Disenchanted with the news that the Lagos State Government is borrowing money from the World Bank to repair roads, 26 political parties under the aegis of Coalition of Lagos State Opposition Parties (CLASOPP) are calling on Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to resign.

The coalition alleged that the decision was a sign that he had lost grip of what was required to govern a cosmopolitan state like Lagos.

A statement signed by Dr. Adegbola Dominic, leader of the coalition berated the spate of borrowing by the state government despite the huge resources available to it through the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and the Federation Account.
The statement read in part: “The Chief Executive of the Lagos Metropolitan Transport (LAMATA). Mr. Olufunso Olulade recently disclosed that LAMATA obtained another loan of 190,000,000,00dollars from the World Bank. The people of Lagos were not told how much was borrowed before now. The LAMATA boss did not also disclose to the people exactly how much debt LAMATA has incurred.

“While it is true that the Lagos roads are bad, why should Lagos resort to borrowing to repair roads? Borrowing huge sums of foreign money and squandering it to purchase BRT buses and repair roads is reckless and irresponsible. It will surely mortgage the future of generations yet unborn, “ the statement said.

Pointing at the fact that hospitals are not functioning while educational institutions are being shut down, COLASOPP said Governor Fashola has continued to administer the state as if nothing is going wrong. The group wondered what the governor had done with the huge revenue that accrue to the state on a monthly basis adding that he should at least be more sensitive to the plight of the poor masses.

“ In any case, can’t Fashola see that the problem of transportation in Lagos State is not the shortage of buses? This fact has been appreciated as far back as three decades ago when Alhaji Lateef Jakande as the governor of Lagos State began the process of establishing the Metro line,” the coalition said.
The coalition pointed out that the present traffic situation in Lagos is chaotic and the worst ever in the history of the state. It added that thirty years after Alhaji Jakande set out a clear standard on the solution to traffic problems, Fashola wants to buy more buses and he had to borrow more money from the World Bank.

The solution to Lagos problems today, the coalition of parties concluded, is for Fashola to resign as the governor of the State of Excellence.
Politics › My Roadmap To Uninterrupted Power Supply, By Atiku by omoharry(op): 5:38pm On Oct 22, 2010
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and presidential aspirant on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform has outlined a detailed roadmap with which he hopes to actualize his dream of ending the scourge of darkness and providing uninterrupted power supply if elected President.

In a statement made available to THISDAY yesterday, Atiku said in the interim, “government must close the gap in the transmission network thereby making it a proper grid system as opposed to a radial system.

This will make the system more reliable and less prone to national system collapses. Although distribution is receiving attention, it is, however, not certain that a clear policy on how to bridge the infrastructure gap at this level is being adequately addressed.”

According to him, “An administration led by me will undertake EPPs as a short-term measure to ensure enhanced supply within the first year of the new administration: We will provide EPPs for key urban areas (Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kaduna, Onitsha; Kano) but taking into account the need to provide investors with a reasonable return in the pricing decisions. We will ensure an accelerated procurement cycle to achieve timely delivery of the EPPs.”

Politics › Gaddafi Wants Eu Cash To Stop African Migrants by omoharry(op): 8:07am On Sep 01, 2010
Gaddafi wants EU cash to stop African migrants Despite historical tensions Col Gaddafi has forged friendlier relations with Italy Libyan leader Col

Muammar Gaddafi says the EU should pay Libya at least 5bn euros (£4bn; $6.3bn) a year to stop illegal African immigration and avoid a "black Europe".

Speaking on a visit to Italy, Col Gaddafi said Europe "could turn into Africa" as "there are millions of Africans who want to come in".

Italy has drawn criticism for handing over to Libya migrants it intercepts at sea, without screening them first.

Far fewer now reach Italy from Libya.

European Commission figures show that in 2009 the number of people caught trying to enter Italy illegally fell to 7,300, from 32,052 in 2008. The data was collected under the EU's Eurodac fingerprinting system.

Col Gaddafi has forged close ties with Italy since a friendship treaty was signed two years ago. It sought to draw a line under historic bitterness between Libya and Italy, its former colonial master.

"Tomorrow Europe might no longer be European, and even black, as there are millions who want to come in," said Col Gaddafi, quoted by the AFP news agency.

He was speaking at a ceremony in Rome late on Monday, standing next to Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

"We don't know what will happen, what will be the reaction of the white and Christian Europeans faced with this influx of starving and ignorant Africans," Col Gaddafi said.

"We don't know if Europe will remain an advanced and united continent or if it will be destroyed, as happened with the barbarian invasions."

Col Gaddafi has long seen himself as a champion of African interests on the international stage and has hosted many summits with African leaders.

Mr Berlusconi made no immediate comment on Col Gaddafi's demand.

Italy has been carrying out joint naval patrols with Libya for the past year, intercepting illegal migrants at sea.

The BBC's David Willey says Col Gaddafi's visit to Rome was overshadowed by another controversial speech he made - to two groups of several hundred young Italian women, hired at a fee of 70 or 80 euros each from a local modelling agency.

He told them that Islam should become the religion of Europe and gave them free copies of the Koran, after he had lectured them for an hour on the freedoms enjoyed by women in Libya.

Politics › People Ple Rate: All Hands Must Be On Desk To Restore The Intergrity Of Ibori: by omoharry(op): 10:46am On Jul 27, 2010
We are a non-political and non-partisan group of distinguished Urhobo indigenes resident in the United Kingdom.

It has been observed with total dismay the present turn of events in the recent allegations of financial impropriety levelled against Chief Ibori by leaders of the Delta State Elders Forum.

Firstly, the allegations have been highly politicized by different pressure groups and individuals, canvassing for their voices to be heard. We are definite this must have been highly influenced by certain disgruntled individuals and groups, who are immensely trying to use this recent allegations to open a new legal battle to destabilize Chief Ibori’s political career.

We appreciate the effort the United Kingdom is putting towards the fight of corruption in the African Continent and the world in General, but the ongoing trial of some family members and aides of our erstwhile leader in the United Kingdom leaves us to wonder as a minority tribe the very extreme measures and expenditure accruing from tax payers money that must have been spent to ensure Justice is done, even when most of the facts available to the Crown Prosecution are hear say evidence that cannot be fully substantiated, some of which may have been forwarded to them by agents of the Federal Government.

As a minority ethnic tribe in Nigeria, we call for serious reasoning when considering the fact that out of 35 Governors that were in office at the same time our Erstwhile Governor was in office, no mention can be heard of any of the others 35 Governors till date regarding issues of corruption, hence our cry of oppression as a minority ethnic tribe.

The fight against corruption should start from the Top not from the bottom, in as much as we reject the vice of corruption in Government and as a whole in general we must also ascertain as a group that this fight has been solely focused on a minority few which includes our Erstwhile Governor while a large majority openly enjoy freedom and their ill-gotten wealth both at home and abroad.

It is a well settled point of Law and Natural justice that everyone is innocent until proven guilty hence our present interest in this matter.

WE THEREFORE RESTATE AS FOLLOWS:

· We will no longer fold our arms and watch the reputation of our leader tarnished by certain individuals in Nigeria and the world in general.

· A call to all Urhobos worldwide to come out to support and solidify as a minority ethnic group for one of our own, stating our disgust for this unwarranted prosecution and our total dismay at the politicization of the recent allegations by certain individuals trying to gain cheap publicity or trying to settle political scores. A divided house can never stand, hence the unity call.

· To appeal to fellow Urhobos that are still bearing grudges against the erstwhile governor to bury the hatchet and work with him in his time of ordeals.

· This is not the time to list gains of his administration, but we should have it behind our minds that Chief Ibori is one of the proponents for Resource control which we are benefiting from at the moment by means of oil derivation allocation, a battle he selflessly fought and achieved.

· Every man is innocent until proven guilty, a warning call to Urhobos that are laid back while other group of ethnic leaders continue to cause more disunity amongst the Urhobo’s by instituting frivolous and unmerited actions and allegations of corruption in a bid to cause havoc and chaos in order to ensure the incarceration of our Son.

Finally, we are using this medium to recall the contributions of late Chief D.D. Mowoe towards ensuring Urhobo Unity and also to state as a minority ethnic tribe we should be united in the ordeals of our erstwhile Governor by addressing these issues as a tribe and coming out with viable recommendations to guide against any such re-occurrence of alleged corruption in Urhoboland rather than allow external and internal forces to plot the downfall of our Son while we fold our arms and look.

We congratulate the Urhobo Race in general and also to convey the message that as an Alliance formed for the progress of the Urhobo Race, we will not be deterred from speaking on opinions that will benefit the entire Urhobo Nation and its people.

LONG LIVE URHOBOS! LONG LIVE DELTANS!! LONG LIVE NIGERIA!!!

SIGNED: Chief Ejiro Nomuoja LLM Efe Abeke Solomon Amurun

Convener Publicity Secretary Vice- President
