Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things.

LiteratureCan We Get 1,000 Poems From 1,000 Poets In Nigeria? #naijapoetryhascomeofage by olulu(op): 11:12am On Jul 21, 2014
Can we get 1,000 poems from 1,000 poets in Nigeria?

#NaijaPoetryHasComeOfAge

Someone once told me, “I can’t see the “poetic” talents we have in Nigeria.”
Well, truth is, you can’t see what you don’t look for.

The recent Prof. Wole Soyinka at 80 years celebration which featured 70 Performance/ Spoken Word poets from all over Nigeria, has shown that poets are abundant resources in Nigeria. You just have to give them a reason to “unearth” themselves. After all, gold, diamond and the likes are not on found on the surface.

Fortunately and unfortunately, life is sometimes a game of numbers, so now, it is time for poets in Nigeria to stand up and be counted.

Can we get 1,000 poems from 1,000 poets in 10 days?‪

This is to show that Nigerian Poetry Industry Have Come Of Age‬ and We Are A Force To Reckon With

Thus, starting from when you read this, tell a poet to tell a poet to tell a poet to post their poems via this link:

http://wordupnaija.tv/forums/topic/can-we-get-1000-poems-from-1000-poets-in-nigeria-%E2%80%AA%E2%80%8Enaijapoetryhascomeofage%E2%80%AC/

Please ensure you register and login to post your poems. To register go to http://wordupnaija.tv/forum/

The rules are:
It is one poem per poet.
Each poem must not be more than 15 lines
The title/ subject matter for the poems should be, “Poetry is……… “

However, you are free to break all above the rules except one. That is, one poem per poet.

The poems will later be published as a poetry anthology before the end of 2014, more details later.

Are you ready?

Let the “POEM-fest” begin…!!!!!!

LiteratureSpoken Word Is Not POETRY. by olulu(op): 1:20pm On Nov 27, 2013
Spoken Word is Not POETRY.

Written by William Saint George

This post is rewritten from a previous one that appeared on my personal blog. There, I tackled the general issue of art, but delved quickly into spoken word and poetry. The argument was spirited, quite hilarious to some people, and largely unguarded. In this rewriting, I will maintain my argument in the spirit in which it was put forth, but the views will be more balanced and wholesome to the general public. And so we begin:

I’ve not had the guts to come out with this statement yet, because my arguments were not fully thought out, and most people hate being told that their work is shoddy (crappy, actually, but we’ll leave it at that). With this in mind, I’ve kept my trap shut, but my eyes and mind open. Now, I can come forth and proudly say that I think little of Spoken Word “poetry”, that I condemn many artistes who pander their art in the good name of poetry, and generally do obscene things on stage and feel good about it. I’m not against all that, but certain lines must be drawn, in the holy name of art.
First, and most importantly, Spoken Word is not Poetry.

The phrase violence against women is a technical term used to collectively refer to violent acts that are primarily or exclusively committed against women. Similar to a hate crime, which it is sometimes considered this type of violence targets a specific group with the victim's gender as a primary motive.
The United Nations General Assembly defines "violence against women" as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." The 1993 Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women noted that this violence could be perpetrated by assailants of either gender, family members and even the "State" itself.
Worldwide governments and organizations actively work to combat violence against women through a variety of programs. A UN resolution designated 25 November as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

First of all, I don't know why you guys chose to start 2pm, maybe it is about venue or logistics but that's an initial turn off. We all know how these things can be and when you are having fun, time goes fast and before you know, it is 6pm, then 7pm and it is dark(remember this is Lagos and a lot of your audience might not own cars).

I mentioned earlier and Jumoke said it too. Timing is important. I came from a far place but I made sure I got there just some minutes before 2 for a reason: I wanted to see how serious it is cos your being prompt might dictate how people (like me) take you.

The logistics were not in place even when the event started as the lightning was an issue (I multitask a lot and so soak in details which is why I wander a lot) even until the end of the event making the stage somehow dull.......

And you should have put a little banner outside. I was not familiar with the place and did not fancy asking strangers for direction. I almost passed the venues without even guessing that it was the place. I had to study the house number and I saw the place looked like an artist coven so i guessed it was it.

Outside those, which I believe could be easily fixed before the next event, it was wow!!!!. I had tons of fun and I enjoyed myself. I particularly enjoyed Donna's talk starting from "page to stage" and the different stages and phases involved. How to get in character and also how your tone and body language dictates the tune of your performance(recital).

She really spoke on a lot of valuable issue that made loads of sense and it was cool.

Jumoke was.......great. I loved that she spoke from a managerial point of view and I believe events managers have a lot to learn from what she spoke about. It was really cool sitting there to talk about how to plan them and arrange the artistes and make sure you don't have a supporting cast "steal" the show as that is important.

The guy who spoke on brand nailed it. Totally, he was concise and precise.

The last dude in the jersey was just fun to listen to. He was inspirational and would lift the spirits of a lot of peep there.

I also love the venue. The atmosphere their is like I said earlier an artist's coven. The chairs were made of semi-carved wood, everything looked so natural and apart from the smell of stale cigarette (ewwww), it was great.

All in all, I had fun but cos of the time(I stay far away), I could not stay back to meet people and a lot of peep might have that issue too but it was cool. I will defo come again to enjoy more talks.

And oh, the dude that spoke last......that guy is OMG......he reminded me of Sage
Thanks for the feedback, we will work on the areas we did not perform well enough and improve on the other areas too.
The last guy that performed is called Plumbline, this is one of his performance at WORD UP Volume 2
