Pistotita: Open Field cucumber Sales Highest Price now = N5,000 per 40 - 42kg bag. Previously sold in 35kg bags. This is around N125 per bag. This period is the highest sales peak, though can rise to N7000 or more if scarce but I doubt it since everyone is rushing into it. Most farmers achieve around 2kg fruits per plants. Murano, Tokyo, Darina, Cu999, Greengo, etc. Including those RZ seeds too.
Greenhouse Cucumber Lowest price = N200 per kg, a bag = N8,000 minimum. This is a terrible price. Woeful. It's average price is N400 - N600 per kg. So that the same bag is N16,000 to N24,000. I usually sell around this range. There are minis, Dutch, Japanese, Beit Alpha, etc. Harvest can last 4 or more months. A plant can produce up to 40 - 65 cucumbers of some varieties. Can you see the huge difference? These are highly prolific cultivars. 1,000 plants inside greenhouse which give average of 7kg (just ok but not that superb) will give you N2.8 million naira sales. in 3 months.
Questions: How much did you use to set up the greenhouse? How many workers are needed to maintain it? How much do you pay workers as salary?
Compare with open field farmers cultivate 10,000 plants and still get less than 300 bags with 3 to 5 workers working like German machines. Cost of input = times 10 lesser than open field. But like 5 - 10 times more than yield with around 1/8 - 1/4 of open field planting area.
If you carry out your research accurately, there is no way you will not see the huge difference. When I say the ones shouting up there have interior motives, trust me, I know what I am saying. And if you have been making researches and cannot see this, then, I don't know how to help you.
Nairaland farmers always shout greenhouse is not profitable. Why? They always use Roma Tomato to make sales forecast. Must they cultivate Roma Tomato in greenhouse? Instead of them to go out and make thorough market research, they are here shouting when many are cashing easy money. Oga, go out and make real market research. No one brought it from heaven. If I see you put in effort, I will assist you.
You will be shocked the kind of "German machine" some of these Shoprite agents will pull to your farm when you are in the click. They are extremely rich. Obviously you cannot gain direct access to Shoprite, but perhaps to other stores. Have you tried going to the stores yourself? Yet you are just asking questions here. Have you really seen people open up here on nairaland? Go read my thread and get more facts and better approach to get it done. Maybe I am the only one bursting greenhouse secrets, yet some "olodos" (like how yoruba call them) are showing highest fo.olish.ness here
And there are crops you can still sell without shoprite. Go out and make thorough research. 10 of my friends are regular cherry tomato growers. 1 kg is over N1,000. There are special peppers which are around N1,500 per kg during wet season, and can be around N400 to N600 during dry season if you have a very good agent or source of selling your product.
Cold loving plants are extremely expensive. Get all those high crops first, and then you know what you can produce. You are taking the road to failure by going to copy someone else. There are many failures out there. Those who went to meet consultants. Lol. They just bought those useless structures. And I don't attend to new comers because they also start talking about bamboos, mosquito nets, etc. Why will they not fail? If you can get a good bamboo craft man, fine. But they always build potential rocks which collapse on farmers' heads. And when you hear the construction charges, one begins to wonder if people are really alright. Some even go to China to import nets. I told some people about the kind of net to use, and the price. They quickly went to China to get similar product. And one was my close friend. I am not sure if I have written the story here. He even "dashed" it to my face that I hyped the price. I just said OK. Fast forward 13 months later, his wife phoned me how sick he was. After battling with him, doctors said exposure to radio active rays is affecting him. I rushed to his farm to get sample of the net for test. Viola! He got cancer net from China. Since that day, I stopped telling people about my new discoveries. China is a real curse in many ways to Africa.
The main issue is: can you produce consistently? Why do you need to understudy anyone? No one will allow you. Perhaps a worker might because he needs the money. But if the owner is aware of such, the worker is gone. Only an owner who wants to sell products or services has such time and will take the huge risk. Are you not scared of going to a stranger in this present day Nigeria yourself?
Greenhouse business is extremely profitable. Work on this info you have here again. Learn to make market research. With it, you don't need to come and ask anyone here. You will see it clearly if profitable or not. If you understand what market research is, and you can carry it out yourself, you will be embarrassed that you pushed this topic out. And you will definitely laughed at yourself later, but it's all part of the learning process. Infact, you will definitely hit yourself in the head asking people what is profitable, and what is not. You have the tool to use. It's called market research. Use it. There is no way you will carry it out and not see how highly profitable greenhouse is. It is not Roma Tomato you cultivate in it. And nairaland experts are fond of using Mile 12 basket market to analyse it. Those in greenhouse business always laugh at them. I know you can do it if you really want to set it up. Return here to say I am a liar after your research.
You do not need to open your market here or open your research here if you don't want to do it all over again because boys are not smiling. They will hijack your effort. It's not a huge market share. So, get your share from the market, and try to be consistent with it. If you get one honest agent who takes N600 per kg of cukes from you, and you let people you don't trust know him, they will make him tell you that the price is N150 to N200. It's why everyone in the business always are wary of new comers. There are some people who I have introduced to agents, they started telling the agents they can supply at very cheap prices, and that the agents don't need to get anything from me again. The agents phoned me that who are the betrayers I sent to them. I was shocked. Since the time, I don't assist unless I know the person very well. The agents know that consistency is what matters. And that's why they stick around me. I have direct access to many stores too. I got all through market research.
Therefore, I don't understand the noise about no clear path in the business. It's the best. Very profitable. Highly profitable. Extremely profitable. I can introduce anyone who is trust worthy.
Good luck sir! Wow. You just give a good explanation for me and I get you more clearly now. Honestly, what limited me after doing my market research at shopping malls was the lack of knowledge of the operational cost of greenhouse. This is what I really want to know. The cost of running the greenhouse itself. Like I told you, I even bought an acre of land for greenhouse, I really want to do it, and I am still making the research. |

I really appreciate our comments so far. I learnt more. Pistotita, thanks for your analysis and recommendations. I did my research before now and what I came up with is that prices of final products from greenhouse may not be able to compete in the common market. However, what I want to understudy is the operations of greenhouse. There is no where I could do such research except I get real greenhouse. The only place I was hoping to understudy got shutdown early this year. Can anyone help? Please, I am a farmer, experienced in open field farming. Presently managing 3 acres of plantain and with 6 other acres undeveloped, all are my own. I want to go into full time farming, that's why I am asking all these. |
Agriculture › Re: Is Greenhouse Farming Profitable? by opelyem(op): 8:42pm On Aug 22, 2019 |
Pistotita: You really need to behave maturely online. Also, learn the etiquette of online forums.
The only reason those were abandoned was because they were first generation greenhouses imported by inexperienced consultants. What you need to do is to research why they were abandoned. There are reasons behind it, and I am not ready to go into the details, and start giving people who want to spend N10,000 on one acre heart attack. Go do your findings properly sir.
What you don't know, you don't know. You are not a supplier of any grocery store. I am not arguing that you are not in the chain, but you are definitely operating at the bottom of the chain. The person you talked about isn't a producer. He is likely a marketer. And even a marketer of a 4 bedroom apartment along Bourdillon down to Gerrade in Ikoyi may beg you for a job. Is the marketer the owner of the apartment? Stop misleading people. It is absolutely wrong. Stop it.
The operational cost is the lowest of all crop farming. It is very low. Extremely low bro. However, the initial cost is the only issue.
Brother, let me give you a clue: Most ignorant people go for Roma Tomato. Infact, how many people know any other tomato apart from plum and Roma in Nigeria? When eating salad, it Roma. Juice is Roma. Even as snacks, its roma. And it must be red. Must tomato be only red? And I just laugh many times. So, you need to get your marketing set. Without marketing research, entrepreneurs are failure. Bro, must it only be tomato? Nairaland always equate greenhouse to be tomato farming. It's just a pity.
You don't expect me to come online and start "disecting" the details of the business here. Of course not. Even far away in the north where there aren't many of the so called Shoprite and co, there are more greenhouses.
Our population is over 100 million, and in Lagos and Abuja alone...... are you kidding me?
Before you start, go out and make a serious market research. How can you get a good advice from a forum where over 99% Agric section users are trying to use N10,000 to cultivate 1 acre. Where they are messing up their health and risking their lives just to cut down cost. And also, they keep on attacking anyone who tries to show them the way. Even I know 3 good people who they attacked. One is on Instragram making exploits and people are patronizing him selling his organic products.
Do you need to sell to shoprite before making good money, nope. Capital NO. Everyone I have talked to are c.razi.ly maa.d" that they were ignorant of the potentials in greenhouse is so huge.
Two assignments for you:
1. Find out the reason those greenhouses were abandoned. You will notice that about 75% is a particular brand, and the shape and structure are almost same.
2. Get your market research going. You will be amazed what you will unravel.
Finally, do not go for cheap covers, especially those ones from China. Hmmmm! Everyone is an importer these days. Biam...they read online, or get hint, they rush to buy from aliexpress or ...baba. Greenhouse is about radiation these days. And I am not talking about those extremely expensive ...."nated" covers paraded as the best these days. Make your research well, buy the right product. I don't also want to mention any product or give any clue here cos I don't want to arm importers with the knowledge to import cancer radiation covers and net. Over 98% products from China will destroy the health of users. I give them just 12 months, and the damages have been initiated.
This is all I have to say here.
Goodluck bro.
Note:
1. I am not a consultant, I am a farmer. I don't take money for consulting. You can ask here if I have been to the farm of all the people asking me to consult for them. Never. When I can make money on my 1 to 6 plots. Hmmm...Why will I turn myself to a nu.isan.ce consulting around for people who cannot even set up well and pay their staff regularly? Greenhouse farming is profitable.
2. Not everyone who sells greenhouses or disposes them is a broke a.ss. Personally, I love galvanised frame. I can pack it anytime. Go read my thread, and you will understand the reason I am on break now. I sold 5 structures at extremely cheap prices to to fund myself. And I'm telling you, 1 kobo did not enter my hand as income for approximately 10 months. It was recently that some income rolled in because I decided to go against my doctor's advice. lol. But the guy said it's ok when he learned about it. I had to sell my structures to keep life going. And people who had been scratching their heads after talking to me and couldn't set up even after 14 months rushed them. lol. Thank you very much sir/ma for the exposition. Sorry about your health. Please do you have a greenhouse farm I can understudy? I do not mind paying. |

dgitrader: Op, be very very careful! It's glamorous but not profitable, don't let anybody deceive you. The best and easiest region for greenhouse farming in Nigeria is jos, come and see abandoned green houses littered everywhere. Save Ur hard earned money or look for another fanciful farming system. 99% of the greenhouse consultants that will contact you are experienced "failed" greenhouse farmers. Its no fault of theirs, the market for greenhouse produce is so volatile and laid with heartbreaking breach of contracts. Forget about all those shoprite baits. I am involved in the chain of distribution. Save ur money Thank you sir. I thought maybe the operational cost of greenhouse farming is way to high to compete in the market. Please I will appreciate more opinions. |

I am so much interested in this farming system. I even got an acre of land for this purpose. However, when I travel around the country, I see a lot of abandoned greenhouses. Of recent, I saw another one that was really functional being closed down. Please, is it because it is not profitable? I need contributions from expert please. The other time I found a supplier of greenhouse materials, he was begging me for a job, saying I am a big man. This has been delaying me from going into farming. |

fluentinfor: I met a smart young lady recently. She listened to wise counsel and she was lucky to get used drip for a very good bargain. Good farmers replace their drip every 2 years.
From interaction with lovers of Agric, most people who have set up their minds on rainy season vegetable farming do not always make it. Even they make profit during a season, they will still return to their mentality of relying on rain.
I mean, no one should even be thinking of relying on rain at this time of ours. Technology has gone too far. Weather has changed too.
During rainy season, you can cultivate watermelon. Do not ever try cucumber because if there is a sudden rain break, all your flowers will get aborted and your fruits will start folding (curved cucumbers). For watermelon, you risk facing glut in the market because over 90% farmers in SW, SS and SE rely on rain. And funny, hausa farmers understand the game too. They do not try to compete with other regions at this time.
Tomato is the main crop one should try to set the harvest period to rainy season, this is if you can irrigate it during dry season. If you enough time to spend on farm and irrigate by yourself, one plot is enough. You can get soda bottles and turn them to drip. If it is just one plot you can do and push it to rainy season, you will have huge profit. The question is that can you really do it? If hausas run away from rainy season tomato, can you step up the game?
If it is just drip irrigation you can buy now, go for it and keep. Many farmers purchase theirs 12 months before using them. Buy now, keep them, make profit with them later when you can afford a good borehole, pump or whatsoever water source installation you need to do. Thank you very much for taking your time to explain this. |
Agriculture › Re: My New Cucumber Farm by opelyem(m): 11:32am On Jan 15, 2018 |
fluentinfor: Very interesting. I was reluctant to make any comment but maybe my suggestions will help you.
You spend N30,000 on seeds, if hybrid, it should be around 150 grams and you really should not expect more than 85% germination rate with the seeds around. Or did you think you are getting 100% germination rate? Gone are the days I used to get over 95%. Such are the seeds we have now.
Yes, crickets eat cucumber seeds during this period. I really do not know what option you have if you are doing organic but if inorganic, Dimethoate 40 % EC will help you. Spray every evening and morning till seeds germinates. After germination, use common sense in spraying as they can still eat young seedlings. 2 weeks duration is too long. You may alternate with another active systemic ingredient. Honestly, you need very strong pesticides to survive the first 10 days Afterwards, reduce spraying chemical drastically but do not leave out Imidaclorid so you can combat thrips, aphids and Whitefies. Also, get your fungicides ready.
I am not scaring you but how on earth do you think you can manage using hose only to irrigate your cucumber well. Honestly, I am still shocked many still want to farm like our olden grandparents. Did they have succesful agricultural system? If they do not, how do you think you will be succesful using their style. The first equipment you suppose to buy even before seed is your drip irrigation. I do not know why most users here think using hose is wise. Anyway, I do no know how you will perform with this style of irrigation. Honestly. You may be tough to scale through but as for me, I do not farm to land myself in any hospital. I have never used my profit to treat myself afterward. Let us be smart.
Ok, you need to irrigate morning and evening, and it may take hours, look at your plant spacing. It means you are going to stake. Hahahhaa. You will stake and irrigate manually. Bro, I cannot just but pity what is going to happen there. After staking one 50g can seed , you will hear it. Hope you have paracetamol. And if you had to pay for making your beds, it means you do not have full time workers. No full time workers for staked cucumbers? Bro, you are also going to prune.
Anyway, I think you should get one or two full time workers fast. You can still make it. Next time, farm with drip irrigation. I repeat, get your drip. It is not even too late, if you have cash with you, quickly get your drip irrigation.
I wish you the best. This analysis just weak me. I was planning to plant 2 plots of cucumber this coming raining season but it is like I have to drop the idea. |
