Politics / Sunshine House: Akeredolu, A Gift That Keeps On Giving by OndoFirstBorn(m): 8:54am On Jun 24 |
"True leadership lies in planting seeds for trees whose shade you may never sit under." On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Ondo State's Sunshine House in Lagos was commissioned after 25 years of neglect, marking a significant milestone for the state. The Sunshine House, which was conceptualized by the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, was flagged off in March 2022 and was slated for completion within 24 months. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Akeredolu disclosed that the building was among the Oodua House properties shared among the member states in the Southwest. He expressed dismay at the dilapidated state of the structure allocated to Ondo State, which had been entirely neglected over the years. Governor Akeredolu emphasized that the Sunshine House would serve as an additional revenue stream for the state, with an expected annual rent generation exceeding N300 million. "This investment promises to yield bountiful dividends for the people of Ondo State. Investment in real estate is the current trend in the global economy. We can also safely project a combined rent of N310 million yearly,” Akeredolu said. The Sunshine House is the first development on the site in 25 years. It is also the first in a series of ambitious projects by the Akeredolu-led administration in the city of Lagos. The construction of the Sunshine House underscores the late Governor Akeredolu's vision and commitment to advancing Ondo State's economic interests through strategic investments in real estate. This landmark project is expected to catalyze further development and attract investment, positioning Ondo State as a key player in the regional economy. There is no gainsaying when one says that Governor Akeredolu’s contributions transcend time; they are the foundations upon which future generations will build and thrive. The Sunshine House stands as a testament to this enduring legacy, embodying a vision that will continue to benefit the people of Ondo State for many years to come. _Adesola Adekanye Writes from Akure_

Politics / Late Governor Akeredolu's Family Announces Scholarship Fund For Lawyers by OndoFirstBorn(m): 8:25am On Jun 06 |
...As NBA Ibadan commissions Bar centre to immortalise him ...He deserves the honour - CJN In recognition of the ineffaceable legacies imprinted on the surface of the earth by the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, the Nigerian Bar Association Ibadan branch, on Wednesday commissioned a Bar centre annex, to memorialize him. This was as the late Governor’s family announced the establishment of an annual law Scholarship in his memory, named Oluwarotimi Akeredolu Scholarship Fund for Lawyers, aimed at supporting aspiring students in the Nigerian Law school. In her opening remarks, the NBA Chairman of the branch, Mrs. Folasade Aladeniyi noted that the project, which was envisioned to serve as a source of income to the bar association was named after late Governor Akeredolu being a promoter of the rule of law, advocate of justice and for his outstanding leadership style in Nigeria. She lauded the unalloyed support of the late former NBA President and former chairman of the Ibadan branch towards the establishment of the Bar centre annex, noting that, although he’s dead, his legacies remained unforgettable. Announcing the establishment of the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu Scholarship Fund for Lawyers, his widow, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, who spoke on behalf of the family informed that the Scholarship was in recognition of his love and immense contributions to the legal profession in Nigeria and to appreciate his legacy of excellence. “This scholarship will be awarded annually to aspiring lawyers who have been admitted to the Nigerian Law School, and who demonstrate academic merit, leadership potential, and financial need. The scholarship will cover the full tuition and living expenses of the recipients for the duration of their studies at the Nigerian Law School. Details of its takeoff will be provided in due course. “The aim of this scholarship is to honor the memory and the vision of Aketi, and to support the development and advancement of the legal profession in Nigeria. The scholarship is also a way of expressing our gratitude to the Nigerian Bar Association, and especially to the Ibadan branch, for honoring my husband and our father with this naming ceremony. We hope that this scholarship will inspire and empower the next generation of lawyers, who will uphold the values and principles that Aketi embodied and exemplified”, she asserted. While eulogising her late husband, the Akeredolu’s matriarch described him as a fearless critic of injustice, corruption and tyranny who was committed to fighting for the rights and interests of the marginalized and oppressed Nigerians. She further described him as the father of the modern Ondo state who prioritized good governance through implementation of developmental policies and programmes that touched lives, including empowerment of women and girls. Her words: “He was a defender of the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, and the separation of powers. He was a promoter of national unity, regional integration, and continental cooperation. He was an advocate who spoke truth to power, and who stood for the common good. “As a philanthropist, he gave generously to various causes and organizations that supported education, sports, religion, and social welfare. He was a benefactor of many individuals and groups who needed financial or material assistance. He was a patron of many associations and clubs that fostered professional development, social interaction, and community service. “As a family man, he was a loving and faithful husband, a caring and supportive father and grandfather, a loyal and protective brother, and a kind and generous uncle. He was a pillar of strength, a source of joy, and a fountain of love for his family. He was a family man who cherished and nurtured his family, and who made them proud”. She therefore, appreciated the NBA Ibadan branch for the decision to celebrate him by immortalising him with the edifice. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola GCON, who commissioned the centre, affirmed that Aketi was a great Ibadan Bar man who indeed, deserved the honour done to him by the branch. He added that the honour would serve as a good memory for Aketi’s family, and as a testament of his commitment to the Bar, hinting that the late Governor had promised to come back to the Bar after politics before his demise. “Akeredolu deserved what the Ibadan branch has done for him. There’s no reason this could not be done for him. He will not forget you because he sees us, I thank you very much and I’m sure Aketi’s family and his children will be happy”. He said. Also speaking, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, said the Late Akeredolu left indelible and visible legacies that people derived joy in. •••We’ll Work Till The Last Day Of This Administration - Infrastructure Commissioner Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN,CON, has commenced the construction of the Onyearugbulem/Shagari/Irese flyover in furtherance of the infrastructural drive of his administration. The flyover, when completed will be the first flyover in the state capital since the creation of Ondo State in 1976. It will also be the second flyover constructed by the Akeredolu led-administrations, following the Ore Redemption Bridge in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area. Commissioner for infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Raimi Aminu who was at the project site for an inspection visit said the ongoing construction of the flyover and junction improvement project will address incessant carnages, facilitate the smooth flow of traffic, and eliminate the long queue of vehicles along the axis, while adding to aesthetic beauty of the area. The commissioner assured that the project would be completed in less than 18 months. He disclosed that the State Government has paid over N300m as compensation to about 57 claimants whose properties fell within the rights-of-way in order to give way for the project. Aminu noted that the magnitude of compensation is the highest so far paid on any project by this government to property owners, adding that those who claimed government did not adequately compensate them are just economical with the truth. He explained that the Land Use Act (1978) vested the ownership of lands in governments, hence the market value of any land is not considered according to the act. However, the Infrastructure Commissioner said that it was expedient for government to consider appropriately the value of properties and developments affected. Aminu explained that the construction of the flyover became imperative due to frequent loss of lives occasioned by incessant accidents and traffic gridlock along the road corridor. The Commissioner particularly commended Governor Akeredolu for his unwavering commitment to infrastructural development across the state. He assured that the Akeredolu's administration would continue to execute projects and programmes that would make lives more meaningful to the people and residents of the state till the last day of the administration. "This is the first flyover in Akure metropolis, the capital of Ondo State. It is a very significant step in the life of this state and represent a step in the right direction of enhancing the infrastructural development of our dear state.” "It is in public domain that this junction is a very critical one and has recorded notable carnages which claimed lives of innocent citizens. The development over time had become worrisome and hence the directive of Mr. Governor to look for a permanent solution to the problem” “After conducting various investigations, observations and census, we inferred that the most expedient solution to the traffic problem at the junction was to divest the traffic by introducing change in elevation and grades. This no doubt pointed us in the direction of the construction of flyover bridge as a major intervention. "You can observe the gridlocks every morning and evening being the peak periods in the morning when people are going to work, there is always a traffic gridlock but to control the traffic flow while not obstructing the free flow on the federal highway, we adopted the option to have a flyover here. While describing the configurations of the bridge, Aminu said “the bridge superstructure comprise of a 12m carriageway, 9 spans of 15m bridge with a 30meters mid-span prestressed beam spanning across the federal highway. All this are well founded on over 160 numbers of foundation piles. “The long midspan is adopted in order to cater for any contingent future proposal of the federal government to expand the federal highway. So far the contractor has installed over 60 numbers and all things been equal, the contractor will complete the piling work soon.”. “Besides, we paid special attention to the control of the run-offs, and this account for why we have a major culvert at the stream course where we could safely discharge the anticipated accumulation, because we are controlling all the run out here. "The progress recorded so far is impressive considering the period since commencement of actual work on site. Notwithstanding, the ministry still deployed the full complement of supervision teams to supervise them – the consultant is also here, the laboratory is here to ensure quality of materials and workmanship. "Our Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, CON is a man of integrity, anything he says he does it. He promised the people of Ondo State that he will work till his last day in office, and that is what we have been witnessing”. "This government is working and will continue to work, more so as Mr Governor has promised to work from the very first day. You can recall that the next day after the swearing-in of his second term in office, we went to Idanre to commission a 15.5km length of road and since then we have been to every senatorial district in the state, and you can attest to the fact that in nearly all the local government there is a construction site. “Mr. Governor is not a man that will tell you what you want to hear, but what he can do and anything he says he will do it.” The Commissioner appealed to the owners of properties that were acquired in order to pave way for the construction to see it as a sacrifice in the overriding interest of the public. “Their contributions will never be forgotten even by generations unborn. Although the affected owners have been duly compensated by government, we feel their pains but we believe in the gains. “This account for why we allowed sufficient time for them to effect their relocations, and we adopted stage-wise construction in sections so as to minimize the trauma.” He added. Earlier, the Project Engineer for the Onyearugbulem / Shagari / Irese flyover and Junction improvement project, Tosin Adebayo, said they have been on site for about three months, but were able to mobilize reasonably about four weeks ago. "We have been on site for about three months now, but we were able to make appreciable mobilization about four weeks ago. This is not unconnected with the slow pace of compensation and the relocation of the affected occupants. “During the past few months, we have been on our yard ensuring that preliminary works are being done such as getting our reinforcement for the piling works ready, preparation of casting bases for beams, amongst others, and preparation and possessing the yard as expected of every contractor. "About three weeks ago, we were commenced the piling for the foundation works for each axis of the bridge. We have been able to achieve four out of ten axis of piles. We have also been able kick start beam works, with the placement and fixing of reinforcements. I assure you that in no distant time, we will commence the actual casting of the beam. "Also, we are trying to ensure that every other work that needed to be done ahead like the culverts are fully in place without delay. Somewhere behind us, we have a 40-metre length of a 3metre x 3metre single cell box culvert, which is 50% complete", he said. Addressing the team, Oba Ahmed Ajila of Irese and Oba Peter Adeleye of Aaye appreciated the government for the project and appealed for the construction of the Irese/Aye Road to boost transportation activities of both people and farm produce. Politics / AKEREDOLU: We Believe In One Nigeria, But We Cannot Have One Country, 2 Systems by OndoFirstBorn(m): 1:32pm On Sep 22, 2022 |
We Believe In One Nigeria, But We Cannot Have One Country, Two Systems The video making the rounds showing the equivalent of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun Corps) in Katsina, obtaining the approval of the Federal Government to bear arms is fraught with great dangers. Denying Amotekun the urgently needed rights, to legitimately bear arms is a repudiation of the basis of true federalism which we have been clamoring for. That Katsina was able to arm its state security force, with the display of AK47 means we are pursuing one country, two systems " solution to the national question. If the katsina situation conferring advantages on some, in the face of commonly faced existential threats, it means that our unitary policing system, which has failed, is a deliberate method of subjugation which must be challenged. The Independence agreement was based on a democratic arrangement to have a federal state and devolved internal security mechanics. We must go back to that agreement. Denying Amotekun the right to bear arms exposes the Southwest to life-threatening marauders and organized crime. It is also a deliberate destruction of our agricultural sector. It is an existential threat. We want to reiterate, that what is sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander. Ondo State government under the doctrine of necessity have decided to fulfil its legal, constitutional and moral duty to the citizens of the State, by acquiring arms to protect them. This is more so, given that the bandits have an unchecked access to sophisticated weapons. The State government cannot look on while its citizens are being terrorized and murdered with impunity. We will defend our people. Signed: Arakunrin Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu, SAN, Governor, Ondo State. https://twitter.com/RotimiAkeredolu/status/1572894179151482881?t=JKphtAn37DR9qsKpigZiDA&s=19 1 Like 1 Share
