Politics › Justice Denied For 24 Years by omoharry(op): 11:01am On Aug 15, 2012

After serving over two decades behind bars, a court sets Olatunji Olaide free

The news report that the Court of Appeal has found one Mr. Olatunji Olaide innocent, after he had spent 24 years in prison, is embarrassing for our criminal justice system; and the experience agonising for the victim. Even more excruciating for Mr. Olaide is that 17 of those difficult years were spent on the death row waiting for the hangman, before the Court of Appeal freed him. Mr. Olaide’s experience in a normal clime would have led to a national outrage and a major public enquiry to find out how a nation’s judicial process can be so unfair to a citizen.

But in Nigeria, Mr. Olaide’s experience is common, as many Nigerians in prison across the country have spent years in custody, on what is commonly referred to as ‘awaiting trial’. This unfortunate experience is despite the existence of chief law officers at the federal and state levels. Indeed, but for the intervention of one Pastor Ariyo Popoola, and the counsel he retained for the condemned prisoner, Mr. Chino Obiagwu, the Executive Director of Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), Mr. Olaide would have been hanged for an offence the appeal court has now found him innocent of.

The heart-rending story of torture by the police, and other inhuman treatments deserve investigation by the nation’s human rights commission. There is also the need to improve capacity to investigate and punish crimes.

It is unfortunate that while discharging and acquitting Mr. Olaide, the Court of Appeal was not in a position to grant him any financial restitution. This scandalous exposure of our criminal justice system, would most likely also receive scant change in future, unless there is a legislative interference providing for financial restitution in similar cases. Also, the Lagos State ombudsman should intervene to get an administrative relief, and if it fails, judicial intervention for Mr. Olaide to receive compensation.

According to Mr. Olaide, he left Lagos in 1988 for Gwari to buy cows, goats and rams to sell, and while in the bush making his choice, he was arrested by some policemen who claimed that he and others they were chasing had abandoned a stolen vehicle on the road, and had ran into the bush. He narrated that after a series of interrogations in Niger State, and despite his claim of innocence and confirmation by the interpreter who was with him when he was arrested, that he was a visiting trader, he was handed over to an anti-terrorism squad from Lagos and transferred to Adeniji Adele Police Station, where, according to him, the real hell began.

After a trial at a Lagos High Court, Justice Da Sliva sentenced him to death, and for 17 years, he was a call away from death. Within that period, his other eight inmates, who shared the same tiny cell with him, were one after the other called out on their individual faithful day and, according to him, they never returned. While in prison, his wife remarried, and interestingly, he bears her no grudge; stating that were his wife a sister, he would have acquiesced to her new marriage, as there was little hope of his ever getting out a free man. Indeed, despite his family’s best effort to free him, no respite came, as the lawyers hired for the purpose merely collected fees and failed to make any headway.

We salute the churches that lightened his ordeal, particularly the Catholic Church, and of course his ultimate benefactor, Pastor Poopola, as well as his counsel, Obiagwu, who collected no money for the services. We commend such magnanimity to other lawyers, particularly those who place money above other considerations.

Olaide scored the police very low, claiming torture and the stealing of the N325,000.00 he had on him when he was arrested in 1988. He also condemned the judicial system, believing that it is ineffective and that he was unjustly condemned for a crime he did not commit. Anybody would. We hope, as he does, that he will now enjoy the rest of his life in freedom.

Nigeria men also have this issues with materialism. I met a guy online and everthing was perfect on the fone.We were friends for a month. The day he came to my office and realize i m not the million dolla babe as he expected, that was the end of the friendship . Nigerian men actually go for this pourch babes and end up complaining of how greedy and fake they are.I think people attract like minds. So if u are a man that settle for morals and values, there is no way you would end up with fake and extravant ladies.

Politics › Ministers Brief Jonathan On Performance ; I Think Whis Is How Things Are Suppose by omoharry(op): 9:19am On Jul 25, 2012
.

WITHOUT formally announcing it, President Goodluck Jonathan may have started getting briefs from Ministers on the performance of their Ministries as related to the implementation of the 2012 budget.

Last Thursday, Ministers of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade and Interior, Mr. Abba Moro briefed the President. Yesterday (Tuesday), Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina briefed the President on the performance of their Ministries.

Unlike Olubolade and Moro, Presidential Adviser (Media and Publicity), Dr Rueben Abati brought Adesina to brief the State House press corps as according to Abati, they are “the ears and eyes of your media houses and by extension the public. About a week ago, I pointed out that in the past one month, the President directed the Minister of Finance to present an outline of disbursement to MDAs in relation to Budget 2012 and that was duly done. At that EFC, the President directed that each ministry should present its key performance indicators. Each ministry has been coming with parastals and been briefing the President in terms of mandate, what has been received and their projection for Budget 2013. Budget performance is something the President takes very seriously. It is not an event, it is a process. The Ministers of Interior and Police Affairs have appeared before the President. Today, it was the turn of the Minister of Agriculture. I feel it is important for the minister to intimate you of what he and his team told the President. That is the essence of this briefing. During the inauguration of cabinet, the President laid emphasis on performance. You, journalists, are the eyes and the ears of the media and by extension, Nigerians.”

Adesina, who announced that the Ministry ofAgriculture haS recorded 68 per cent budget utilisation since this budget year said President Jonathan, after his briefing, was satsfied with the progress the ministry is making the provision of food security and reduction of food importation as well creating sustainable jobs.

The Minister said: I must remind you that the budget was passed on the 15th of March, 2012. Agricultural season started in January and 48.1Billion was budgeted for capital projects with 13.8 released. So far, we have spent 9.4 billion of the amount released. We have achieved 68 percent utilization at least for the main Ministry while some of our parastatals have achieved as much as 100 percent of the amount released to them from March when the budget was passed. Most of the commitments are in getting fertilizers to farmers.”

The Ministry, he stated, is working towards adding 20 million metric tonnes to the domestic supply of food by 2015 and would be self-sufficient in rice production by 2015. This, he said, is the reason for raising the tariff on rice importation by 100 per cent.
Adesina noted that through the efforts of his Ministry, “153 SMEs are now back in operation as a result of the federal government policy. There are six billion dollars investment in ethanol. One of the largest tractors assembly plant is already producing tractors for local market and for West African country. Dominion farm is investing 40Million US. Dollars to produce 300,000 tons of rice, 50 youth trained in rice farming outside the country. 13 new rice mills, with200,000 metric tons capacity, Ebony rice mill is adding 30,000 tones. We have concluded arrangement of 100 integrated rice mills to mill 2.1 Million metric tons of rice. Total amount of investment is $1.5 billion dollars to unlock the potential in the sector for Nigeria. We signed an MoU with 15,000 hectares in the north cotton seeds given out for free. All seeds are being given out for free. Katsina, kano, Jigawa etc. The action is getting global attention. We are getting huge amount of supports. Bill Gates agrees to seat on the eminent persons group. Have 36 and 6 regional Directors. World Bank to invest 900Million Dollars in Agric. IFAD to raise 80Millon. Dollars. Bill and Melinda have agreed to establish an office making Nigeria a priority for the foundation.

“For about forty years now, government bought and distributed fertilizers and that was one of the most corrupt systems in the country. Farmers never got the fertilizers, but the political farmers got it, and it was even exported to other countries. We have been able to sanitize that and we ended it within 90 days of this administration. The current situation is for the private sector to sell seed and fertilizers to farmers. That is the way it should be. Within the first 4 months, we were able to develop a robust data base for farmer so that we can capture our supplies to them. We did this and 4.5 Million farmers were captured with their biometric information so that we can target supply of inputs to them better. Governent target is to capture 5 Million farmers every year to reach 20 Million farmers by 2015. We developed an electronic Wallet system. It took us three months to develop. We have been able to leverage support for finance for seed and fertilizer with a commitment of N30Billion from Banks to lend to the sector.”

Health › Blood Donation & Organ Donation by omoharry(op): 1:37pm On Jul 06, 2012
I came across a write up that Nigerians do not have the habit of donating blood voluntarily except for commecial purpose or only when friends or familiy memebers are involve.

Now my question is this: Can you voluntarily donate blood to hospitals to save peoples life without payment or you would rather donate and be paid for it?

Can you authorize your organs to be donated if death occurs(God forbid anyway) to be given to pple that really need it.such as eye, kidney, heart etc.
My take on this is that, after all this organs are usuless when death occures, why dnt u give it out to pple that are in need of it to survive.

Please i just want to know what pple really think toward voluntary donation to help lives.Kindly contribute maturedly.
