Bibitayo2: Please, is teaching a good profession to go into in Canada?
I currently teach in Nigeria and I plan on getting the teaching license of a province before I move.
I am also taking online courses on KYC/AML. Teaching, you cannot go wrong with this. The only challenge might be the culture shock. People usually starts with sub teachers and eventually transition to full-time. In Alberta, because the teachers went on strike recently, the government is planning to hire more teachers but the timeline is not known yet but for me, I have not met one teacher that is not employed. |

Kunfu: Hello guys, please What is the best and faster way to renew my passport in Canada, my passport will expire by may next year If you are close or in Ottawa (Nigeria High Commission is here), best is to just apply to get it done there. Not close to Ottawa, you can search for contact less option. You could do everything remotely and just send your old passport to them via mail and they will do same with your new passport. I have heard some success stories about this option online. |

eniola1010: I plan to take the grant only.
My income for 2024 is 0.
My income for 2025 is 0.
My course starts Jan 2026, and the program is applied for in Nov 2025, meaning I will be applying for the OSAP in 2025 towards '2026 start of programme'
However, I am positively sure I will get a job in 2026.
My course, though full time, I am more than confidence I can juggle my job and the course because its a purely online pre-recorded course. I can always go to work and do my course in the evening after I'm back from work.
The issue is this, if I file my tax for 2026 in 2027, wouldn't OSAP convert my grant to loan based on the fact that
Since I would obviously have an income in 2026, wouldn't that trigger the OSAP guys to come after me in 2027 stating that I already have an income -even though i started getting the income way after my school started - and as such I was not meant to be taking OSAP or I should have reached out to them so they could have stopped subsequent OSAP payment. Its good that you already planned it out and you could maximize this. Caveat, when you start making the money after your program and the government comes with taxes, please don't hesitate ooo because they will surely come... |

JIREN01: Hi everyone, I do have a question. Is it just me or it’s so difficult to get a job in Canada? It’s so crazy and strangely challenging. I’ve spoken with a few guys who have been here for a while (2018/2019 arrivals) and was told it was easier in the past. The job market is unbelievably horrible at the moment, and the tech bubble, which is obviously waning, evidenced by the series of layoffs, didn’t help matters at all. Almost every job vacancies on LinkedIn have >100 applicants in just a few hours of posting. To everyone, I’ll appreciate any ideas on areas or fields with lesser competition that one can pivot into. Any roles with a fast learning curve where you can learn the ropes very fast and get up to speed in no time? We currently live in an interesting time. The job market is tough for everyone. In Canada here, the tariff from US is really hitting bad because large employers are being affected. The rise and use of AI is another factor entirely. However, in the midst of all this for "proessionals", I am discovering that people on "streets" are really busy. A guy came to change my tires and oil change and charge $210 for less than 1hr job told me he still has about extra 3 other appointments as at 4:30pm. Guys who tow vehicles are charging $300 for less than 20Km trip etc. It would be nice to know your field and another thing is for LinkedIn, they are mostly the big firms that a lot of people are keeping their eyes on but for medium size firms, they are still hiring. Career pivot/flexibility is the way to navigate this trying period. |

OkoyeIfechukwu: Hello Everyone,
I need help finding an affordable place to stay in Toronto, Canada, close to my school at Seneca College. I recently had my study permit approved, but I'm finding it difficult to secure a place. The in-Campus housing is quite expensive, 4775 CAD for 3 months. Please, I need advice/assistance. Thank you My suggestion would that you research about neighboring cities and the transportation infrastructure to Toronto to decide where you will stay at least temporarily and when you are on ground, you can search for opportunities in your preferred location. In getting a place, the best most times is to get someone in WhatsApp groups where some of this postings are done or someone help you post your requests. People might want to sublet their basement, condo or shared spaces. I am in Edmonton though maybe some in Toronto or neighboring cities can help out. |

jedisco: Interesting. The bolded never crossed my mind as I just thought the lower LTV would get a better rate. But looking at it thru the eyes of the bank, it makes sense though given that an external body now guarantees the loan. But for insured mortgages, does that insurance last the lifetime of the mortgage or carry on is one switches lenders in future?
I gather the issue with being an employee of ones company is that you pay both the employee and employer part of the CPP. The alternative is to take dividends but that excludes one from RRSP. I can oly wonder if the CPP and additional income tax on wage taken are made up by the RRSP and CPP. I want to believe the premium is for the lifetime of the mortgage because the premium is calculated based on the total amount of the mortgage. The limit on RRSP is based on the income earned in the reporting year. So as an entrepreneur, your limit would be based on the amount taken as wage/salary from the business. So with your accountant, you could do a proper planning such that, you create a benchmark to maximize RRSP at the same time not push you to the higher tax bracket from salary while allocating the rest to come from dividend and you do not get RRSP room from here. CPP is based on salary alone and it does not have any relationship to RRSP. |

jedisco: Good stuff
For the rental, I ultimately used rentfaster with aim to get my place when the rental expires
It appears Facebook marketplace is quite popular in Canada as I've seen a few reference it. I'd keep that in mind in future. The waitlist for RAVs dey make me laugh. I know it's dependable but the car dey like taxi for Canada. With a vehicle, I just want peace of mind. As I was blowing money on Uber with my movement still being restricted, I ultimately went to a dealership and sorted out a lease.
Lol @nauseate. See me that my MTN line has been going strongly for over 7yrs away while only needing to use it at intervals. On my initial visit, I got a prepaid sim with Freedom but the jokers told me it's been deactivated when I wanted to return. Appears they deactivated it in abt 3months and worse still, there I was unable to retrieve the number. Subsequently got my second my sim at the airport. It costs 44 cad with 200mins fee international calls which includes the UK and 9ja and 100gb I think. The free international calls was the main clincher. Its saved me alot on roaming fees.
With the mortgage, I'm hoping to put down enough to avoid the insurance prenium. I heavily overpaid on my last mortgage and looking back, I might have handled it better i.e pay the minimum required sum and keep the overpay aside- mostly invested and when I come to remortgage, I can decide how much to add based on the LTV I'm targeting which would be dependent on the rates on offer. Ultimately, there is the subtle pressure that comes with having a large part of your home unpaid - I guess that's what the relevant insurance cover is there for.
Good enough, I'm not in BC or Ontario. My city has shown some resilience with modest growth and I wouldn't be surprised if that continues into the coming years as markets stabilise. Target is to start looking over winter but I know the market is slow then. I wonder what the common online aggregator for house sales is. I mean one where I can see over 90% of listings. I want to keep an eye on things.
My case is a bit nuanced in that I'm self-employed. So any employee/employer contribution ultimately comes from me. I'm still tryna wrap my head around the RRSP stuff and how tax efficient it can be in different scenarios. So far, I've found it needlessly cumbersome while not being very tax efficient or generous. It appears if one has too much there, it might be detrimental in retirement. Looking for an ELI-5 article on it all. My accountant wasn't so keen on it and says he tends to advise his older (middle-aged) clients to focus more on other investments such as property.. sounded kinda odd
Good performance on your investment. Is the e-series fvnd a global one? Do you know of a site that agrregates brokers and fvnds based on select criteria e.g fees they charge? I'm looking for the Canadian version of this: https://monevator.com/compare-uk-cheapest-online-brokers/ Also a place where I can see deals to be had with different brokers. Just to add some thoughts a. To avoid the mortgage premium would mean putting down minimum 20%. It comes with some cost though. Because the mortgage would not be insured, it is more risky for the bank so your interest rate would likely be higher than an insured mortgage because they would factor this into the rate they would give you. You might want to do the calculation by comparing the rate with someone who is dropping less than 20% then see the amount you saving or paying more in interest. You can speak to a broker to paint the different scenarios. If I am the same position, I would do the hybrid approach. Pay less than 20% and the insurance premium, lock in lower rate, get refund on the premium paid for energy efficient houses, then pay it back on the loan itself. b. For RRSP, as a self employed person, what you are contributing into is the CPP (Canada Pension Plan) which is compulsory for everyone. RRSP is optional where you contribute and withdraw from to supplement income from CPP when you retire. Other benefits of RRSP is that you can borrow from it to buy your first home and the contribution is deducted from your taxable income so you pay lower tax as self employed but for employees, you get a refund. Its actually pretty simple all banks have it as a product and some you can even open online and contribute just be mindful of the limit but if you log into CRA website, you will see your limit. Since you are looking to buy soon, you can open the FHSA and this one you can contribute up to 8k per year maximum $40k to buy your first home and its all going to be tax free. |

lanresz: Given the way cities develop in Canada, houses built 30 to 60 years ago will be in an established parts of the city with good infrastructure connections and known communities as you mentioned. However, over the 30 to 60 years, new communities are established and people tend to move to those communities leaving the older ones behind. Lot of these communities are in downtown full of undesirable characters. If you buy a 30 to 60 year old house, a lot could happen in 15 - 25 years when you might be looking to sell it. It depends on where the market is at that point. One thing I have found about Canada is that it is very underpopulated given the landmass. Outside of the 3 major cities, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, there are still lot land that are suitable to build houses. If you look at Edmonton for instance, between Edmonton and Leduc, you still have lot of land that houses could be built on despite all the developments made in recent years. Then there is still lot of land between Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan that could still be developed. It is not like UK/Europe, where land is a constraint. The point I'm trying to make is that with the land size, it is difficult to predict what would happen in 15 to 25 years when one might be looking to sell. Some of the old houses are knock down to build new ones. If the house is in a desirable area like River Valley in Edmonton and the lot size is big, a developer may pull the house down and build 2 to 4 houses on it. A lot goes into play. Given the increase in cost of heating and the temperature in Canada, people care a lot about how energy efficient a house is.
I hope I answer some of your questions. I completely agree with you. I currently live in Edmonton and work in Acheson, I have lived in Calgary and Vancouver. I have had the opportunity to drive through the range roads outside the core city between Leduc, Edmonton, Beaumont, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain all the way to St. Albert and the amount available land for development is massive unlike Vancouver and neighboring cities where you hardly see vacant land. This makes me skeptical about investing in real estate in Edmonton here because the current developing neighborhoods might not even reach maturity in 15 years and there are tons of land to develop. With such abundance, appreciation is limited and with advancement in technology and speed, new houses would continue to be cheaper to maintain across board. The alternative is to consider either farm lands or commercial real estate as those grows as the community matures. |

Proffemi, I have read your responses so far and I am convinced that it is nothing short of being objective. All the news of Elujoba being nice to people was because of the allowance he paid and nothing else. But the issue is from which source did he get the money? Some have argued that the money was there lying fallow, then I asked who has the right to determine whether its lying fallow or not?
This is a fund that started in 2012 to raise endowment fund of 20billion for the infrastructural development of OAU since federal government is not releasing enough funds for capital expenditure. Various alumni contributed to that fund including freshers when you check the break down of their fees when they resume.
Come to think of it, that payment might not even offset the allowances and then they continue to deplete the fund to zero until there is nothing left in that account to be used for the purpose it was set in the first place.
Ever since this matter began, a leader should not compromise LEGALITY and MORALITY I see they declare lecture free day to show support, how many days will they declare for the entire trial.

For those arguing that its not possible to serve in 1999 and the serve in 2000, one thing I am sure of is that even if the VC or NYSC DG under oath gave an explanation to that effect, you will still not accept because it does not go your way.
In as much as I wont defend Dino, a VC came to the Senate and gave a testimony yet we doubt it, but we believe an 'Unnamed Exam Officer' who does not have authority to speak on the matter. It seems we just prefer to disrespect the system for whatever reason that does not go our own way.
On an assumption basis since we are all assuming the VC has been bribed, What if he had gone to serve in 1999 but didnt do convocation until 2000? Would that not mean he graduated in 2000? |

Politics › How To Criticise Buhari And Get Away With It - Ayo Sogunro by olubams(op): 10:39pm On Apr 05, 2016 |
Times are hard in Nigeria. A lot of us are physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially frustrated. Sadly, the only person anyone can kick in the shin right now is President Muhammadu Buhari.
But kicking President Buhari comes with great damage to one’s feet. President Buhari is a saint. You have to contend with fanatical Buharideens and Buharists who confidently believe that the man is God’s gift to humanity. You have to survive the onslaught of APC youths who absolutely detest free speech, freedom of expression or even rule of law. And then, most terrifyingly, you have to face your own people—the people to whom you preached Buhari in 2015—and try to explain to them that, all the gods forbid, you are not a “wailer”.
Or, maybe, you are just a known social critic and you want to score points for objectivity. Or, possibly, you are a generally nice person and—though heaven knows the fuel and power situation is killing you daily—you honestly don’t want to hurt the president’s fragile feelings.
Well, look no further, here’s how to criticise Buhari and still live to fight another day.
Start with PDP: Whether your criticism takes the form of a Facebook post, a series of tweets, an open letter, a full blown article or an inspired poem, always make like Lai Mohammed and start with PDP. Make it known from the outset that you positively hate PDP. Even if your knowledge of PDP started in the last 5 years–you must capture PDP’s sixteen years. (“16” is now a magic figure in Nigerian history.) This no-holds-barred anti-PDP stance is what will determine the “objectivity” of your article. In APC’s Nigeria, PDP has no positives. And as far as APC people are concerned, the only objective critics of Buhari are the people who demonstrably supported Buhari. Those 12 million silly Nigerians who voted Jonathan are second-class citizens whose parents missed road in their upbringing. They have no right to criticise Buhari.
Wailing wailers. Examples of how to start your criticism: “Everyone knows PDP destroyed Nigeria these 16 years…“, “When I voted Buhari in 2015…”, “In 2015, I supported the Buhari campaign…”, “If I had to vote again, I can never vote for PDP…”, “Let me be clear, I can never support PDP”. Of course, you may not have actually voted for APC or even voted at all on March 28, 2015, but that’s between you, your deity and INEC.
Commend Buhari’s efforts so far: Obviously, Buhari has not been lounging since he came into office. The man has been very busy. Take a look: he has enforced the TSA, routed Boko Haram, appointed excellent Ministers, prepared a Budget of Hope, solidified Nigeria’s foreign policy, and burnt a lot of aviation fuel. You have to acknowledge this hard work if you want to stay alive after your criticism. Look for something positive and praise it like the best thing since Olajumoke’s unsliced bread. “I cannot help but praise your innovation in implementing the TSA…”. Do you even know what TSA does? Who cares? Just mention it. “As we look forward to the passing of the impressive 2016 Budget …”, “Your presidential poise in official photographs fills me with inspiration and hope for the future.”
Attack the other critics: You want to criticise Buhari and escape the whipping? Then make it clear that you are not one of them. By “them” you mean the wailing wailers–those 12 million Nigerians who voted for Jonathan and now have bellyache. You, on the other hand, are a genuine, objective, constructive Buhari-loving critic who wants nothing but the progress of the president. You do not want to be mistaken for those PDP anarchists. “I know some people are happy that I am criticising Buhari, but they are mistaken if they think I am one of them”, or you can be very direct: “Bleep you, wailers. Don’t you dare think I am wailing.” You are merely advising the president. Honestly.
Play the “fighting corruption” card: If there’s anything that shows just how much you appreciate Buhari’s tenure, it is your stance on the war against corruption so far. Don’t you dare suggest the war is not shaping up. This is the only thing for which you cannot criticise Buhari. Anti-corruptuon is Buhari territory. In fact, you have to go gaga on how overwhelmingly successful the fight has been. Here’s a secret: Buhari’s war against corruption is like the Emperor’s New Robes: if you cannot see it, then there must be something fundamentally wrong with your moral system. Or have you collected some of the Dasuki loot? You had better ramp up your appreciation of the amazing, glorious, and fantastic fight against corruption. “The war on corruption is a huge success…“, “I support the ongoing fight against corruption in our country...”, “President Buhari, the level of corruption in the country has dropped dramatically since you were sworn in!”
Beg permission for your criticism: Now that you have successfully demonstrated your loyalty, ask for permission to mention your concerns. Be polite. Buhari is not your daddy. Buhari is minding his business and you people and your problems will just come and be disrespecting him anyhow.“Dear Buhari, I know you are busy with more important issues like the Nuclear Summit, but allow me to mention this small issue of fuel scarcity…”
Criticise carefully: This is the dangerous part. Don’t rush in like a wailing wailer on a suicide mission. Don’t attack Buhari or blame him for whatever is worrying you. He is not the cause of your problem. He is here, like Jesus on the cross, to save you from the 16 years of your parents’ stupidity. So, watch your language. Keep the tone passive or pleasant. Also, make suggestions, don’t just criticise. “Dear Buhari, sometimes we have to say the truth, this fuel scarcity caused by the PDP is becoming serious…”, “I wish to call the president’s attention to the recent Agatu issue…”, “I know the judiciary/CBN/NNPC/PDP/is not helping matters but I beg Buhari to look into the issue of…”. Acknowledge the stumbling blocks in Buhari’s path and suggest their removal. There are plenty to choose from: the CBN, NNPC, PDP, judiciary, rule of law, even the damn Constitution. “Buhari is king, Bleep the Constitution…“. If you are desperate and your phone battery is about to die: “Buhari, epp us, plix.”
Reassure Buharists of your loyalty: Phew! That was close. If you did your work well, the Buharideens and APC youths will be in your comments at this point. They will praise your objectivity and constructive criticism. Your retweets and likes will be flowing like money into Dasuki’s account. You can go home at this point, but if you want to “kill them totally” just add another reminder of your faith in the Church of Buhari. Repeat your attack on wailers and Jonathanians and, if you really want to go nuclear, Zikists, Awoists, IBBists, Abachians…. No, no. Don’t ever attack Abachians. Perish the thought. One mistake like that and you’re back in Wailerland. Don’t go beyond the 16 year benchmark. Buhari has a past too, so just stay in the present, or in the future. “I remain committed to the Change agenda…”, “I am confident in President Buhari’s abilities…”, “Under Buhari, I know Nigeria is destined for a great future…”.
Remind everyone that you’re the boss: If you are not feeling ashamed of yourself at this point, then congrats, you’re a first class sycophant! For the rest of us, normal citizens, we have our conscience to deal with. Knowing how much ass we have just kissed, we have to balance things by reminding Buhari that we elected him and we are boss. We will continue to criticise him. Hard. Next time. “We are watching you, sir, and we will continue to be vigilant”, “In 2015, I promised I will criticise you, sir, and I am going to continue keeping my promise, sir”, “The office of the citizen requires that we do this, sir. Please, sir. Take note, sir.” Ayo Sogunro was called a “paid APC agent” when he criticised the inefficiencies of the Jonathan administration. Because people are forgetful or mischievous, he has now been called a “closet GEJ sympathiser” for criticising the inefficiencies of the Buhari administration. Ayo Sogunro is unimpressed by both labels. But, he remains committed to the Change agenda.http://ayosogunro.com/2016/04/05/how-to-criticise-buhari-and-get-away-with-it-by-ayo-sogunro/

Politics › Re: Buhari Never Promised APC To Make Naira Equal To Dollar – APC by olubams: 8:51pm On Apr 16, 2015 |
wisdomguy4u: The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied that its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, promised to bring the naira at par with the dollar if voted into power come March, 28, 2015. APC also promised to implement the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on the Restructuring and Rationalisation of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies to merge or scrap some agencies and parastatals.
Speaking on Tuesday, Director, Policies and Strategy of the APC campaign group, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the clarification on Tuesday at the Nigeria Political Parties Discussion Series (NPPDS) organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in Abuja, with the theme; ‘Manifesto Hour: Political Parties and the Citizenry’.
According to him, what Buhari said was that the current exchange rate of the naira to the dollar was unacceptable. “Buhari never said, ‘I will bring naira at par with the dollars’, he said the current exchange rate was unacceptable. “We are going to restructure the way we educate our youths. We cannot continue to educate our youths in the way of the 1960s,” he stated. He also faulted the current educational system, which gives preference to university education, saying his party would restructure the system such that every youth would be employable after graduation.
While promising to also give the issues of people living with disabilities adequate focus, he disclosed that a social security programme has been planned in which the most vulnerable in the society would be given N5, 000 per month
Earlier, APC Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said his party’s manifesto centres on job creation, corruption and security.
