When it comes to writing things on a computer, Microsoft Word, or whatever program is used, usually has some form of spell check, and even grammar check plugin. The same cannot be said about writing things by hand. After all, it's not like technology experts have figured out how to integrate spell checking functionality into paper. And even if there were a way, it would probably be too expensive to implement on a grand scale, so we're left with the dream. Fortunately, where there's a will, there's a way, and a team of German investors have the way. Which is to say, they bypassed the issue of intelligent paper practicality altogether and made an intelligent pen instead. Called Lernstift, it is a regular pen with real ink, or at least it looks that way on the outside. What it truly holds is much more important: an engine that recognizes when you spell things wrong and tells you. Well, not tells you. More like vibrates when you get something wrong, by noticing specific movements, letter shapes and various assortments of words. If the pen senses messy handwriting and bad letter formation, it will start vibrating. It won't help finish the word on a high note, but at least you'll know if you're spelling things wrong. We imagine that the Lernstift could be a good way to train calligraphy. It even has a Calligraphy Mode that points out flaws of form and legibility. The other mode is the Orthography Mode, which recognizes words and compares them to a language database. Lerstifit is made with a small battery-powered Linux computer and a WiFi chip. It was invented by Daniel Kaesmacher, the 33-year-old co-founder of Lernstift from Munich, and Falk Wolsky, 36, who had the idea last year when his 10-year-old son was doing homework. If you fall ill on a flight, you have to hope there is a doctor on board. So Dorothy Fletcher can count herself lucky. When she suffered a heart attack on a transatlantic flight from Manchester to Florida, she turned out to be on a plane full of cardiologists. Fifteen experts on their way to a cardiology conference responded when a stewardess asked for medical assistance. They stood up en masse and rushed to save Mrs Fletcher, 67, from Liverpool. They fed drips into her arms and used an onboard medical kit to control the life- threatening attack. The plane was diverted to North Carolina, where Mrs Fletcher was treated in the intensive care unit. The grandmother had been travelling with her daughter to attend her daughter's wedding when she experienced acute chest pains. Speaking from her home in Liverpool yesterday, Mrs Fletcher recalled: 'I couldn't believe what happened. All these people came rushing down the aircraft towards me. The doctors were wonderful. They saved my life. 'My daughter was with me and you can imagine how she felt when all these doctors stood up. I wish I could thank them but I have no idea who they were, other than that they were going to a conference in Orlando.' She spent two days in the Charlotte Medical Centre after the heart attack on 7 November, but managed to attend the wedding at Lake Berkeley, Kissimmee, the following week. Her daughter, Christine Penman, 32, who married her fiance Gareth, said: '2003 was my best and almost my worst of years. We'll see in the new year by giving thanks that my mum got through what she did. 'We owe those cardiologists and the airline so much. Liu was accused of accepting bribes totalling more than 64m yuan ($10m; £6m) over 25 years. Prosecutors said he awarded government rail contracts in return for bribes. Liu is the most high-profile official to be tried and found guilty of corruption since Xi Jinping became China's leader earlier this year. Mr Xi has called for a crackdown on corruption, vowing to tackle it from the powerful "tigers" at the top to the "flies" at the bottom of the Communist Party. It had been criticised for a series of safety scandals, and faced allegations of fraud which were uncovered by government audits. He was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, deprived of his political rights for life and jailed for 10 years, Xinhua said, quoting the court verdict. His personal property will also be confiscated. Despite his sentence, he is not expected to face the death penalty - suspended death sentences are normally commuted to life imprisonment in China. Liu was suspended from the Communist Party last May, following allegations that he embezzled funds and received bribes when handing out contracts for China's high-speed rail project. A US man who threw a mouse onto a pile of burning leaves could only watch in horror as it ran into his house and set the building ablaze. Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, found the mouse in his home and wanted to get rid of it. "I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," he was quoted as saying by AP. Though no-one was injured, the house and everything in it was destroyed. "I've seen numerous house fires, but nothing as unique as this one," Fire Department Captain Jim Lyssy said. Moondyne Joe¹s major claim to fame is that he was Western Australia's most famous bushranger. His real name was Joseph Bolitho Johns. He was the son of a Welsh blacksmith and was imprisoned in 1849 for the theft of foodstuffs from the home of Richard Price in Pentwyn Clydach. Johns was 'in company' with John Williams (a.k.a. William Cross) who was already 'known to the police'. Johns apparently conducted his own defence at his trial and was probably not such a good lawyer, as in 1853 he was transported to W.A. for 10 years. Johns was luckier than his companion as he came to the relatively enlightened colony of Swan River while William Cross was sent to Tasmania! Joe arrived in Perth aboard the Pyrenees and became a ticket of leave man working at the tiny settlement of Moondyne. Two years later he was granted a conditional pardon (March 10th 1855). One story says that he branded an unmarked horse without trying to find the owner and was gaoled in Toodyay for the 'felony'. He then escaped taking the 'evidence' with him - the dead horse minus its skin and incriminating brand being found later in the bush. Another story is that he trapped strayed horses and returned them for the reward but that he was suspected of setting some of the horses loose himself and was therefore charged with horse theft. While in gaol in Toodyay awaiting trial Joe managed to escape but had he waited for the trial he would have been much better off as he was acquitted of horse theft but charged with escaping custody and was sentenced to three years hard labour. In the process of the first escape it is said that he stole the Resident Magistrate¹s horse and bridle but this may just be romantic myth and it is much more likely that he took the horse he was accused of stealing to get rid of the evidence. This was the beginning of a cat and mouse game which 'Joe' and the law played for the next forty years. When recaptured, he seems to have served the next three years without incident and was released in 1864. Just nine months later he was convicted of shooting a steer (he protested his innocence) and was sentenced to ten years. It was this conviction that he regarded as unfair and which prompted his escape soon after. He was recaptured after 12 months on the run and placed in irons but managed to escape again. There are tales that at this stage Joe, leading a number of other escaped convicts, began robbing stores in the Avon Valley with a view to building up supplies to make an attempt to cross from Western Australia to the eastern colonies. On 17 September 1866 he is said to have robbed Everett¹s Store in Toodyay while Governor Hampton was staying in town. The robbery was notable for the fact that Joe and his compatriots managed to escape with guns, supplies, clothing, ammunition, and, of all things, thirty-six fancy ladies handkerchiefs. How they intended to use the handkerchiefs on their journey across Australia was never explained. This daring and successful robbery helped create a legend that Joe had cut off the Governor¹s beard. All of this part of the story may just be romantic myth as other sources state that Joe never had a firearm and never actually held anyone up. In fact the local population appeared to be amused by Joe’s antics, with the possible exception of Governor Hampton who was made to look quite the fool by Joe’s continued escapes. A popular ditty at the time went: ‘The Governor’s son has got the pip The Governor’s got the measles For Moondyne Joe has give ‘em the slip Pop goes the weasel’ Hearing this sung by urchins in the streets of Fremantle must have irked the Governor no end. Whatever the truth, he was captured once more on 29th of September and sent back to Fremantle where he was chained by the neck to a post. A special cell was built for Joe in Fremantle Gaol and when it was completed the Governor proudly declared that if Joe escaped from such a strong cell he would be given him his freedom. Joe remained in the cell for only four months. Due to ill health he was allowed into the exercise yard where he was given stones to break. In one of the most extraordinary escapes ever to occur at Fremantle Gaol he built the stones up against the wall so that a space behind was hidden from the guard, dug through the wall, left his clothes hanging near the wall giving the impression that he was still inside the prison, and made his getaway in his underwear and boots. This time his escape was successful and he remained free for nearly two years. He was recaptured at Houghton¹s wine cellar where he had gone for a drink to celebrate his two years of freedom. Joe broke in to the cellar while the owner was away but was unlucky as when C.W. Ferguson (the owner at the time) returned he was accompanied by two policemen who were in the area on an unrelated matter. At the time he had long flowing hair, was wearing a wheat sack and had a large stick as his only form of protection. He returned to Fremantle where he remained for the next four years until he was once again given a ticket of leave in 1871. Joe is credited with being the first man to cross the newly completed bridge across the Swan River in Fremantle (beating Governor Hampton to it) but this is most likely just folklore inspired by a fictional book titled ‘Moondyne’ by John Boyle O’Reilly Joe finally became a free man in 1873 (another source says 1879 but this was the year he got married). He subsequently married a widow, Louisa Hearn, and became something of a celebrated dandy living in the south west of the state. In 1880 he worked at Witchcliffe and Karridale and although some sources say he discovered Moondyne Cave, it was actually discovered in 1879 by Fred Grange. The story goes that Moondyne Joe was lowered into the cave after a bet that he couldn’t escape. Whether he got out again without assistance isn’t recorded. He left the area in 1883. In 1887 he returned to Toodyay and from there he travelled to the goldfields where, although he was now 60 years old (on our calculations he was 56 years old), he prospected for some years. After the death of his wife in 1893, he returned to the coast and lived in Kelmscott where he gained a reputation for insanity being known as Old Mad Moondyne Joe. He died in the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum on 13 August 1900. (Another source says he may have died in the Old Men’s Home in Claremont in 1920, which if true, would have made him about 89 years old but it is more likely that he died in 1900.) One source quotes Johns' final resting place as being pauper's grave No. 580a in Fremantle cemetery. This is the story, as far as the facts can be ascertained, of the state's most famous bushranger. Time and legend have conspired to make him a far more adventurous and daredevil character than this portrayal suggests. Controlling the movements of a helicopter just with your mind sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but scientists at the University of Minnesota have made it a reality. They have learnt to use their thoughts to steer a model helicopter around a gym, making it dip, rise, turn, and even fly through a ring. The scientists have published their study in the Journal of Neural Engineering. The development of brain computer interfacing (BCI) is to provide the user with the ability to communicate with the world outside and manipulate objects through thought modulation. Achieving this is accomplished through a closed loop of sensing, processing and actuation. Over the last ten years, scientists have made enormous progress in making it possible for us to move things by just thinking about it. Professor Bin He and team, who work in the laboratory of biomedical engineering, say that the technology they are developing may one day help people with neurodegenerative diseases, who have lost the ability to speak or move their bodies, regain function by controlling electronic and mechanical devices, such as artificial limbs, wheelchairs, etc. The team say their technology is completely non-invasive. There are no brain implants. Brainwaves (electroencephalography, EEG) are picked up by electrodes fitted into an EEG cap that goes onto the scalp. Professor He, who is a faculty member in the College of Science and Engineering, said: "My entire career is to push for noninvasive 3-D brain-computer interfaces, or BCI. [Researchers elsewhere] have used a chip implanted into the brain's motor cortex to drive movement of a cursor [across a screen] or a robotic arm. But here we have proof that a noninvasive BCI from a scalp EEG can do as well as an invasive chip." How does the brain- computer interface work The motor cortex is an area of the cerebrum that controls movement. Prof. He's BCI system works thanks to the location of the motor cortex. When humans move, or think about carrying out a movement, neurons in the motor cortex emit small electrical currents. Each thought regarding each different movement activates a new arrangement of neurons. The groundwork for the BCI involved sorting out these neuron arrangements. Professor He said "We were the first to use both functional MRI and EEG imaging to map where in the brain neurons are activated when you imagine movements. So now we know where the signals will come from." According to the brain map, the easiest signals to distinguish were those that resulted in closing one fist, closing the other fist, or both. He explained "This knowledge about what kinds of signals are generated by what kind of motion imagination helps us optimize the design of the system to control flying objects in real time." Tapping the map The EEG cap has 64 scalp-electrodes. They monitor the electrical activity coming from the brain and report signals (or absence of signals) to a computer. The computer processes the data and translates the pattern into an electronic command. Using thoughts to control movement occurred initially with the one- dimensional movement of a cursor on a computer monitor. Researchers then moved a two-dimensional cursor, and finally achieved 3-D control over a virtual helicopter. Now it is a real object, they are able to control an actual flying robot drone which was formally an augmented reality. To control the model helicopter with just thoughts, the team's computers interface with the WiFi controls in the robot (helicopter). After processing the EEG brain signals into a command, the computer sends the command to the helicopter by WiFi. The researchers describe how the team, consisting of five scientists, learned to guide the flying robot. Karl LaFleur, a senior biomedical engineering student, said: "Working for Dr. He has been a phenomenal experience. He has so much experience with the scientific process, and he is excellent at helping his students learn this process while allowing them room for independent work. Being an author on a first-person journal article is a huge opportunity that most undergraduates never get." LaFleur, who is entering medical school next year, says he plans to put his knowledge into use there. LeFleur continued: "I think the potential for BCI is very broad. Next, we want to apply the flying robot technology to help disabled patients interact with the world. It may even help patients with conditions like stroke or Alzheimer's disease. We're now studying some stroke patients to see if it'll help rewire brain circuits to bypass damaged areas." Previous studies on using just thoughts In 2011, scientists from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Rehabilitation Institute created a computer interface that helped a paralyzed man move a prosthetic arm just with thoughts . All he needed to do was use his thoughts and the arm moved. Researchers from the University of Essex and the University of Plymouth, both in England, created technology that allowed a patient with locked-in syndrome to play music just by thinking about it . President Barack Obama says the United States could launch an attack on Iran as early as this June, Israeli media reports. According to a report on Israel’s Channel 10 News that has since been picked up by the Times of Israel, Pres. Obama will use an upcoming meeting overseas to discuss a military strike on Iran. Pres. Obama is scheduled to visit Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next month, and during the get-together the two leaders will reportedly work out the details for a possible assault. Pres. Obama will tell Netanyahu that a “window of opportunity” for a military strike on Iran will open in June, Channel 10 claims. Israel has long-urged the White House to use its military prowess to intervene in Iran’s rumored nuclear weapon procurement plan, demands which have by-and-large been rejected by the Obama administration. According to the latest reports, though, the United States might finally be willing to use its might to make a stand against Iran’s race for a nuke. “I have conversations with Prime Minister Netanyahu all the time. And I understand and share Prime Minister Netanyahu’s insistence that Iran should not obtain a nuclear weapon, because it would threaten us, it would threaten Israel, and it would threaten the world and kick off a nuclear arms race,” Pres. Obama said during an interview on the television program 60 Minutes last year, but not before adding that he’ll continue to block “noise” from Netanyahu’s camp. "Now I feel an obligation, not pressure but obligation, to make sure that we’re in close consultation with the Israelis — on these issues. Because it affects them deeply. They’re one of our closest allies in the region. And we’ve got an Iranian regime that has said horrible things that directly threaten Israel’s existence,” he said. But five months after those remarks, Iran is still inclined to become a nuclear power. Only days earlier, The Jerusalem Post reported that Netanyahu said the details of a confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency suggested that that Iran had begun installing advanced centrifuges at its main uranium enrichment facility, sparking “very grave” concerns that Israel could be hit with a nuke. Right now, five members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany are holding talks with Iranian officials in Kazakhstan, with the goal of reaching a diplomatic answer to the nuclear crisis. However, domestic tensions within Iranian political elite do not make the prospect of a solution any more viable for now. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s second and final term in office is set to wrap up this June, and political fights within the country’s top contenders for the position has prompted possible presidents to take harsh stance on the issue and resist outside pressure. "President Ahmadinejad’s second term in office expires in half a year. The law prohibits him from running for the third term. What is happening could be an intensifying power struggle,” Andrei Baklitsky of the Russian Center for Policy Studies tells the Moscow Times of the latest “5+1 talks” in Kazakhstan. “At first [Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar] Salehi signals the possibility of direct talks with the United States and then the supreme leader rejects it. But as Salehi is Ahmadinejad’s man, the controversy should be viewed through the prism of an internal political standoff rather than as Tehran’s official policy." John Kerry, the US secretary of state, told reporters in Berlin, "My hope is Iran will make its choice to move down the path to a diplomatic solution." When Netanyahu critiqued the United States’ reluctance to act first last year, a meeting between the prime minister and Pres. Obama was subsequently cancelled by the White House. Just next month, though, the commander-in-chief will travel to the West Bank and Jordan for the first time during his second term in office. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor has said of the trip that it will mark an “opportunity to reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel and to discuss the way forward on a broad range of issues of mutual concern, including Iran and Syria.”
