Education / The Missing 1k Problem And My Solution by originalKsp(m): 7:15am On Jun 15, 2017
The following question and alot of it variants are popular. I decided to share my solution with you:

Question: I needed a laptop, i borrowed 50k from my mum and then 50k from my
dad.

The laptop was sold for me at the cost of 97k, i gave my mum 1k nd my dad 1k i hold back 1k, now am now owing my mum-49k and my dad -49k +the 1k which i kept back =99k. My question is where is the missing 1k?

My explanation:
Actually, no money is missing. Let me explain as much as I can;

This was how the money you borrowed was spent:
97k for laptop + 1k returned to dad + 1k returned to mum + 1k kept = 100k...can you see that no money was lost?

The "missing" 1k arose from the fact that you were making your calculation based on the balance INDEPENDENTLY remaining for you to pay to your parents which is not an actual break down of the 100k you spent. Let me explain my point with an analogy:

Suppose you borrowed 100eggs from your parents and you give 10 away, the REMAINING= 90

Suppose you give another 80 away, the REMAINING = 10

Suppose you give another 8 away, the REMAINING = 2

Suppose you give another 2 away, the REMAINING = 0

Now let us calculate the total eggs in our " "REMAINING" parts above:

90eggs + 10eggs + 2eggs + 0eggs = 102eggs...where did the extra 2eggs come from...from...Nowhere! There is no "extra 2". We calculated the remaining eggs after given out some eggs, this remaining eggs cannot(may not) add up to the total eggs we have becaue they are not the breakdown of the number of eggs we had initially.

Back to your question: the "missing 1k" arose from the fact that you added the remaing money to pay your parent instead of the actually breakdown of how the money was spent.

Awesome Math.

...Just like virus

A virus is dangerous because when it gets into the body of it's host, it produces new virus cells, this new cells also produce new cells and the process continues. This is what happens in compound interest: Principal produces interest, which also produces interest, which also produces interests....

Compound interest trajectory

Unlike simple interest which has a straight line trajectory, the trajectory of compound interest is a curved one! It's steepness changes each year - indicating changing principals and therefore changing interests each year.

Ok, this is getting too long. In the next post, I will discuss the general formular for compound interest and annuity.

Awesome Math!

lalasticlala, come and see snake interests ooo cheesy

Education / Re: Visualising Simple And Compound Interests: by originalKsp(m): 2:41pm On Jun 13, 2017
We started with N10, 000 in blue, each year the blue contributes N5000 (in red) to the total amount. An in each new year, our interest is based on our starting amount(the blue) and not our new amount the previous year( the blue + the red). Drawing a line along the path gives a straight line with an uniform steepness, indicating that interest is a fixed percentage of the starting amount. Each year we earn "P*R", no matter the interest we had earned before.

Compound Interest - Something Better or Worse!

You may wonder why in simple interest we earned the same amount each year. why couldn't we make money also from our interests? That's where compound interest comes in.

In simple interest, our interest after each year was 'inactive' - it was only the original amount (principal) that was working and earning more interests! Good news, in compound interests, our principal first makes interest, then the principal and the first interest both make another interest, then the principal, first and second interest also makes interest and so on....cool? Yea, cool for the lender. Bad for the borrower.In fact, Albert Einstein called it, "one of the most powerful forces of nature".

How it works

In compound interest, after each year, the interest is added to the original amount, principal, to get an higher principal for the next year. Let's take an example, suppose that someone borrows, N10, 000 at 50% interest compound interest for 3years:

In the first year:

Principal = 10,000
50% interest after year 1 = N5,000
Amount after year one: 10,000 + 5,000 = N15,000

In the Second year: The previous amount becomes the principal:

Principal = N15, 000
50% interest after year two: N7, 500
Amount after year two: 15,000 + 7500 = 22, 500

In the third year: The previous amount becomes the principal:

Principal = 22 500
50% interest after year three = 11, 250
Amount after year three: 22,500 + 11, 250 = N33, 750

Whoah! He will pay back N33, 750 after three years compound interest. If it were simple interest, the interest after 3 years would be...

I= 10,000 * 50% * 3 = 15,000.
Amount = 15,000 + 10,000.

..he would have payed back N25,000. The difference, N8, 750, is clear!

Since the principal grows each year in compound interest, compound interest can be represented as:

We may be able to reel out the formulars for simple and compound interests, but there is nothing as exciting as being able to visualize them! Learn why Albert Einstein called Compound interest, “one of the most powerful forces of nature”.

link: http://samimath.com/visualising-simple-compound-interests/

I remember my Primary School friend, Kayode who sometimes borrowed some money from me and return it few weeks later with a little 'bonus'. He could borrow N10 and return N15 a week later - extra N5 for the boys!

If I had spent the N10 myself, it wouldn't had earned me extra N5 a week later that's 50% extra. The extra N5 was my gain for not using the money myself. Back then, I didnot know that the extra N5 I gained had an official name - Interest.

Interest has been with us for ages, even before we had money. Our fore-forefathers would lend out a number of seeds to their mates and recieve the same number of seeds after the planting season with some additional produce of the seeds as interest. When money was invented, interest was also invented on money borrowed or saved.

So, interst can be said to be money paid on money borrowed from a lender or saved in a bank. It's the bonus you get for not using your money yourself.

Simple Interest - It's really simple

Simple interest is usually expressed as the percentage of the money borrowed and paid after a period of time. It is a fixed amount over time . If someone borrows N10, 000 and is to pay 50% interest at the end of the year, then:

Interst = 50% * N10, 000 = N5,000

That means he will pay back N15, 000 at the end of the year.

Suppose he wants to keep the borrowed money for 6 years.Then the interest he will pay after six years is:

N5,000 * 6 = N30, 000.

Including the money borrowed, he will pay the amount of N40, 000 after 6 years. Easy to compute? That's why it's simple interest.

The Simple Interst Formula

In the example above, we multiplied the percentage with the amount borrowed with the number of years to get the interest for six years. That is:

Simple Interst, I = pecentage * amount borrowed * number of years.

The amount borrowed is usually called the Principal(P), the number of years is called the Time(T) and the percentage to pay is called the Rate(R). So, we can write:

I = P*R*T.

Since Simple interst is constant over a period of time, it can be represented as:

Art, Graphics & Video / Surprising Benefits Of White Board Animations! by originalKsp(m): 8:52am On Jun 13, 2017
Why choose whiteboard animation over static ads or traditional film media? Let us count the ways…

1. Whiteboard animations are engaging.

Text or dry video interviews alone run the risk of becoming perilously… boring. That’s where whiteboard animation video can come in to spice up your content with shiny objects, surprises and stories that tug at your heartstrings.

Whether you’re creating marketing videos for pre-roll ads, or longer in–house learning materials, whiteboard animations are designed to capture, and keep, your audience’s attention from the first five seconds on.

(Or as we like to call it, “Tricking people into paying attention long enough to care”.) wink

2. They make you feel good (and take action). That’s just science…

Ever heard of mirror neurons?

These are the neurons that fire when you watch someone else do something, but have the feeling that you’re doing it yourself. Italian scholars have theorized that when you watch a hand drawing that your brain reacts as if you, yourself, are drawing the image.

This may explain an extra dose of dopamine upon the completion of each image- our brains may be reacting as if we, ourselves, have completed an illustration. This adds to the audience’s desire to continue watching, or the feeling of being glued to the screen.

And the jolt of dopamine gives viewers increased drive to make a plan based on what they’re learning AND follow through with the call to action at the end of the video. cool

[More about neuroscience and whiteboard animations here.]

3. They’re more fun, warm, and charming.

Making digital marketing feel handmade (by your smart friend with a marker) is a huge part of our mission here at Next Day Animations.

It’s what makes our whiteboard animation videos feel so human. And what strengthens the audience’s bond with you and your message. cool

4. They’re different. They’re fresh.

Whiteboard animations just pop. That’s why every week we hear the phrase “I love these videos”.

Tell your friends about your whiteboard animation, and see them become interested. cheesy

5. With animation, the sky’s NOT the limit.

Education / The Awesomeness Of The Pythagorean Theorem by originalKsp(m): 1:31pm On Jun 01, 2017
Perhaps, you have memorized the 2,500-year old Pythagorean theorem as a series of letters and numbers: a²+ b² = c². If so, then you also know that it concerns triangles that are right-angled. But I want to inform you today that, it does not concern triangles alone, it concerns all plane shapes. Hold on, I will explain this shortly.

Quick Review on Areas

The following is an excerpt from previous lesson about similar shapes and their areas.

When we were taught areas in school, there is an insight that is usually overlooked. The fact is that the area of any shape can be calculated from any line segment squared. In fact, it can be represented as:

Area = area factor × [line segment]²

Area = f × [line segment]²

Consider a square, if we are to take the length of a side s as the line segment, then the area of the square is s2.

Area = area factor × [line segment]²

Area = s² = 1 × s²

If we are to use the diagonal d of a square as the line segment, the formula for the area changes to:

Comparing the two formulars above butresses the point that area of a shape can be calculate from a "line segment" squared. The only difference in the two formulars is the "multiplier", that is called the "area factor",f. Using the length of the side of a square the area factor is 1. While using the diagonal of the square, the area factor is ½. This means the area of the shape can be represented as
:

Area = area factor × [line segment]²

Area = f × [line segment]²

The following table shows different shapes, their are formular and area factor.

Intuitive look at at the Pythagorean theorem

Any right triangle can be divided into two other similar right triangles:

Now, it's obvious that the area of the two smaller triangles add up to the big one:

Now, from a previous lesson about similar shapes and their areas, we learnt that we can represent the area of a right angle triangle as:

Area = area factor × [hypotenuse]²

Area = f × [hypotenuse]²

From that post, we also learnt that similar shapes have the same area factor.

Now, from the diagram of the similar triangles above, it follows that.

Area(Big) = Area(Medium) + Area(Small)

F • c² = F • b² + F • a²

Divide all through by F:

c² = b² + a²

Yuppy! That's our famous Pythagorean theorem. Now you know intuitively that it's true because:

• A right triangle can be split into two similar right triangles</li>
• The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle determine its area</li>
• Since the areas must add up, the squared hypotenuses (which determine
area) must add up as well.

One can visualize the Pythogerean theorem by drawing squares on the sides of the a right triangle:

The catch: You can use any shape!

Do you still remember I stated that the Pythagorean theorem can be used for any plane shape? Now, let me prove my point!

Assume that the sides of a right angle triangle represents the radius of a circle:

Now let me add the areas of the circles together:

π • 5² = π • 4² + π • 3²

What do we get when we divide through by π? Yea, you are right;

Circle of radius 5 = circle of radius 4 + circle of radius 3.

That means that the amount of paint that will be used to paint a circular wall of radius 5 will paint two circular walls of radius 4 and radius 3! Do you now agree that the Pythagorean theorem is awesome?

The fact is that, we can multipy the numbers in our Pythagorean theorem with any area factor and the theorem will still hold!

More Examples!
Surface Areas:

The surface area of a sphere is 4πr². For similar spheres the area factor is constant. It follows that in terms of surface area:

4π • 50² = 4π • 40² + 4π • 30²

<b>Area of radius 50 = Area of radius 40 + Area of radius 30</b>

Now suppose plastic balls are to be covered with leather, this means that the amount of leather that will be used to cover a ball of radius 50cm will cover two balls of radius 40cm and radius 30cm!

Physics
In Physics the energy of a moving body is given as ½mv², it follows that:

<b>Energy at 500m/s = Energy at 400m/s + Energy at 300m/s</b>

It means that, With the energy used to accelerate one bullet to 500 m/s, we could accelerate two others to 400 and 300 m/s.

Wonderful Insight

We were taught in school that the Pythagorean theorem applied to triangles, but now we know that's not true. We now know that it can apply to any similar plane shapes. In fact, it can apply any relationship between quantities that involves a parameter squared as in the example of the energy of a moving body above.

Now, go forth and enjoy your new insight!

Happy Math.

Then greediness, economic sabotage and uneven wealth distribution is not the fault of capitalism but that of the people, right?

Like every other system, democracy is not a perfect system. However, Nigeria is not practising true democracy, the people has largely been undermined while few elites decide the course of the country. It is wrong to blame the victims, people, that over the years have been incapacitated by high unemployment rate, high poverty rate, poor health facility, poor educational system and lack of basic amenities.

The people are the victims of the system modified by the elites. You can call it demo crazy.

Has Democracy worked in Nigeria? YES... To some extent!!!

Democracy does not build roads nor put food on our table, it is simply a system that hand power over to the people to dictate their leadership. The kind of leaders chosen by the people is not the fault nor to the credit of democracy but that of the people.

When you keep electing bad leaders, when you keep taking N1000 from politicians to vote, when your vote is strictly for the man that is from your tribe or religion, when you look the other way while votes are inflated simply because it was perpetrated by the person you wish to win etc, you can't turn around to blame democracy. You have to blame YOURSELF not democracy as a system.

Boss, I disagree. As Albert Einstein stated "A perfection of means, and confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem. " Democracy is the means, the aim is good life for the people.

In Nigeria, we have not even perfected the means "democracy" and we have lost grip of the "aim" - which is good life for the people a long time.

Democracy is not just electing pple to places of power, it's making sure they deliver good deeds to people. We are quite good at the former but failed woefully at the later.

Today in my dear country Nigeria, we celebrate Democracy day. In my opinion, this day should be a day we ask questions about the journey of our democracy. Who has it favoured and who is it favouring.?

It's days like this that I wish Baba Fela Anikulapo was still alive, in one of his songs, he commented on Nigeria's democracy, he said:

"Democracy, crazy demo,
demonatration of craze,crazy demonstration,if [it is not] crazy,
why is it that as time goes in Africa, things are just getting bad,
getting bad more and more.
Poor man cries, rich man continues to mess [up things]"

Baba Fela said these words when he realised like other well-meaning Nigerians in the 90's that democracy in Nigeria and Africa at large was no more "government of the people for the people and by the people", it had became an avenue for the "elected" to amass wealth at the expense of those who elected them.

The question we should ask ourselves is, how has things change since the 90's?. Have we finally gotten democracy to work for us in Nigeria? If Fela Anikulapo was still alive, will he take back his critism on Nigeria's democracy?

The fact is : Things has gone worse. Our democracy has not favoured the majority of the people.

We have succeded in producing Political elite that can provide 33 private jets to attend the Wedding of a former head of state's daughter's wedding.

We have produced Political elite that only need us during the election periods.

We have produced Political elite who are importing arms and ammunitions massively to "empower" the youth of this country.

We have produced Political elite, who will run abroad for medical checkups, send their children to the best schools outside of the country because they themselves cannot trust the system we have in Nigeria.

We have produced "citizens" who are living below $1/day, and out of frustration has lost hope in Nigeria and now thinks of leaving Nigeria for other countries as a turning point in their lives.

We have produced a set of people who thinks that when corruption favors them, it's not bad - then they call it "connection" "unmeritted favour" etc.

Our democracy has not been working. And if things continues like this, I'm afraid if Nigeria will not become history. Becuase people are getting more tired of this 'democracy' day by day.

My fellow Nigerians, today is the day we should ask our government to account for 'democracy' in Nigeria.

Let's remember the wise words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who said "Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country."

God bless Nigeria.
Happy Democracy Day.
