Business To BusinessChina Government Issues New Warning On Cryptocurrencies by OptimistSky(op): 2:33am On Nov 17, 2021
The Chinese Government issued a new warning. The government this time has warned state-owned enterprises not to engage in cryptocurrency mining. According to BNN Bloomberg, the authorities threatened to impose more aggressive measures on companies involved in the Bitcoin (BTC) mining business.

A meeting was held last week to reinforce their latest announcement to ban cryptocurrency-related activities in the Asian country. However, Meng Wei, spokesperson for the nation’s economic planning chief, clarified that the measure extends to private companies as well.

Likewise, China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection recently expelled Xiao Yi, a former official in Jiangxi province, for various infractions such as supporting digital asset mining. The official was accused of abusing his power to engage in these activities that the Chinese government now considers “illegal activities.”

China has again cracked down on bitcoin miners this year, blaming them for the chaos in the energy sector as the government struggles to meet its carbon-neutral targets in the medium term.

Concerns about the country’s energy supply for the upcoming winter season were one of the reasons for the intensification of the crackdown on miners in September.

Chinese government officials have persecuted those who try to disguise themselves as data researchers and storage facilities to stay in the cryptocurrency business.

Meanwhile, a study by the UK’s Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance revealed that the United States is now a very strong country in the Bitcoin (BTC) mining industry, outperforming China. According to Reuters, the figures are not surprising, considering the recent Chinese government crackdown on the cryptocurrency sector.

The study confirms that miners are shifting their business to North America, as the United States accounted for 35.4% of the global production rate at the end of August, followed by Kazakhstan and Russia.

The next country in the ranking is Canada with 9.55%, followed by Ireland with 4.68%, Malaysia with 4.59%, Germany with 4.48% global hash share, Iran with 3, 11%, and Norway with 0.58%. However, the study highlighted that countries like Germany and Ireland are included in the list because miners often rely on the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).

BusinessCryptocurrency: Ethereum Hits ATH And SHIB Becomes Top 10 Token by OptimistSky(op): 5:02am On Oct 31, 2021
Cryptocurrency never fails to disappoint fans of volatility. This week, Bitcoin and Ethereum reached prices never seen before, then promptly pulled back while prices of altcoins like SHIB soared.

Ethereum (ETH) recorded a new all-time high on Friday. Transactions came so thick and fast that the network burned more tokens than it minted, thanks in part to solid performances and activity in Shiba Inu (SHIB). At the recorded all-time high of $4,416 on CoinGecko, ETH is up about 45% in the past month. Bitcoin is up 40% in the past month.

On Wednesday morning, the top two coins took a turn for the worse. Bitcoin experienced a sudden pullback in its price, dropping 4.3 % from $60,825 to $58,208, and Ethereum opened with $4,132 and closed with $3,930 on the same day.

Although such price swings are common in volatile crypto markets, downturns present buying opportunities for seasoned institutional and retail investors, and for El Salvador, its government.  On Wednesday, President Bukele tweeted that the nation "bought the dip," adding another 420 Bitcoin ($25.6 million) to the country’s national reserves.

Reuters estimates that El Salvador now holds 1,120 Bitcoin. Bukele tweeted that the company has a trust that is funded by both USD and Bitcoin. When Bitcoin rises in value, “we are able to withdraw some USD and leave the trust with the same total,” he tweeted.

Aside from Bitcoin and Ethereum, the crypto market gave way to memes this week. The platform behind the self-proclaimed Dogecoin killer, Shiba Inu, continued its surge through CoinMarketCap's rankings to gain a top ten position.

The altcoin rallied a staggering 800% over the past month, hitting a record high of $0.00007 on Wednesday. According to Defi Llama, the total value locked in ShibaSwap, a decentralized exchange that allows users to stake SHIB, has doubled to $512 million this month.

With a market capitalization valued at an estimated $40 billion, the meme coin has grown larger than international conglomerates and firms like TD Ameritrade, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Kelloggs. That said, SHIB’s rise to the top is not a reflection of success in trading, seafaring holidays or cereals, but in memes.

Amid the price rises, the so-called “Shib Army” has lobbied for Robinhood to list the coin. A petition on change.org has more than 400,000 signatures, but Robinhood said that it’s not ready to list the coin just yet.

So how about that Ethereum all-time high of $4,416 on Friday? The rally followed Altair, a significant update to the Ethereum network that went live on Wednesday.

Altair is likely the final upgrade before Ethereum 2.0, which will transition the blockchain away from energy-intensive mining and toward greener proof-of-stake validation. Altair is also the first upgrade to the Ethereum Beacon Chain, the first step toward Ethereum 2.0 that launched last December.

Wednesday’s successful launch shows that a full transition to proof-of-take is possible. The upgrade also lets lower-powered devices, like mobile phones, verify transactions, and made life difficult for inactive or offline validators.

Lastly, regulation might be on the horizon. According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Treasury Department and several other agencies will release a report specifying how the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission “has significant authority over" stablecoins such as Tether, USD Coin and Binance USD.

Bloomberg said that the report's conclusions are the result of aggressive lobbying by SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who argued that his agency "has existing powers to oversee tokens when they're involved in investment transactions." It will also "reaffirm" how the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) oversees stablecoins.

Considering the growing opposition from central bankers, regulators, finance ministries, and politicians toward dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies like Diem, it’s likely that Web3 communities will learn the art of the compromise if they want to continue innovating in the United States.

PoliticsFresh Crisis Tears APC Apart In Delta And Oyo State by OptimistSky(op): 4:42am On Oct 31, 2021
Crisis has hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta and Oyo States, forcing prominent leaders in the two chapters to constitute parallel executive committees.

While the new parallel executive committee in Delta State accused the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of attempt to hijack the party, four of the seven members in the committee in Oyo State opted out of the assignment and hurriedly returned to Abuja.

Unlike the case of Delta State, a former Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Oyo State, Mr. Ajiboye Omodewu controversially emerged the Chairman of Oyo APC after the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) deferred it by a fortnight.

A new executive committee emerged in Asaba, Delta State Friday due to factional leaders ascribed to attempt to hijack the party in the state by the Deputy Senate President Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

It's revealed that the parallel executive committee emerged to pilot the party following the decision of its key leaders to distance themselves from the October 16 state congress of the APC held in Asaba.

The October 16th congress produced a former chieftain of People Democratic Party (PDP), Omeni Sobotie as the Chairman of Delta APC alongside other officers chosen by voice affirmation.

Deputy Senate President Omo-Agege, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi and founding leader of Delta APC, Olorigun O’tega Emerhor spearheaded the exercise, which further complicated crisis in the party chapter.

However, a reconciliation committee of the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun Committee initiated by the national leadership of the APC Friday announced what it termed “authentic harmonised executive members at the ward, local government and state levels to run the affairs of the party in the state.

The council said in a statement that Delta APC executive officers include a lawyer, Mr Silas Buowe as Chairman; Mr Elvis O. Ayomanor, (Deputy Chairman); and Comrade Chidi Okonji as Soon.

The statement was signed by Chairman of the Leaders’ Council and Minister of State (Labour), Chief Festus Keyamo (SAN), Dr. Alex Ideh, Co-Chairman; Dr Cairo Ojougboh, Secretary and former executive director, NDDC; 2019 APC Governorship Candidate, Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru as well as former Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei, who is currently Executive Director, NIMASA; and, Dr. (Mrs) Mariam Ali, foremost national woman leader of the APC.

Other signatories to the document are Mr George Timinimi (Leader, Ijaw Nation); Chief Richard Odibo, Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission; retired AVM Terry Okorodudu

(Leader Delta South); Dr. Eugene Okolocha (Leader, Ndokwa Nation); and, Hon. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, Leader Isoko Nation, former Isoko APC House of Representatives Candidate.

In line with the Constitution of the APC and guidelines for the 2021 congresses stipulated consensus amongst party stakeholders, the statement said: “The Delta APC Council of Leaders resolved to release a harmonised list of state executive members who shall be recognised by all APC faithful in the State and will run the affairs of the Party henceforth.”

According to the statement, came to be having met severally to consider the various and diverse interests within the party and after consulting widely with other stakeholders adding that the new state executive would work with the existing local government and ward executives already in place.

The council members hinted that they were not unaware of a few leaders who refused to join the arrangement of the council put together by the Congress and Extraordinary Conversation Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party and who decided to be part of a one-man-show.

In a veiled reference to the members of the Omo-Agege faction, the council said their positions and spaces within the Council of Leaders “are still open anytime they are done with their solo runs.”

The new executive committee is coming on the heels a blanket rejection of different congresses of the APC in Delta State held under the leadership of Senator Omo-Agege.

In Oyo State yesterday, Omodewu emerged at the congress held at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Oke Ado, Ibadan. However, some prominent members of the party chapter boycotted.

The emergence of Omodewu and other members of the state executive was sequel to a motion for the affirmation of their names moved by a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dokun Odebunmi and seconded by a former Majority Leader in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Kehinde Subair.

The congress was supervised by the Secretary of the State Congress Committee, Abdullahi Bello and had the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, major stakeholders of APC in the state boycotted the congress while calling for its suspension.

A former Senator, Senator Ayo Adeseun, while addressing journalists on behalf of other stakeholders, alleged forgery of wards and delegates lists.

Other party chieftains who felt aggrieved include Chief Adebayo Adelabu; Hon. Tolu Akande-Sadipe; Minister of Sports, Mr. Sunday Dare; Prof. Azeez Adeduntan; NCC Chairman, Prof. Adeolu Akande and former ALGON Chairman in the state, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye.

Adeseun decried the insensitive manner at which the delegates’ list was manipulated despite what was sent to Abuja by the state executive after the ward and local government congresses, noting that those behind the manipulation do not have the true interest of the party at heart.

He insisted that the list sent from Abuja for the state congress was in complete variance from what was sent from the state.

He said there “is a limit to what the party membership could condone while appealing to the national leadership of the party to take up the matter seriously and if need be limit the list of delegates from the state to the statutory number according to the party’s constitution.

“We received information that the list sent in from Abuja had been tampered with by a serving senator and a former Governor of the State. In order to safeguard the integrity of the process, we appeal to our National Chairman to suspend the state congress until all of this is sorted out as Oyo is a sensitive state.

“Oyo APC is ready to take over only if we are sincere with our hard earned democracy. The so-called state congress has been postponed. We have committed too much to the party than for anyone to make a fool of us.”

PoliticsGovernor Willie Obiano Commissions Anambra Airport As NCAA Fail To Approved by OptimistSky(op): 4:22am On Oct 31, 2021
Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Friday commissioned the Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport, Umueri, for commercial use amidst fanfare by indigenes of the state.

This came as the aviation regulatory authority, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), failed to approve the take-off of two commercial flights that were billed to land at the airport from Lagos and Abuja respectively.

Governor Obiano said: “I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for approving this Airport, also Sidika for the oversight activities he did here, and also Nuhu of NCAA.

“This airport has been certified and has met all needs for commercial purposes. Unfortunately, the flights that were fully booked for today, both from Abuja and Lagos could not come because the regulatory authorities said the commercial airlines that will operate here will need to have counters here before operations will start.

“The airlines that will operate in this airport include Air Peace, Ibom Air, Dana Air, United Nigeria Air and Anab Jets. They will have to set up their counter before flights will commence.

“The dreams we have nurtured for 30 years have come true today. We fought many battles to be here today, including COVID lockdowns. I have been assured by aviation experts that this is going to be the most viable airport in Nigeria.

BusinessEnaira Launches: What You Need To Know by OptimistSky(op): 11:40am On Oct 25, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) digital currency the eNaira, is expected to go live today with the official launch by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja. Already, the website www.enaira.com has gone live and banks have added it on their various electronic banking platforms.

The eNaira is a type of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) which over 80 per cent of central banks across the world are currently exploring. CBDC’s are new variants of central bank money that are different from physical cash and reserves/settlement accounts.

It is a digital representation of sovereign currency that’s issued by a jurisdiction’s monetary authority and a direct liability of the central bank that issued it. Contrary to some beliefs, CBDCs are not meant to replace cash and bank deposits but to coexist as additional form of Central Bank issued Money.

CBDCs are also not to be confused with cryptoassets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and the likes which are privately issued tokens based on cryptographic techniques and denominated in their own unit of account. Cryptoassets are thus fundamentally different from other kinds of digital money such as the CBDC which basically utilises technology to represent a country’s official currency in digital form.

The eNaira, while the website says the app can be downloaded, a search on Google playstore reveals that the app is yet to be loaded and scanning the quick response (QR) code takes one back to the website. Meanwhile, some commercial banks have started calling on their customers to register to get an invitation to join the eNaira community.

PoliticsBuhari Government Counters London Economist With Own Editorial by OptimistSky(op): 11:13am On Oct 25, 2021
The Economist is accurate to state that they have come to a head under President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. Yet they do so, because for so long, under previous administrations, whether military or democratic, tough decisions have been ducked, and challenges never fully met with the effect of abetting these dangers and allowing them all to fester and grow. Today, all four threats are being fought concurrently and it is only this President’s administration which has finally had the will and determination to confront them.

The Buhari administration has sought to push back terrorism which has been a threat for more than two decades since the first emergence of Boko Haram. It is only the Buhari administration that has now sought to intervene against the kidnapping and banditry that has been a simmering threat for far longer. It is only this President’s Government which has taken on IPOB, the violent terrorist group which bombs police stations and offices of security agencies, while also threatening those who break their Monday-sit-ins whilst claiming the mantle of forebears who half a century ago fought a civil war. And it is only the Buhari leadership which has sought ever, in over one hundred years to identify the root causes of the herder farmer clashes and find durable solutions.

Foreign AffairsPrime Minister Under House Arrest In Sudan by OptimistSky(op): 10:33am On Oct 25, 2021
Military forces in Sudan have detained a number of senior government figures, officials said, as leading politicians called on people to take to the streets to counter an apparent military coup.

Sudan’s information ministry said the internet had been cut off and military forces had closed bridges, while the country’s state news channel played patriotic traditional music and scenes of the Nile river.

The Umma Party, the country’s largest political party, described the arrests as an attempted coup, and called on people to take to the streets in resistance.

Earlier, the Sudanese Professionals’ Association, a group leading demands for a transition to democracy, issued a similar call.

A possible takeover by the military would be a major setback for Sudan, which has grappled with a transition to democracy since long-time autocrat Omar al-Bashir was toppled by mass protests.

Weeks of rising tensions
The arrests comes after weeks of rising tensions between Sudan’s civilian and military leaders.

A failed coup attempt in September fractured the country along old lines, pitting more conservative Islamists who want a military government against those who toppled Mr al-Bashir in mass protests.

In recent days, both camps have taken to the street in demonstrations.

The officials said the detained include industry minister Ibrahim al-Sheikh, information minister Hamza Baloul, Mohammed al-Fiky Suliman, member of the ruling Sovereign Council, and Faisal Mohammed Saleh, a media adviser to prime minister Abdalla Hamdok.

The whereabouts of Mr Hamdok are not immediately clear, amid media reports that security forces were stationed outside his home in Khartoum. Photos circulating online showed men in uniform standing in the dark, allegedly near his home.

Ayman Khalid, governor of the state containing the capital, Khartoum, was also arrested, according to the official Facebook page of his office.

Under Mr Hamdok and the transitional council, Sudan has slowly emerged from years of international pariah status under Mr al-Bashir. The country was removed from the United States’ state supporter of terror list in 2020, opening the door for badly needed international loans and investment.

The country’s economy has also struggled with the shock of a number economic reforms called for by international lending institutions.

There have been previous military coups in Sudan since it gained its independence from Britain and Egypt in 1956. Mr al-Bashir came to power in a 1989 military coup that removed the country’s last elected government.
