Business / NNPCL Woos South Korean Investors To Gas Projects In Nigeria by Oluchi54: 1:57pm On Jan 31
In a move to harness Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for global energy markets, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has engaged in discussions with a South Korean consortium led by Daewoo E &

The talks, held in Seoul, focused on potential collaborations to develop greenfield gas projects, with a keen interest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, a major industry in South Korea.

NNPCL, eyeing foreign direct investment, aims to solidify the discussions into a Memorandum of Understanding, aligning with the Federal Government’s policy to attract global investors. Mele Kyari, CEO of NNPCL, lauded Temile Development Company’s achievement in commissioning a modern Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier in South Korea, emphasizing its contribution to domestic gas utilization.

Kyari stated: “Nigeria’s objective is to ensure that everyone has access to clean energy and particularly walk away from biomass as a source of energy.”

Business / Constitutional Review And Tinubu’s Audacity Of Reforms by Oluchi54: 1:40pm On Jan 31
President Bola Tinubu started his government with an audacious move to remove a slippery fuel subsidy regime that former presidents had dreaded to touch. He had also floated the naira in the foreign exchange market, and went on an all-out mission to rein in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from perceived fiscal excesses. He has also dared to fire and/or support the prosecution of erring ministers.

Yet, the president is faced with a worsening heritage of insecurity, sectarianism, economic hardship and corrupt leadership. The frightening nature of these problems has blighted the positive moves, if any, that Tinubu has made to govern the country, and Nigerians are not to blame for expecting a lot more from their president. Tinubu and his men are searching frantically for the way out. Are they?

For the sake of insecurity, the president took another audacious aim at police reforms and constitutional changes in late 2023. He constituted a committee to look into police reforms, and to oversee the necessary constitutional amendments to bring about the reforms, which have not occurred since 1861 when the police force came into being in pre-colonial Nigeria. Since the turn of the new democratic dispensation in 1999, insecurity and constitutional reforms have been at the core of the demands of a great majority of Nigerians, who insist that successive governments have been half-hearted in their reform approaches.

Politics / Nigeria: The Praying Nation by Oluchi54: 3:41pm On Dec 13, 2023
According to the Pew Research Center, Nigeria is the second most prayerful country in the world following Afghanistan by a narrow margin, it is no exaggeration to say that an average Nigerian prays immediately after rising from bed, before work, after work, before eating, after eating, before going to bed and even in their sleep.
Both Christians and our Islamic brothers who pray five times daily, have that trait. This combination forms the praying nation.

It is wise to ask why Nigerians are so prayerful.

Many Nigerians seek and obtain solace under the umbrella of prayer, they give thanks to God always even when things go contrary to their prayers.

It serves as an outlet to voice out the pain of the economic conditions of the country which is depressing, desolating and traumatic.

Studies have also shown that prayers reduce stress, increase empathy, and builds relationship. It is also a spiritual exercise where people communicate with God, show remorsefulness to God and find direction.

For Muslims, they pray five times a day to fulfil the obligation bestowed upon them by Allah through his prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

For Christians, it’s more like a communication between a man and his maker.

Business / Africa’s Economic Survival Amid Eu’s New Carbon Tax [PBA Editorial] by Oluchi54: 3:16pm On Dec 13, 2023
There is so much that $25billion dollars can do for Africa. While the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) $25billion Fund is projected to help the continent overcome food insecurity in five years, the International Energy Agency (IEA) states that an annual investment of $25billion is needed in Africa for the people of the continent to have full access to electricity. This is to mention just a few critical sectors that readily provide the opportunity cost for the princely sum which is what Africa, according to the AfDB President, Akinwumi Adesina, risks losing directly to the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

While drumming home the implications of the new EU trade policy, the development bank chief pointed out that the mechanism could significantly constrain Africa’s trade and industrialization progress by penalizing value-added exports including steel, cement, iron, aluminium and fertilizers. He was emphatic that “With Africa’s energy deficit and reliance mainly on fossil fuels, especially diesel, the implication is that Africa will be forced to export raw commodities again into Europe, which will further cause de-industrialization of Africa”.

European Union in an attempt to level the playing field for all businesses operating in the bloc and prevent EU-based companies from being undercut by competitors in more-polluting regions of the world, CBAM is being introduced for importers to pay a carbon price equivalent to that paid by European producers under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The European Commission describes the CBAM as its “landmark tool to fight carbon leakage”. Carbon leakage occurs when industries based in the EU move carbon-intensive production abroad to countries where less stringent climate policies are in place.

Business / Oil Theft Continues To Frustrate Nigeria’s Efforts To Ramp Up Production by Oluchi54: 11:51am On Nov 29, 2023
Increasing crude oil production output which provides over 90 per cent of Nigeria’s revenue has continued to elude the country due to theft.

Oil theft in Nigeria has been a long-standing issue, with billions of dollars worth of crude oil stolen from pipelines and infrastructure every year. The theft, often carried out by criminal syndicates, has devastating effects on the country’s economy and environment.

In the latest update on Tuesday, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) said a total of 226 incidents of crude oil theft were recorded in Niger Delta between 18 and 24 November 2023. The national oil company said 39 illegal pipeline connections and 77 illegal refineries were uncovered and destroyed in the region which includes the following states, Rivers, Delta, Abia, Bayelsa, and Imo in the past week.

It also added that 21 cases of oil pipeline vandalism were recorded in Delta and Rivers State where a boat fills with crude from a vandalised wellhead. Five cases of oil spills were also recorded in the past week while illegal storage sites were discovered in Rivers, Delta, Abia and Bayelsa States.

“Pipeline vandalism remained a persistent challenge, with 21 incidents detected in Rivers and Delta states. Security forces also intercepted nine vessels engaged in AIS (Automatic Identification System) infractions and apprehended 55 wooden boats transporting stolen crude in Delta State.”

Last week the Chief Executive Officer, NNPCL, Mele Kyari had during the weekly series tagged “Energy and You” aired on NTA, revealed that over 5,000 kilometers of oil pipelines were destroyed by vandals, with the country recording 172 crude oil theft incidents across different states between 11th to 17th of November.

Business / Ten Hag ‘votes’ Garnacho Stunner Season’s Best Goal by Oluchi54: 8:48am On Nov 27, 2023
Manchester United manager Eric Ten Hag has tipped Alejandro Garnacho’s exquisite overhead kick on Sunday evening against Everton as the likely winner of the ‘Goal of the 2023/2024 season’s award.
United forward Garnacho, who is a fan of his former teammate and Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored a spectacular goal reminiscent of the February 2011 strike of United legend Wayne Rooney in the Manchester derby.
It took only three minutes for the teenage sensation to put the Red Devils ahead with two further goals by Marcus Rashford (penalty) and Anthony Martial deciding the game.
Garnacho’s sensational goal silenced the home fans inside Goodison Park, who had been protesting their club’s 10 points deduction from the Premier League due to breaches of profit and sustainability rules.
Everton was a much-improved side in the second half but could not convert the several scoring chances that came their way.
Ten Hag was full of praise for the youngster.
‘’It was a fantastic goal. This season, there are many games to play, but probably already that is the goal of the season.

Business / Beyond Economic Reparation For Transatlantic Slave Trade [PBA Editorial] by Oluchi54: 11:34am On Nov 23, 2023
An interesting conference attended by senior government officials from across Africa and the Diaspora community was held in Accra, Ghana last Thursday. The theme of the discussion was Europe’s creation of wealth in the most inhumane manner and at the cost of poverty during the transAtlantic slave trade era. This was between the 16th and 19th centuries when foreign overlords forcibly uprooted an estimated 12.5 million Africans from their homeland, transporting them in the most dehumanizing conditions (termed Middle Passage) to Europe and the Americas where survivors end up enslaved on brutal plantations.
The forced enslavement of Africans remains perhaps the darkest chapter in human history, leaving an indelible mark on the African continent and its people across generations. The repercussions of this deplorable trade reverberate today as social, economic, and political inequalities. In the light of this historical injustice, there have been growing calls for economic reparations to be paid to African countries to rectify the enduring consequences of the transatlantic slave trade. At the Accra summit, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo of Ghana denounced the British and other European countries for enriching themselves during the slave trade while “enslaved Africans did not receive a cent”.
The host President told the summiteers: “It is time that Africa, whose sons and daughters had their freedoms controlled and were sold into slavery, also received reparations.” In the end, the conference came up with a communique that called for the establishment of a Global Reparations Fund (GRF) that would seek and receive compensation owed to millions of Africans enslaved centuries ago during the transatlantic slave trade. While this is happening in the motherland, calls for reparations have gained momentum in countries throughout the African Diaspora.

Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx finds himself at the centre of a legal dispute as he is sued for alleged sexual assault at a New York rooftop bar in 2015.

The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, claims that Foxx, accompanied by Mark Birnbaum, the bar’s owner, assaulted a woman identified as Jane Doe in a secluded area of the Catch NYC rooftop lounge.

According to the plaintiff, the incident occurred when the woman and her friend were seated at a table adjacent to Foxx and Birnbaum.

Seeking a photo opportunity, the woman’s friend approached Foxx around 1 a.m., initiating a series of compliments from the actor.

The suit details Foxx’s remarks, including comments on the plaintiff’s physique and a comparison to actress Gabrielle Union.

The situation escalated when Foxx allegedly took the woman to a more secluded part of the rooftop, where he is accused of groping her breasts and, against her will, placing his hands underneath her pants, touching her vagina and anus.

Politics / Former Lagos Gubernatorial Aspirant Tasks Lagos Government On Budgets by Oluchi54: 11:00am On Nov 23, 2023
Former gubernatorial aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, Funso Doherty has praised the effort of the Lagos state government to address the controversies surrounding the outrageous budgets and procurement undertaken by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration.

Doherty however believes that the state government ought to have also appropriately reviewed the Public Procurement Document before making it available to the public.

On the subject of Lagos State government being unresponsive to the people’s demand for transparency in procurement awards, Doherty was in the affirmative.

“There are some truths to that and we should always push the envelope in terms of holding the feet of the government and its agencies, not just to put out information (but) where there are gaps to insist that they do the right thing.

“I think that’s the spirit actually of this work that we have done – to say that when people know that there is a searchlight on them, they sit up and act differently,” Doherty told Channels Television.

“And I think I learned it like any other citizen could have done it and maybe I have the profile of being a politician so it gave it whims in a sense.

“The way it has caught on, this particular tweet (calling for transparency) has got 7 1/2 million tweets and I don’t know any tweet has that kind of response so it tells you that it touched a nerve that people have.

Politics / Tinubu Eyes Guinness World Record… But Not As Chef by Oluchi54: 1:00pm On Nov 22, 2023
While some ambitious Nigerians are bent on returning the glory home after Irish chef based in Japan, Alan Fisher, dethroned chef Hilda Baci for the longest cooking marathon, President Bola Tinubu has stated that he deserves recognition from the Guinness World Records (GWR) due to the economic reforms he has introduced since assuming office on May 29.

Addressing groups of investors at the 10th German-Nigerian Business Forum on Tuesday, the President said he has dealt with “every hurdle and obstacle” in the way of those willing to invest in Nigeria.

Tinubu recalled his time as a corporate player, adding that his experience from the private sector has equipped him with the tools to tackle the economic challenges buffeting Nigeria.

Describing the current political temperature in Rivers State as very disturbing and worrisome, Comrade Igbini Odafe says many Nigerians have been reaching out to him as ex-Governor Nyesom “Wike’s man” since the purported assassination attempt on the factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Edison Ehie was reported yesterday.

Speaking with Prime Business Africa on Tuesday, he disclosed that “the result of my independent preliminary investigation into this matter saddens me even though there is no proven evidence yet at my disposal that an Assassination plot was contemplated or attempted.

“But whatever happened that Sunday night in that vicinity was totally unnecessary. It should never have happen at all, not when there is still tension as a result of the unfortunate minor misunderstanding between my former Governor Wike and his political son, Governor Fubara.”

He spoke on a day when security operatives took over the entrance to the State House of Assembly complex providing a cover for the 25 lawmakers opposed to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to hold their sitting. Human and vehicular movements were not allowed on the popular road throughout the duration of the sitting of the lawmakers.

Politics / Naira Redesign: ‘believe It Or Not, Nigeria Is Underdeveloped Country’ – Buhari by Oluchi54: 2:48pm On Nov 21, 2023
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has maintained that he did his best in the eight years that he governed Nigeria, adding that his approval of the Naira redesign policy formulated by the Godwin Emefiele-led Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was to ensure that his “integrity became unquestionable”.

Buhari, while featuring in an interview with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) his first with any media organization since leaving office on May 29, 2023, said he endorsed the controversial naira redesign policy in the twilight of his administration to protect his own integrity and to show Nigerians there was no shortcut to success.

Prime Business Africa recalls that the central bank with the backing of the then president, announced its plans to redesign and circulate a new series of three banknotes out of the existing eight, in October 2022. The redesigned N200, N500, and N1000 notes were due for circulation on December 15, 2022; while the pre-existing notes would remain legal tender until January 31, 2023.

Politics / Lagos Gov Sanwo-olu Under Fire Over ‘n7.5m Fragrance, N18m Christmas Chickens’ by Oluchi54: 11:50am On Nov 21, 2023
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has come under criticism for reportedly approving the sums of N7.5 million to replace liquid fragrance in his office and N3 billion to purchase rechargeable fans for the office of his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat as well as a hefty N18 million for Christmas chickens.

This criticism came on Monday from the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), which asserted that revelations from Funsho Doherty, a chartered accountant and African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in the 18th of March gubernatorial election in Lagos gave the state government away as “irresponsible, irrational, insensitive and absolutely outrageous”.

The candidate had disclosed that other contracts purportedly awarded by the Lagos State’s Public Procurement Agency (PPA) in the second and third quarters of 2023 include approval of over N440 million for the purchase of a new Lexus LX 600 Bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicle for use in the pool of Office of Chief of Staff. The office of the Chief of Staff also got N18.5 million for the supply and distribution of 2,000 Broiler chickens across the local government areas and wards in the state.

Business / Nigeria’s Oil Production Prospects: Meeting OPEC Quota, Economic Growth by Oluchi54: 12:43pm On Nov 16, 2023
In the realm of global oil production, Nigeria stands at a critical juncture, striving to align its output with OPEC quotas while charting a course toward robust economic growth.

According to data released by the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the country’s oil outputs for January February, and March were 1,266,659 bpd; 1,292,240 bpd; and 1,266,737 bpd respectively. Nigeria’s crude oil output however rose to an all-time high of 1.35 million barrels per day in September 2023, as the country pumped its highest volume of crude oil so far since this year.

The latest figures obtained from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, on Wednesday, showed that the country’s output in September was about 14 percent higher than what it pumped in the preceding month of August 2023. Data from the commission indicated that in September, Nigeria’s crude oil production (excluding condensates) was precisely 1,346,562 barrels per day, which was a 165,429bpd increase when compared to the 1,181,133bpd produced in August this year.

But while the current production allocation given to Nigeria by the international producers’ group is 1.74 million barrels per day, the information from the petroleum industry regulator showed that Nigeria was only able to drill 1.34 million bpd in September. Meanwhile, 1.5 million barrels per day was reported for October 2023.

Politics / Your Experience As Lagos Governor Not Enough To Run Federal Govt – Rewane Tells by Oluchi54: 12:32pm On Nov 16, 2023
Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, has advised President Bola Tinubu “to ramp up the skills in understanding federal and national economic dynamics” because experience garnered at state government’s level is not enough to run a federal government.

Prime Business Africa reports that Tinubu is a two-term former governor of Lagos State which he superintended over from 1999 to 2007. He had also served as a senator in the aborted Third Republic. Tinubu was sworn in as Nigeria’s 16th President on May 29, 2023, and has since constituted his government.

Presenting a paper yesterday at the November edition of the Lagos Business School Breakfast Session titled “Policy Direction Misaligned with Economic Destination”, Rewane observed that Tinubu’s “management team is vast and experienced in subnational economic policies” and warned that, “transplanting a state team to run a federal structure has serious limitations.”

Nigeria’s Defense Minister, Bello Matawalle, has unveiled a plan to increase the country’s oil production level to 1.9 million barrels per day, marking an improvement from the current 1.5 million barrels per day, as reported by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in October 2023.

The Defense Minister attributed this positive outlook to the federal government’s commitment to combat crude oil theft, which has long plagued the Niger Delta region and hindered oil production.

Matawalle highlighted the success of the government’s efforts, stating, “Before now, due to oil theft activities in the Niger Delta region, oil production dropped to about one million barrels per day. But production has increased with the Federal Government’s actions and the onslaught of the combined military against oil thieves.”

He emphasized the collaborative approach taken by various security forces in the region and the importance of intelligence sharing. “Most of the illegal pipelines were destroyed, most of the people were arrested, and we are okay with the level we are today. We work together by sharing intelligence; we shall continue working together,” Matawalle noted in an interview with NAN.

Business / Nigerian Govt To Hold NNPC Accountable For Refinery Rehabilitation By 2024- Lokp by Oluchi54: 1:42pm On Nov 06, 2023
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, has voiced the Federal government’s commitment to holding the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) accountable for the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries, as scheduled, by the end of 2024.

Lokpobiri delivered this message during a press interaction over the weekend, following a three-day retreat for Ministers, Special Advisers, and other presidential aides at the Conference Centre of State House, Abuja.

The spotlight on NNPC’s responsibility for rehabilitating the three refineries in Nigeria has intensified in response to the ongoing fuel scarcity issues and the government’s drive to increase reliance on natural gas. The Senate’s establishment of an ad-hoc committee to investigate NNPC’s spending of N11.35 trillion on Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) of the refineries further underscores the significance of this issue.

When questioned about the rehabilitation timeline, Minister Lokpobiri provided an insight into the progress, stating, “Yes, the rehabilitation of the refineries, if you could remember, was started by the previous administration, and as part of the president’s directive, I have gone round all the refineries, and from what they have briefed me, Port Harcourt has 3 phases, so Phase 1 will be ready by the end of this year. I am not the one who is directly in charge of rehabilitation, it is the NNPC, and they have told me, and I am holding them accountable.”

Politics / Naira Hits All-time Low As Exchange Rate Dips To N993/$1 On Official NAFEM by Oluchi54: 1:34pm On Oct 31, 2023
The Nigerian naira has reached an unprecedented low in the official market, as the exchange rate plummeted to N993 per US dollar on the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), marking a colossal 20.5% depreciation.

This fall surpasses the previous lowest point of N848/$1 recorded just two weeks ago, which, at the time, had already raised alarm bells with its 8.17% depreciation in a single day. The decline has left both experts and citizens alike questioning government’s efforts in stabilizing the naira.

Furthermore, the official market saw a sharp drop in trading volume, with a turnover of only $88.3 million, representing a 66% decrease from the $259.8 million recorded just last Friday. Intra-day highs and lows painted a grim picture, fluctuating between N998/$1 and N475/$1, with the latter being particularly shocking, offering a N523/$1 discount compared to the closing rate.

Politics / Estonia Welcomes Non-eu Citizens For Seasonal Employment Opportunities by Oluchi54: 11:33am On Oct 31, 2023
Estonia, member of the European Union, has extended a warm invitation to citizens from outside the EU, offering them the opportunity to live and work as seasonal employees within its borders.

The main reason for this initiative is the Seasonal Worker Visa. Employers in Estonia are encouraged to extend job offers exclusively to individuals originating from non-European countries.

This visa allows seasonal workers to engage in employment for up to 270 days within a continuous 365-day period, with the option for renewal. Officially recognized within the framework of the Government of the Republic Regulation, it opens the door to various seasonal jobs.

These seasonal roles encompass:
Crop and animal production, hunting, and related service activities.

Fishing and aquaculture.

Forestry and logging.

Accommodation service activities.

Food and beverage service activities.

Food production.

Manufacture of soft drinks.

Business / Africa Must Break Internal Visa Barriers For Shared Prosperity – Editorial by Oluchi54: 11:19am On Oct 31, 2023
Africa – the world’s second-largest continent with 54 recognized countries – has again been reminded of a low-hanging fruit that must be plucked in the continent’s enlightened self-interest. This was as President William Ruto of Kenya told an international conference in Congo-Brazzaville that his country is set to end visa requirements for all African visitors by the end of this year. Kenya was in 2022 ranked 31st on Africa’s Visa Openness Index which measures the extent to which each country in Africa is open to visitors from other African countries. President Ruto is now poised to improve this ranking, with the realization that allowing extant visa restrictions on fellow Africans was bad for business.

In the words of Ruto: “When people cannot travel, businesspeople cannot travel, entrepreneurs cannot travel, we all become net losers.” The loud cheers and standing ovation his speech got from the summiteers point to the fact that free movement across Africa is exactly what informed minds yearn for the continent. However, as desirable as this is, visa processes and processing in Africa remain a complicated web of regulations and agreements. This is despite the fact that visa-free travel within the continent has been a goal of the African Union (AU) over the past decade. The AU launched its African passport in 2016 so that all African citizens can travel across the continent without visas – despite this, that passport has remained widely unacceptable.

Politics / Peter Obi Schools Oxford University On Why Nigeria Should Be More Productive by Oluchi54: 12:51pm On Oct 30, 2023
The presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25, 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi has posited that Nigeria “should be more productive than Europe” based on her youthful population and the fact that Europe’s 1,152,000km landmass is a little over Nigeria’s 923,000km.

Regretting that poor leadership has bobbled the progress of his native country, Obi regretted that Europe’s three biggest economies being: Germany, the United Kingdom, and France with a population of about 216million people have a GDP almost 25 times the GDP of Nigeria with virtually the same demography.
Michael Jude Nwolisa, who is the Personal Assistant on Media to the former Anambra Governor, issued a statement on Sunday, reporting this as part of his principal’s address in England where he spoke as a guest at the Celebration of Black History Month by the black community at Oxford University, over the weekend.

In Obi’s words, “Germany has $4.4 trillion with a land mass of 349, 223km, plus a population of about 84m and France has a GDP of $3.049. and 551695km land mass, plus a population of about 54m the UK has a GDP of $3.3.., and a land mass of 243,610km with a population of about 67m while Nigeria has a land mass of 923 769km and a GDP of $489.80 billion.”

Business / Mike Adenuga Loses $300m As Net-worth Further Declines To $3.3bn by Oluchi54: 1:35pm On Oct 23, 2023
Three months after boasting of an estimated net worth of $3.6bn, Chairman of Conoil and the founder of Globacom, Mike Adenuga, has lost $300 million in his net-worth, now valued at $3.3bn, Nairametrics reports.

The recent decline can be attributed to the performance of his holdings in Conoil and the persistent fall in the value of the Nigerian naira against the United States dollar.

Adenuga, who is the third richest person in Nigeria, amassed his wealth through his ventures in the telecommunications and oil production sectors. Globacom, his mobile phone network, has millions of subscribers and controls a large chunk of the market. Additionally, his oil exploration company, Conoil Producing, manages six oil blocks in the Niger Delta.

The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Nigeria, as of October 19, 2023, stands at N860/$. The exchange rate on the peer-to-peer (P2P) market, where forex is covertly traded through the crypto market, suggests a steady decline, with N1,186/$1 being quoted.
