Politics / The Education Sector And One Year Of The Buhari Administration by Olsoo(m): 6:10pm On Jun 03, 2016 |
The Education Sector and One Year of the Buhari Administration By Daniel Moses It is now a year since our President, Muhammadu Buhari took the oath of office. Buhari who rode on his infamous change mantra to win the 28th elections had a lot of promises stocked for Nigerians in his manifesto. Some of these promises, he has fulfilled. A lot others, he hasn’t. But as some would say, “it’s too early to judge”. However, the focus of this piece is largely on the educational sector. “The educational sector is the key to an accelerated economic growth and the panacea to all other social problems ravaging our land. Educating children, no matter where they are, is one of the biggest steps we can take towards ending extreme poverty and a life of mediocrity”- (Prime, 2016). You will agree with me that an uneducated nation is a regressing nation. But where does this sector lie on our dear president’s scale of preference? Very recently, on the 7th and 27th of April to be precise, the Students Union Government of two front liner universities in Nigeria, University of Lagos and University of Ibadan took to the streets to protest in their own words “poor welfare”. This sort of action is not at all new to our educational system as there have been very similar cases in the past years but why I am more surprised is that despite the grave actions taken by the school management, which involved closing down the school campus indefinitely, our dear president did not intervene and help solve this very delicate matter. I mean up to six schools (including UNIPORT, OAU, UNICAL, AAU) were closed due to student’s clamour for a better welfare and not even a reaction to it by the president? In my opinion, this is very bad given the fact that the schools involved are majorly Federal owned. This might have been occurring in the past but we believe Mr. president’s change mantra should apply to every sector possible, how much more one of the most important sectors in the country. In the 2014 budget, 373.4billion in naira was set aside for the educational sector, while it gulped 392.3billion in 2015. Now, Mr. President has allocated 369.6billion naira for it in his own budget. This is very commendable as it is still in the range of the recent past. I know every conscientious mind is aware, except if we want to lie to ourselves, of the achievements made in the education sector in 2014 and 2015. Please the pressure is on you sir, to surpass these achievements. There are a lot of things I would like to point out for Mr. President to look into. Ranging from building more universities with conducive learning environments to accommodate millions of students who are qualified but were not admitted by their school of choice to paying attention to students’ welfare in the already established universities as it has gone to the dogs. In the past year, Mr. President has been seen to focus a lot of his manpower on corruption. I want to sincerely laud his efforts and charge him to also shine his torch on this sector. I won’t say more than this. In a few more years, it is either we look back at the president’s achievements or we look forward to his excuses for failing. I’d prefer the former though. Even if recent happenings and observations in the past one year has left me wondering if anything has actually improved in the education sector. http://www.orderpaper.ng/education-sector-one-year-buhari-administration/ |

Phones / Re: What Will Happen If Mtn Nigeria Refuses To Pay Their Fine By 31st Of December? by Olsoo(m): 9:10pm On Dec 31, 2015 |
lezz: Spot-on. By the way, I think MTN knows they have no other choice than to pay the fine but they're trying out their luck on FG. FG speaking of which, will lose this war if they fail to impose any sanction despite reducing the fine and postponing the deadline. MTN's attitude towards this fine shows they don't intend to pay unless they're being forced to...and only FG's strictness and assertiveness can yield a positive result. If nothing is done by Tomorrow, then I totally give up on FG, NCC and the fine! 2 Likes 1 Share |
