Religion / Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Irikefe, Has Allegedly Been Abducted By Gunmen by onomefm(f): 10:28am On Sep 07, 2016
Father Irikefe, a lecturer with Saint’s Peter and Paul Catholic Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, was said to have been kidnapped on Monday evening within the Warri/Effurun metropolis

The priest, who became a catholic priest on December 8, 2011, was said to be driving on a colleague’s car when the incident occurred.

He was said to have arrived the state on Monday afternoon to attend the burial of his friend and colleague, Rev. Fr. Amaefule Chike.

Our correspondent learnt that his car was waylaid while returning from a vigil mass for the late catholic father, who was buried (Tuesday) at the Agbarho Pastoral Centre, Ughelli North.

This is coming barely three weeks after another catholic priest, Very Rev. Fr. Magnus Alim, survived gunshot attack from a failed kidnapping attempt in the state.

Several catholic priests contacted by our correspondent confirmed Irikefe’s abduction but refused to give details of the incident including the exact location he was attacked.

A priest, who preferred not to be mentioned at the Directorate of Communication, Warri Diocese, confirmed the abduction but also refused to give details of the incident. He called on Nigerians including this reporter to pray for his release.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Celestina Kalu, in a reply to an inquiry said “the priest’s venue of kidnapped is not known or confirmed.”

Politics / Okorocha: "Preferred Man Ghost Had Slapped Me Rather Than Female Ghost" by onomefm(f): 9:20am On Aug 30, 2016
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has once again addressed the rumour of his death which made the rounds across the country in the last two weeks, describing it as a ‘desperate act of wickedness and opposition taken too far’.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha
Speaking to newsmen yesterday in Owerri, Okorocha said that not even the late elder statesman, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe suffered such widespread level of indignity as he was subjected to in the last two weeks.

He said: “The most annoying aspect of the rumour was that a female ghost slapped me. It would have been more tolerable if a man had slapped me. I am the Governor of Imo state and I govern everything in the state, I’m above any spirit or principality.

“I mean well for Imo state only that some people have refused to see beyond their biases. Nevertheless, the experience of the last two weeks has proved to me that more than 90 per cent of Imo residents support my administration and radical developmental initiatives.”

Addressing the motive behind the three-day working week policy where workers use Thursday and Friday for farming, Okorocha said the policy was to redress the ugly trend where the state depended largely on northern states for its food supply. “As we talk, the food we consume in the state, like rice, yam, tomatoes, pepper and beef, all come from the North.

If the farmers in the North cut food supply to the South East, we will face a serious challenge,” the governor said.

Politics / Imo Government Owes Pensioners N16bn – Okorocha by onomefm(f): 8:24pm On Aug 29, 2016
Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo on Monday said that the total pension burden hanging on Imo Government as at July, 2016, is more than N16 billion.

Okorocha, who made the disclosure during a news conference in Owerri, said his priority now is how to offset the pension burden.
“As we talk, my priority now is to clear the entire pension owe Imo retirees.

“How I will do that is only what is before me now and I will address that soonest, “ he said.
The governor said that his administration had paid backlog of salaries owed Imo workers, adding, “the workers being owed now are only those of judiciary and Imo State University Teaching Hospital. “

Okorocha explained the motive behind the policy directing workers in the state civil service to work from Monday to Wednesday, and go to their farms on Thursdays and Fridays.
He said the policy was to redress the current trend, whereby the state depends largely on states in the northern part of the country for food.

“As we talk, the food we consume in the state like rice, yam, tomatoes, pepper, and livestock all come from the north.
“If they (north) decide to cut the food chain, we will be in serious problem,“ the governor said.
Okorocha stressed that the agricultural policy was also to enable the workers benefit from Federal Government’s agricultural initiative.

A massive explosion on Friday rocked the Secretariat of the Isoko Development Union in Oleh, a university town in Delta State, witnesses have told PREMIUM TIMES.
The huge blaze ripped through the facility, popularly known as Isoko House, hours after the union began its annual conference there.
Witnesses said the incident appeared to be a coordinated attack, but added that no group has claimed responsibility as at 5:00 p.m. Friday.

Isoko Development Union (IDU) Building Bombed
The Niger Delta, where Delta State is situated in Nigeria’s oil-rich south, has witnessed an escalation of hostilities in recent months, as militants targeted oil installations in a sustained effort to force the hands of the Nigerian government to up the region’s share of oil revenues.
Meanwhile, the union has resumed the event with its annual award ceremony currently underway, the witness said.

Crime / Panic Grips Imo State As Gunmen Kill Two, Set The Corpse Ablaze by onomefm(f): 10:06pm On Aug 26, 2016
Two people have been killed by some unknown gunmen in Imo state – The killing took place at Imo state polytechnic – The deceased were said to be have been set ablaze by the hoodlums Great pandemonium has gripped Imo state following an attack on Imo Polytechnic by some unknown gunmen.

The yet to be identified gunmen reportedly killed and set ablaze two persons in Imo state polytechnic which is at Uwuagwo, in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state (formerly, Michael Okpara College of Agriculture). Punch reports that the incident reportedly happened in the early hours of Wednesday at a students’ hostel in Mgbirichi, an adjoining town to the campus. Our correspondent gathered that some hoodlums were said to have attacked and killed Onumajuru Chibueze and his visiting friend, Chris Ukpabi, at the Infinity Hostel.

Onumajuru reportedly worked at the institution’s School of Environmental Sciences as a typist, while Ukpabi has recently graduated from the Department of Office, Technology and Management. Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr Darlington Oparaocha, said the double murder happened outside the campus. He confirmed that one of the victims had finished his final exams since 2014, but he had not finished with his clearance exercise.

Oparaocha said: “Whether they (victims) can be called graduates of the Polytechnic, I cannot tell; and whether they were killed by either armed robbers or cultists, I cannot also tell. “This is because the ugly incident happened in the wee hours of the fateful day.” He said he was aware of a robbery incident in one of the hostels adjacent to the Infinity Lodge.

Efforts by our correspondent to get more information about Onumajuru from the School of Environmental Sciences proved abortive, as no staff volunteered to talk. When contacted, the state police public relations officer, Mr Andrew, confirmed the incident. He said: “We have the report of the inhuman act. Presently, we are investigating the matter, with a view to ascertaining the circumstances that led to the deaths and the subsequent inferno that engulfed the two victims.”

Crime / Gunmen Kill Nine In Assa, Imo State by onomefm(f): 5:59am On Aug 23, 2016
No fewer than nine people have been reportedly killed after suspected cult members attacked Assa community in the Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victims were killed in a week-long attack which started last Monday.

Residents, who spoke with our correspondent, said they had deserted the community over fear of being killed by the cult members who were said to be fighting over oil deposit in the area.

One of the slain victims was identified as 32-year-old Vitalis Walata.

Walata’s relative, Kingsley Igwe, said the father of two was killed on Monday during a visit to the community.

He said, “The incident happened on Monday morning while he was on a visit. Those men attacked him at the market square and shot him dead. He was married with two children and his wife was pregnant.

“After he was killed on Monday, those gunmen shot two people dead on Tuesday. On Wednesday, another man in the community was killed. On Thursday, a taxi driver was waylaid and shot dead. A total of nine people were killed last week.

“As I speak to you, there is no school, market or church in the community that is functioning. Everybody has deserted the place. I have also run away.”

The Government Liaison Officer of the council, Oluchi Odita, confirmed the attacks, but said he could not tell the number of victims.

Odita appealed for the intervention of the state and federal governments, saying the situation had got out of control.

“It is the youths who are killing one another. We have been trying to mediate without any success. Help us use your medium to beg the government to come to our rescue. People are running away from the commnity,” he added.

An indigene of the council, Emeka Ononomadu, said the situation was caused by the imposition of traditional rulers on the community by the government.

He said, “That place has been reduced to a war zone by cult members due to the deposit of oil in the community. And the problem started when the state government decided to encroach into the traditional selection process. Some groups, who did not want to be ruled by leaders imposed by the government, kicked and started fomenting trouble. This developed into a full-blown war among communities, led by cult groups.”

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, Taiwo Lakanu, said the command was working with the military to end the crisis in the community.

Lakanu, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the police were faced with the challenge of a difficult terrain and the reluctance of residents to give information.

He said, “We heard that some people were killed, but the situation is not as terrible as that. Two cults are involved in the crisis in that community and the problem has been on for about three years. After killing each other, they would retreat into the creeks. The terrain is difficult and because the families of the victims don’t also cooperate with the police in the area of information, it becomes difficult to make arrests.

“We have, however, met with the military and the representatives of the government to improve security in the community. We have also deployed two units of riot policemen in the area and soldiers are making efforts to send in troops as well. We are trying to recruit those who will give information that will aid our investigations.”

The Imo State Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, promised to call back after making enquiries on the incident.

“I don’t have that information, so I can’t speak on it. But there has been a crisis in that area over oil. I don’t know whether this oil is a blessing or a curse. Some of the attacks are senseless. Sometimes, those youths would allege that their community leaders collected money from the oil companies and they would attack them. I don’t know whether to tell God to dry up the supply of oil in the community,” he added.

Politics / Worries Over Governor Okorocha’s Mental State- Newsexpress by onomefm(f): 7:58pm On Aug 22, 2016
Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, will seek medical attention in India, multiple sources at the Imo State Government House, Owerri, told News Express over the weekend.

News Express had on Saturday night reported worries over Governor Okorocha’s mental state after he reportedly acted strange in his expansive office on Friday. His Spokesman Sam Onwuemeodo failed to clear the air when contacted by News Express.

The reports had it that Governor Okorocha at some point on Friday started running round his office, screaming repeatedly, “Who brought this woman here?” when there was obviously no woman in the his office.

“Take this woman out of my office! Who brought her here? What is this woman doing in my office?” Okorocha reportedly screamed, according to a source close to his office.

The source quoted one of the aides attached to the Governor as telling him, “Your Excellency, there is no woman here. I cannot find any woman here.

Various Government House sources later told News Express that Okorocha had accepted to proceed to India for medical attention. “He travelled out on Saturday night,” one of the sources said. News Express was unable to confirm the information as at the time of publication.

Governor Okorocha has been in the eye of the storm for several months. He is currently being battled by organised labour and by Owerri indigenes. While he provoked workers by cutting office days to three per week and decreeing that Thursday and Friday should be spent on the farm, he has, at the same time, been accused by Owerri indigenes of being desperate to erase their cultural heritage – a situation which they have vowed to fight with the last drop of their blood

The Governor of Imo State, Owele Rochas Okorocha who made an unscheduled trip to Europe a few days ago on a on a business trip according to the press has been reportedly in a quagmired condition as the said business trip "trans-gbanwed" to medical trip.

Reports reaching Eastern Radio from a reliable source in Europe has it that the said state chief executive, had been moved from Europ to India over a serious health challenge suspected to be Schizophrenia. The sickness was confirmed when the Governor began to claim he encountered a ghost in his Office.

According to our source in Government house, Governor Okorocha suddenly started shouting in his office... "who brought this woman here?".When his aids rushed into the office they saw absolutely nobody with the number one man in the state. Out of curiosity they asked the Governor what the problem was and which woman he was referring to but he was still shouting... "I said who brought this woman here?"

Another reliably informed Eastern Radio that the disappearance of the ghost said to be carrying a little baby, and an exchange that occurred between the Governor and the Ghost woman made the Governor to start shouting. ..”who brought this woman here” … raising an alarm and immediately the woman was said to have disappeared. The governor’s close aides immediately arranged for abroad treatment of the Chief executive, covering it with business engagements.

Meanwhile, Information from diaspora suggest that the situation is getting worst and the Governor has been moved to India where he is receiving medical attention through unorthodox means
