Health / Diarrhea Outbreak Kills 30 In Imo State by onomefm(f): 10:14pm On Mar 15, 2016
No fewer than 30 children have so far died in Imo State as a result of fresh outbreak of diarrhea which is said to be relatively common in the 637 autonomous communities in the state due to absence of potable water.

The development it was gathered compel the residents to resort to the use of water from streams and uncertified boreholes for consumption.

Speaking when she received a delegation from the Nigeria Agip Oil Company Limited, the commissioner for Health, Ngozi Njoku, said that the death toll from the outbreak of the deadly disease had risen to 30 in the last few weeks, while several others affected by the scourge were receiving treatment in various hospitals in the state.

She said that four children died last month as a result of the infection in Nekede, in the Owerri West council area.

Politics / IPOB Blasts Okorocha, Calls Him A Disgrace To Ndigbo by onomefm(f): 11:22am On Mar 13, 2016
The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), has told Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha that “he is the one that is a big disgrace to Ndigbo”.

The pro-Biafra group was reacting to a statement credited to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sam Onwuemedo, in which he described IPOB as “a disgrace to Ndigbo”.

It would be recalled an IPOB member disrupted Okorocha’s speech presentation at the Chatham House, London, on Wednesday.

The unidentified IPOB supporter, who was armed with a Biafran flag, moved towards the podium while the governor was presenting his speech, lamenting that no one is doing anything about the plight of Biafran agitators in Nigeria.

The chief press secretary had also told IPOB that it would be “unreasonable” for the pro-Biafra group “to think Okorocha can be one of them”.

Onwuemedo further stated that the invasion of the venue by IPOB with the aim of disrupting the governor’s speech has discredited the group’s true claim of agitating for a true Igbo nation, even as he claimed that Okorocha’s refusal to support their agitation led to the attack on his person at the Chatham House.

But in a swift reaction, IPOB lambasted Okorocha for what it called his anti-Biafra activities and utterances, warning him to “guard his utterances about Biafra to avoid regrets”.

IPOB also told Okorocha to stop parading himself as Igbo leader, saying that he lacks the capacity, confidence, and the antecedents to speak for Ndigbo “when Imo State under his watch has become a laughing stock"

The spokesperson for IPOB, Emma Powerful, who made the group’s position known on Saturday, said “Okorocha is a total disgrace to Ndigbo home and abroad”, adding that he deceived the people of Imo by pretending to be a voice for the masses only to gain power and manifest his true colour.

Powerful said that the treatment meted to Okorocha in Lon¬don was a warning to other governors in the south east states who are sabotaging the efforts to actualise an independent state of Biafra.

“What Okorocha saw in London is a warning to his colleagues who are working against Biafra interest. Similar treatments await them until they stop cooperating with our oppressors.

“Wherever they travel, IPOB will visit them in that country until they begin to condemn the killing of their brothers by the Federal Government and the security agencies.

“What happened to Okorocha will be a child’s play. We want to prove to them that we are highly committed towards the restoration of Biafra”, he said.

The IPOB spokesman vowed that there is no going back on the agitation for Biafra despite the efforts of “some highly placed selfish politicians” in connivance with their federal collaborators to frustrate the struggle.

He, however, restated that the group is totally committed to its non-violent approach in the struggle for independence.

Politics / Bailout Funds: NLC Confronts Okorocha Over Arrest Of Top Aides By The EFCC by onomefm(f): 6:41am On Mar 07, 2016
Following the arrest of top aide of the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the diversion of the bailout funds to the state, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday took a swipe at the governor, accusing him of lack of sincerity in the handling of the funds, thereby causing workers in the state untold hardship.

The EFCC had last week arrested the Principal Secretary to the governor, Dr Pascal Obi over allegation of diverting about N2 billion collected by the state from the federal government as part of bailout funds for states.

But according to the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, “the arrest of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s top aides by the EFCC for allegedly diverting part of the N2billion bailout funds meant for Imo State did not come as a surprise to us at the NLC.

“The lack of transparency in the handling of the funds wherein stakeholders for whom the funds were meant were kept in the dark as to the availability of the funds in the first place flew the red flag for us.

“Curiously rather than apply the funds to cushion the hardship months of salary arrears indebtedness had caused workers, the Imo Governor chose instead to summarily shut down government establishments and force workers out with backlog of unpaid salaries.

“We were not fooled by the governor’s claim of lack of funds to pay salaries as he clearly could not show where he had channelled the Bailout funds. Thus, our shutting down Imo State over two weeks ago through mass protests and strike action by workers has been vindicated,” the NLC president stressed.

Wabba explained: It is pertinent to point out here that most of our state and local governments have not keyed into the president’s passion, to change the way public funds are cornered as personal resources of the executives in power. This watery appetite for quickly channeling allocation from the centre, including loans, into personal accounts of the executives and their aides and cronies must be focused upon by the anti-graft agencies.

“We call on ICPC and EFCC to monitor the disbursement of the Bailout funds across the states. We further challenge the state governments in the spirit of the President’s gesture to publish how they have disbursed the funds.

“The alleged looting of public funds by the Imo State Government must be discouraged. The crave for looting of state resources by a few privileged persons in government while turning around to unleash wickedness on innocent and harpless workers through owing of salaries and crude redundancy disengagements will no more be left unchallenged.

“We recommit ourselves to eternal vigilance and never again will workers be sacrificed to oil the watery appetite for stealing by chief executives of states and government agencies,” he observed.
