Hopes are high within the ranks of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, as the union is set for a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan tomorrow that the two parties will arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to the four months old strike which has paralysed the nation’s university education.

The union however expect the solution to be within the context of the implementation of the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MOU and the recommendations of the Needs Assessment Report, warning that any proposal by the Government would be based on a clear acceptance of a framework for the implementation of the 2009 agreement.
The union stated clearly that any imposition will not present a solution to the current crisis.

In a statement by Dr. Uzochukwu Onyebinama, Chairperson ASUU, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia state, ASUU urged the President “to be guided by the principle of honouring agreements in the interest of justice and industrial harmony in the country”.

“As the National leadership of our union, the Academic Staff Union of Universities meet with his Excellency, President Goodluck Jonathan, tomorrow 4th November 2013 [tomorrow], we hope that the meeting will be a dialogue that will lead to a mutually acceptable fair and far reaching solution within the context of the implementation of the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MOU and the recommendations of the Needs Assessment Report.
“Any proposal by government should be based on a clear acceptance of a framework for the implementation of the 2009 agreement. Any imposition will not present a solution to the current crisis.

“We therefore call on the President and Commander- in- chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to be guided by the principle of honouring agreements in the interest of justice and industrial harmony in the country”, the statement said.

I would have enlisted as my little quota but the date ish is disturbing. If ASUU strike is to end by Dec and we resume by Jan. And you guys are planning for a debate by march. I'm sure my school's exam wil be by April. So, how about that? Even if the strike ends today, Exams will be March/April. AND you want us guys to come here and keep checking for info everytime and also preparing for e-debate? Even during this strike, how many stalites do you see on nairaland? Or is it not inter-school debate? Maybe you only need aspirants in the debate.

I'm not against this debate but be honest with yourselves, it may be just a charade with the timing

To lazy folks like me. There are other 'pallatives' to encourage you to read. There are dozens of tutorials and group discussions. Many of these are free-of-charge. We have departmental group discussions and faculty tutorials. Also, many fellowships on campus do appeal for freshers for their free tutorials. It realy helps. Even if you have read, you need to sample your knowledge with others. There you wil learn quick and excellent method to understand a particular topic. But you shouldnt over-do it. Your personal study comes first. Then, you can just go out there and attend any. Infact, many of these fellowships do send sms, representatives and infact, give take-away just to attend their tutorials. Also, its good to participate fully in group discussions which usualy occur during the evening/night period. An average of two group discussion and two tutorials per week is okay
