TV/Movies / Re: Most Beautiful Movies You've Watched? by omoolomo2: 5:59pm On Apr 13, 2008
With all the crappy Naija movies you Nigerians watch, it's good to see they didn't make u guys' lists.

For me,

Everything is Illuminated
The Prestige/The Illusionist (similar movie)
A Beautiful mind (reminds me of me)
Saw series
Saworoide/Oleku (One of the two, can't remember which is which)
Finding Forrester
All Jackie Chan movies

I try not to watch the same movie twice except for Jackie Chan movies.
Music/Radio / Re: Rock Music Is Satanic? by omoolomo2: 5:44pm On Apr 13, 2008
Punk Rock and Metal and which ever type of rock you guys you guys call demonic isn't anything like that. I actually have a friend who used to be in a punk rock band. He was the "yeller" for the band, from what he said, it's all just fun.

It's goes back to the whole concept of not trusting what we don't understand, and that's just part of what makes us human.

For those of you that think rock is satanic, try this experiment. I picked one of those satanic bands, System of a down, that always have lyrics that make sense, and I ordered a few of their songs from the least "satanic" to the most "satanic"

Listen to these songs in succession and try to follow the lyrics:

Lonely day:

Radio/Video:

Question:

Aerials:

B.Y.OB.:

Chop Suey:

Violent Pornography:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YQ7_XhbeOA
Sugar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOA8QT-sk4M

hopefully some of you'll like the songs. I didn't like this type of music before always, but after I heard a lil boy singing along to Radio/Video in a car, so I had to like the song and the group.

By the way, I don't believe in God, so words like satanic and demonic don't have any concrete meaning in my dictionary.
Religion / Re: Scared! I Don't Believe In God, And You People Scare Me by omoolomo2: 6:46am On Feb 29, 2008
In case anyone would like to know why I don't believe in God. Here's something I wrote a while ago. I'll try and look for the other things I wrote. I struggled with this issue for a while, I can find more if anybody is interested.

Here's my 12 keys to a successful religion (what I noticed religions tried to do to people):
1.Make the people feel bad or inadequate for something they can't change about themselves. Denounce being human as something filthy, disgusting, bad, incomplete,
2.Offer a way to atone for the inadequacy
3.Scare the people. Make a huge punishment (claim hopelessness)for not following your religion.
4.Attribute every good event/occurrence to some good variable (God) and bad occurrences to some (intrinsically) bad variable (sin/devil). Encourage people to do this daily.
5.Discourage questioning. Have negative consequences for questioning the religion.
6.Give “feel good” explanations for death. Give explanations for other issues people can't explain like famine, ,
7.Create rituals that appeal to emotions.
8.People love and connect with martyrs (Find emotional people that would die for your message or make up stories of some).
9.Create a superhuman hero. People love heroes especially underdogs that do great things. Have a good theme song too
10.Create stories around your hero. If you choose a real life hero, make sure the story doesn't get published until years after the hero is dead and information in the story cannot be verified.
11.Use your religion to help people think. Thinking is stressful and that's one of the main tasks of religion: helping people think. Once your religion makes people feel good, they'll allow it to think for them (see Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle). Include some basic universal laws of nature in your stories.
12.Create pictures of a bright future. Hope is the key to religion. Religion is all about selling dreams of a bright future and tweaking people's emotions.

This was a while back, I write something cohesive when i get time.
Religion / Re: Scared! I Don't Believe In God, And You People Scare Me by omoolomo2: 6:39am On Feb 17, 2008
I'm scared of people not God. I don't want to lose my religion because of some superstition I no longer subscribe to.

What is Christianity in the first place?
[li] Attributing every good thing that happens to you to God's love (We serve a living God, )[/li]
[li] Attributing bad things to the devil or as God's will (All things work together for good to, )[/li]
[li] Worshiping Jesus because he said he died for you. MLK died for a good cause, people take bullets for other people. There are so many martyrs, but that doesn't warrant worship.[/li]
[li] God only loved the Israelites for generations and all of a sudden, you worship his son and you'll get some love too. [/li]
[li] Sermons are basically finding ways to relate a book written long ago to present day events [/li]
I really don't want to get started on my many reasons for not believing in God anymore.

But no matter how convinced I am that the religious God does not exist, I still live in a society where most people want their lives to be directed fully by God. Their religion tells them that if they love me, they should do all they can to "bring me into the light."

So am I scared of God? - No. What I am scared of is breaking family ties and friendship bonds that took years to build.

I don't know how to explain to you guys that I had that REAL relationship with Christ. It was really genuine. I still get shivers sometimes when I hear some of the good old worship songs: they remind me of the good old times. I still remember arguing in support of God's existence, I fervently believed that Christianity is a way of life and not a religion.
It just happened that my personal experiences and my personality has made me come to the realization (or false realization) that the god portrayed by religions does not exist.

I still cherish the good times I had with my religious beliefs and appreciate every moment of my religious past, but now it's time to move on.
The problem is that I'm afraid religion would eventually create a barrier between me and my family.
Sometimes, I wish I could change my experiences, and sometimes I think maybe I'll be an example for other people that choose to shake the status quo.
Religion / Re: Should I Force My Daughter To Go To Church? by omoolomo2: 4:14am On Feb 11, 2008
I myself am an atheist. I grew up in Nigeria, went to church, did the whole thing. Now in my twenties, I don't belief in the bible. I keep my beliefs to myself and go to church just to fit in with being Nigerian, and from what I'm reading now, that is the right decision.
You need to make your daughter realize that she's still your daughter and you still love her. If she feels seperated from you because of her beliefs, she'll find her family somewhere else.

If you want her to a Christian, you should send her to Nigeria. In Nigeria, everyone goes to church, her friends would go to church, she'll make new friends her age in church, going to church is cool. The Nigerian environment also helps believing in God. When all the odds are against you and it takes a miracle to pass an exam or get into the college of your choice, you're more likely to look for something to believe in.

Personally, I know it's hard to let her be. If she were older, I bet she'll be considerate and keep her beliefs from you to keep you from all this trouble. Sound very supportive, and let her know you'll love her whatever she chooses to belief in. If she feels like she's being punished in anyway for her beliefs, then she'll stick to it out of rebellion.

Sorry for the long epistle.
Religion / Scared! I Don't Believe In God, And You People Scare Me by omoolomo2: 6:16pm On Jan 18, 2008
I grew up in church, was in the choir, was an usher, wrote for the church magazine, participated in bible quizzes, sword drills, prayed, read the bible, and even once had the nickname pastor.
Now everything doesn't make any sense anymore. First, I'm in hiding because this would just devastate my family, and second, religion is too big in Nigeria that it's the worst crime someone can commit in this country. It seems Nigerians would relate more to a killer or scammer than an atheist. It seems like Nigerians would even prefer if their relative be gay than not believing in God.

Anyway, I just wanted to hear comments, questions, and of course hateful/rude responses.

Peace!

Romance / Re: Nigerian Girls In The U.S. Are Lonely by omoolomo2: 3:12am On Jan 04, 2008
Many people is lonely in the U.S., white brown, black, Nigerian, purple, Besides college students, Nigerians is go to work, sleep, go out once in a while, and maybe go to church on Sunday. U.S. is not like Naija that Nigerians is hang out in neighborhood or visit next door neighbor, cousin down the street, childhood friend one bus-stop away or church during the week, so U.S. is get plenty lonely. Loneliness is multiply in the winter in places that get plenty of snow. Plus U.S. is big, and Nigerians is not see each other very often, and when Nigerians is see each other at parties or church or whatever Nigerians is still not get to know each other due to short time.
So loneliness in U.S. is mostly due to the environment.
