Breaking the Backbone of Banditry

In a time when many citizens had resigned to a state of fear and despair due to the unchecked rampage of armed bandits, the tide has undeniably begun to turn under the strategic leadership and unwavering resolve of the current administration. A significant part of this turnaround must be attributed to the remarkable efforts of the National Security Adviser (NSA), whose coordination, policy direction, and operational synergy with security agencies have yielded visible and commendable results.

Since assuming office, the NSA has overseen a holistic and intelligence-driven approach to dismantling the infrastructure of terror that bandit kingpins once operated with impunity. Through coordinated military operations, precise intelligence deployment, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration, some of the most notorious architects of violence in the country have been neutralized.

Among those sent to the great beyond are infamous figures such as Ali Kachalla (Ƙawaje), Dogo Kwaddi, Lawali Dodo, Ɓoderi, Sani Wala-birki, Kachallah Hana-Zuwa, Damina, Kachalla Sani Dangote, and Halilu Sububu, to name just a few. These individuals were not mere criminals; they were warlords who held entire communities hostage, orchestrating mass kidnappings, brutal killings, and economic sabotage. Their removal from the battlefield has significantly deflated the ranks of organized banditry.

This list, which also includes Baleri, Modi Modi, Kachalla Mai Shayi, Ibrahim Nagure, and Hassan Ɗantawaye, reflects more than just successful raids — it signifies the steady restoration of peace, security, and confidence in many once-afflicted rural areas across the North-West and North-Central regions.

The fact remains: while banditry has not been completely eradicated, the death of these top commanders and their foot soldiers marks a major strategic blow to the capacity and morale of these criminal networks. It has also afforded many communities the breathing space they need to rebuild and reclaim their lives.

We must, therefore, acknowledge and commend the NSA for his pivotal role in shaping and implementing the security architecture that has produced these results. His silent but effective diplomacy, insistence on intelligence-led operations, and commitment to national stability have played a key role in ensuring that Nigeria no longer negotiates with terror — but defeats it.

May these victories serve as both a reassurance to the people and a warning to the remnants of these criminal gangs: Nigeria will not surrender an inch of her territory to lawlessness.

To the NSA — thank you for your service, for your resolve, and for your results.

NASENI Excited Over President Tinubu’s “Nigeria First Policy”

The Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Suleiman Halilu, has expressed his agency’s excitement over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Nigeria First Policy,” stating that the policy will engineer Nigeria’s industrial revolution and boost the country’s economy.

In a statement released to the press on Sunday, Mr. Halilu stated that the country was blessed with entrepreneurs, industrialists, and technology talents who need the necessary policy and government push to succeed in their endeavors.

He stated that this policy, which prioritizes locally made goods and homegrown solutions in all government procurements, will compel government agencies to lead the way in driving patronage in the local economy.

“With Mr. President’s directive to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to revise and enforce procurement guidelines to favor local suppliers, we are going to see a boost in patronage of our local manufacturers,” Mr. Halilu said.

“Government is a major purchaser of equipment, electronics, and general goods and services, and this will translate to a boost in demand,” he continued.

“I must state that this policy directive is forward-thinking and revolutionary, especially for us in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. At NASENI, we have been undeterred in our resolve to both entrench a culture of patronage of local manufacturing, as well as drive the necessary awareness and leadership needed to achieve this.

“Our products, ranging from assembled-in-Nigeria vehicles, to energy systems, to smart irrigation systems, to mobile devices and laptops, among several others, are world-class and a better local alternative to most of their foreign counterparts.

“In our efforts at driving patronage and understanding consumer sentiments on locally manufactured products, we commenced the NASENI Made-in-Nigeria Strategic Focus Group and awareness meetings across the country. At these meetings, which have brought together experts, academics, government and regulatory officials, manufacturers, industrialists, civil societies, traders, and young entrepreneurs, we have been able to gauge some of the challenges facing patronage, while also creating the much-needed awareness and sentiments that drive patronage.

The EVC/CEO of NASENI stated that his agency was going to ensure that it would be at the forefront of ensuring that the objectives of President Tinubu’s “Nigeria First Policy” are actualized.

While calling on local manufacturers and industries to take ownership of President Tinubu’s directive, Mr. Halilu stated that they must take the President’s directive as a challenge by delivering quality products with sophisticated branding that would meet consumer demands accordingly.

“This is a challenge to all local producers. Mr. President did not open the door wide for us to be patronized by the country while abandoning quality and standards. We, as manufacturers and industrialists, must live up to the faith President Bola Tinubu has in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.

“That means quality and standards must not be compromised. We must produce goods that are both qualitative and competitive, and which can compare favorably with their imported counterparts.

“I believe that we will not let the President down. NASENI has recently toured most parts of the country in its Made-in-Nigeria Strategic Focus Group and awareness meetings. We have seen the capacity, passion, and competence of local manufacturers, and believe that they are capable of filling in the gap and providing local content for government procurement.”

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure is mandated to foster a robust science and engineering infrastructure in Nigeria, focusing on capital goods research, production, and reverse engineering to drive home-initiated industrialization.

Through its strategic focus group meetings held across states like Katsina, Lagos, Anambra, Delta, Kano, Kaduna, and Ogun throughout the first and second quarters of 2025, NASENI has engaged stakeholders, including manufacturers, academia, and industrialists, to address production challenges, boost local innovation, and enhance the patronage of Nigerian-made goods.

These meetings have also focused on harnessing local talent, scaling innovation, and ensuring market adoption of indigenous products that meet global standards.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, earlier last week, directed the implementation of a “Nigeria First Policy,” which mandates the Bureau of Public Procurement to create a framework that enforces procurement guidelines in favor of local manufacturers.

The directive also requests that a register of Nigerian manufacturers and service providers be maintained by the BPP.

WALE EDUN CHARGES FINANCE LEADERSHIP TO CHAMPION ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION

In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s economic trajectory, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has urged top management staff of the Ministry to harness their expertise in driving economic acceleration and fiscal consolidation for the benefit of all Nigerians.

This charge was delivered at the opening of the 2025 Ministerial Performance Management Retreat, themed “Strengthening Performance Management for Fiscal Stability”, held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yola, the capital of Adamawa State.

Declaring the two-day retreat open, the Minister called for renewed commitment, measurable impact, and sustained reform in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He stressed the pivotal role of senior management in shaping outcomes that reflect the administration’s economic priorities.

“The expectations of government and the Nigerian people are higher than ever. You are the engine room of policy execution. The performance of this Ministry is, to a large extent, a reflection of your effectiveness,” Edun said.

He reaffirmed the President’s commitment to lifting millions out of poverty through inclusive growth, noting that while macroeconomic stability has been restored, the ambition now is to accelerate GDP growth to 7% annually.

The Minister also extended his appreciation to the Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for hosting the retreat and acknowledged the impressive strides being recorded under his administration.

In a goodwill message delivered by the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, Governor Fintiri lauded the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun; the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Permanent Secretaries; and the Ministry’s senior management for their commitment to national economic transformation.

“Adamawa remains committed to national development goals. We are honoured to host this retreat, which underscores the importance of aligning local governance with federal fiscal reforms,” the Deputy Governor stated.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, underscored the urgency of institutionalising a performance-driven culture in the Ministry:

“As we navigate the realities of limited resources, rising public expectations, and the imperative for efficient governance, performance management becomes not only relevant but essential to our fiscal stability and collective success.”

She emphasised the need for shared responsibility in embedding a robust Performance Management System in line with the Ministry’s mandate to manage the nation’s finances in an open, transparent, and accountable manner to achieve national development goals.

The retreat brought together Directors across the Federal Ministry of Finance and other key stakeholders to review strategic progress, share insights, and sharpen implementation capacity.

As Nigeria forges ahead on the path of reform and economic revitalisation, the Honourable Minister’s call to action serves as a powerful rallying point for the Ministry’s leadership to deliver growth, stability, and shared prosperity.

Strengthening West Africa’s Defenses Against Terrorism: NSA Mallam Nuhu Ribadu Calls for Collaboration Against IEDs

In an address at the Regional Stakeholders’ Meeting on Consolidating Collaborative Efforts to Prevent and Counter the Acquisition and Use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by Terrorist Groups, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has urged West African nations to unite in developing robust mechanisms to combat the growing threat of IEDs used by terrorist organizations.

The meeting, held to foster regional collaboration, brought together top experts, security officials, and policymakers from Nigeria and across West Africa. It aimed at devising innovative strategies to disrupt the production, trafficking, and deployment of IEDs, which have become a devastating tool in the hands of terrorist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Improvised explosive devices have wreaked havoc across West Africa, claiming countless lives, destroying communities, and undermining regional stability. These low-cost, highly destructive weapons are often crafted from readily available materials, making them a weapon of choice for terrorists. From roadside bombs targeting security forces to suicide attacks in crowded markets, IEDs have become a ready weapon for terrorist groups.

Mallam Ribadu emphasized the need for enhanced intelligence sharing, improved border security, and advanced technological solutions to detect and neutralize IEDs before they can be used. He also called for greater community engagement to raise awareness and prevent the radicalization that fuels terrorism.

Thursday, May 8, 2025: The Abuja Federal High Court today struck out the suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited seeking to restrain the FCCPC from investigating its recent price increases for DStv and GOtv services, declaring it an abuse of court process.

The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, ruled that MultiChoice’s suit was duplicative and improper, given the existence of a similar matter involving the same parties pending before another court.

Consequently, the Court struck out the application in its entirety.

Recall that Multichoice had defied FCCPC’s invitation in February and proceeded to hike subscription rates barely eight months after similar increase. Instead, the cable service provider filed an application to restrain the Commission from asking questions as to the rationale behind its incessant price increase.

In his ruling, Justice Omotosho went further to affirm key provisions of the FCCPA 2018 regarding price regulation and the scope of the Commission’s mandate.

The FCCPC’s legal team was led by Prof. Joseph Abugu (SAN), while Mr. J. Onigbanjo (SAN) led the MultiChoice’s team.

The Court recognized that Section 88 of the FCCPA vests the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the authority to regulate the prices of goods and services when necessary. It also affirmed that the President may delegate this authority to any agency, particularly the FCCPC, for enforcement.

The Court further upheld that, under Section 17 of the FCCPA, the FCCPC is empowered to investigate exploitative pricing practices and to submit its findings, data, and recommendations to the President to inform decisions on price regulation.

Additionally, the Court confirmed that once the President declares specific goods or services as subject to price regulation, the FCCPC possesses full enforcement powers to implement such regulations.

In a swift reaction, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mr. Tunji Bello, described the ruling as an affirmation of the rule of law and a significant step towards curbing procedural tactics aimed at obstructing lawful regulatory oversight.

“It sends a clear message that regulatory agencies will not be hindered by procedural roadblocks when exercising their lawful mandate to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in the marketplace,” he stated.

According to him, “Nigerian consumers can be assured that the Commission is fully committed to investigating and addressing exploitative pricing and other anti-consumer practices, in line with the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.”

A Word of Caution to the Nigerian Public: Don’t Fall for the Traore Fake Hype

All over social media, anonymous accounts are busy hyping Burkina Faso’s military leader, Ibrahim Traore.

Bogus claims of how he has transformed his country are scattered across platforms, and many gullible Nigerians are buying into the hype without asking the real questions.

One such post, made by a Twitter (X) account describing itself as “African Hub,” claimed that the coup leader had improved the country’s transport system and introduced a new rail line. But a quick check revealed that the photo accompanying the post was actually of the Abuja Mass Transit Rail. Unsurprisingly, almost all the images used to support these claims of Traore’s so-called developmental strides are stolen from other countries—mostly Nigeria.

A more pressing question that believers in this propaganda never seem to ask is this: Why is no one from Burkina Faso talking about these supposed achievements? Why are there no videos or testimonies of actual Burkinabè citizens sharing their experiences?

I’ll give you two simple reasons why you won’t hear a Burkinabè praising Ibrahim Traore or his so-called accomplishments:

First, and most importantly, these “successes” simply do not exist.

Second, Traore has banned social media in his country. No citizen can use it to criticise or evaluate his government—only a cluster of anonymous, phony accounts are allowed to push narratives that promote military dictatorship, glorify state-sponsored repression, and sell a dangerous fantasy: that a country which rejects international cooperation, isolates itself, and dismantles democratic institutions can somehow prosper.

That is a lie.

Do not let anyone deceive you into believing that things are improving in Burkina Faso. These falsehoods are attempts to glamorise authoritarianism disguised as nationalism. Until you see the face of an actual Burkinabè proudly speaking about their country, do not fall for the illusion that Ibrahim Traore’s online sponsors are peddling.

There’s a new shortcut to instant popularity in naija: add Seyi Tinubu’s name onto any wild claim and boom, you’re headline gold – no need for facts, proof, or even a little hint of evidence.

And the biggest cheerleader of this incredibly banal fancy is none other than former Vice President and serial presidential bridesmaid, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar!

This elder statesman, whom you would think ought to have mastered discretion, either on account of the high office he once occupied or his travails from the William Jefferson scandal to the Intels affair and the detention and corruption trial of some of his allies and children, obviously has no chill, no filter.

Take the so-called “military parade, ” for example, during which Seyi inspected a group of youths in Boy Scouts-like uniforms in Abeokuta. Before you could say, Boy Scout, Atiku, screamed to the world that they were soldiers on a parade, for Seyi.

He thought and believed the worst, even at face value, when he just needed to look and he’d see those were only youth volunteers! Then there was the funny, if not ridiculous, Elizabeth Jack-Rich drama in which scandal-monger Jackson Ude, imitating the former vice president, alleged that Seyi was having an affair with the wife of former presidential aspirant, Tein, only for the family to dismiss it as rubbish.

But Jackson and others who aimed to trend on Seyi’s name had cashed out and gotten their trend. And now, there’s the pièce de résistance: Seyi allegedly masterminding the abduction of a student leader after a ₦100 million bribe was rejected.

Again, His Excellency, the former vice president, is leading the Twitterverse battalion to amplify what even the often critical socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has dismissed as “salacious, fallacious, and utterly fabricated.

At this rate, Seyi Tinubu’s name might as well come with a “trending is guaranteed” stamp. Forget truth or proof. Even forget investigating. Just put Seyi’s name into your story and you enjoy 24 hours of viral fame! Guaranteed.

AT IMF SPRING MEETINGS, WALE EDUN MAKES A STRONG CASE FOR NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC REFORMS

At the 2025 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington D.C., Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, led a high-powered delegation to advance the country’s reform agenda, deepen international partnerships, and reposition Nigeria within the global financial architecture. Among the Nigerian delegation also included the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yemi Cardoso, CEOs of major financial institutions, and representatives from civil society and the private sector.

The Spring Meetings convened finance ministers, central bank governors, and economic stakeholders from over 190 countries to discuss urgent global economic challenges, ranging from financial stability and debt sustainability to climate financing and inclusive development.

For Nigeria, the Meetings served as a strategic platform to showcase economic progress, attract investment, and align domestic policies with global financial trends.

Throughout the week-long engagements, Wale Edun played a central role in articulating Nigeria’s reform priorities and building confidence in its economic trajectory.

A major thrust of Edun’s participation was presenting Nigeria’s ambitious economic reform programme. He highlighted key achievements, including the removal of costly fuel subsidies, greater transparency in the foreign exchange market, and a halt to monetary financing of fiscal deficits—measures that have helped narrow the budget deficit, stabilize the exchange rate, and improve the country’s trade balance.

At the Nigeria Investment Forum held on the sidelines of the meetings, Mr Wale Edun underscored the country’s readiness for investment. He cited major infrastructure projects—such as the private-sector-driven tendering of 4,000 km of roads and the rollout of 90,000 km of fibre optic cable—as evidence of Nigeria’s commitment to economic modernization. He also emphasized the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s renewed mandate to increase production and cut operational costs.

According to Edun, these initiatives are designed not only to stimulate economic activity but also to generate jobs and empower Nigeria’s youth—especially in the tech and digital sectors.

In addition to plenary sessions, Edun held bilateral meetings with senior officials from the IMF, World Bank, and International Finance Corporation (IFC). These discussions centred on securing technical and financial support for Nigeria’s reform agenda, as well as deepening collaboration to unlock long-term growth.

These high-level engagements built on earlier momentum, particularly Edun’s 2024 meeting with U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, who praised Nigeria’s market-oriented reforms and efforts to curb illicit financial flows. In 2025, Edun continued to leverage these relationships to attract development financing and bolster Nigeria’s credibility.

Edun also participated in thematic roundtables on pressing global issues such as climate finance, energy transition, and debt restructuring. Representing Nigeria and other developing nations, he called for a more inclusive and responsive global financial system. He advocated for new financing models and reforms to international lending frameworks that better reflect the development needs of the Global South.

In his interventions, Wale Edun highlighted the IMF’s continuing support for Nigeria’s reforms. He noted that the Fund, alongside the World Bank, views Nigeria as a model for bold, corrective action in the face of economic challenges. The IMF’s most recent Article IV consultations, held earlier in April 2025, acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in macroeconomic stability and resilience.

Recall that the IMF had previously revised Nigeria’s GDP growth forecast upward to 3.34% in 2024, citing improvements in monetary and fiscal policy. Edun’s messaging in Washington reinforced this trajectory.

Edun reiterated that Nigeria’s reform efforts are ultimately geared towards achieving rapid, inclusive growth. He emphasized agriculture as a key area of focus for enhancing food security and creating jobs. Poverty reduction, youth employment, and human capital development, he said, remain central to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s long-term strategy.

Nigeria As Africa’s Big Brother: Why Tuggar’s Visit to Niger Signals a New Dawn

The official visit of Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to Niger Republic on April 16, 2025, is a highly symbolic moment in West-African diplomacy given recent turbulence in the sub-region. It is also a clear demonstration of Nigeria’s enduring role as a “big brother” on the continent. The visit marks a resumption of dialogue and recalibration of ties previously stifled between the two countries, this is despite being bound by deep history, culture, security, and economic cooperation.

Nigeria and Niger share more than just a 1,600-kilometre border; they are culturally intertwined through ethnic groups such as the Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri, and are linked through centuries of trade, religion, and family ties. Diplomatically and economically, their destinies have long been connected through shared infrastructure projects like the Trans-Saharan Highway and the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, joint security operations against terrorism along their common borders, and extensive trade relationships through cross-border markets.

However, relations soured in 2023 following the military coup in Niger that led to the country’s suspension from ECOWAS and strained its historical alliance with Nigeria. Diplomatic channels froze, economic cooperation stalled, and years of hard-earned goodwill appeared at risk.

It is against this backdrop that Ambassador Tuggar’s visit is very significant. Demonstrating skilled leadership and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s traditional diplomatic philosophy of non-interference balanced with regional stability, Tuggar has quietly but firmly steered efforts to restore Nigeria-Niger relations. His diplomacy emphasizes not punitive measures, but rebuilding mutual trust and acknowledging the shared aspirations for peace, security, and development.

During the visit, Nigeria and Niger agreed to reactivate key initiatives like the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC), strengthen cooperation on trade, energy, infrastructure, and security, and establish a Joint Consultative Forum to address emerging challenges. Both nations recommitted to advancing critical projects such as the Kano-Katsina-Jibiya-Maradi railway and cross-border energy links, highlighting the tangible economic ties that both countries continue to share.

Security, a major concern along their porous border, also featured prominently. The two countries pledged to intensify cooperation between their defense establishments to combat terrorism and insurgency.

Ambassador Tuggar’s leadership as Foreign Affairs Minister reflects a mature, confident Nigeria—a nation willing to rise above short-term political tensions in favour of long-term continental stability. His handling of the Nigeria-Niger crisis reinforces Nigeria’s historic role as a stabilizer in West Africa, a country that leads not by force, but by the strength of its values, diplomacy, and vision for a united and prosperous region.

The warm welcome extended to Tuggar by his Nigerien counterpart, and the acceptance of an invitation for a reciprocal visit, are a sign that the path to full normalization of relations between the two neighbours is underway.

Minister Edun emphasised that private capital is essential to accelerating development, following Nigeria’s return to macroeconomic stability with a projected 3.4% GDP growth in 2024, despite global shocks and reduced oil revenues.

“We have stabilised the economy. Now we must grow—faster, broader, and inclusively. Private-led infrastructure delivery is central to that mission,” Edun stated.

The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, MON, on Wednesday held a strategic meeting with a delegation from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), led by Major General Garrick M. NSA Ribadu Meets Benue Leaders, Reaffirms Federal Government’s Commitment to Ending Insecurity

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), paid a visit to the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, during which he also met with traditional rulers and representatives of various communities across the state.

The visit, undertaken on the directive of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was aimed at expressing the solidarity of the President and the Nigerian people with the government and people of Benue State following the recent spate of killings.

Delivering the President’s condolences, Mallam Ribadu assured the people of Benue that they are not alone in this difficult time. He emphasized that the Federal Government is fully committed to working collaboratively with the state to tackle and ultimately overcome the security challenges.

Describing the killings as a “tragedy” and “evil,” the NSA acknowledged the pain the people are going through, stressing that: “This is a trying moment for Benue State, but when evil comes, good people must unite to confront it.”

The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Niger have agreed to establish a Joint Consultative Forum as part of renewed efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen collaboration across key sectors.

This decision was announced in a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of an official working visit to Niamey by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (OON). He was hosted by his Nigerien counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigerians Abroad, in an atmosphere described as reflecting the “spirit of brotherhood that characterizes the warm and friendly relations that have always existed between the peoples of the two countries.”

The proposed Joint Consultative Forum will bring together relevant stakeholders from both nations to address shared challenges and harness opportunities for mutual benefit. Tuggar in Niamey: Nigeria, Niger Renew Diplomatic Ties, Reaffirm Joint Commitment to Regional Development

The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Niger have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation following a high-level diplomatic engagement in Niamey between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (OON), and his Nigerien counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigerians Abroad.

The visit, held on April 16, 2025, was undertaken at the joint initiative of both countries and culminated in a joint communiqué outlining key areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing peace, development, and economic integration across the region.

Tinubu is an asset to the North and Nigeria—Matawalle

Minister of state for defence, Bello Matawalle, has declared that President Bola Tinubu remains an asset to Northern Nigeria and the country at large.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by his special assistant on political affairs, Ibrahim Goga, the former Zamfara governor described such claims as “baseless and politically motivated.”

He said: “President Tinubu has demonstrated an uncommon commitment to addressing the challenges facing our region.

“Those attacking him with propaganda are only seeking relevance after failing to secure their political future.”

Matawalle accused unnamed members of the political elite of sponsoring misinformation to deflect attention from their own poor records in office.

His words: “These individuals had the opportunity to lead but left no meaningful legacy.

“Today, they parade themselves as defenders of the people, using falsehoods and crocodile tears to win sympathy.”

He praised the Tinubu administration for what he described as major strides in security and infrastructure development, citing Operation ‘Fansan Yamma’ as a turning point in the fight against terrorism in the North.

“Our security forces, backed by the President’s proactive strategies, have recorded remarkable successes. Over 65 notorious bandit leaders have been neutralised and 200 terrorist camps destroyed,” he said.

According to him, recent festive seasons such as Easter and Ramadan were among the most peaceful in years for many northern communities.

The minister also pointed to the revival of long-abandoned federal projects, including the Zaria-Gusau-Talata Mafara-Sokoto expressway and the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway, as proof of Tinubu’s commitment to regional development.

“These projects were abandoned for years, but President Tinubu has revived them. Critics deliberately ignore these achievements because they do not serve their narrative,” he said.

Matawalle called on northerners to reject what he described as “divisive rhetoric” and support the current administration in its pursuit of national unity and economic progress.

“We must be part of the solution, not the problem. The North stands to gain more through unity and support for a working leadership,” he said.

Economic Group Commends Wale Edun on Fitch Rating Upgrade

Nigeria’s upgrade by Fitch from negative, to stable is a mark of confidence by the global economic community on the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu far-reaching policy reforms, as well as his economic team.

This was contained in a statement by the Global Economic Policy Initiative (GEPIn), on Sunday and signed by its President Mr. Bernard Okri, where the group commended the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun for successfully implementing an overhaul of the country’s economy, which is already bringing results such as increased investments into the country.

Fitch Ratings is a global credit rating agency that assesses the creditworthiness of entities like governments, corporations, and financial instruments, assigning ratings to indicate default risk. Last week, the agency upgraded Nigeria’s outlook to Stable from Negative.

Nigeria’s stable outlook from Fitch Ratings implies that the country’s credit rating is unlikely to change in the near term, indicating consistent creditworthiness and low risk of default.

“Fitch Ratings assigned Nigeria a stable outlook due to the combination of macroeconomic stabilization and policy reforms that signal reduced near-term risks and improved economic resilience.

“Specifically, the reforms under President Tinubu’s administration—such as exchange rate liberalization, monetary policy tightening, fuel subsidy removal, and efforts to end deficit monetization—have fostered a more predictable economic environment.

“These measures have contributed to moderating inflation (projected to average 22% in 2025), a more stable naira, and a current account surplus (estimated at 6.6% of GDP in 2024, expected to average 3.3% in 2025-2026),” the statement read.

The group also stated that the increase in the country’s crude oil refining, particularly the Dangote refinery reduces Nigeria’s import reliance and further strengthening balance of payments.

“The increase in crude oil refining capacity, particularly through the Dangote refinery scaling to 0.65 mbpd by mid-2025, supports energy sector growth and reduces import reliance, further strengthening the balance of payments.

“The government’s focus on empowering the private sector aligns with Fitch’s view of enhanced policy credibility, which bolsters investor confidence and supports sustained economic growth, justifying the stable rating.”

In its statement, Fitch stated that it was seeing clear signs of increased commitment to market-based reforms under the President Tinubu’s administration. “While challenges remain, Nigeria’s trajectory has shifted toward stability and greater investor confidence,” Fitch stated.

Wale Edun Leads Call for Customs Reform to Unlock Regional Trade Potential

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has called for accelerated Custom reform across West and Central Africa to strengthen intra-African trade and enhance economic resilience. He made the remarks at the opening of the Fourth Conference of Development Partners of the World Customs Organization for West and Central Africa (WCO-WCA) in Abuja on Wednesday morning.

Mr. Edun noted that intra-regional trade accounts for just 12% of the region’s total trade, despite a combined population of 450 million and a GDP approaching $1 trillion. While the Nigerian Customs Service recorded a 90% year-on-year revenue increase and exceeded government targets by 20%, he highlighted the need to build on this momentum through deeper structural reforms.

The Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to modernisation, citing the forthcoming Single Window Project expected in early 2026, and urged broader adoption of World Customs Organization instruments such as the Authorised Economic Operators programme and the Advanced Ruling system.

He also emphasised the importance of donor coordination and long-term technical assistance to support sustainable reform. Many of the initiatives, he noted, are supported by concessional World Bank loans already reflected in the national budget and borrowing plan.

The two-day conference brings together customs leaders, donors, and trade experts to align on regional strategies for trade facilitation and economic integration.

How NSA Ribadu Helped Stabilise Nigeria’s Currency — Cardoso

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has been credited with playing a critical role in stabilising the country’s currency during a period of intense economic pressure.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, made this known during a high-level security engagement held in March, jointly organised by the CBN and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Mr. Cardoso explained that the NSA was instrumental in mobilising key government agencies to tackle the multifaceted threats undermining the Naira and the broader financial system.

“I really want to commend the commitment of the National Security Adviser,” Cardoso said.

“I want to say something that perhaps has not been said before, for various reasons. At a particularly challenging time—about a year ago—when the currency situation was becoming very difficult, we approached the NSA. There were several developments we did not fully understand at the time.

“He took it upon himself to convene a coalition of relevant agencies—the security forces, EFCC, Customs, and the CBN. I recall vividly that on a Sunday afternoon, under his leadership, we all met at his office for an extensive discussion.

“Mr. President was out of the country at the time. Upon his return the following day, we presented our findings to him. What followed from that engagement contributed significantly to the stability we are now witnessing. And I must stress that when I speak of stability, I mean genuine, sustained stability.”

Before the NSA’s intervention, Nigeria faced serious challenges to currency stability. These included volatile global oil prices, widespread crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism, reduced dollar inflows, hoarding, and rampant speculative trading in foreign exchange markets.

Mr. Cardoso further expressed his appreciation for the consistent support the CBN has received from the NSA’s office.

“The support we have received from the NSA’s office has been pivotal to our currency’s recovery. It has been truly invaluable, and we remain deeply grateful to Mallam Ribadu and his team for their unwavering cooperation,” he said.

Wale Edun: Nigeria is well-positioned to withstand global trade disruptions

Nigeria is well positioned to weather the economic ripple effects of the sweeping tariffs announced last week by the United States, including on imports from Africa’s largest economy, according to Wale Edun, Nigeria’s finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy.

In remarks delivered Monday at a corporate governance forum convened by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MoFI) in Abuja, Mr. Edun acknowledged that while the tariffs — announced on April 2 by President Donald J. Trump — exclude oil and mineral imports, they may still exert downward pressure on global commodity prices, including crude oil, Nigeria’s primary export.

Despite these headwinds, Mr. Edun argued that Nigeria remains “relatively insulated,” citing early structural reforms and a shift in strategy that has prioritized revenue diversification and private-sector participation.

“To mitigate the risk of revenue shortfalls, we are ramping up non-oil revenue mobilisation through the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Nigeria Customs Service,” he said. He also pointed to plans for budget realignment, targeted expenditure, and what he described as “innovative, non-debt financing strategies.”

Mr. Edun noted that Nigeria has maintained a trade surplus with the United States for three consecutive years, from 2022 through 2024. “The effect of the tariffs on our exports is negligible, so long as we maintain oil and mineral export volumes,” he said. Still, he warned of the indirect impact from a potential slump in global oil prices and said the government was intensifying efforts to raise crude oil output.

Nigeria’s Shift Toward Private Investment

Beyond short-term responses to trade disruptions, Mr. Edun framed the country’s broader economic strategy as one defined by structural transformation. “The government accounts for just 10 percent of GDP,” he said. “The private sector owns the remaining 90 percent, and our model is evolving accordingly — toward equity-based financing, asset optimisation, and private-led growth.”

He credited the Tinubu administration with stabilising macroeconomic fundamentals, noting that inflation was showing signs of easing, energy and food prices were beginning to moderate, and GDP grew at a steady 3.84 percent in the final quarter of 2024.

“These gains have been achieved through a disciplined mix of fiscal and monetary policies,” Mr. Edun said. “Even before this retreat from a rules-based global trading system, Nigeria had already begun pivoting away from debt dependence.”

He highlighted recent efforts to attract private capital into infrastructure, citing the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI) as a flagship example. “The Benin-Asaba Expressway is now under private management, cutting travel time from four hours to just one,” he said, adding that nearly 1,000 kilometers of roads have been earmarked for private-sector investment.

Governance, Privatisation, and Global Partnerships

Mr. Edun also underscored the government’s efforts to improve the governance of state-owned enterprises, describing corporate transparency and performance as essential to attracting investment. The proposed 2025 national budget, he confirmed, already includes a provision for privatisation, with potential for expansion depending on fiscal conditions.

“With a stable macroeconomic environment, a reform-oriented government, and a more attractive exchange rate regime, Nigeria is open for business,” he said. “We’re inviting global partners to invest, produce, and grow with us.”

Development partners, including the World Bank, continue to play a supportive role. But Mr. Edun was quick to emphasise the importance of domestic policy discipline, especially in building the institutional foundations for sustained investment.

Ndiame Diop, a former World Bank country director for Nigeria and now the regional vice president for Africa, also addressed the forum. He urged the government to accelerate reforms aimed at increasing transparency in state-owned enterprises, which he said is crucial for improving the federal revenue share and public trust.

“To realise the full benefits of ongoing reforms, strong corporate governance is essential,” Mr. Diop said. “This must be anchored in global best practices and consistent commitment.”

Armstrong Takang, managing director of MoFI, echoed this view, describing corporate governance as a cornerstone for long-term growth. The agency’s corporate governance scorecard, he said, is designed to align public enterprises with both local regulations and international benchmarks.

“We need these entities to operate efficiently, grow sustainably, and contribute meaningfully to national development,” Mr. Takang said.

NSA Visits Operation Safe Haven, Says FG Addressing Security Breach In Plateau Communities

The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has said the Federal Government is currently addressing the recent security breach in some communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The National Security Adviser made this known today 6 April 2025, at the Headquarters Operation of SAFE HAVEN during an operational visit to the State. The NSA disclosed that he was in Plateau following the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restore normalcy to communities recently attacked by miltias in the State. He commended security agencies for their timely response in curtailing the situation.

The NSA, charged Plateau residents to prioritise peace, and learn to live together as one. He appealed to the media to ensure due diligence and transparency while reporting sensitive incidents, especially as it concerns security.

Mallam Ribadu, assured the people that the Federal Government will ensure all arrested suspects in connection to the recent attacks are brought to justice. He, therefore affirmed that the improvement in the security setup will be sustained to deliver more operational successes in the country.

Wale Edun Unveils Stabilisation Progress, Economic Priorities

In a landmark virtual briefing, last week the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun presented a comprehensive update on Nigeria's economic trajectory to selected members of the media, highlighting significant progress, key priorities, and strategic initiatives to drive sustainable growth and development in the country.

The Minister's briefing provided a detailed overview of Nigeria's economic stabilisation efforts, which have yielded notable results over the past 18 to 20 months. According to Minister Edun, the economy has pulled back from the brink of a fiscal crisis, with Nigeria recording 3.84% GDP growth in Q4 2024—close to the 3.4% annual target—while inflation began to ease, revenues increased, and the exchange rate showed signs of strengthening.

Fiscal Discipline and Revenue Reform

Edun reported a 20% increase in government revenue last year, alongside a reduced budget deficit and a decline in debt servicing as a percentage of revenue. He reiterated the government’s commitment to responsible spending, stronger fiscal management, and efforts to raise the tax-to-GDP ratio to 18% over the next 18 months—through improved compliance, digitisation, and broadening of the tax base.

Private Sector as the Engine of Growth

The Minister emphasised that the next phase of economic growth will be driven by private sector investment. A ₦1 trillion low-interest mortgage fund—backed by both public and private financing—will soon be launched to stimulate the housing sector. Additionally, pension funds and institutional investors are being mobilised to finance 5,000 kilometres of roads under the Highways Management and Development Initiative.

Oil, Trade, and External Positioning

While reaffirming Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to diversify the economy, the Minister noted that oil revenue remains essential. Plans are underway to expand domestic refining capacity to 1.2 million barrels per day and ensure a secure, investor-friendly operating environment in the oil sector. He also encouraged exporters to focus on domestic and regional markets to cushion the impact of global shocks, including recent tariff policies introduced by the United States.

Youth Empowerment and Innovation

With an average national age of 16.9 years and over 600,000 graduates annually, the Minister underscored the urgency of youth-focused economic policy. He cited upcoming funding mechanisms to support young entrepreneurs and highlighted the recent launch of a national sports empowerment programme by President Tinubu in Ogun State.

Group Hails Tinubu, Matawalle, CDS Over Improved Security In North-West

The Northern Elders Political Development group has commended President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of State for Defense, Bello Matawalle and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa for their efforts in improving security in the North-West region.

It noted that majority of towns and villages in the region observed the Eid-el-Fitri peacefully without cases of bandits’ attack as previously experienced, aside from pockets of unrest in few Sokoto and Zamfara villages.

A statement signed by its secretary, Dr. Adamu Lawal Giwa, followed successful operation of Fansa Yamma, which led to the destruction of bandits’ enclaves in some areas in the North-West region.

“Improved security in the North-West has significantly reduced challenges related to travelling and trading, particularly along major routes like Sokoto to Gusau and to Kano.

“There is also a decrease in reported sightings of large groups of bandits attacking or kidnapping people.

“The military’s efforts have led to success in operations against banditry, especially in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina states.

“We applaud Minister of State Defence Mohammed Bello Matawalle’s effort of continuous support to the gallant troops, which boosted their morale to achieve the recorded success so far.

“We also acknowledge the unwavering support of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who has been coordinating the armed forces to ensure peace and tranquility in the North. We agreed that we are not there yet, but there are indications that we are on the right track towards that.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support and goodwill to the troops have also been praised by those who used to be threatened regularly by the criminal elements, as his administration’s measures have yielded positive results in reducing kidnapping and attacks by bandits in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states,” he said.

However, concerns have been raised over reported pockets of attacks in some villages of Sabon Birni and Isa, Sokoto State, as well as other areas of Katsina, Kebbi and Zamfara states.

Despite these challenges, the group commended the military’s sacrifice and efforts in ensuring the protection of people, which has brought success in their operations against banditry activities.

Group Commends Armed Forces, Matawalle Over Elimination of Notorious Bandit Leader, Dan Isihu

A civil society organisation, the Security Watch Network for Good Governance, has hailed the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, for the recent elimination of a notorious bandit leader, Kachallah Dan Isihu. The group described the development as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat criminality in the North-West region of the country.

In a statement signed by its President, Abdullahi Fagge, the group said Dan Isihu, who had long terrorised communities across Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna States, was neutralised in a carefully coordinated, intelligence-led military operation.

The group particularly commended Dr. Matawalle for what it described as his proactive leadership and commitment to national security. It referenced the Minister’s visit to the North-West region in late 2023, during which he charged troops to intensify the fight against banditry and other forms of criminality.

“Dr. Matawalle has consistently demonstrated exemplary leadership as Minister of State for Defence by boosting troop morale and ensuring the welfare of personnel on the frontlines,” the statement said.

“We commend the gallant troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces, whose professionalism and bravery led to the elimination of Dan Isihu—a notorious figure implicated in mass abductions, deadly ambushes, cattle rustling, and the control of key ransom routes across the region. His elimination marks a major victory in the broader effort to restore peace and security in the North-West.”

The group also recalled the Minister’s engagement with military leadership and frontline troops during his visit to the region, noting that the progress made since then—especially the neutralisation of six major terror kingpins and the disappearance of infamous bandit leader Bello Turji—underscores the impact of sustained strategic oversight.

“With the successful operation against Dan Isihu, the country has recorded yet another milestone in its security efforts. We urge the Minister not to relent but to continue rallying troops to eliminate remaining criminal hideouts and bring fugitives such as Bello Turji to justice,” the statement added.

The Security Watch Network for Good Governance further called for sustained military pressure and a comprehensive security strategy to ensure long-term stability and safety across the North-West.

It was Dele Giwa, the ace journalist/writer murdered through a parcel bomb in October 1986, who wrote that Nigerians are quite “unshokable”. He stated this against the backdrop of the perceived docility of the civil society in Nigeria in the face of bad governance and irresponsible leadership under the military in the 80s. How can a people be so educated and yet stomach open deceit? How can a country be so blessed and yet be wallowing in destitution.

Were he alive today, I wonder what Dele Giwa would say or write about the in-your-face insult being heaped on Nigerians and all the regulatory agencies presently by the cable TV “monopolist”, MultiChoice. It is a case of insufferable provocation.

Few weeks ago, MultiChoice, the operator of DSTV/GoTV in Nigeria, had announced reduction in the prices of their products and services in their home country, South Africa.

According to their management, the action was in solidarity with South Africans who were going through “hard times”. Its CEO, Byron Du Plessis, specifically attributed it to “financial pressures faced by households”.

But that was not the only “palliative”. MultiChoice added more goodies for South Africans in form of additional channels and enhanced streaming features.

Of course, everyone clapped for them as a sensitive and sensible corporate.

But elsewhere in Nigeria, the same MultiChoice chose to administer a starkly different medicine on its customers. Rather than reduction, it announced yet another hike in subscription fees without any add-ons, barely eight months after similarly hiking prices! As if Nigerians were a bunch of foolish oil sheiks who do not know what to do with free oil money. What an egregious insult!

Unlike the new channels added in South Africa where folks are now paying less, MultiChoice dubiously lumped channels that should be aired free of charge to Nigerians, into the “bouquets” it sells to hapless Nigerians at marked up rates! What a shame! Are Nigerians so docile that they cannot protest this in-your-face cheating by a greedy multinational in their own country?

Coming to think of it, Nigeria’s market is far bigger than South Africa’s. So, from even the angle of the economy of scale, the rates in Nigeria should be far cheaper than that of South Africa.

Well, the only sensible deduction one can make from this is that MultiChoice is now milking Nigerians to subsidise their compatriots in South Africa.

In all of this, I think I would blame our regulators who have over-indulged MultiChoice to carry on with this Apartheid policy in Nigeria for far too long. Of course, older generations of Nigerians couldn’t have forgotten the negative connotations of the word, “Apartheid”. It described the discriminatory policy employed by white minority rulers who oppressed and repressed the black majority in South Africa until 1994 when the first black man in the person of Dr Nelson Mandela emerged president. While apartheid lasted for decades in South Africa, there was a global coalition of all black nations and men and women of good conscience against that obnoxious policy. Interestingly, Nigeria as a nation had bankrolled the resistance struggle in South Africa through the 70s and the 80s generously.

Sadly and ironically, the same apartheid policy is what MultiChoice is now unleashing in Nigeria without any scruple. But this has got to stop! This impunity must stop!

The same contempt MultiChoice has for Nigerians is what they also exhibit towards our regulatory bodies. By their action, MultiChoice also gives the impression that our judiciary is on their dough. Only that can explain why MultiChoice brazenly ignored an order from FCCPC against increasing prices in February and, instead, rushed to the court in Abuja to procure an order restraining FCCPC from interfering in their pricing. Just like that! Again, what an insult!

Indeed, when MultiChoice first announced its plan in February barely eight months after a similar increment in 2024, FCCPC had summoned them to come and explain the rationale behind the latest decision, given that the market fundamentals suggest otherwise. One, the exchange rate had become stable, just as petrol price was coming down. In fact, latest reports by the nation’s statistics bureau indicated inflationary trend had come down consistently. So, what could be the justification for another increase?

I strongly believe that MultiChoice’s Shylock tendency and predatory antics stem mainly from its monopolistic stranglehold on the cable TV sector in Nigeria. It has wielded this unfair advantage unscrupulously over the years. By craftily securing exclusivity rights over popular sports (soccer) channels with the European brand owners, MultiChoice has succeeded in edging out Nigerian competitors in the industry. It was the strategy it had used to force a promising Nigerian challenger called HiTV into bankruptcy in the 2000s.

It is high time Nigerians come together to stop this nonsense by MultiChoice.

I therefore call on FCCPC to challenge the recent compromised court ruling against the interest of Nigerians to the highest court in the land.
I am wholly in support of the clarion call that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should take decisive steps to foster genuine competition in the pay-TV sector and dismantle MultiChoice’s monopoly on the market.

Nigeria’s Golden Deal That Few Are Talking About

In the early days of March 2024, the social media and news mediums were hit with news detailing how Nigeria’s security agencies had detained Tigran Gambaryan, Binance Holdings Limited’s head of financial crime compliance and Nadeem Anjarwalla, the company’s Africa regional manager.

Binance is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. It offers services such as spot trading, futures, staking, and lending. The platform supports numerous cryptocurrencies, allowing users to trade coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as many altcoins. Binance had been under watch by the Nigerian government for lending itself to suspicious transactions without trace.

From cryptocurrency, to foreign exchange transactions, transactions totaling over $21.6 billion passed through the Binance platform with no trace by the Nigerian government. The actors behind these transactions ranged from tech enthusiasts, kidnappers, businessmen, bandits, fraudsters, politicians and a long list of persons who were interested in having no traces of their transactions seen by others, let alone state officials. The question is why would anyone want to have their transactions hidden from the eyes of the government?

The Nigerian government wanted cooperation from Binance to gain visibility of users of its platform in the country, entailing who was using it and for what purposes. There was good cause for this. Banditry in Nigeria had been on an alarming rise. Kidnappers, too, were having a field day. They were able to launder proceeds of their crimes through the platform with no trace by the government.

It was for this reason that the government sought cooperation from Binance to help it trace the criminals that were using its platform.

And Binance is no stranger to investigations and requests for cooperation. As early as 2018, the US Department of Justice was investigating its platform for potential violations of US Anti-Money Laundering laws and sanctions compliance. Five years later, Binance and its CEO, Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to charges that included operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. They paid a historic $4.3 billion in penalties for this.

Among the atrocities the company committed included facilitating trade with criminal actors including ransomware gangs. In 2023 they also were indicted by the US Treasury Department for willfully neglecting Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements that allowed illicit actors to operate freely on their platform. The US Securities and Exchange Commission did not spare Binance, too. In 2021, Germany had given them a warning. And in the same year, the United Kingdom had a tight leash on the platform’s activities.

The Nigerian government’s insistence on transparency and accountability was not an isolated incident. Binance has a notoriety for non-compliance with governments, and Nigeria was going to have none of that.

With Mr. Gambaryan in custody, the Nigerian government insisted on Binance providing it with details and oversight of activities. Binance through proxies and multiple campaigns tried to get their executive freed, after Nadeem Anjarwalla had escaped from a safe house where he had been kept by security operatives. All tricks in the book were played. None worked.

In fact, according to a Premium Times Exclusive report, senior US officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Deputy Secretary Kurt Campbell, and FBI Director Christopher Wray, engaged their Nigerian counterparts, including Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, to press for the release of detained Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan.

US lawmakers also intensified efforts with a congressional letter to President Biden urging Mr Gambaryan’s case to be treated as a hostage situation; they then followed with visits to Nigeria and a resolution in Congress calling for his immediate release.

The U.S. did not stop there. The country’s National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan called his Nigerian counterpart, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu on September 30, 2024. Premium Times reported that sources indicated to the newspaper that the U.S. softened its stance following this engagement. Previously, U.S. officials and Binance lawyers had approached the matter with a condescending tone, expecting American laws to take precedence. It appears that Mal. Ribadu gave his counterpart a stern position. Three days later, U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. reached out to Ribadu’s office, signaling a willingness to resume talks and find a resolution.

Throughout the engagement, Nigeria firmly asserted its sovereignty in response to the US pressure to release Tigran Gambaryan, rejecting claims that he was being held as a hostage and emphasizing that he was facing trial for financial crimes. This firm stance ultimately forced the US to adopt a more conciliatory approach, leading to negotiations that resulted in the eventual dismissal of charges and the release of Tigran Gambaryan, and an agreement by both countries on a deal that places Nigeria at a better position today than it was before the Binance arrests.

In the agreement, Nigeria insisted that any release of Mr. Gambaryan must be portrayed solely as a diplomatic gesture to the United States, and that his handover would be only to U.S. officials rather than directly to Binance. Nigeria also demanded unfettered U.S. cooperation in its law enforcement actions against Binance and other cryptocurrency firms, including clear identification of the U.S. Department of Justice officials who would provide technical assistance on Nigeria’s Binance investigation.

According to the report, a significant part of that deal was where Nigeria called for swift action to return roughly $380 million in seized assets, detailing amounts from cases involving payments by former NSA Sambo Dasuki, property forfeitures linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke and Jide Aluko, assets associated with Sani Abacha frozen in France, and a recent seizure from a former governor’s family.

Nigeria also requested that the U.S. formally submit its release demand in a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu—also copied to the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Attorney General/Minister of Justice—while emphasizing that releasing Mr Gambaryan would not obstruct ongoing investigations and prosecutions against Binance and its officials.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills is reported to have communicated these terms to the US government, and within a few days the US had signed to them, leading to Mr. Gambaryan’s release on the 23rd of October, 2024. Remarkably, six days later, former US President, Joe Biden called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to thank him for his release. Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs shared highlights of the call as thus: “The two leaders exchanged pleasantries, and President Biden proceeded to thank President Tinubu for his partnership and for Nigeria’s partnership, in particular the collaboration between the two countries with regards to our law enforcement and law enforcement agencies as well as the release of one of the suspects of the cryptocurrency exchange company (Binance).”

That deal was a power move for Nigeria. It already has begun birthing results. Take for instance the US embassy in Nigeria announced the launch of the U.S.-Nigeria Bilateral Liaison Group on Illicit Finance and Cryptocurrencies; coincidentally this was announced on the same day that Mr. Gambaryan was released.

This partnership will see the US assist Nigeria to build its capacity to pursue cybercrime investigations and prosecutions. It is also expected that the two countries will cooperate in countering and responding to malicious cyber operations, cybercrime, and other digital harms.

This was not the only good that came out of the US deal with Nigeria. Funds totaling $6.02 million seized by American authorities nearly a decade ago, stemming from a botched arms deal was released to Nigeria by a Federal Court in Eastern California in late December as a result of the deal.

The money had been confiscated from an arms broker tasked with facilitating the sale of military equipment from the United States to Nigeria. The broker, lacking the requisite export licence, ran afoul of the US Arms Export Control Act. According to the US government, the intermediary’s unauthorised role in the sale, export, and delivery of military hardware to Nigeria triggered the seizure, freezing the funds in legal limbo. The US government had previously resisted Nigeria’s bid to recover the funds.

In another major gain from the deal, on January 10th, 2025, Nigeria secured the return of $52.88 million from the United States, a windfall tied to the kleptocratic excesses of former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke and businessman Kola Aluko. The agreement, inked by Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the US Ambassador, Richard Mills Jr., earmarks a portion, $50 million, for a rural electrification scheme, to be overseen by the World Bank, while the remaining $2.88 million will flow as a grant to the International Institute for Justice, that will fund a counter-terrorism initiative to train criminal-justice officials across East, West, and North Africa.

Driven by the National Security Adviser, with the collaboration of other senior government officials, very few Nigerians are talking about this deal. Fewer know about it. But it means a great deal to Nigeria, its relations with the US, and its ambitions to tackle challenges of economic sabotage and criminality. It will provide Nigeria the means to investigate Binance and those who have used its platforms to orchestrate crime in the country.

The collaboration that has come out of this deal further strengthens Nigeria’s institutional capacity to safeguard its economy from digital threats, ensuring that future financial crimes—whether involving cryptocurrency firms or other actors—are met with a coordinated and forceful response.

Beyond security, the deal yielded tangible financial benefits, unlocking long-contested funds that will directly support Nigeria’s development and security priorities. This agreement was more than a diplomatic resolution; it was a strategic victory that reinforced Nigeria’s position on the global stage, proving that with firm leadership, like that shown by Mal. Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser and a clear vision, the country can shape negotiations to serve its long-term security and economic interests.
