Youths in Benin City on Wednesday blocked both lanes of the Benin–Lagos Expressway at the Ugbowo main gate, bringing traffic to a standstill.

At the time of filing this report, a large crowd of protesters had gathered at the scene, demonstrating peacefully while chanting anti-corruption songs. Some of the protesters who spoke with news correspondents expressed deep frustration over the state of insecurity in the country.

They specifically referenced the recent killing of several Christians in Jos, Plateau State, which reportedly occurred three days earlier, describing the incident as one of many that have heightened public fear and anger.

The blockade caused significant disruption, with long lines of stranded vehicles stretching along the expressway. Many commuters who could not endure the delay were seen abandoning their vehicles and continuing their journeys on foot.

It is now commonplace for citizens to be arrested and detained over libel or defamation, issues that in any functioning democracy are civil, not criminal matters.

‎Mr President, a poor Nigerian today is but a step away from prison, his only offence being a divergent opinion or criticism of a powerful individual. This culture of fear, this creeping autocracy, is antithetical to everything you once stood for.

‎You have always said that all politics is local. Yet the local governments across the federation have been rendered impotent, subjugated by governors who see them as mere administrative appendages. The system has been so centralised and suffocated that democracy at the grassroots is virtually extinct.
