I'm not disputing it might be a stolen car, but we learn to unlearn. I logged In to Reddit just now to see why VIN can be tampered with and I saw many folks having different reasons. Stolen is one of it not all of it.

Not sure you are correct with the accusation either; STOLEN used in the subject was used to catch attention.

As other people have said, it might be for other reasons and I'm not disputing that.

Not sure change of ECU can make the VIN to change.

Experts in the house should talk on that.

As for me, every VIN number is different, and a VIN number will not change during the lifetime of a vehicle. Think of your car's VIN number like its DNA—it's unique to your vehicle, doesn't change, and can provide valuable information about the vehicle.

Smart people also do it for stolen car thats why is good investigate well before you buy a car.

Two reasons why dealer tamper with vin is sometimes they want to sell Nigeria used car as tokumbo, or a heavy accidented car.
Seen two vin in a car don't necessarily mean its stolen car....

In this case, it is not said to be tokunbo nor is it an accidented car. In fact, it was said to be used but unregistered.

You have no right to come to the public and declare a car was stolen just because your computer told you VIN doesn't match.

If you can properly identify the seller, and it happens he's genuine, and there are other reasons for this apparent discrepancy, I would sue you for defamation

It will make more sense if you explain or prove otherwise in a case a car carries VIN in different places different from its factory VIN. Guess you haven't heard of VIN tampering which is mostly done when a car is stolen.


Even the seller couldn't say anything nor rant because he knew the big problem he could eventually get into.

VINs, chassis numbers, and engine numbers

This is known as VIN cloning and it is highly illegal.

Under no circumstances should there ever be any discrepancies when it comes to the VIN number on a car. The system is supposed to be clear, so if you come across one that doesn’t match, do not purchase the car.
