Politics / 90% Nigerians Still Depend On Hoes, Cutlasses To Survive – Shettima by Omooba77: 8:51am On Dec 11, 2023
Vice President Kashim Shettima has decried the lack of adequate investment in agriculture and technology, saying the situation has negatively affected efforts to end insecurity and reduce poverty.

Shettima stated this in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, while delivering the 13th convocation lecture of Al-Hikmah University, Ilọrin, weekend.

The vice president said it was unfortunate that 90 per cent of Nigerians still depend on cutlasses and hoes to earn a living.

He said, “100 years ago, our forefathers were eking out a meager existence using cutlasses and hoes. Even now, 90 per cent of Nigerians are living a subsistence existence using hoes and cutlasses. This calls for investment in modern technology.

“I have a picture of a town in central Borno that was taken in 1900 and when you juxtaposed it with the one taken in 2020, there won’t be any remarkable difference.”

Shettima reiterated the need to leverage the growing influence of technology to develop our agricultural sector to actualise food security.

Nigeria, he said, can overcome insecurity once we grow our economy to radically reduce poverty levels, adding that, “Only an agricultural revolution can guarantee this.”

He said going by the amount of arable land, water resources, and size of our humanity, Nigeria has no reason not to be among the ten richest countries in the world.

The vice president thanked the management of the school for naming the newly-constructed Faculty of Nursing Complex which he commissioned after him.

Politics / Northern Lawyers To Sue FG Over Kaduna Killings by Omooba77: 4:11pm On Dec 09, 2023
The Concerned Northern Forum formed by lawyers has vowed to institute legal action against the Federal Government, demanding the payment of adequate compensation for the victims of Tudun Biri bombed by the military airstrikes in Kaduna State.

Speaking on behalf of the lawyers forum, Barrister Nafi’u Abubakar, explained that the forum would ensure that the families that suffered irreparable loss as a result of this unfortunate incident get justice.

Nafi’u who spoke while addressing newsmen in Kaduna on Saturday urged the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to ensure a thorough and independent investigation into this incident.

It is imperative that those responsible are held accountable for their actions, and measures are put in place to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future.

“We also urge the Nigerian Army to reevaluate its rules of engagement and training procedures to prevent the loss of innocent lives during military operations. It is vital that the Nigerian Army, as a defender of the nation, exercises utmost caution to avoid any further instances of collateral damage and civilian casualties,” he said.

The forum with over 600 members extended their deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during the tragic incident.

We stand united with them in their grief and pledge our unwavering support in ensuring justice is served. The Concerned Northern Lawyers Forum will work tirelessly to pursue legal means to claim the compensation that is owed to the victims,” he said.

Politics / Gunmen Kill 33 In Taraba Villages by Omooba77: 10:18am On Dec 06, 2023
At least 33 persons, including herders and farmers, have been reportedly killed in attacks on three villages in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Daily Trust gathered that 21 persons were killed in Garbatau village, 10 in Ganfeto, and two in Hawan mata, all in the same local government.

It was not immediately clear the reasons for the attacks, which residents said happened on Sunday.

The attacks, it was learnt, forced hundreds of residents, including herders, to flee with their cattle to neighbouring Adamawa State.

Foreign Affairs / German Vice Chancellor Cancels COP28 Visit Over Budget Crisis by Omooba77: 11:57am On Dec 04, 2023
German Vice Chancellor, Robert Habeck, on Monday cancelled a trip to the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai due to the budget crisis at home.

The move follows a landmark court decision earlier this month that blew a huge hole in the government’s spending plans.

Habeck’s presence in Berlin is necessary in order to make further progress in the talks on the 2024 budget, a spokeswoman for the Economy Ministry announced.

The cancellation was done in consultation with and at the request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, she added.

Habeck, who is also economy and climate minister, was due to participate in the COP28 climate conference in Dubai on Tuesday.

A recent decision by Germany’s Constitutional Court struck down plans to reallocate 60 billion Euros (65 billion dollars) borrowed during the Coronavirus pandemic for climate projects instead.

The fallout from the decision, which almost certainly impacts other special funds as well, has created a major budget crisis for Scholz’s three-party coalition government.

Negotiations on the budget is currently taking place primarily in a three-way round with Scholz, Habeck and Finance Minister Christian Lindner.

Nigeria, 117 countries support clean energy adoption
The coalition must reach an agreement within the next few days if it wants to adopt the budget for 2024 before the end of the year.

A political agreement in principle must be reached by the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday so that there is still enough time for the parliamentary process.

Habeck, had earlier told Germany’s ARD television station on Sunday evening that he sees progress in the negotiations.

“I am very optimistic that we are well on the way to reaching an agreement,’’ he said.

When asked if this meant that he wasn’t sure that the coalition would reach an agreement, Habeck said, “I can’t speak for everyone. But I repeat that I believe we are making good progress.’’

“It is a process that is arduous, one can see that, but it is making progress,’’ Habeck added.

Politics / Nigerians Who Can’t Explain Their Sources Of Wealth Would Be Arrested, Charged by Omooba77: 10:09am On Dec 04, 2023
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, stated this, adding that the police are allowed to arrest individuals who could not justify their sources of income and to charge them to court.

The Delta State Police Command has said that Nigerians with suspicious sources of wealth, who cannot lay claim to any justifiable means of income, can be investigated and charged to court.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, stated this, adding that the police are allowed to arrest individuals who could not justify their sources of income and to charge them to court.

Edafe in a post on his X handle on Sunday said it was a sad trend that people felt it was wrong to question what he called the “suspicious wealth” of Nigerians.

The police spokesman said the country now had cases of kidnapping, ritual killings and internet fraud.
He maintained that the police force had told its operatives to do the right thing and avoid seeing justifiable sources of income as a means to extort Nigerians.

He said, “It is a very sad trend that people feel it’s wrong to question the suspicious wealth of persons who cannot lay claim to any justifiable means of income. We have cases of ritual killings, Kidnapping, and even internet fraud. We tell our men to do the right thing and not take it as an avenue to extort.

“However, any person arrested and can’t justify his source of income should be properly investigated and charged to court when the cockroach in his cupboard has been unveiled. Like me, hate me, I don’t mind, it’s the simple truth.”

Top energy company, Equinor, exits Nigeria after 30 years.

It’s another one.
Norwegian energy company Equinor, exits Nigeria after 30 years. Sells off all their Nigerian businesses, including its share in the Agbami oil field operated by Chevron.

The transaction marks the end of Equinor’s three-decade presence in Nigeria.

Equinor has been a significant player in the development of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, particularly in the Agbami field, which has produced over 1 billion barrels of oil since its inception in 2008.
