Dollar is the new bride in Nigeria, that everyone wants to betroth, but whose beauty and power make it difficult to woo. It is obvious that there is a shortage of dollar and the government is really overwhelmed to control the circulation of the limited currency in the economy. The force of demand and supply has made the price of dollar against naira so powerful that it keeps increasing on a daily basis. There are reasons we are in this unpalatable situation. I will not bore you with too much technicalities, I will use the simple term of Comparative Advantage to drive my opinion. Comparative Advantage It is a simple theory that explains why someone who is a plumber and a babysitter would choose plumbing because of the huge profit plumbing would bring. In the case of Nigeria, we were into agriculture- the following states were known for their dominance. Benue' yam was fit for export , Akwa Ibom was a major palm oil supplier to Malaysia , Akure was a leader in cocoa plantation and our cassava was exported for drug production. All the agricultural dominance died when Nigeria shifted focus to crude oil. The sales of crude oil was our exchange for value and we raked in DOLLAR. But, what is the situation NOW Unfortunately, countries of the world are shifting focus from oil exploration because of the impact on the environment and climate change. Clean energy, electric motors are some of the core innovations currently deployed in many nations. This , of course, contributed to the drop in demand for crude oil coupled with the rage of COVID -19 which has precipitated all organisations to embrace corporate governance and sustainability. This makes it difficult for Nigeria to sell crude oil at the global market and those who are buying pay peanuts to acquire the oil from Nigeria. It simply means no product (Crude Oil) sales , No DOLLAR. How can Nigeria attract dollars to ensure surplus? 1. Foreign Direct Investment This is the decision by foreign investors to acquire a substantial stake or buy a Nigeria business. If Nigeria provides an enabling environment for foreign investors , they will definitely pump dollars into the economy. However, policies, insecurities and lack of basic amenities such as electricity have made us lose a chunk of foreign companies. According to NACCIMA, more than 800 foreign companies have left the country. OLX, Opay-Bike, Dunlop , Max etc are among the companies that were lost to the menace. 2. Start Up. Currently, companies like flutterwave, paystack, Bamboo and Chaka have capital valuation that surpass local banks in Nigeria. Despite their distruptive innovation, they are faced with regulatory bottle necks that may stifle their existence in no time if care is not taking. 3. Agriculture This is our bedrock as a nation. Our coat of arms says it all. Nigeria is blessed with so many resources that can make us compete at the global. market. To reinforce our strength, the Nigeria government established Nirsal Microfinance Bank earmarking $500 million to resuscitate the ailing agric sector. The fund was set aside to support young /old farmers to produce food for local consumption and exportation. At least with the EXPORTATION of agric produce, we would be able to repatriate dollar into Nigeria. Unfortunately, this dream have been cut short by lethal bomb of alleged corruption that hit the NIRSAL bank. Most farmers could not access the loan which forfeits the objective of NIRSAL. So, how do we get dollars with all these hiccups? We have to start producing to earn in USD and not borrowing more money and importing. The Challenge The Central Bank of Nigeria would not be able to meet the increasing demand for foreign currencies by people who want Personal/Business Traveling Allowance or to open form A to harness fund to pay for tuition abroad or medicals; those who want to import with Form M would definitely suffer more in the coming days. To make the matter worse , the Bureau D' Change operators who were providing cushion effect for dollar scarcity have been suspended by CBN. Meanwhile, we have to be sincere with ourselves, BDC operators will never accept defeat, they would find a way to stay in business. This option could mean buying currency from neighbouring countries- in actual sense, they will factor all their expenses - purchase price , security clearance and cost of shipping. Now you understand why the price market dealers will keep determining the price of dollars? Will the issue with price and scarcity of dollar abate in the coming days? My answer is NO. No matter the options adopted by the government to regulate the system, there will always be loop hole and the price of dollar will not seems to come down. This is in line with the law of demand and supply . As a matter of fact, we have to bear in mind that dollar may hit $1 to N1,000 The only solution is that we start producing for other countries to consume, enough of being a consuming nation. In the meantime , it is imperative that you start earning or convert your money to dollars to keep the value in check. |

December is a festive period and most important part of the year when families and friends come together to celebrate especially those who have not seen one another over the years .It is a good month for bonding. But I have a big challenge with this month. Most people choose to come up with resolutions that are not feasible during this time. At the end of the following year, ask them what they'd achieved,it will be story for the gods. People who understand the act of genuine resolution achieved that when the mind is stretched not at the moment of merriment; they take decision before December and not in December. Most of the decisions we make when we are happy are most likely unrealistic. However, it is never too late. You can still make hay while the sun set.Just be truthful to yourself. People take December as a moment that will never come again in their life time by devouring anything devourable. Some persons will empty their life savings from January to November, add December salary and bonuses to celebrate while some will go to an extent of borrowing to make up. They will invite both friends and enemies to the village square and order Nigeria Breweries to come with their mobile beer truck for it is time to celebrate!!!! Then,January will come like a little bride and their moment of groaning will commence. Their children will be sent out of school, landlord will come knocking at their door and some will begin to raise IOU to survive the tide. These are people that will take you as their "personal enemy" if you dare tell them you don't have money when they call for help. You will hear story like "I was always there for him, it is my turn but he turned me down". Some will put the blame on their village people and begin to visit mountains claiming there is a curse weighing them down. If you have to spend all your money this December to celebrate at the village square, make sure you have a shock absorber. Make provision for essential bills like student fees, rent, fare etc. Companies ,businesses and individuals experience low sales and cashflow in January, sometimes, it extends to February or March. It is helpful to give people money but work within budget. If it is 2000 naira you can afford instead of the 5,000 naira requested, do not stress yourself beyond limit.Do not act foolishly to please anyone. At the same time, not all calls are to be answered. Do not impress anyone and make sure you use your cerebellum/medulla Oblongata efficiently to control unnecessary pleasure during this festive period. If you go sleep with an itching anus you are sure to wake up with smelly fingers. |

I had a discussion with a couple on a Sunday and all was about high expectations by lovers. Here is the excerpt; Many lovers are growing pseudo romantic beliefs through the films they watch and the novels they read; to some, they expect their spouses to act like the Karishika they saw on a pornsite. They fail to realise that most of these people consume hard drugs and alcohol to stay long in the act; and also do it for money - a great source of motivation. I presume the ideas of love at first sight, “love will overcome all obstacles,” and “happily ever after“ are great but they are only applicable to 1 in 100 relationships.Ask around from couples that have scaled through the hurdles and still learning, they have many great lessons to share with you. Religion is also playing a major role in this issue. The teachings and beliefs that you should never fight with your partner and that you will always have amazing moments together sounds really cool. These beliefs culminates into high romanticism which leads to high expectations for your relationships: The problem is that with such lofty ideal standards for your relationship, you’ve set yourself up to fail because these unrealistic expectations are, well, unrealistic. There are ups and downs. There are moments you will look at your partner and want out. The fantasy of a "perfect relationship" in reality are not absolutely applicable. The principles from teachings would guide you but you have to identify, define and develop tactics that would work out perfectly for your relationship, then you are ready for the race. Self defined values and conviction ,mutual agreement, tolerance and God leading also have good role in achieving a great feat after all. |

I joined a company once, and my new manager told me negative things about a junior colleague-Datum. He was of the opinion that Datum was overly critical and hard to work with, dishonest and not loyal; 'tread softly with him', he muttered. The manager openly criticised Datum and gave instructions that he should not assemble or repair any company's equipment . In a short while,I realised that Datum was one of the best people the company had.Datum, according to everyone, was brilliant,an electrical/electronics engineer with precision and always responsive. Good people are often seen as threats by weak leaders. We found out that Datum was getting a backlash because of his skills, encomium from the people including the top management staff and also for an award handed to him for his dedication Despite all the lashes, Datum remained humble and accorded more respect to 'the boss of life'. I learnt all along that you should never judge anyone by the opinion of others and always give people benefit of the doubt.

People are afraid to share vision and ideas with close pals. Most people, especially the Afonjas with their superstition, believe the idea would not see the light of the day. Also, many ideas shared in the past were toppled and converted to personal intellectual property by the internal allies. However, no idea would become materialistic without the support of close associates. Most companies that have ever attained the top in the world Glo World , ConoilPLC , UBA Group GTBank , The Tony Elumelu Foundation Samsung Mobile, Apple Total Facebook enjoyed huge support of friends and family. Dear friend if someone chooses you as a business associate never dash the trust. Support the vision in any way you could and definitely the law of Karma will reward you handsomely!!! If you don't buy the idea , just walk away;don't steal or convert their ideas to yours. |

You can read about Corruption in Small Places (1) here https://www.nairaland.com/4002712/corruption-small-places As a matter of strategy, I went ahead to find out the reason why the freelancer lost the second job, so that we could learn from it. Our team approached the church to provide a roofing service. After much deliberations, we sent our enumerator to do the measurement and sent the quotation to the pastor thereafter. The pastor requested a discount of over 15% and final payment plan of 2 weeks after the first installment. The first installment was 70%. After presenting it to the management for approval, it was ratified by the Chairman even though it eroded the company’s profit. Thereafter, the pastor brought another counter -offer. The church had only 65% of the total cost (they were supposed to pay 100% as a policy) and would pay the final installment after 4 weeks. I thought it would never scale through but the chairman approved without hesitation. Chairman’s approval came as his widow’s mite to the church. All these changes were documented. We made series of cold calling to follow up with the pastor and he promised that the payment would be made into our bank account that Thursday of the same . We didn’t see the money and we decided to put a call to him and he said the church should finalise the payment by the following day- Friday. He also said we should come by 10:00am for project discussiont. On that Friday as at 8:00 am, another roofer was already putting up the Church ‘s roof cladding. I got to the site and asked the agent if we were coming to the building he showed me, he said yes. I was surprised that these crooks could still take their irrational attitude to the “house of God”. As at the time of the visit, the church was partly covered. The roofer left it half way for a month now. He also used material that is fading out with a very low gauge. Meanwhile, my anger was mixed with surprises that the pastor acted that way and put the church in a state of chaos. You should rather turn me down than raise my hope My findings revealed that the church considered his quotation to be the “cheapest” so they went for it. The roofer used “hold up tactic “– the roofer will take the owner to the Aluminium factory and the home owner will pay directly, the exact money on the cutting list produced by the roofer, to the cashier. That you pay to the factory would enhance your confidence but the roofer will go behind you to claim excess meter on the list. What this means is that, the roofing sheets would finish half way. You as the home owner would consider it as human error in measurement and pay for more sheets; it would be shameful to leave your roof in such state of “pissmapissma”

I got a job recently in a roofing company as a project manager. Based on my experience with e- business and non-governmental organisations, I proposed freelancing for young people to earn extra -income and increase the company’s sales. They simply secure a project riding on all our resources; we execute and they get their commissions. It is a symbiotic relationship. Over 430 young people expressed interest for the training but only 5 people later registered. Projects were rolling in and commissions were paid. After few weeks, I discovered one of the freelancers lost two projects within a week. I went to the field to find out what the issue was, I was amazed when I found out. We bidded for the first project with 600- meter as the actual total running meter for Mr Wale’s house. Another roofer, who was pre-informed about our quotation by an insider, submitted a quotation with 50-meter short of the ACTUAL meter for the roof. How will this guy complement the shortfall I asked? My team members giggled and echoed “that one na small thing now”. It is Mr. Wale (the homeowner) that will bear the brunt eventually. How I asked again? “Oga, 2 things go happen for the deal”. 1.The roofer will use Aluminium sheet that is cheaper with a lesser gauge (thickness and property component). He will quote for 0.55mm thickness and use 0.45mm and with property component of 0.35m. 2. He will do cut and turn—This is very technical and with this alone, he may cover the shortfall What are the implications, I asked softly? The roof will fade out on time, experience leakage due to flexibility of the materials and may pull off when there is heavy storm. And of course, the roofer will make more money now and charge for future repair. I wanted to be sure the information was accurate, I checked the building after few days, lo and behold, Mr. Wale is really in trouble!

Be careful what you say in front your children. Sometimes the trouble it takes to explain things is just not worth the trouble. |
Driving with my 10-year-old daughter in the car last Sunday afternoon, I was flagged down by an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps. She asked for my driving licence and I gave it to her. She turned it over this way and that and finally asked: Officer: 'Madam, how many passports did you use in your application?' Me: *just staring at her blankly, then, 'I don't understand the question.' Officer: 'I mean how many photos did you use?' Me: 'Is it possible to use different pictures in the application?' Officer: 'Did you use different pictures in your application?' Me: 'I can’t know which is fake and which is real, all I know is that this one was issued to me by your people.' Officer: 'I am asking because there are many fake licenses now and it is our people that give them out.' Officer: 'Where did you do it?' Me: 'In the FRSC office.' Officer: 'In Mabushi?' Me: 'No, at the Federal Secretariat.' Officer: 'Ok...'she looked at my daughter sitting in the passenger seat, as if just seeing her for the first time and asked, ‘Madam, is your daughter up to 13years?' Me (with a straight face and without missing a beat): 'Almost! She is twelve.' Officer: 'Next time let her sit at the back. She can only sit here when she is thirteen.' Me: 'OK.' The officer handed me back my license and waved me off. As I started to drive, I could feel the tension in the car all around my daughter. I knew I was in for some hard question and answer session and my brain was already busy conjuring up possible answers. My daughter: 'Mama, I am 10 years old.' Me: 'I know.' My daughter: 'But you told that 'Road Safety' that I am 12 years old.' Me: 'I know.' My daughter: 'But Mama that's not true.' Me: 'I know' My daughter: 'Mama but you said people should ALWAYS tell the truth no matter what!' Me: 'Yes, I did.' My daughter: 'So Mama why did you tell her something that is not true?' (She is old enough to choose her words well and was deliberately avoiding the use of the word 'lie'). Me: 'Because you are taller than many 12 year olds and the use of seat belts is actually dependent on body size and not age. Many people already don't believe you are not 12 years old.' My daughter (visibly relaxing): 'That is true. But you should have told her my real age.' Me: (wearing my most serious face mask): 'You are right. I should not have lied to that woman. Afterall, what can she do? Maybe just arrest me and keep me for a day. Let me go and tell her your real age.' I made a great show of trying to swerve the steering wheel to turn around. My daughter: (Looking very alarmed): 'Mama, but she will arrest you! Please let's just go.' Me: 'But, I feel so bad for lying. I need to go and tell her the truth. Lying must never be an option.’ My daughter: 'Mama, please let's go. You are right that wearing seat belts is about body size and I look too big for my age.' Me: 'But you agree that it is wrong to lie and I was very wrong in this case.' My daughter: 'It is Mama, but in this case, you are right. Imagine Aunty X's son sitting in this chair. His head won’t even show and he is older than me. So Mama sitting here should not be about age because some children are very small for their age and some are big for their age.’ And that was how a little white lie sparked a big debate on why age should not be a determinant in choosing who should sit in the passenger seat of a car and how I was saved the indignity of continuing to explain why I said what I said. ©Zainab Magaji Source: http://www.naomilucasblog.com/2015/07/being-family-life-after-little-white.html#more |
