Some residents of Winners Estate in the Adamo, Ikorodu area of Lagos State have vacated their houses after two persons were kidnapped by gunmen in quick succession in the area. PUNCH Metro learnt that the first victim, a pastor, identified only as Patrick, was kidnapped after a house fellowship. The gunmen, who were reportedly five in number, took Patrick away in their canoe, while the second victim was kidnapped during an inspection of his construction site. Our correspondent gathered that Patrick was kidnapped on Saturday, May 21, at about 6.25pm. It was learnt that the gunmen stormed Patrick’s apartment, where a house fellowship had just ended and attempted to take him away in his car. However, when the vehicle did not start, they took him away in a canoe. The matter was reported at the Imota Police Division. It was gathered that four days later, the kidnappers released Patrick after collecting an undisclosed ransom, and picked their second victim on the same day. Our correspondent was told that the estate residents had written to the state House of Assembly, requesting that security be beefed up in the area. When PUNCH Metro visited the estate on Saturday, a resident was seen driving out with his belongings and family members. A woman, who gave her name only as Abimbola, said the resident was fleeing after a rumour of an imminent attack on the estate started to spread. She said, “Patrick’s kidnap was the first in the estate. Our estate is surrounded by water. The water flows to Mowo Kekere and Ijede, Ikorodu areas. Patrick had just finished coordinating a house fellowship at his apartment. “He wanted to start his car and go out when the gunmen struck. They had been lurking in a bush opposite his apartment. They took him away in their canoe. The matter caused a lot of panic. “It was four days later that the man was released after his family paid a ransom. The pastor has left the estate since the incident. “The gunmen have informants. They have sophisticated weapons. We are praying that development should come to the estate, but with these attacks, development will be far from us. “The gunmen still came last Tuesday. They were shooting sporadically. Everyone quickly shut their doors. That has been the situation around here.” A bricklayer, who declined to mention his name, said, “I left the estate on the day of the shooting. I just came back today (Saturday). A police station is supposed to be around here. The one the authorities started building in neighbouring Agunfoye area, has not been completed.” The Chairman of the estate Community Development Association, Tunji Balogun, said they had written to a member of the state House of Assembly representing the area, adding that the government should constitute a task force to monitor the waters around the estate and apprehend the kidnappers. He said, “It is true that one of our residents was kidnapped. He was blindfolded and taken to the waterside. “On May 24 when he was released, another man in Agunfoye was picked up. He has also been released. “We have written to the member of the state House of Assembly representing Ikorodu. “The gunshots on Tuesday were believed to be from the same kidnappers. There should be a task force to monitor this area and ensure that residents live in peace.” Our correspondent observed that some houses in the estate had been deserted and locked up by their owners. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, had yet to reply a text message sent to her phone on the matter. Source www.punchng.com/panic-gunmen-kidnap-pastor-after-service/

Bandits on Friday operated in Calabar freely for over three hours, killing an unidentified Inspector of Police that led a team to stop the robbery operations at a popular hotel located behind the headquarters of the Zone 6 Police Command. The robbers also shot another policeman at the same hotel before making away with his gun to another part of the Calabar metropolis where they attacked a security operative at a bank, also snatching his weapon. Southern City News learnt on Sunday that the armed bandits operated in the Cross River State capital from 9pm to 12 midnight and snatched seven cars before retreating to their hideout. An anonymous source said the armed robbers took time to dispossess the hotel customers of their belongings for over one hour before the arrival of the police team whose leader was killed. The source said that after leaving the hotel, the bandits went to the Nelson Mandela Street end of the Watt market in Calabar-South stabbed and dispossessed one security operative of his gun. He said, “The robbers operated at the hotel for over one hour before the intervention of policemen from the Federal Housing Police Station. The police team were ambushed by the robbers some few metres to the gate of the hotel. “They immediately opened fire on them and in the process killed the police inspector that led the team and shot another policeman who is in critical condition. “They also collected their guns and headed towards Nelson Mandela in Calabar South where they stabbed one policeman at an old generation bank close to Conoil Filing Station. They also collected the gun of the injured policeman. As they were moving, they were snatching vehicles. I learnt they collected up to seven cars in the course of the operations that lasted from 9pm to 12 midnight.” Robbers had also last Tuesday invaded one of the old generation banks along Mayne Avenue in Calabar South and killed one of the mobile policemen on duty and made away with his gun. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Eluu, confirmed the robbery operations on Friday. He said, “Yes, I am aware of the robbery operation at the hotel. The police are still investigating and will soon arrest the perpetrators. “We are calling on members of the public to avail us with useful information at all times to help curb this ugly development,” Eluu said. The Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said the proposed stakeholders meeting on public-private participatory management of some public secondary schools in the state will still go ahead despite the opposition it has attracted from labour unions. The chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Waheed Olojede, and six members of the congress are presently detained in Agodi prison after they were arrested and arraigned for disrupting the meeting to discuss the return of schools last week. The union members were charged with seven counts and remanded in prison last week. Ajimobi, who spoke while addressing members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Oyo State chapter, in his office, said those who disrupted the meeting had no stake in the education sector in the state. He added that the initiative would go ahead because of the advantages it would offer. The governor stated that the state would not tolerate public disturbance and brigandage by any group of people. Ajimobi said, “Before any partner can be allowed to get near our schools, they must have met some stringent conditions. Even in the nearest future, government would still monitor the schools to ensure adherence to standards. We will take the schools back if they fail us. “We are not selling any school. We are not privatising. Those people will only be our partners and I want to ask you to go out there and help educate our people that Oyo of today is democratic and our policies are hinged on consultation and participation. “Good governance is anchored on transparency, consultation and participation of subjects in the activities of the government. “You all know what went down at the last organised stakeholders’ meeting, which was disrupted. We invited all those that have stakes in education in the state to jaw-jaw on the partnering proposal in education and those without stake, as shown in their behaviours, went there to cause disturbances. “The era of brigandage and wanton destruction of public assets has gone. We would not allow any person or group to draw us back. If anybody has issues to present at the meeting, why didn’t they participate instead of disruption?” Source www.punchng.com/no-goingback-return-schools-says-ajimobi/

BY both comparative advantage and conventional party politics, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is supposed to be the most buoyant of all political parties in Nigeria. One, by virtue of its control of power at the centre, APC stands at a more vantage position than other parties in terms of access to resources. Again, it controls majority of elected representatives at the local, state and national levels, including having 23 state governors in its fold. Also, as people like to put their money where their mouth is, political patronage in form of corporate gifts and donations in exchange for contracts has always been a good source of funding for a ruling party. Arise O' Sleeping Youth of Nigeria!!! Awolowo was (37), Akintola (36), Ahmadu Bello (36), Effiong (36), Balewa (34) and Okotie-Eboh (27), Enahoro (27) led the struggle for independence after the death of Macaulay. Only Zik was 42 at the time. In 1966, the first coup was led by: Kaduna Nzeogwu (29) and countered by Murtala Mohammed (28), Theophilus Danjuma (28), Babangida (25), Nanven Garba (23), Sani Abacha (23), Shehu Musa Yaradua (23), and brought into power Gowon (32), Ojukwu (33), Obasanjo (29), Buhari (24). Most of the military administrators who governed the states under the successive military regimes, most of whom are governors now, were under 30 years. The brief democratic dispensation which interjected the military interregnums also saw the House of Representatives in particular populated by majority of members under 30 years as well as some senators.Under 30s were also not in short supply with appointments, we have examples of MT Mbu who became foreign affairs minister at 23 and Pat Utomi who became a presidential adviser at 27 and so on and so forth. NOW: Why is it that this age bracket is today still sleeping in 3 seater chairs in their parents’ homes? Why is it that this age bracket is today still collecting pocket money from their parents? Why is it that this age bracket is today still writing JAMB? Why is it that this age bracket is today still sagging their trousers? Why is it that this age bracket is today still searching for jobs? Why is it that this age bracket is today no longer qualified to even be leaders of youth wings of political parties? Why is it that this age bracket is today so docile? Why is it that this age bracket is today still incapable of feeding itself? Why is it that this age bracket is today barred by law from even aspiring to certain political offices? Why is it that this age bracket is today incapacitated, unwilling, unable and incapable of asking questions? By ORACLE1975
