Note that DVDs hardly play movies that aren't .Dat, AVI or MOV formats. Even if them write MP4 not to talk of MKV most of the times it struggles to work.

TVs on the other hand are better especially if it is a Smart TV.

Like my Android TV plays every format and encoding including x265/HEVC
