tried to convince them that all new born babies have been discharged from the centre in the last couple of days, but they refused to be convinced.

“This angered them the more and they descended on the staff beating us, some of them were busy ransacking the place in search of babies,’’ the source said.

When contacted, the Chairman of Ado Local Government, Mr Tope Olanipekun confirmed the incident, saying “this is a new twist to crime in the area’’.

Olanipekun, who claimed to have visited the hospital to see things for himself, described the incident as “highest point of callousness on the part of the perpetrators.’’

“As I speak, the incident actually happened and I want to assure you that we are taking step to forestall a recurrence.’’

The chairman said that he had already ordered that night duty be suspended in all the hospitals in the council, pending when tight security measures, which would include fencing of all health centres will be done.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Victor Babayemi, ASP, who was surprised at the development, however said the incident was yet to be reported to the police command.

Victims of the electrocution at Oniwaya
Junction, Agege
According to PUNCH report, on
Wednesday, October 16, a day after
Muslim folks celebrated Sallah, tragedy
struck at Oniwaya Junction, Agege,
Lagos, as a high tension cable
electrocuted four people in the area.
A woman, identified as Mrs.
Oluwajedalo but popularly called Iya
Fathia, survived the electrocution but
lost his three-year-old son, Ayomide,
who ran towards her and embraced her
as electric shock overtook her.
The incident was still a hot topic of
discussion when Saturday PUNCH
visited the area on Tuesday as some
people were seen discussing it in the
front of house Number 88, Oniwaya
Road, where the incident occurred.
There is a transformer located at
Oniwaya Junction. House no 88 is just
two houses away from the transformer.
A resident of the house, Mr. James
Eboh, promptly pointed to a paper on a
wall, a poster of the four victims of the
electrocution – Ayomide Oluwajedalo
(3), Sunday Hisaun (25), Samson
Akinrinsoye (25) and Matthew (37).
Eboh shook his head and said the
three-year-old victim should not have
died.
He said:
The incident occurred around 8pm.
There was a spark on the transformer
over there. As we heard the spark,
everybody scampered for safety
because it had happened before. A
cable detached from the transformer as
the spark went off. It fell on this shop
here (in the front of No 88). Iya Fathia
moved towards the shop to warn the
shop owner, who was inside at the
time. But she stepped on a metal on
which the shop was built.
As the electric shock went through her
body, she was shaking violently.
Ayomide who sighted her mother at
the entrance of the house, ran towards
her and embraced her. He died on the
spot. But his mother survived.
I am the closest friend of Iya Fathia
(Ayomide’s mother) in this house. I was
one of those who took her to a hospital
in Egbeda. It is just sad because the
woman is not sane at the moment.
Asked how Mrs. Oluwajedalo could be
located, Eboh said her family had
requested for her discharge at the
hospital in Egbeda where she was
undergoing treatment and taken her to
Ijebu-Ode.
“The woman was still in shock and she
did not seem to be improving. The
family had spent a lot on her
treatment. They decided to move her to
Ijebu-Ode because the cost was
becoming unbearable for them. The
last time I spoke with her in Egbeda,
she was not sounding normal. She was
only saying, ‘My son is not dead! My
son is okay! My son is not dead”, Eboh
said.
He explained that the young victim had
been buried at the Jafojo Cemetery.
Abiola Oladimeji, who was in his shop
when the high tension cable fell on it,
said he survived by divine grace. “I was
told Iya Fathia was coming to alert us
when she was electrocuted. It is just
unfortunate”, he said.
It was a wonder that Oladimeji was not
electrocuted because his shop on which
the cable fell is a moveable metal
container.
When Saturday PUNCH got to the scene
on Tuesday, the cable that caused the
electrocution had been removed. It is
common to see high tension cables
hanging precariously over residential
areas in Lagos.

Sudan-born Khalid Abdullah cornered a
stranger in an alley and held a blade to
her neck in a jealousy fueled assault,
sparked by seeing his own girlfriend
with another man.
The victim had been walking to work at
5:30am when Abdullah launched the
terrifying attack in April this year. He
told the woman, in her 30s, that he
‘needed s*x’ before putting his hand
over her mouth and telling her to keep
quiet.
But Abdullah, 35, was unable to carry
out the r*pe and told her: ‘It’s my first
time, I’m sorry.’
He offered the terrified woman his
phone and said: ‘Call the police, you
can call the police, call the police now.’
The woman fled but Abdullah caught
her and told her he ‘wanted to kill all
women’ after catching his girlfriend
being unfaithful.
She managed to reach her home in
Peterborough, and raised the alarm.
Abdullah was later identified through
CCTV.
He was convicted of attempted r*pe
after a week-long trial at Peterborough
Crown Court.
Judge Nic Madge jailed him for eight
years and described the attack as
‘every woman’s worst nightmare’.
He told him: ‘Whether due to the
amount you had drunk or for some
other reason, you were not successful
in having s*xual intercourse, clearly
that was your intention.
‘You did not succeed in penetrating her
and she did not suffer any physical
injuries, but this was an absolutely
terrifying experience.
‘It was every woman’s worst
nightmare. The victim was terrified
because of your anger and
unpredictability.’
Detective Constable Louise Spinks said:
‘Abdullah is clearly a dangerous
individual and we are pleased he is now
behind bars for a significant period of
time.’

A 34-year-old man, Omowuyi Kelvin, was arraigned by the Nigerian police in Lagos on Wednesday over alleged molest$rappe of a 25-year old girl he met on Facebook.

Kelvin, who was charged before an Isheri Magistrates’ Court, lives at Shangisha, a suburb of Lagos.

He is facing a two-count charge of rape and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the accused committed the offences at 8.00p.m., on 15 October at his residence.

“The accused invited his victim all the way from Benin to Lagos.

“On arrival, the accused unlawfully detained her for five days in a room, had carnal knowledge of her and stripped her of N5,000, among other valuables,” he said.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 258 provides for life imprisonment for rape, while Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for theft.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

Senior Magistrate Adejumoke Olagbegi-Adelabu granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till to 27 October for substantive trial.

On 22 July, 2012, Cynthia Osokogwu, a post-graduate student of Nasarawa State University and a clothing retailer was murdered in Lagos by friends she met on Facebook.

They lured her to a hotel in FESTAC Town, drugged and raped her before she was murdered.
