I'm glad you brought this up, Seun. Nigeria is now synonymous with scams. There is no excuse however for internet scam.....it has the same result as going into someone's house to steal with a gun.
These guys can make honest money from the many benefits of the internet .....people make money honestly from all corners of the earth...........it's greed that drives nigerian youths to doing this bad thing.
We can do something about this by reporting scammers.

If it was your opinion.you would say something like "I like Wole Soyinka better" or "Buchi Emecheta appeals more to me than Achebe". The way you keep saying stuff like....."In my opinion, Soyinka is too much for Achebe. Even Buchi Emecheta writes better than Chinua Achebe." is not so good...........it defeats the purpose of your post.........
Telling people to read wider..........if I wasnt yoruba...what business would I have with "Ogboju ode........." not reading it doesnt make anyone ignorant........not reading Soyinka's translation still doesnt make you an ignorant person....
in response to
All:
I am not trying to win people to my side. Even though I prefer Soyinka's works to those of Achebe's, I still think Achebe is also great. There's nothing wrong to have preferences; most of you prefer Chinua's writings to Wole's, which may seem ludicrous to people like me. I just thought that Soyinka is the greatest of African writers because his writings challenge you if you're the type that love puzzles. In fact, I was first introduced to Things Fall Apart when I was in modern school; I didn't see any big deal in it. In my opinion, Soyinka is too much for Achebe. Even Buchi Emecheta writes better than Chinua Achebe. Read Buchi's Double Yoke and The Rape of Shavi, and you will bow to my girl! Please, guys, don't bite me for my opinion!

Yes, I'm Yoruba! But I am not at all beclouded by tribalism. I have only stated the fact of the matter. You know what, though, there was only one writer that could have kicked Soyinka's behind -- his name was D.O. FAGUNWA! Ha, ha! Never heard of him? Read wider!
What's agressive about that? huh

i think they are both good. they write diff genres so there is no yardstick for comparison. they are both great nigerian writers. infact since achebe's books are used in high schools in the US, more people know achebe than soyinka.
FYI, am yoruba
Oh my, do u mind rereading my post, ajisafe. I have read practically all of Soyinka's books and Achebe's books and what I simply said is they write differently and just mentiioned the fact that Achebe is well known in the US. And you contradict yourself by asking @Texazzpete not to insult Soyinka when you did insult Chinua Achebe by saying he writes for kids.
And please explain exactly how Wole Soyinka has added to the English language. A lot of his works are built on ancient Greek and sometimes Ogun mythology, well known english tales and what he did was adapt them to our society.very hard task.  No doubt he has mastery of the english language but i repeat both writers........write different genres.
Achebe was the first African writer to successfully transmute the conventions of the novel, a European art form, into African literature drawing sustanence from traditional oral literature.
Soyinka is a master in his field and achebe is a master in his field...........

omon, the french govt spsonsors movies from CFA countries iin an academic sense, these films are designed to have social impacts. Thats why cinemas in the US show movies from Mali, Senegal, etc cos they are well researched and make sense.
TV/MoviesRe: Americans Don't Watch Nigerian Movies? by omogenikky(f): 8:18pm On Nov 06, 2005
It's true, the average american doesnt give a damn about Nigerian movies. The people who watch Naija movies here are African immigrants  who are fascinated about the opulence potrayed in the movies. My hairdresser from Congo gives me a discount for Naija movies I can get her. Some of her customers cant speak english so cant understand Nigerian movies in english but still seat in front of the TV giggling endlessly at the antics of our "actors".
Even the  ones with  good graphics have ridiculous plots. Tthere are some that are good though but these are few. Indians don't cast 50 yr old women as new brides, they cast based on how fit the person is for a role. They don't have their characters scream eewo all the time nor do they have their characters overdo the bush man's part.
Truth is Nigerian film industry has a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng way to go. Right now, the only claim they have to a Nollywood is the huge sales and not the quality of the movies. If that's a good definition of Nollywood, then they are deceiving themselves.
CareerRe: Access/Marina/Capital Banks to Sack All Polytechnic & State University Graduates by omogenikky(f): 8:21pm On Nov 05, 2005
I like Seun's point. It doesnt make much point arguing against their policy because they will go ahead with it anyway. Let graduates start floating small businesses. I think its worthwhile. People should analyse markets and move in. We don't all have to stay in Lagos.

My cousin lost his job at a bank 2 years ago and he was so distraught. He thought the only other thing he could do was travel abroad. But then one of my uncles talked him into taking advantage of the agricultural incentives in Ogun State.
Apparently, you can get land at a reduced price if you are going to use it for agriculture eg oil palm. And now I think he has a snailery(?), grows oil palm (still to be harvested), and has a pigsty too.

Point is we youths have to develop this country ourselves. A country where there is no regulation against discrimination against polytechnic graduates. This isnt even about Access bank alone.they can try to achieve excellence by employing excellent graduates. I am talking about situations where there is a job offer in the paper and it is written plainly there - no polytechnic grad need apply.

I would think even in the US, an employer would prefer to have a Harvard grad but then a technical school grad would have his own niche too. The government should revisit the polytechnics and if they have no use, they should be merged with universities. What's the point of the govt running federal and state polytechnics when the grads are not being employed. Its not profitable, Western countries invest in their youths and institutions because of the return - brilliant professionals who move the country forward with their discoveries.

I have come to the conclusion that the way for youths to get out of the mires of unemployment in Nigeria is some sort of revolution unlike the violent french revolution but sort of like the British industrial revolution: A revolution of our intelligence and our enterprise.
CultureRe: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by omogenikky(f): 3:57am On Nov 04, 2005
allonym

Ok, lets clear up some bullshit

1) Male circumcision is not done for health reasons. There is minimal health benefits to circumcision and certainly no resistance to aids. Male circumcision is like getting a hair cut, only, the hair NEVER grows back. Male circumcision, removes some nerve tissue from the penis, but the effect is not noticeable by men and it does not affect hormone release at puberty.

2) female circumcision also has no heath benefit. If drastic enough, it will reduce hormone emission through puberty. As a result, women who have undergone this would have a much reduced sex drive. Sex drive refers to you're body's response or desire - not your mind. A man suffering from erectile disfunction can want to have all the sex in the world, however, his body will betray him with ZERO erection.

The studies linking HIV resistance with circumcision are badly conducted - or the results badly interpreted and anyone telling you that there is some great medical benefit to circumcision does not know what they are talking about.
Let's clear up some further bullshit here. The studies do not link "HIV resistance" to circumcision, they link male circumcision to a reduced transmission. There is a difference if u look and think closely enough. And I happen to know personally about some of the studies and they are as well conducted and analysed as any study can be. Maybe you should do a search on Ovid or Pubmed etc.
And if you had just paused long enough to read prev posts, you would have seen that nobody is advocating circumcision here. I was just reporting on studies that happen to have statistical significance.
One more thing here, what does "If drastic enough, it will reduce hormone emission through puberty." mean. Did u do biology in school? Cos that is so........
I suggest you try to read at least some of the prev posts before reposting
CultureRe: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by omogenikky(f): 12:28am On Nov 04, 2005
Male circumcision reduces the risk that men will contract HIV through intercourse with infected women by about 70 percent, according to a recent study that will be presented at the International AIDS Society conference in Brazil later this month.
Several studies seem to correlate this; most show sufficient evidence exists to recommend male circumcision as a strategy in preventing heterosexual men from acquiring HIV.
But this is not to be misinterpreted - according to a review by the South African Cochrane Centre, a unit of the SA Medical Research Council, “We need to be very careful that we don’t send a message saying that if you’re circumcised you won’t get HIV. Circumcised men do get HIV".
Yeah, circumcised men do get AIDS, but it would actually be irresponsible to promote it as a preventive strategy as you would find people going around having unprotected sex thinking they have immunity like our governors.........And because most of the studies have been done in Southern Africa which has a huge rate of HIV/AIDS and because the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa is fueled by multiple partners, policy makers are being cautious about telling people to go ahead with having unprotected sex if they are circumcized.
To me, this fact does not really have any significance cos HIV is about prevention and not about reduction...if u get what i mean.........i don't want people going around flipping a coin everytime they want to have unprotected sex. I would rather have them prevent it at all times.
CultureRe: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by omogenikky(f): 10:09pm On Nov 03, 2005
You are right, joshjosh, its actually been documented that male circumcision prevents AIDS. But apparently some people want to cap that........it sounds too semitic to them , maybe.
CultureRe: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by omogenikky(f): 6:27pm On Nov 03, 2005
Not all parents who circumcise their female kids deserve to go to jail. So many people go along with it in deference to tribal, religious and cultural norms and not because they hate their kids.
The key to stopping it is enlightenment. Making people know that there is a difference in circumcising males and females. Male circumcision is just cutting off the foreskin which anyway serves no purpose except to accumulate dirt!!! It's useless just like the appendix.  Its non invasive and is not mutilation like female circumcision.
But female circumcision involves cutting off an anatomically significant portion of the body and it has been known to cause vesicovaginal fistula (also common in cultures that encourage marriage and conception at a young age before full pelvic growth has been achieved- literally tearing the poor girl's vagina apart with a big penis). Most cultures do it because they believe it keeps a girl chaste and controls her urges for sex. While it does not control sexual urge which is mainly psychological (urge vs. stimulation), it certainly represses normal reactions to sexual stimulation. Reason why some people were able to sleep with their teachers in secondary school
Some moslems build upon references to female circumcision in the Sunnah (the words and actions of the Prophet Mohammed) but in actual fact, islamic scholars have said that there are passages in the Qur'an which by implication oppose female circumcision. See http://www.religioustolerance.org/fem_cirm.htm You can find more info about female circumcision at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_circumcision
But in this age and time, its a violation of women's human rights because they are usually too young or frightened to give consent. And there is not one logically reasonable ADVANTAGE whereas there are numerous DISADVANTAGES.
So, people must be told about these disadvantages, our community leaders and other stakeholders.  The way to stop it is by enlightening people.
