7. Gastritis GASTRITIS. Acute or chronic inflammation of the stomach mucosa. Equal parts, Balm, Fennel, Peppermint. 1 heaped teaspoon to each cup boiling water: 1 cup freely. Decoction. Combine: equal parts; Marshmallow root, Meadowsweet; 2 teaspoons to each cup of water simmered gently 10 minutes. 1 cup freely. Pinch of Cinnamon improves. Carragheen Moss. 2 teaspoons to each cup water simmered 20 minutes. Do not strain. Eat from a spoon with honey. Tablets/capsules. Goldenseal, Calamus, Fenugreek. Iceland Moss. Slippery Elm. Powders. Combine: Carragheen Moss 2; Goldenseal 1. Dose: 750mg (three 00 capsules or half a teaspoon) thrice daily. Dr Alfred Vogel recommends: Combination – Centuary, Bitter Orange, Myrrh, Frankincense, Silverweed, Yellow Gentian. Rudolf F. Weiss MD. Equal parts: Fennel seed, Peppermint leaves and Calamus root. 1 teaspoon to cup boiling water; infuse 10 minutes. Drink warm, in sips, 2-3 times daily. Aloe Vera juice or gel. Tinctures. Combine equal parts Goldenseal, Myrrh. 5-10 drops in water before meals thrice daily. For gastric weakness or old age and to promote acid production: Cider vinegar: 2 teaspoons to glass of water, freely. Diet. Slippery Elm powder drinks. Papaya fruit. Supplementation. 6. Conjunctivitis CONJUNCTIVITIS. Acute red eye. Inflammation of the conjunctiva. Allergic or infective. Fifty per cent cases in hay fever season are due to allergy. Causes: environmental chemicals, drugs, feathers, animal hairs. Infections include staphylococcus, pneumococci, herpes, gonococcal (rare). Conjunctivitis never causes persistent visual disturbance. Symptoms. Watery discharge, itching, blood vessels visibly engorged, sensation of grit, mucopus discharge may cause lids to stick together. A casual attitude to Conjunctivitis can no longer be justified. Prolonged use of antibiotics and corticosteriods is best avoided, where possible. Eye infections of virus origin become more common. A simple douche with herb teas enables eyes to stay clear of most minor infections. If ‘red eye’ does not clear within 3 days refer to Eye Department of a modern hospital, especially infections from herpes (shingles). Treatment. (External). The following soothe and do not exacerbate herpes or cause glaucoma: Eyebright, Chamomile, Marshmallow, Mullein, Marigold, Fumitory, Rose petals, Melilot, Plantain, Elderflowers, Fennel, Rue, Raspberry leaves, Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera gel, Borage. Conjunctivitis of infants – Elderflowers, Rosewater. Douche. 1 teaspoon any of the above herbs to cup boiling water; infuse 15 minutes. Strain. Half-fill eye-bath for tepid douche freely. Separate baths for each eye. Internal: tablets, liquid extracts, tinctures or powders: Echinacea, Goldenseal, Myrrh, Garlic (juice, corm or capsules freely – not to children). Dr Alfred Vogel. 5. Wounds WOUNDS. A wound is a disruption of tissues in any part of the body due to injury. A contusion is bruising of soft tissues beneath the skin, with pain and swelling. A haematoma is where a local extravasation of blood occurs. A laceration is a ragged torn wound. From severe wounds there is always the possibility of collapse from shock. Internal treatment assists recovery. Alternatives. Internal. Comfrey is a demulcent-astringent-vulnerary which promotes cell proliferation and granulation of tissue, especially wounds with broken bones. Equal parts Comfrey root and Horsetail form a powerful healing combination. Also used as a compress. Marigold (Calendula) for cuts, lacerations and to arrest bleeding. Also as a compress. St John’s Wort (Hypericum). Injuries to areas rich in nerves, i.e. finger tips, toes. Shock. Protection against tetanus. Chamomile tea. Shock. Also to cleanse. 10-20 flowers to each cup boiling water. Infected purulent wounds: Echinacea, Goldenseal or Myrrh. First aid antiseptics and cleansers. Mashed Garlic, Witch Hazel water, Irish Moss, Plantain juice, Houseleek juice, Tincture Myrrh, Tincture Goldenseal. Topical. Dehydration delays wound healing. Slippery Elm poultice: moisten and apply for cuts and wounds. To staunch flow of blood. See: BLEEDING. Wounds that refuse to heal. Combine tinctures: Echinacea 2; Fringe Tree 1; Horsetail 1. Two teaspoons in water thrice daily. Edgar Cayce: “apply soft pad of cloth saturated with Castor oil overnight; for a few nights, and keep in place with an elastic bandage”. Pain or discomfort from scar formation. Apply Castor oil. Gunshot wounds. Equal parts, tinctures, Echinacea and Myrrh. 30-60 drops every 3 hours. (World War 1) Wine. 4. RHEUMATIC FEVER. An acute feverish bacterial infection with inflammation of joints and the heart. Joints: hot, painful, enlarged. Mostly children 5-15 years. Moves from joint to joint. Sustained fever may affect the brain (chorea), skin (erythema) and heart (carditis). Night sweats. Streptococcal infection first invades the throat 2 or 3 weeks before affecting the joints. Swollen joints and pericardial effusion subside but may be followed by a heart problem in later life. Differs from juvenile arthritis and osteomyelitis. “It hurts just to be touched.” First consideration is to arrest the spread of streptococcal infection (Echinacea). Other antibacterials: Wild Indigo (Baptisia), Holy Thistle (Cnicus), Myrrh (Commiphora). Treatment. Complete bedrest during active synovitis. Treatment for heart failure as well as inflamed joints. Alternatives. Agrimony, Balm of Gilead, Balmony, Bogbean, Heather flowers, Meadowsweet, Motherwort, Yarrow. Tea. Equal parts: Holy Thistle, German Chamomile, Yarrow. Mix. 1 heaped teaspoon to each cup boiling water; infuse 15 minutes; 1 cup every 2 hours for acute condition. Tablets/capsules. Devil’s Claw, Echinacea, Hawthorn, Motherwort. Alternative formulae:– Powders: Echinacea 2; White Poplar 1; Bogbean 1; Guaiacum quarter. Mix. Dose: 500mg every 2 hours for acute condition. Liquid extracts: Echinacea 2; Prickly Ash 1; Hawthorn 1; Guaiacum quarter; Liquorice quarter. Mix. Dose: 1 teaspoon. Every 2 hours for acute condition. Tinctures. Echinacea 2; Meadowsweet 2; Motherwort 1; Devil’s Claw 1. Mix. Dose: 1-2 teaspoons every 2 hours for acute condition. Childrens’ dose: quarter to half adult dose. Topical. Bathe joints with strong infusion of Lobelia, Ragwort, Chickweed or Wintergreen. Plantain salve. Camphorated oil. Comfrey leaf poultice. Tea Tree oil: 2 drops to 2 teaspoons Almond oil. Diet. 3-day fast on fruit juices and herb teas. Vitamin C drinks (orange, lemon juice). Followed by lacto-vegetarian diet and regular raw food days. Salt-free. Supplements. 2. ABSCESS. A collection of pus in a cavity, consisting of spent white blood cells and dead invading micro-organisms. The body’s fight against localised infection may result in suppuration – the discharge of pus. An abscess may appear on any part of the body: ear, nose, throat, teeth, gums, or on the skin as a pimple, boil, stye. A ‘grumbling appendix’ is one form of abscess, caused by internal obstruction and irritation. Internal abscesses are usually accompanied by fever, with malaise and swollen glands under arms, groin or elsewhere. Septicaemia – a dangerous form of blood poisoning – may result where an abscess bursts and discharges purulent matter into the bloodstream. Abscess of the rectum (anorectal, ischiorectal, perianal) can be exceedingly painful. Chiefly from E. Coli infection, it may be associated with piles, colitis, fissures or small tears in the mucosa from hard faeces. There may be throbbing pain on sitting or defecation. In all cases Echinacea should be given to sustain the immune system. Alternatives. I Abundant herb teas. Burdock leaves, Clivers, Comfrey leaves, Figwort, Gotu Kola, Ground Ivy, Horsetail, Marigold petals, Marshmallow leaves, Mullein, Plantain, Red Clover tops. 1 heaped teaspoon to each cup boiling water: drink half-1 cup thrice daily. Mixture: Tinctures. Echinacea 30ml; Blue Flag 15ml; Bayberry 5ml; Hydrastis can 1ml; Liquorice 1ml. Dose: One 5ml teaspoon in water, honey or fruit juice thrice daily. Tablets/capsules. Blue Flag, Echinacea, Poke root, Red Clover, Seaweed and Sarsaparilla, Garlic (or capsules): dosage as on bottle. Powders. Formula. Echinacea 1; Marshmallow root 1; Goldenseal quarter. Dose: 500mg (one-third teaspoon, or two 00 capsules), thrice daily. Ointments or poultices: Aloe Vera, Comfrey, Marshmallow and Slippery Elm. Abscess of the breast. Internal mixture as above. Enlargement of abdominal glands is often associated with tonsillitis or glandular disease elsewhere which responds well to Poke root. As a blanket treatment for abdominal pains in general, old-time physicians used Turkey Rhubarb (with, or without Cardamom seed) to prevent griping. Diet. No food until inflammation disperses.
