Politics / Gov Akeredolu Releases N1bn For Retired Teachers, LG Workers In Ondo by OndoFirstBorn(m): 9:10am On Dec 01, 2023
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has flagged off the payment of N1bn as a gratuity to teachers and local government workers who retired in 2011.

Akeredolu, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye, said the N1bn was sourced from the October allocation from the federation account.

He said the payment of N1bn marked a gradual defrayment of the backlog of gratuity arrears for retirees of Local Government and Primary school teachers.

According to him, “another tranche would soon be paid within the first quarter of next year.

Some pensioners who retired in 2012 were paid, while those the government termed distressed benefitted from the N1bn payment.

The governor said that his administration has fully paid all outstanding salaries and pensions, including the allowances of all retirees left by the previous administration.

“We want to make sure pensioners in the state do not suffer anymore. We are making efforts to rid our communities of miscreants and criminals, as well as those who engage in cult-related activities in our dear state.

“The State Government is continually committing enormous resources to strengthening the Amotekun Corps in terms of equipment and human resources.

“This is in addition to the provision of funds and other logistical support to other sister security agencies operating in Ondo State. Our government cannot tolerate a situation where our citizens cannot conduct their daily businesses in a safe environment.”

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Takuro Amidu, said the payment of the gratuity was initiated by Governor Akeredolu by ensuring that some money was saved every month.

Amidu said that Governor Akeredolu was poised to take care of senior citizens.

Some of the pensioners said it was suicidal for them to survive 12 years without collecting their gratuities.

Many of them said that they would use a chunk of the money to pay accumulated debts.

One of them, Chief Ojo Samuel, said it was difficult for him to cope with life situations after he retired and his gratuity was not paid.

“We thank God we are alive to collect and enjoy our benefit.”

The chairman of pensioners in Ondo State, Johnson Osunyemi, said the payment of N1bn was a reassurance that the governor would do more for them.

Osunyemi said pensioners have not witnessed such a good gesture in the state.

Politics / Impeachment: Your Ex-parte Injunction Can't Stop Us, Ondo Speaker To Aiyedatiwa by OndoFirstBorn(m): 8:32pm On Sep 26, 2023
Impeachment: Your ex-parte injunction cannot stop us, Ondo speaker tells Aiyedatiwa
Aiyedatiwa

The Ondo state House of Assembly has said the ex-parte injunction secured by the deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, would not stop it from continuing its legislative functions to investigate allegations levelled against him, describing it as unconstitutional.

The Assembly clarified that the impeachment notice outlined 14 specific allegations of gross misconduct, providing detailed particulars, saying that the deputy governor was required to respond within 7 days from the day of being served.

The allegations encompassed financial mismanagement, misuse of authority with potential harm to the Ondo state government, and publicized statements in the print media that tarnished the Governor’s reputation.

Speaker of the Ondo Assembly, Oladiji Olamide Adesanmi, in a statement issued Tuesday evening, September 26, said the Assembly would strictly follow due process of law as outlined in Section 188(1) – (9) of the Constitution.

According to him, “The House is not unaware of media reports that His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, has rushed to Court to stop the impeachment process. Media reports even claim he has secured an injunction from a certain Judge of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to halt the process.

“The House is shocked that rather than wait to be served with notice of the allegation of gross misconduct, and react to same as required by the Constitution, the Deputy Governor has been running from pillar to post and filing multiple suits in both at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court and the Ondo State High Courts in a bid to stop the legislative process.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House is fully conscious of Section 188 (10) of the Constitution which clearly states that “No proceedings or determination of the panel or of the House of Assembly or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any court.

“The House has directed its team of Lawyers to investigate the purported injunction secured by the Deputy Governor and report any judicial officer who might have abused his office in granting the unconstitutional ex-parte injunction to the appropriate institution for necessary disciplinary action.

“In conclusion, the House wishes to assure the general public that it would proceed with the legislative process to a logical conclusion, but in doing so, will strictly follow the Constitutional procedures. The House will not abdicate or compromise its sacred constitutional duty to hold elected public officers accountable, particularly where there are prima facie serious allegations of corruption and abuse of power levelled against the Deputy Governor in this case.”

Politics / Governor Akeredolu Commences Construction Of First Flyover In Akure (photos) by OndoFirstBorn(m): 9:05am On Jul 26, 2023
•••We’ll Work Till The Last Day Of This Administration - Infrastructure Commissioner

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN,CON, has commenced the construction of the Onyearugbulem/Shagari/Irese flyover in furtherance of the infrastructural drive of his administration.

The flyover, when completed will be the first flyover in the state capital since the creation of Ondo State in 1976. It will also be the second flyover constructed by the Akeredolu led-administrations, following the Ore Redemption Bridge in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area.

Commissioner for infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Raimi Aminu who was at the project site for an inspection visit said the ongoing construction of the flyover and junction improvement project will address incessant carnages, facilitate the smooth flow of traffic, and eliminate the long queue of vehicles along the axis, while adding to aesthetic beauty of the area.

The commissioner assured that the project would be completed in less than 18 months.

He disclosed that the State Government has paid over N300m as compensation to about 57 claimants whose properties fell within the rights-of-way in order to give way for the project.

Aminu noted that the magnitude of compensation is the highest so far paid on any project by this government to property owners, adding that those who claimed government did not adequately compensate them are just economical with the truth.

He explained that the Land Use Act (1978) vested the ownership of lands in governments, hence the market value of any land is not considered according to the act.

However, the Infrastructure Commissioner said that it was expedient for government to consider appropriately the value of properties and developments affected.

Aminu explained that the construction of the flyover became imperative due to frequent loss of lives occasioned by incessant accidents and traffic gridlock along the road corridor.

The Commissioner particularly commended Governor Akeredolu for his unwavering commitment to infrastructural development across the state.

He assured that the Akeredolu's administration would continue to execute projects and programmes that would make lives more meaningful to the people and residents of the state till the last day of the administration.

"This is the first flyover in Akure metropolis, the capital of Ondo State. It is a very significant step in the life of this state and represent a step in the right direction of enhancing the infrastructural development of our dear state.”

"It is in public domain that this junction is a very critical one and has recorded notable carnages which claimed lives of innocent citizens. The development over time had become worrisome and hence the directive of Mr. Governor to look for a permanent solution to the problem”

“After conducting various investigations, observations and census, we inferred that the most expedient solution to the traffic problem at the junction was to divest the traffic by introducing change in elevation and grades. This no doubt pointed us in the direction of the construction of flyover bridge as a major intervention.

"You can observe the gridlocks every morning and evening being the peak periods in the morning when people are going to work, there is always a traffic gridlock but to control the traffic flow while not obstructing the free flow on the federal highway, we adopted the option to have a flyover here.

While describing the configurations of the bridge, Aminu said “the bridge superstructure comprise of a 12m carriageway, 9 spans of 15m bridge with a 30meters mid-span prestressed beam spanning across the federal highway. All this are well founded on over 160 numbers of foundation piles.

“The long midspan is adopted in order to cater for any contingent future proposal of the federal government to expand the federal highway. So far the contractor has installed over 60 numbers and all things been equal, the contractor will complete the piling work soon.”.

“Besides, we paid special attention to the control of the run-offs, and this account for why we have a major culvert at the stream course where we could safely discharge the anticipated accumulation, because we are controlling all the run out here.

"The progress recorded so far is impressive considering the period since commencement of actual work on site. Notwithstanding, the ministry still deployed the full complement of supervision teams to supervise them – the consultant is also here, the laboratory is here to ensure quality of materials and workmanship.

"Our Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, CON is a man of integrity, anything he says he does it. He promised the people of Ondo State that he will work till his last day in office, and that is what we have been witnessing”.

"This government is working and will continue to work, more so as Mr Governor has promised to work from the very first day. You can recall that the next day after the swearing-in of his second term in office, we went to Idanre to commission a 15.5km length of road and since then we have been to every senatorial district in the state, and you can attest to the fact that in nearly all the local government there is a construction site.

“Mr. Governor is not a man that will tell you what you want to hear, but what he can do and anything he says he will do it.”

The Commissioner appealed to the owners of properties that were acquired in order to pave way for the construction to see it as a sacrifice in the overriding interest of the public.

“Their contributions will never be forgotten even by generations unborn. Although the affected owners have been duly compensated by government, we feel their pains but we believe in the gains.

“This account for why we allowed sufficient time for them to effect their relocations, and we adopted stage-wise construction in sections so as to minimize the trauma.” He added.

Earlier, the Project Engineer for the Onyearugbulem / Shagari / Irese flyover and Junction improvement project, Tosin Adebayo, said they have been on site for about three months, but were able to mobilize reasonably about four weeks ago.

"We have been on site for about three months now, but we were able to make appreciable mobilization about four weeks ago. This is not unconnected with the slow pace of compensation and the relocation of the affected occupants.

“During the past few months, we have been on our yard ensuring that preliminary works are being done such as getting our reinforcement for the piling works ready, preparation of casting bases for beams, amongst others, and preparation and possessing the yard as expected of every contractor.

"About three weeks ago, we were commenced the piling for the foundation works for each axis of the bridge. We have been able to achieve four out of ten axis of piles. We have also been able kick start beam works, with the placement and fixing of reinforcements. I assure you that in no distant time, we will commence the actual casting of the beam.

"Also, we are trying to ensure that every other work that needed to be done ahead like the culverts are fully in place without delay. Somewhere behind us, we have a 40-metre length of a 3metre x 3metre single cell box culvert, which is 50% complete", he said.

Addressing the team, Oba Ahmed Ajila of Irese and Oba Peter Adeleye of Aaye appreciated the government for the project and appealed for the construction of the Irese/Aye Road to boost transportation activities of both people and farm produce.

Politics / AKEREDOLU: We Believe In One Nigeria, But We Cannot Have One Country, 2 Systems by OndoFirstBorn(m): 1:32pm On Sep 22, 2022
We Believe In One Nigeria, But We Cannot Have One Country, Two Systems

The video making the rounds showing the equivalent of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun Corps) in Katsina, obtaining the approval of the Federal Government to bear arms is fraught with great dangers. Denying Amotekun the urgently needed rights, to legitimately bear arms is a repudiation of the basis of true federalism which we have been clamoring for.

That Katsina was able to arm its state security force, with the display of AK47 means we are pursuing one country, two systems " solution to the national question. If the katsina situation conferring advantages on some, in the face of commonly faced existential threats, it means that our unitary policing system, which has failed, is a deliberate method of subjugation which must be challenged.

The Independence agreement was based on a democratic arrangement to have a federal state and devolved internal security mechanics. We must go back to that agreement. Denying Amotekun the right to bear arms exposes the Southwest to life-threatening marauders and organized crime. It is also a deliberate destruction of our agricultural sector. It is an existential threat.

We want to reiterate, that what is sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander. Ondo State government under the doctrine of necessity have decided to fulfil its legal, constitutional and moral duty to the citizens of the State, by acquiring arms to protect them. This is more so, given that the bandits have an unchecked access to sophisticated weapons. The State government cannot look on while its citizens are being terrorized and murdered with impunity. We will defend our people.

Signed:
Arakunrin Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu, SAN,
Governor, Ondo State.
