A pressure group representing the interests of staff of Nigerian polytechnics has embarked on a warning strike to attract the attention of the government to its urgent demands. Polytechnic lecturers, under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), will begin a nationwide one-week warning strike from Monday next week. Already, the union has directed its members in all public polytechnics across the federation to ensure total compliance. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, President of ASUP, Usman Dutse, said there would be no academic and administrative activity any public polytechnic between 12 noon of 30 January, 2017 and 6 February, 2017. He said: “The union therefore resolved at the emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), held on the 25 January 2017 to embark on a one week warning strike effective 12 noon, January 30, 2017 to 6 February 2017 in the first instance. “Members are therefore directed to ensure total compliance as no academic and administrative activity is expected in any public polytechnic across Nigeria within the period; and await further directives from the union’s organs.” Comrade Dutse pointed out that the union had on two occasions in July and November last year communicated the decision of its NEC to withdraw the services of its members if a number of issues identified as undermining the sector are not addressed. Specifically, on 14 November 2016, the correspondence to government conveyed a one month ultimatum to the government on the issues in contention. Regrettably, the ASUP president stated that despite “the severity of the issues listed, government has not, within the intervening period demonstrated enough passion to address them , leaving the union with no choice especially as we have demonstrated enough patience in deferring the decision since August 2016.” The issues in contention include the non-implementation of the report of the NEEDS Assessment report which as at July 2014 revealed that public polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria require injection of minimum of N652.6million to address the rot in infrastructure in the sector; sustained poor funding of public polytechnics as shown in the poor but yet unimplemented capital grant to polytechnics and deliberate attempts at frustrating the resolution of the meeting of the Council on Establishment held in July 2016 on the removal of entry level dichotomy against HND holders . Other issues are victimization of union officials, non-release of union check off dues and interference in union activities; non-release of CONTISS 15 migration arrears; release of visitation panel report of Federal polytechnics and report of Ministerial panels to Federal polytechnics in Auchincloss, Oko’ Yaba and Ado-Ekiti; delay in the review of the Federal Polytechnic Act; non-commencement of renegotiation of the ASUP/government agreement of 2010 and government’s tardiness in the appointment of Rectors of Federal polytechnics. |

MAKE NYSC OPTIONAL My name is olakunle alexandria ,a freshgraduate of the university of Abuja. Last week, Igot some disturbing information as regard to theNYSC mobilisation of prospective corp membersand I want everyone of us to be aware of the evilthat is about to befall all fresh graduates andstudents if urgent measures/precautions ainttaken. It is no more news that the number ofprospective corp members in all institutions forBatch B have been drastically slashed due to"tight budgetary allocation", I guess we owe thisto the present economic recession.Unizik for example has been slashed from 2314 to894,hmmm that's jst like one third of theprospective members.Uniabuja not excluded canonly mobilize 546 members, this is even less thanthe total number of graduates in threedepartments of the institution. My question nowis what happens to the backlog? I guess theanswer is they have to wait till the next batch andwith this numbers, it is certain not all of them willmake it to another batch. It has been proved that 70% of Batch B(formerlybatch C) corp members are those that had extrasemester or their academic calendar wasinterrupted and d remaining 30% are freshgraduates from schools whose academic calendarare faster or barely interrupted. This furtherindicates that fresh graduates waiting for batch Amay even triple this recent number. if mycalculation is right, some of us might have to wait2-3yrs before youth service. This would have beenok if without NYSC certificate I can1. Be eligible to compete in the labour market.2. Go for my masters degreeBut the sad news is without the certificate wecan't achieve all this,so all we have to do is 'wait'?Even if it takes years? We understand the country is going througheconomic recession but should the lives of weyouth also recede because of it? I say a capital NOto that! what happens to those that are close to3o and hence might be deprived of NYSCprogramme if the delay should persist. So allthose waiting period turns to exercise in futility.smh.As much as I love to wear that khaki,I wouldn'twant to waste precious years of my life at theexpense of wearing it. In a country where most ofus have used extra years in studying due to Asuustrikes and other internal strikes. In a countrywhere your age really matters in the labourmarket. In a country where even after NYSC,70%of graduates are unable to get jobs untill after2yrs or more. In a country where we give moreattention and respect to what is written in thepaper than what is 'in the head'. In a countrywhere young graduates are being asked topresent evidence of 5yrs of working experiencebefore they can be employed. We all need to rise and stop this evil before itstops us. Government shouldn't gamble with ourfuture if they can't cater for all of us at once. letNYSC be OPTIONAL and stop making obnoxiousdecisions that are detrimental to our future.Join me in spreading this message with#makeNYSCoptional#LivesofyouthmattersWe can no longer sit and watch while our futurebeing toiled with. You can also attach your ownreasons why you think NYSC should be optional. You may not be concerned but please for thesake of people around you who may be affected, let's all repost this message and#makeNYSCoptional trend till it gets to the rightchannel. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeriaand God bless you all.#makeNYSCoptional##makeNYSCoptional# |

Dandsome:i hate people making this delusive statement " shebi u wanted change.. and you have seen change"... if I should investigate now, u will be among those that collected buhari rice, maggi and indomie during the campaign season..... now to the point , apart from buhari and Jonathan , please tell me another candidate that you know and you can vote for amongst those that contested..if not the two of them... |
at least 17hrs a day here in Kubwa abuja....they are actually working here...... |
amtaken:amen in Jesus name... maybe in the nearest future... Unilag no even dey among... is it the always irritating hostels or the bad old unplanned European structures there... if not size ,yabatech is by far beautiful than that Unilag.......... |
@at boye... God is about to pick our call on regularisation... please mobilize ur interested friends to dean of student affairs on Monday.... he just need confirmation from registrar to compile our names with the HND student for regularization number which is supposed to be taken to abuja..within this month... |
Temitope012:please ooo dis is my number 08114840804 |
wallai.... tomorrow go hot for those people at yabatech.... if na TVC or radio Nigeria go settle our case...we paid for regularization in our first year... hope u remember @ ayamboye.... the nd1 receipt go talk tomorrow by itself at education office if no positive reply is obtainable ..... |
yabatech oooo... I am really tired, in the first year, the regularization fee of 5000 was included in our school fee in which we all paid.... now we are in need of this thing, it is even more painful when they show this ""I don't care attitude like ' we don't even know what regularization is'"... we are tired of begging them....even with our money... if I say it will not be well with them, will it not be too much. |
kaysy:ooga go sit down one place first. . we dey talk beta issue here....mtcheeww... so annoying |
tingFanG:please does that implies we can use other diploma for the mean time ....? |
Joel3:common sense is not common.... y can't you get a recruitment form for yourself and ur uncle and tell us how easy it is.... |
kaysy:bros... In as much as I believe u, I will want to get this level of assurance.... IS IT SURE.....!!!!!!! |
it now seems to me now that we seriously as a matter of urgency stage a small protest on this regularization issue. it seems they are not even aware of what is going on... if I should calculate the transport fare, going and coming from jamb office, to school ... it is almost amounting to getting three D.E form... it is getting frustrating ..the school will say one thing, jamb will say another ... |
AyarmBoye:I have not, possibly on Tuesday.... 08114840804 |
