Career / 5 Things You Should Drop From Your Life Now by Opetech(m): 7:05am On Jul 24, 2015
There are some things we engage in that often draw us back or prevent us from achieving set goals. The earlier these actions which slow us down in the journey of life are done away with, the better for us.

Life expectancy is short (even shorter in Nigeria), to go through it with excess baggage. Ever wondered why athletes put on light and tight-fitting sportswear? It's because they need to be as light as possible. Man is said to have an average life span of 70 years. The first 20 years (usually 30 in Nigeria) is spent in the walls of the classroom, making mistakes and trying to prepare for the next three decades. The last 10 years is spent winding down. So a Nigerian has an average of 30 years to make meaningful impacts in all ramifications. These period is meant to be enjoyed and gratifying.

So, here are 5 'things' you should as a matter of urgency drop from your life.

1. Negative people around you

Negative and pessimistic people are energy drainers. They don't see anything positive about life. Their thoughts, words, actions and expectations are most times towards negativity, probably due to their unpleasant experiences or how they were brought up. Instead of spending time with such people, focus on the positive people instead. There is no reason to continue to be friends with people who make you feel bad about yourself every time. Now is the time to trash negative-minded people around you.

2. Trying to please everyone

Ever heard of the saying "bad food is made by chefs who are indifferent or who are trying to be everything to everybody?" Are you men-pleaser? I realised late that it isn't possible to please everyone that I come across in life. As someone who has been opportune to lead various youth gatherings, the more I tried to please everyone, the more I upset everyone. I never wanted to get on people's nerves and so found myself displeasing myself to please others. As much as you should be a good person, don't trade your happiness in trying to be on everyone's good records, you only loose in both ways.

3. Saying "Yes" all the time

When saying "Yes" incoviniences your life, say "No" instead. Will you still utter yes if it puts your life on the line. I remembered the song I was taught early in life, don't say yes when you mean to say no".

4. The past

No matter how much you sob and dwell on the past, you can't change it. The lessons can however be valuable as you progress in life. You can make amends, apologize for past wrong doings, the past however remains the past. To avoid been drained emotionally, leave the past where it belongs, which is in the past. The time spent regretting past deeds can be channelled towards productive ventures.

5. Worrying about the future

Perhaps you haven't come across that portion of the holy book which says "which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his life span?" I used to be a worry champion, not until I realised it solves no problem, rather, it aggravates it. I worry about everything, even bizarre things. Imagine worrying about the school my unborn kids will attend. Spend time today preparing for the future. Remember, there is no prize nor crown for a worry champion.

Above are the baggage you need to trash from your life to live a fulfilled life.

NYSC / My NYSC Year In Retrospect by Opetech(m): 8:55pm On Jul 22, 2015
When my NYSC call up letter mandated me to report at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Old Macgregor college, Afikpo North L.G.A of Ebonyi, state, it was like pouring a chilled bucket of water on me. This was because I had my service year planned out. I was absolutely sure of serving in a Southwestern state, together with my friend who was later catapulted to Benue.

And so, on the 4th of August, 2014, I embarked on a long distance journey by road. For the first time in my over twenty years of birth, I crossed the Niger bridge. I marvelled at the architecture while speaking to myself, "this is the bridge I read about in my primary school days." We soon got to Anambra, South East's commercial nerve center. I grew more impatient, it's been over 7 hours since my bottom has been glued to the sit, to worsen the matter, I sat at the rear.

10 hours after we left Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, we arrived at the orientation camp. The 3 weeks orientation course was the most rigorous exercise I've ever encountered. Worsening the situation was camping during the rainy season, I'm allergic to cold. It was however fun towards the end.

I met different categories of graduates. Those who wrote 'single' for relationship with next of kin, or one contestant for Miss NYSC who gave the full meaning of A.T.M as 'Any Time Money,' (probably because her boyfriend gives her money anytime she ask him), a boy and girl caught having carnal knowledge of each other at odd hour on the parade ground. How would I forget in a hurry, those girls that fought and tore their 'white on white' over a guy they met barely two and half weeks ago.

As for the scheme, how I'm supposed to master fish, snail and rabbit rearing within 3 days is a question still left unanswered.

I was posted to a private school in the state capital for my primary assignment. I taught Chemistry for a whole year without showing the students a test tube, the school had no laboratory. As 'old' as I was, the students felt I was too young to be a graduate. Really? I said to myself, "these people never sheee something."

The best moment of my service year was the opportunity to serve my country beyond the classroom. As a Presiding Officer at the 2015 general elections, it feels so great to be escorted to polling units by security agents with election materials and escorted to the collation centre with the result sheet.

The people of the East are not bad as being portrayed. Yes! you read that.  Throughout my service year, I lived in an apartment paid for by the church, free of charge and whole lot of interesting experience that space would not permit me to pen down.

The service year further affirmed what I've always believed that irrespective of tribe or religion, there are only two kinds of people, the good and the bad.

Lest I forget, returned to the Pace-Setter State not just with my Certificate of National Service, I'm also a trained and certified photographer. So don't hesitate to call on me for your events photography service at any time.

Serving in Ebonyi was great, I hope to be back to the salt of the nation in the near future.

Finally, I have served my fatherland, it is time for Nigeria to serve me.

Politics / Why We Can’t Proceed With Election –jega by Opetech(m): 6:08pm On Feb 07, 2015
The Chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, has concluded
a briefing meeting with 25 civil society groups in
Abuja Saturday informing them that all security
agencies in the country have indicated to him, in
writing, that they are not available to support the
elections planned for February 14

Mr. Jega who had an earlier meeting with political
parties is rounding up another meeting with his 36
resident commissioners now on what will amount
to an INEC position on whether to postpone or go
ahead with the elections.

Insiders at the meeting said “its pretty much a
done deal at this point that the lections will be
postponed” and many of the attendees told
PREMIUM TIMES they were shell-shocked and
depressed at what they characterize as “a clear case
of political blackmail of the state against civil
society.”

Jibrin Ibrahim, a leading African election expert
and senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and
Development, CDD, in Abuja, who was at the
meeting, said Mr. Jega told the meeting that
security operatives from all the agencies told INEC
that they were commencing a six weeks special
operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the
north eastern corridors of the country and would
rather not be distracted by the elections.
Mr. Jega announced that the security forces also
said the operations are due to commence on
February 14, the date INEC had planned for the
presidential and other federal elections.
This decision, by the security forces, successfully
renders INEC’s hitherto insistence to go ahead with
the elections a risky venture.

To even collect ballot papers from their storage in
the Central bank for the elections will still require
security escort, which apparently is now
unavailable in the light of the move by the security
forces.

Career / What Are Your Aspirations For The New Year? by Opetech(m): 8:50pm On Jan 17, 2015
The year 2014 has come and gone, however not without its ups and down. I must however congratulate you for making it this far. Despite how rough and tough the year was, you are able to witness the year 2015. It is an opportunity to try again. What are those things you wished you had done in the last year? Or better still wished you had done better? 2015 is offering you a chance to achieve your dreams and indeed it is possible with the right attitude.

Therefore as you journey through another 365 days, what are your hopes, aspirations and plans for the year?  I am not talking about the “normal” New Year resolutions that we often forget before the first quarter of the year runs out. I am concerned about your concrete plans for the 15th year of the 21st century.

Have you made any realistic plans and goals to run with? Or you just want to live each day of the year as it comes? One of the holy books says “write the vision, make it plain so that he that reads can run with it.”

You cannot afford to live your life on trial and error. What are your short and long term goals? Are they realistic? Can you run with such a vision? Will it make you a better person than you were in the last year? Will you be able to look at the end of 2015 and say “I couldn’t have done better?” These are the questions you should ask answer yourself sincerely.

If you haven’t plan for the year, it is never too late to do so.

Pick a pen and paper to do this.

Write out five (5) goals and aspirations under each of the following; health, education, relationship and career.

For instance, under health, have a plan to eat balanced diet and to seek prompt medical intervention in case of any sickness.

On education, you can plan and save towards getting that higher degree you had always wanted to pursue. You can also decide to take an online course to improve your knowledge (I’m currently taking one and I must confess, I’m learning a whole lot).

Improve your relationship with your family, friends and relatives by giving them more time than in the last year.  Also, make a decision to travel this year with people of like minds. You don’t have any business with people travelling in opposite direction to yours.

Acquire more knowledge in your field by attending conferences and seminars to improve your career. Career change is not impossible.

Make a decision to be closer to your God more this year, this entail first knowing the God you serve.

The above are just guidlines to help you make your own plans for the year 2015. As you make these plans, make provision for review after every 3 months, access how far you’ve ben able to stay put to your goals after every quarter. You can’t do this diligently and remain the same at the end of the year.

So, what are you waiting for? Time waits for no man friend. Make goals and start doing and before you realize it, a new you is the result. Have an unlimited year, go break forth.

Career / What Do You Have? by Opetech(m): 6:48pm On Oct 09, 2014
One of the greatest problems we experience is the inability to appreciate and capitalise on the resources available to us. Many a time, we focus on our current incapabilities thus blocking our vision of our abilities, so we sink in the muddy clay of “I can’t” rather than soar on the sturdy wings of “I CAN”.

Take yourself as an example, yes you! You do not have a master’s degree, you lack work experience as you did not even embark on the customary industrial training, you are not very good with speaking even though you’d love to and since these are major requirements needed in the companies you’ve applied to, a feeling of dejection sets in. Am sorry dear and I empathise with you.

One question I have for you however is: what do you have ?

The reality is that more often than not, we neglect what we have in pursuit of what we don’t, we therefore create a series of wrinkles in our otherwise neatly ironed self-confidence. We sit with deflated believe in our self.

The founder of Coca-Cola, John Pemberton was a pharmacist who saw potential in the concoction he had and today, it is a global brand.

Adi-dasler saw potential in sport and his ability to make shoes thus converting waste from the war into material for shoes, today we all know addidas!

How about the popular Kentucky fried chicken (KFC)? Just a personal love for cooking and for making chicken using his own concocted mixture and development over the years!

So I ask again, what do you have? Oh, your response is different? You know what you have but so many people can do it too! Good! Why do it the way they did theirs? Ever heard of the word innovation before? You probably own a Techno phone now, but I remember you few years ago saying it was a “China phone” and can never use it. What changed? Simple! They developed!

So, quit whining!
· List out the things you know you can do.
· How can you make them unique to you?
· How can you make it of financial gain?
· What’s the local, national and international relevance?

“Little” skills like cooking, sewing, plaiting, drawing, speaking, making
people laugh, technical know-how, designing, modelling and others are great tools in the hand of those who recognise them.

Start small, but always think big and sell your abilities. You are far greater than you think. I’ll definitely see you at the top.

“Once you can write an alphabet, you can write a book of 100 million pages. It’s just a matter of believing it as possible and taking the cross millimetre by millimetre”- Isrealmore Ayivor

KillerBeauty: It is chiefly through books that we enjoy intercourse with superior minds. In the best books, great men and women talk to us, give us their most precious thought, and pour their souls into ours. God be thanked for books. They are the voices of the distant and the dead, and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages. Books are true levelers. They give to all who faithfully use them, the society, the spiritual presence, of the best and greatest of our race.

-William Ellery Channing

You are very right, with books, there is no limit to what you can know. With books, you can have the best adventures you ever wished for.
Career / 4 Reasons You Should Read A Book Today by Opetech(m): 2:02pm On Oct 01, 2014
The importance of learning to human race cannot be quantified. Of the two basic means by which humans can gain
knowledge, which include experience and book, the latter is within the reach of both the old and the young.

Today, books are available in various formats including PDF,
docx, pub and audio formats.

In ascertaining how great a man will be in life, the people with
which he associates and the books he reads are great
determining factors.

Taking a cue from the life of Bray Bradbury, early in life, I
learnt that self education is the best and that great lessons of
life are never taught in the four walls of the classroom.
Besides, anyone can educate him or herself almost for free.

" Libraries raised me. I don't believe in colleges and
universities. I believe in libraries because most students don't
have any money. When I graduated from high school, it was
during the depression and we had no money. I couldn't go to
college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10
years." -Bray Bradbury

Bradbury wrote a thousand stories in return. He was one of
the most celebrated 20th-century American writers.

If you are one of those who are yet to cultivate the habit of
reading, here are some reasons why you should drop what you
are doing and pick up a book today .

1. Books widen your horizon
Books are effective tools to boost knowledge especially in
areas other than your primary field. During my undergraduate
days, two of the three General Studies Courses I offered were
African Culture & Civilization and Philosophy & Logic. I didn't
read these courses just because I wanted to pass
examinations, I studied to gain knowledge. I wanted to
acquire information in areas different from my discipline and
therefore read each book three times.

I did not only get an 'A' in both courses, I was equipped with
the understanding of African culture, how Africa was painted
before the advent of colonialism and the subsequent
civilization that has taken place. I also learned how logic
works and when my argument is flawed.

If you want to travel the length and breadth of the world,
learn culture of different tribes and a new language, all these
without spending a fortune, read books.

2. Can land you your 'dream' job
Books contains treasures that youths especially should learn
to uncover. In this age, employers of labour look out for
exceptional candidates who will add value to their
organization. Candidates who can distinguish themselves from
others through the self education they've equipped themselves
with.

Top on the list of job requirements by Human Resource
professionals is excellent communication skill. These and
other skills can be sharpened through good reading habits.

Job interview sessions are greater percentage of the time far
from what you read in college. They are intelligent quotient
questions acquired from lifelong self learning. HRs recognize
intelligent candidates when they come across them

3. Boosts your self Esteem
Equipped with knowledge in diverse fields and polished
communication skill gives you confidence to speak to anyone
irrespective of the person's position. This boosts your self
confidence which in turn raises your self esteem. A feeling of
boldness and courage naturally engulfs you. The secret is not
to read just books that everyone is reading, if you do, you can
only think what everyone else is thinking.

4. Leaders are Readers
One of the secrets of every great leader is that they are all
prolific readers. Abraham Lincoln had only one year of formal
education, yet he attributed his success to his reading
appetite. Rick Warren, author of 'The purpose driven life', read
a book each day for greater part of his life.

Thomas Jefferson, who doubles as the principal author of the
declaration of independence and the third president of the
United States donated what could be regarded as one of the
most exhaustive personal libraries of his time to the library of
Congress.
