Uhm.. We musn't judge a book by its covers. I joined Nairaland about 5 years ago.. And I must say apart from the now boring "Joke Section" and the new "Celebrity Craze", it's living up to it's expectation. Content-wise, it's loaded and up-to-date.. As for the appearance, I bet there's a reason we're still referred to as a 'developing' country.

when the world most visited site (facebook.com) was launched far back in 2004, it wasn't as interesting as it is now. facebook always get more interesting and entertaining everyday and you find yourself spending more time on that site more than you had wanted to, simply because you find those that you love and you have the privilege of chatting with them live.
Nairaland i had known for years also and i must say this is our Nigerian version of facebook.
But i must say that ever since i get acquainted to Nairaland i had not seen much nor any improvement at all. The colour i must say is annoying and it doesn't make me want to spend more time in here, if not because of the blog i run, trying to get traffic to my blog (http://www.omobar..com) i wouldn't have been here.
Please and please don't get me wrong, Nairaland is very very ok, but what i am saying is that we the "programmers" we can make this forum better and one of the best in the world, by coming together collectively and make some reasonable changes so we can enjoy this forum better....
Facebook makes billions of dollars everyday from just advert alone, but when i went through nairaland's advert rate it was nothing to write home about, i wonder how this forum is even been manage with that little amount of money. Even the so called adverts, are not well placed for viewers to see. i can't remember if i have ever clicked on any advert on this forum.
Well, in a nutshell i would like each and every programmers to make reasonable contributions and to all those who can reach the owner of this great forum to please do, so we can make this forum more interesting for the interest of Nigerians and the world at large.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday sacked the Minister of Youth Development, Inuwa Abdulkadir from his cabinet.

Two British Nigerian woman have been detained in China for more than two months after their dream holiday turned to nightmare.

Modupe Idowu, 59, and her friend Esther Jubril Badmos, 48, were arrested after becoming embroiled in a dispute at a shoe shop in the city of Guangzhou.

They were locked up in 'hell-like' conditions at a detention centre for 38 days and although they have now been released, the two women remain trapped in the country as their visas have expired and authorities refuse to issue them new ones.



Mrs Idowu's desperate family said the two women's ordeal began Ms Badmos asked the shop to amend an order she had lodged earlier in the trip.

She was then assaulted by two members of staff before both women went to a police station.
Mrs Idowu, from Islington, North London witnessed a vicious attack on her friend.
Daughter Sarah Murray said: 'Although Esther tried to defend herself, she was pushed to the floor, kicked and beaten - and handfuls of her hair were ripped out.

'A security guard locked them in a room and another man, who we think is the shop owner's brother, came to the room and punched Esther.'

When they arrived at the police station their passports were seized and they were pressurised into signing paperwork they didn't understand, before being flung into a cell overnight without food and moved to a detention centre the next day.

Ms Idowu, who is known as Mary, was put in a cell with six other women - forced to sleep on a wooden plank and go to the toilet in front of the other prisoners.

Her friend was taken to the centre's hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
Meanwhile Mrs Idowu's five children have struggled to find out any information about their mother - despite paying lawyers in China around £4,000 to find out - and two of them flew to the country to track her down at the end of July.

Both women were released on July 29 but since then have been met with an onslaught of demands including a £20,000 claim for damages from the shop owner, which was eventually settled with £4,500.
But their visas have now expired and they cannot be issued with new ones until police provide paperwork to show the charges had been dropped.
Despite endless visits to the police station, officers refuse to tell them when, and if, the documentation will be provided.

Mrs Murray said she barely recognised her mum when she saw her come out of prison.
'When I saw her, I thought she looked like an old woman. She could not walk properly. She was so frail and so skinny as she had lost a couple of stone as she barely ate.'

Mrs Murray, who returned from China last week, added: 'I can't really put this experience into words. We are totally confused. It's like watching a horror film.'
Her sister, Julie Idowu, 26 said: 'Our pain is very real. I have been crying every day. I have taken a lot of time off work as I'm so worried about my mum.
'Her health and mental state is a big concern as well as the fact that she has missed her operation.
'It's an injustice that my mum has been held for all this time for witnessing an assault on her friend.

Her other sister, Elizabeth Idowu, criticised lawyers, saying: 'People are exploiting our despair. They are making money out of our continued suffering.'
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said they were aware of the situation and were providing assistance, but could not comment further and said it was a matter for the Chinese.

How did you come into the movie industry?
"I have been acting since I was eight in Ripples. That was how I got into acting. For movies, I think that should be in 1998 in Most Wanted. I met Torino (Emeka Ojukwu) in a bus and to my greatest surprise, he recognized me from Ripples. He asked me why I left the industry and later invited me to the audition for Most Wanted. What would you say is the worst story ever written about you in the press?
"So many bad things. But the one I hated most was the one about Fred Amata and I. It hurt me so much. I don't know where they got that story from."

Tell us about the first time you fell in love
"I think we met at a show. This was when I was in secondary school. (Her baby daddy). We shared a lot of things in common - singing. It was a case of two compatible people who were so much in love

So what eventually happened?
"Relationships sometimes come to an end."

What's your greatest wish?
"That God continues to bless me. Especially with the right man and a good family."

It's like you are eager to get married
"No. The thing is just that there comes a time in your life where everything is going fine and all you can say to yourself is after this, what next? After everything you have to get married as far as you're a woman.

Why have you not furthered your education?
"Life is not the same for everybody. Some people are lucky they come out of secondary school and go straight to university. Mine was different. But I'm determined. Definitely I'm going back to school. I wanted to make money. I love my money. I cherish my own money. So I will go back when I make enough. But even while I'm there I won't stop working."

What part of a man's body do you like most?
"A man's chest, from the belly up.

Where do you hope to be in the next ten years?
"In the next ten years, I know I will be married with kids. But I think it all depends on what God has fashioned out for me. I know I will still be in the entertainment industry or the fashion world."

Daniel Ihekina, the young boy who was arrested at the arrival terminal of Lagos’ Muritala Muhammed International Airport on Saturday thought he was going to the United States Of America.
According to investigators, the youngster made the desperate move in an effort to travel abroad.
While confessing to FAAN officials after his arrest, Daniel claims maltreatment he received from his parents forced him to attempt to leave them for good.
Daniel Ihekina said he was disappointed when he discovered he was still in Nigeria.
The alleged hero of many Nigerians has been handed over to SSS Officials for further investigation as his parents head to Lagos to pick him up.
Daniel Ihekina allegedly hid himself in the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik Air flight on Saturday. The flight took 35 minutes.

There was confusion today, Saturday at the Benin Airport after a teenage boy allegedly stowed away in the tyre hold of an Arik Aircraft from Benin to Lagos.

The Aircraft with registration number, 5N-MJG Flight 44, left Benin Airport at 9am for Lagos with top officials of the Edo state government on board.
And when it landed at the domestic wing of MMA, Lagos, the teenage boy, who apparently had sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well jumped out, shocking everybody.

Arik's spokesperson, Banji Ola said:

“The management of Arik Air has expressed shock over the incident wondering how the teenager beat the Aviation Security personnel at the Benin Airport to get to the runway.”
“The pilot of Arik Air flight W3 544, departing Benin Airport for Lagos at 9.00am today 24th August, 2013 reported to the control tower the presence of a strange boy in the bush about 200 – 300 meters at the end of runway 23.
The control tower told the Captain that they were sending security men to the place to arrest the boy."

Pope Francis’s predecessor breaks silence to contradict explanation he gave to cardinals when he stepped down
The former pope Benedict has claimed that his resignation in February was prompted by God, who told him to do it during a “mystical experience”.

Breaking his silence for the first time since he became the first pope to step down in 600 years, the 86-year-old reportedly said: “God told me to” when asked what had pushed him to retire to a secluded residence in the Vatican gardens.

Benedict denied he had been visited by an apparition or had heard God’s voice, but said he had undergone a “mystical experience” during which God had inspired in him an “absolute desire” to dedicate his life to prayer rather than push on as pope.

The German ex-pontiff’s comments, which are said to have been made a few weeks ago, were reported by the Catholic news agency Zenit, which did not name the person Benedict had spoken to.

A senior Vatican source said the report was reliable. “The report seems credible. It accurately explains the spiritual process that brought Benedict to resign,” he said.

Benedict said his mystical experience had lasted months, building his desire to create a direct and exclusive relationship with God. Now, after witnessing the “charisma” of his successor, Pope Francis, Benedict said he understood to a greater extent how his stepping aside was the “will of God”.

Benedict’s reported remarks contrast with the explanation he gave to cardinals when he announced his resignation on 11 February. “My strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” he said then.

At the time, a German journalist who had recently met Benedict reported he was going deaf, appeared to be blind in one eye, and was emaciated and “exhausted-looking”.

Speculation also grew that he was depressed after his trusted butler, Paolo Gabriele, was caught leaking his personal correspondence. Italian press reports have recently claimed he was frustrated by a network of influence built up at the Vatican by a pro-gay lobby of prelates.

Zenit reported that Benedict has stuck to his plan to live a life of secluded prayer, receiving very few visitors at his house in the Vatican’s gardens, which enjoys views across Rome to the Apennine mountains beyond.

“During these meetings, the ex-pontiff does not comment, does not reveal secrets, does not make statements that could be understood as ‘the words of the other pope’, but is as reserved as he has always been,” wrote Zenit.

After concerns were raised that Benedict would exert undue influence at the Vatican as his successor struggled to find his feet, Francis’s popular approach and his shakeup of Vatican protocols have relegated Benedict to the sidelines.

Francis has even joked about the situation, saying in July: “The last time there were two or three popes, they didn’t talk among themselves and they fought over who was the true pope!”

Having Benedict living in the Vatican, he added, “is like having a grandfather – a wise grandfather – living at home”.

Francis’s first encyclical, issued in July, was started by Benedict while he was in office and finished by his successor.

Benedict took his first day trip out of the Vatican on 18 August, walking in the gardens at the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome, where he stayed after his retirement while his new house was being refurbished. Benedict did not risk running into Francis, who has preferred to stay at his desk at the Vatican during the summer.

Barely two weeks after a police sergeant, Chris Omeleze, was dismissed after being caught on video demanding a bribe of N25,000, another footage showing a policewoman negotiating a bribe of N100 has surfaced on the Nigeria social media space.

The video footage, which circulated on Monday, showed the policewoman sitting in a commercial bus which she had apprehended in Lagos.

The driver and the conductor, at the yet-to-be identified location in Lagos, who had passengers in their bus, were seen making efforts to pacify the policewoman so that they could be allowed to continue with their journey; but their pleas went unheeded. Continue...

Soon, the driver got infuriated and slammed the policewoman, saying, “Don’t abuse me because of N100. How much is N100? Me I don pass N100.” The policewoman replied, “E no concern me. Pay me my own money.”


When the driver realised that she was hell-bent on collecting the bribe, he asked his bus conductor to give her the money. “Give her N100. I will return it to you later,” the driver said. As soon as the driver handed down the instruction, the policewoman alighted from the bus and walked towards the conductor.

Just as the two were moving towards the back of the bus, a voice from the background lamented:
“You pay for police, you pay for agbero.”

A shocking video featuring a child seemingly praying to the Commander-in-Chief is sparking outrage from conservatives, as well as more religious members of the public who see the boy’s actions as blasphemous.

“Barack Obama, thank you for doing everything and all the kind stuff,” the little boy, who identifies himself as Steven, says as he kneels down in typical praying fashion.
“You are good, Barack Obama. You are great and when you get older you will be able to do great things. Love, Steven,” the boy concludes.
Fox News Radio reporter Todd Starnes questioned, “What kind of a parent would allow their child to blaspheme God?”
“Let’s clear this up. The child is NOT praying to God. He IS praying to Obama,” a commenter in Starnes’ thread declares.
In the past, we have documented how Obama’s image in the mind of children has been elevated to a “messianic” cult-like status, promulgated through indoctrination facilities better known as public schools.
In 2009, for instance, Steve Watson detailed several disturbing stories wherein children attending public schools were made to “pledge allegiance every day at school to a huge projected image of the new president.”

Television evangelist and pastor John Hagee on Sunday told congregants — and a national and international audience watching live — that he no longer opposes a proposed ordinance that seeks to protect the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people in San Antonio.

He read a statement during his Cornerstone Church‘s two morning worship services Sunday, reflecting confidence in the latest version of the ordinance, which is expected to go before the City Council on Sept. 5. And he claimed credit for a key wording change that ended his opposition to the measure.

At issue was a clause that would have allowed the council to consider whether candidates for city boards and commissions had discriminated against gay and transgender people in “word or deed” — which opponents saw as an invitation to consider their socially conservative views on homosexuality.

The proposal’s author, Councilman Diego Bernal, removed that language July 25.

“All of the previous language that infringed upon the freedom of speech, the freedom of exercise of religion and the ability for people of faith to serve on City Council has been expunged,” Hagee told the Cornerstone audience, prompting a standing ovation at the first Sunday service.

Many of the other socially conservative local pastors and Christian business owners who raised objections to the original proposal remain opposed to the revised version.

The ordinance’s advocates contend it is an overdue update to protect a vulnerable class of people without negating the rights of others. It would add “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” to the city’s current anti-discrimination policy.

Hagee said he got the city attorney and Bernal to agree to the revisions in writing when they met Tuesday.

Though Bernal said he had made the revisions almost two weeks before that meeting, he said Sunday that the agreement and meeting with Hagee underscored the benefits of respectful dialogue.

“I was happy to share the changes with the pastor and his son,” Bernal said Sunday, referring to Mathew Hagee, the executive pastor at Cornerstone, who was also present.

“The ability to speak face to face about what the ordinance does and doesn’t do has proven to me time and time again to be the most effective method,” Bernal said.

Hagee said he had denounced the earlier draft through his church’s email network “weeks ago” and sent a letter to the council and mayor asking to discuss it. He spoke against it from the pulpit Aug. 4 and again on the nationally syndicated Glenn Beck talk show Aug. 5.

Hagee said he changed course the next day, after meeting with Bernal and reviewing the changes with his attorney and the Justice Foundation, a conservative legal defense firm.

Another lawyer working with a local network of pastors and business people to defeat the proposal said Sunday the revisions aren’t enough because the ordinance could still penalize firms and individuals for acting in accordance with their religion.

“No protection for people in how they speak and express their religious beliefs,” said Robert P. Wilson, an attorney for Alliance Defending Freedom. “On one hand, (the proposal) is promoting equality. On the other hand, it criminalizes religious convictions if a business does not operate according to the way the city says is” right.

Other megachurch leaders have responded in different ways to the draft ordinance.

Robert Emmitt, who heads the city’s largest congregation, Community Bible Church, contacted his council representative to object before the revisions were made but has not joined more vociferous opponents.

Oak Hills Church pastors didn’t campaign against it but its well-known staff minister, Max Lucado, met with Bernal last week and left with conclusions similar to Hagee’s.

The Archdiocese of San Antonio continues to study the wording and has not concluded its response, Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller said last week.

Bernal has met with a number of religious leaders, including Phil Sevila of the Texas Leadership Coalition, a Catholic lay organization.

While glad the “word or deed” phrasing is gone, Sevila said he will continue to oppose it.

“This type of ordinance is widely known around the country as resulting in reverse discrimination and so under no circumstances are we going to support it,” he said. “Will they look at Pastor Hagee‘s comments today? I don’t know. But this kind of incremental change does not make it acceptable.”
