Uriah headed to the edge of the forest to check on the traps. The boys in his village usually played at the edge of the forest and also set traps to catch small animals.

“You be thief,” the boys shouted.

“I no be thief,” the boy in their middle replied.

“Yes you are,” they shouted at him, hitting him with sticks.

Uriah saw a boy he had never seen before surrounded by 7 boys from his village. The 7 boys were hitting him with sticks.
Without thinking, he ran into their midst and used his body to shield the boy .

“Enough,” he shouted, “una wan kill am?”

“He is a thief, I saw him close to the traps,” screamed one for the boys.

“I did not steal from you. I was unsure how you treated strangers. So I hid to wait for night time to continue my journey. I swear I did not touch your meat nor your trap,” the stranger replied, wiping the blood flowing down his forehead. He was on his knees breathing heavily from the blows he had received.

“Liar, Uriah get out of the way so we can kill him,” shouted Daraksu. He and his twin brother were part of the 7 boys.

“Enough,” repeated Uriah, “you have no right to kill him.”

“Who made you the lawyer of an Hebrew?” Inarahsu asked.

“And who made you guys the judge, jury and executioner?” Uriah asked. “Don’t you know the Hebrews conquered our forefathers when they fought against each other. The Hebrews only allowed us stay on this land because we agreed to serve them.”

“The more reason we should kill him to atone for the sins of the Hebrews against us Hitties,” said Daraksu.

“What do you think would happen if word gets out that you killed an Hebrew?” Uriah fired back.

“Dead men don’t talk. Now stand aside Uriah or die with him,” shouted the twin brothers.

“No,” said Uriah, facing the boys with fist clenched by his side.

Inarahsu moved forward from Uriah’s left and swung a stick at his head. Uriah ducked under the swing, sidestepped to his left and threw a punch with his left hand. The punch connected with the right cheek bone of Inarahsu and he went down screaming and holding his face.

His twin brother, Daraksu, rushed forward to hit Uriah. He was already swinging his stick as Uriah turned to face him. So Uriah stepped closer to him and blocked the blow with the inside of his right arm. He then threw a left punch at the nose of Daraksu, who went down like he was hit by a truck.

There was a hushed silence as Daraksu slowly stood up and touched his blood spewing nose in shock. He then turned and ran towards home screaming in agony. His twin brother ran after him crying and touching his right cheek.

The other boys did not wait to receive their own punches. They dropped their sticks and ran off in different directions.

Uriah lifted up the stranger who was still on his knees. “Can you walk?” He asked.

“Yes.”

“My name is Uriah. What’s your name?”

“Joab.”

“Today we are going to war,” they sang.

“But,” cried one.

“Today is not a good day to die,” they responded.

“Why,” shouted one.

“The Lord of Host is with us,” they responded.

“And so,” cried another.

“We will slash, hack and bash,” cried all.

“And then,” came the cry.

“We will take the spoils of war,” they sang.

“And?”

“Go back home praising our God.”

“And then?”

“Go home to “know” our wives,” the men cried out and then shouted loudly.

It was the battle cry they usually sang before a major fight.

“It is time to bleed or be bled,” said Gareb as he and Uriah helped each other put on their armour.

“It’s never a good day to die,” responded Uriah, as his mind wandered back to the strategy meeting that held early that morning.

“What do we know about the people of Ammon? Joab asked.

“We know they will come out to fight and not hide behind their walls,” came the reply from Zelek.

“Their most valiant soldiers are usually sent after their archers. But in this instance, we expect them to stay back to repel our attacks if and when we get past the archers,” added Eliam, the father of Bathsheba.

“How do we get past the archers with minimal casualty?” Joab asked.

“We can do a mock charge to engage their archers. That way we ascertain their shooting range and brig our archers into play,” suggested Joseb.

“Hmm, I like the mock charge,” stated Joab.

“I think we should do 3 waves of mock charge. 1000 men each, to really get them worried. Since we outnumber their 10,000 soldiers 5 to 1,” said Abishai, brother of Joab.

“Numbers don’t win wars,” stated Shammah.

“Yes, they don’t, superior strategy do. So we will also flank them on both sides. Once their archers are actively engaged with the waves of mock charge, we will attack them from both sides. This should confuse them and allow us bring our archers in range and into play,” said Abishai.

“This sounds good to me. Or what do you say guys?” Joab asked.

They nodded in agreement.

“I will lead the first mock charge,” stated Asahel, brother of Joab.

“And I the second wave,” said Eleazar.

“No, Asahel and Eleazar will be in charge of the 2nd and 3rd wave respectively,” responded Joab.

“So who leads the first charge?” Eliam asked.

Joab looked at him and said, “Uriah.”

(About 30 years earlier)

"Hey Uriah, no farm today?"

He looked to his right and saw Inarahsu and Daraksu walking towards him. They were twin brothers and the sons of one of the richest merchant in their village.

"No, no farm today," he replied, looking at Inarahsu as the twins stopped in front of him.

"Why? Don't you want to be a farmer like your father?" Asked Daraksu.

"I don't want to be a farmer."

"But your father is a farmer, you will probably end up a farmer," insisted Inarahsu.

"No," responded Uriah sternly.

The boys looked at him strangely.

"Why don't you want to be a farmer?"

"I've not seen myself as a farmer in my dreams."

One of the boys laughed and said, "so you think you are now like Joseph the dreamer because your papa give you Hebrew name. No deceive yourself, you be Hittie not an Hebrew."

Daraksu added, "I can't wait to see your papa's face when you tell him you don't want to be a farmer."

Uriah looked at them and said slowly, "someday you will hear and see my greatness."

The 2 boys looked at each other and then laughed so hard, they fell over rolling on the floor.

Uriah walked away from them, he knew he wanted more than this life of being a farmer. He just was not sure what else he would do.

Uriah was the 3rd boy out of 5 children. He had two elder brothers and two younger sisters. It was less than two years age difference between each of the children.

His father had a farm and his two brothers were already working with his father, as well as, developing their own farm. It was expected that Uriah would also start on his own farm once he reached the age of 18. For now, he was mainly in charge of the two Cows that lived in their home.

'You are back early," his mother remarked as he stormed into the common room.

"I don't want to be a farmer," he replied with teeth clenched.

She turned and looked at him. She them moved close to him and hugged him. At five feet 9 inches, he was the shortest male in the family but he was still taller than his mother.

She held him close and said softly, "when the voice of greatness calls you, be unafraid to answer." She drew back, smiled and said aloud, "now go milk the Cows else you no go chop tonight."

He smiled back and went to milk the cows.

"Hey bro, welcome back," Gareb said as he entered the tent. "I heard them hailing you earlier but I was depositing manure into the soil. How you dey?"

They shook hands and hugged.

"I dey alright my brother, all correct, no shaking," replied Uriah.

He sat down on his bed facing Gareb, who leaned on the table.

"How was the City and home front?" Gareb asked.

"Fine."

"So what did the King want to see you for?"

"To be honest, I really don't know. We did not talk about anything serious or discreet. We did more drinking than talking. I guess he misses the Warfront," Uriah replied.

They both laughed.

"But at least you got to gum body and had a nice time with madam, " Gareb said as he smiled and winked.

"Nah, I did not go home. I slept at the door of the King's house with all the servants of my King."

"Kilode? Why? You for go enjoy wifey's company"

"My guy, the King suggested that too. But I told him that the ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my Lord Joab and the servants of my King are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? As the King's soul lives, I will not do that," said Uriah.

"Wow," exclaimed Gareb as he looked at Uriah in astonishment.

Uriah added, "I just did not feel right about it. I had a bad feeling about the whole visitation and insistence that I go home. I would rather be here at the battle front with you guys then be at home frolicking with wifey."

They both laughed.

Just then, Zaharai, the armour bearer of Joab, entered into the tent. "Uriah, my Lord Joab will see you now."

Together they marched to the tent of Joab.

"Good day sir," Uriah said as he entered the tent.

"Welcome back Soldier," Joab replied and added, "how was the home front?"

"All correct Sir."

"I am sure you enjoyed Madam's cooking and the after hours things," Joab said with a smile.

Uriah smiled, but said nothing.

"Any news from my King David?" Joab asked.

"Yes sir, he said to give you a letter," Uriah replied. He removed a sealed letter from the waist pouch and placed it in Joab's outstretched hand.

Joab checked to be sure the seal was unbroken. He then opened the letter, read it and frowned. He looked up to see Uriah watching him and their eyes locked for a few seconds. Out of respect, Uriah blinked and looked away.

"Anything the matter sir?" Uriah asked.

Joab turned his back on him and said, "go back to your tent soldier, I will call you if I need you."

Uriah hesitated for a moment. He was sure Joab's voice sounded like a man in pain and in tears. "Ok sir," he said and left the tent.

Joab held the letter in both hands and raised it above his head. "Why my King? Why?" He muttered as tears flowed down his cheeks.

Joab cried all night and found no sleep or rest to console his troubled soul.

Business / Leveraging Spoken Word Poetry To Solve Your Business Challenges by olulu(m): 3:31pm On Mar 19, 2020
The challenges CoronaVirus (COVID-19) will pose to businesses is one that the world is yet to witness. There is no template to follow, so you can’t use yesterday’s anointing for today’s miracles, meaning, “you can’t use yesterday’s solutions for today’s problems.”

Most people look, but few see. Thus, they miss out on great opportunities and progress because they rather stick with over used methods of doing business/ things.

If your business doesn’t change strategy, it will struggle to survive this season, and unfortunately, it may go extinct.

People are going to stay home more and consume more content, so content marketing is key. But what kind of content will you present to them to consume and patronize your business?

“If you want to build a marketing asset you need to invest in connection and other non-transferable properties. If people care, you have got a brand.” – Seth Godin.

We can help your business have a reason to stay in people’s faces and dominate attention.

We are story tellers and we tell it in words (www.wordup411ng.com), videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/olulu4eva/videos) and via audio platforms (www.poetreel.com)

Literature / The Risk Pyramid And Spoken Word Poetry By Olumide Holloway by olulu(m): 2:38pm On Jan 22, 2020
My first credit analysis training was by SLS aka HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. This was in 2008 when he was the CRO i.e Chief Risk Officer of a first generation bank in Nigeria.

The main lesson of that day was the application of the Risk Pyramid in our credit reviews. This lesson stayed with me till date.

Ok, so in your in mind you are wondering that now that I’m a full time poet, wetin concern Risk Pyramid with spoken word poetry?

I believe the Risk Pyramid affects every aspect of life, thus even poets need it to plan and strategize.

So let’s get right into it.

The Risk Pyramid is made up of 5 levels.
At the base you have, country risk, next / on top of it is industry risk, then management/ non-financial risk, then financial risk and at the top of the pyramid is product risk.
As a spoken word poet, you are the product.

/ \
/ \
/ Product \
/ Financial \
/Non-financial\
/ Industry \
/ Country \
—————————-

Let’s start from the base:

1) Country risk: this is general to everyone, but the interpretation differ from person to person and industry to industry. Country risks can be categorized under PESTLE.

PESTLE is broken down as follows:

Political
Economic
Social
Technological
Legal
Environmental

Political – as a poet, do you know how new government policies affects you?
E.g. the proposed Hate Speech bill – if your Poetry video goes viral, can your words be classified as “hate speech.”
What about taxation? Hope you know the tax net is widening to capture as many as possible.
Change of Government, insecurity, lack of power etc all come under political issues.

Economic: this has to do the economy of the Nation, as it relates to CBN policies, inflation rate, deposit rate, stock market, money market, unemployment, purchasing power etc.
Two key questions to ask even if everything above sounds technical are, are the middle class still in the middle?
If not, why?

Social: for this one I will drill down to just two major segments. These are Demographic and Psychographic factors.
Demographic relates to age, gender, religion, education level, income etc.
Psychographic relates to values, interests, lifestyle, attitude, opinion etc.

To increase your chances of success/ sale/ growth, knowing and attending to the psychographic factors to get customers and clients would help you more.

Technological: how are you leveraging technology to grow your career?

Legal: do you have a lawyer or lawyer friend who helps you draft agreements and read through the contracts from.other parties before you sign?

Environmental: issues affecting your physical location e.g. weather.

Next on the Risk Pyramid is:

2) Industry risk: let me illustrate this with something I heard recently.

A poet performed at an event and was confronted by a certain class of people after his performance. He was told that if he had done the poem at another event, his poetry career would be over.

Personally, I don’t believe flesh and blood can end any poet’s career.

But as a poet, please know that reputational risk is a key issue in any industry.

Also, there are always “power centers” in every industry, and you don’t have to be James to bond with them. In this context, power centers are people not places. But note, not all power centers are for you, so choose wisely.

Lemme stop here for now.

If all what I’ve said thus far is making sense to you, do let me know so I can continue.

Literature / What Is The ROI On Sponsoring A Spoken Word Poetry Event? By Olumide Holloway by olulu(m): 2:22pm On Jan 22, 2020
Last night, I was at an event in Ikeja and was discussing with a fellow poet and he said the following….

“I am into branding and media, so I get firms asking for advice on events to support/ sponsor to promote their brands and products., pt I hesitate to recommend poetry events because I don’t know what to answer if they ask for the ROI of sponsoring a poetry event.”

Hmm, interesting perspective, right?
So let’s dig into this and start with, what is ROI?

ROI – tries to measure the amount of return on a particular investment, relative to the investment’s cost. To calculate ROI, the benefit (or return) of an investment is divided by the cost of the investment. The result is expressed as a percentage or a ratio.

Ok, now we know what ROI means. But whats the ROI on sponsoring a spoken word poetry event?

Permit me to use an event I am used to, (i.e. War Of Words – Slam Poetry Competition), to illustrate the ROI on sponsoring a spoken word poetry event, using the following metrics:

1. Brand visibility/ Brand equity – how much would a brand spend to produce over 100 professional videos within 2 months. As well as, upload and share on major social media channels. Each video would have a backdrop with the brand’s logo, and/ or product placement. Also, more than half of the 100 videos would be themed (i.e. based on the sponsor’s slogan). The themed videos are infomercials for the brand.

2. Content strategy – daily uploads and shares of videos clips, pictures, audio content and words that generate controversy, conversation and engagement.

3. Targeted marketing – the consumers in this niche can be termed “mass literates.” And we know 90% of sales is mainly about the heart and not logic. The art form creates an emotional bond between the mass literates and the brand.

4. Consumers perception – it makes the sponsor to be seen as the “great” one who aided the birth of a “new” industry. An industry that entertains, educates and elevates (i.e. via employment, entrepreneurship, emotional intelligence, emotional therapy etc).

Other metrics of stating the ROI of sponsorship include: community goodwill, efficient lead generation, sales goals, audience insights and business relationship/ collaboration.

I hope you were able to decipher the sense in all what I stated. If not, we can sit down over a bottle or two and I will further break it all down into Naira and Kobo for easy comprehension.

Literature / The War Of Rats By Olumide Holloway by olulu(m): 11:34pm On Jul 12, 2019
The battle with rats started two weeks ago when my son left the front door open after we came back from mid week service. I think two medium sized rats got into the apartment before I noticed the door was left open.

I can only assume the rats were a couple and the female was already pregnant because three days later, we had more intruders in the apartment.

I went on the attack using rat gum (aka rat trap), rat poison and going on rat hunt (with two big brooms and wearing a heavy boot). The rats suffered heavy casualties.

One day, I heard some scrapping at a corner where I had placed a rat gum. I got there to see one of the (rat) couple trapped on it. I noticed it was desperately struggling to trying to escape so I quickly got a broom to subdue it. As I got ready to strike, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, a smaller rat limped slowly and stood between me and the trapped rat.

I froze for a minute or two, as the smaller rat stood on its hind legs and raised the front legs, as if begging for the life of the bigger rat. The smaller rat had a twisted leg so it was quite slow and would have been easy to dispatch to rat heaven.

I put the broom down, picked the rat gum from a vacant end and closed it together with the rat in it. I put it in the bin and took the bin to dispose of it outside the apartment.

I came back in to see the smaller rat limping away from the front door. But before it disappeared around a corner, it stopped for a brief moment, looked me in the eye and nodded its gratitude. Though, I could chased it down, yet I let it live for now to probably be killed another day.

I forgot about the event and the rat war went quiet for a while.

Some days later, I came home from work late, tired and hungry. But my wife and the children were already asleep, and no cooked food was available to eat. I remembered sitting in front of the TV for a while, then I went to the kitchen and came back to sit in front of the TV.

I felt my toes been nibbled, so I opened my eyes a little. I had fallen asleep lying on the couch with the TV on. I closed my eyes to continue the sleep and again I felt the nibbling. I shook my legs, wriggled my toes and turned on my side to resume my sleep. Suddenly I jumped upright as something bit down on my big toe.

It was the small rat.

I froze as the rat stared at me, jumped down from the couch and limped towards the kitchen.

I went after it to smash the head in and caught up with it by the kitchen door. Then I saw smoke everywhere, and felt the flames coming from on top of the gas cooker. I remembered I had put noodles on fire earlier and now the pot was on fire. Quickly I got the fire extinguisher and put out the flames.

I sat on the floor as the adrenaline seeped out of me. I felt the rat on my leg and carried it.

"Thank you," I said staring at it. It looked back, nodded, jumped down and limped away.
