President-elect Donald Trump launched his own cryptocurrency on Friday, sparking a feverish buying that apparently sent its market capitalization soaring to several billion dollars.

In a message posted on his Truth Social platform and X, Trump unveiled the so-called meme coin, which is designed to capitalize on the popularity of a certain personality, movement or viral internet trend.

"My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE! It's time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING!" he wrote.

Meme coins have no economic or transactional value and are often seen as a means of speculative trading.

"This Trump Meme celebrates a leader who doesn't back down, no matter the odds," the coin's official site says.

In the hours following the overnight launch, the crypto community posed questions about the legitimacy of the $TRUMP coin, and its actual link to the president-elect, with some fearing a scam.

But the fact that the announcements came on Trump's official social media channels seemed to reassure the market, as did the fact that Trump has used one of the companies behind the project, CIC Digital LLC, in the past to sell non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

By mid-morning on Saturday, the market capitalization for $TRUMP stood at nearly $6 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.com.

David Lynch, the American filmmaker whose works include the surrealist cult classics Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, has died aged 78.

Lynch's death was announced on his official Facebook page by his family.

YouTuber Zara Dar, who quit her PhD program to join OnlyFans as an adult content creator has revealed that she has been sharing her STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) videos on adult porn video sites. A Texas man has been charged with stalking for allegedly sending WNBA star Caitlin Clark threats over social media, officials said Monday.

Michael Lewis, 55, was arrested on Sunday in Indianapolis and has been charged with stalking for allegedly sending "numerous threats and sexually explicit messages to Clark via his social media accounts," the Marion County Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

"No matter how prominent a figure you are, this case shows that online harassment can quickly escalate to actual threats of physical violence," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement.

Investigators traced the X account to Lewis and determined that recent messages to Clark were sent from an IP address at a hotel in Indianapolis, which was "especially concerning given that he is a Texas resident," the affidavit stated.

Tony Award-winning actress and singer Linda Lavin, best known for her role in TV sitcom "Alice," has died, her representative confirmed. She was 87.

Lavin died Sunday due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer, rep Michael Gagliardo said in a statement Monday to USA TODAY. She is survived by "the love of her life" Steve Bakunas, Gagliardo added.

The award-winning actress starred in the hit sitcom "Alice," which aired from 1976 to 1985. It follows working mom and aspiring singer Alice Hyatt as she raises her son and works at a diner.

Lavin had been performing since she was 5 years old, according to IMDb. In the early 1960s, she began looking for work in New Jersey and by 1969, after staring in numerous musicals and shows, she was nominated for a Tony.

The actress most recently appeared in three episodes of "No Good Deed," which premiered on Netflix Dec. 12, starring Linda Cardellini, Lisa Kudrow, O-T Fagbenle, Abbi Jacobson and more. She is set to star in two posthumous releases: the film "One Big Happy Family" premiering in January and the Hulu series "Mid-Century Modern" later in 2025.

Former US President Jimmy Carter has died aged 100, the centre he founded has confirmed.

The former peanut farmer lived longer than any president in history and celebrated his 100th birthday in October.

The Carter Center, which advocates for democracy and human rights around the world, said he died on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia.

The Democrat served as president from 1977 to 1981, a period beset by economic and diplomatic crises.

After leaving the White House with low approval ratings, his reputation was restored through humanitarian work which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Friday opened applications for recruitment of officers into various positions in its Superintendent, Inspector, and Customs Assistant cadres.

This follows a recent announcement by the NCS that it had secured approval to recruit 3,927 officers in 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance trade facilitation and support the nation’s economic recovery.

The Customs, while announcing the recruitment exercise warned Nigerians to be wary of scammers who may want to use the exercise to scam them.

“Our recruitment process is completely FREE and FAIR. We DO NOT charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process. If anyone demands payment, they are scammers,” the NCS warned.

Eligibility requirements 

According to the vacancy announcement made by the Service, the basic requirements for applicants are:

Must be a Nigerian citizen by birth.
Must have a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
Must not have any criminal record or be under investigation.

Academic requirements for the three cadres of officers vary. For the Senior (Superintendent) Cadre, the NCS said applicants must have:

Olivia Hussey Eisley, star of the 1968 film “Romeo and Juliet” and the slasher classic “Black Christmas,” has died, according to a post on her Instagram page. She was 73.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th,” the statement posted on her Instagram reads. “Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.”

“Romeo and Juliet” was the British-Argentine actress’s big break, winning her a Golden Globe for her performance as Juliet.

Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic love story was not without its controversies. In late 2022, Hussey Eisley and co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Studios, which produced the film, for allowing the movie to be released with scenes showing them nude when they were minors. According to the complaint, Zeffirelli told Hussey Eisley and Whiting – who were 15 and 16 at the time, respectively – that “they must act in the nude or the picture would fail.” The suit was dismissed in May 2023.

Greg Gumbel, the renowned CBS Sports anchor and commentator, has died at the age of 78.

His family confirmed the news in a statement on Friday, saying:

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel. He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer.  Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten.

The Old Guard was released on Netflix in 2020 to positive reviews and quickly built a passionate fanbase. Based on a comics series of the same name, the movie tells the story of a team of mercenaries blessed (or cursed) with immortality as they make their way in the world and fight evil forces that seek to exploit their power. Along the way, they discover and recruit a new member and exile one who betrayed them. With the premise established, characters introduced, and the stage set for more, there's hope that The Old Guard 2 will build on this success, dive deeper into the setting and telling more compelling stories.

While The Old Guard 2 was officially confirmed to be in the works in 2021, less than a year after the original became a summer hit, it took some time for production to begin and, nearly four years later, fans are still waiting for more details. Netflix has yet to provide a release date and observers are left to speculate about when it may finally drop and what the story will be. Just because the producers are being a bit secretive; however, doesn't mean that fans have nothing to go on.

Caitlin Clark – who helped draw crowds to arenas around the country and drive up viewership numbers in her final year of college and then in her rookie year in the WNBA – has been named Time’s Athlete of the Year.

Clark, 22, helped continue in 2024 the growing popularity of the WNBA and women’s college basketball, wowing fans with her long-range shots and crisp passing.

In her debut season with the Indiana Fever following a stellar career at Iowa, Clark took home the Rookie of the Year award and was named to the All-WNBA first team – the first rookie to do so since 2008 – during the 2024 season.

The Fever superstar also set rookie season records for both points and three-pointers made and became the first rookie to get a triple-double.

As well as scoring, Clark also set the all-time WNBA league record for assists in a single season and the most dimes in a single game.
